Zara's initial reaction is panicked calling for help from the others. When that doesn't work, she tries to think-tell the woman's spirit that Captain Palliser is dead.

For no obvious reason, Zara stumbles blindly towards one of the garden's half-ruined adobe walls, collapsing against it and breaking into sobs. After some time, she is able to speak again.

-- Dead! My own true heart! Mother of Angels, can this be true? --

Knowing from experience (an exhilarating fortnight in Marbella to be precise) how excitable Latin ladies can be, Tony elects to stay out of the conversation and leave the others to comfort the distraught spirit.

Instead, intrigued by the Japanese, who he has paid little heed to until now, he tries to remember if he's ever come across Takara Electronics in his adventures before.

Liz gives Zara a comforting hug. "I'm afraid it's true," she says. "His spirit contacted us. He was murdered, and I believe he did not abandon you by choice. In fact, he desires to live again, and we may be able to help him if we can find his remains. We know they are here somewhere. When and where did you see him last? It might help us find him."

Zara, trembling with emotion, makes the sign of the Cross upon herself.

-- My Lady, something tells me that you speak truly. Guillermo was a very brave man, quick to seek satisfaction from one who would dishonor him. Perhaps he was slain in a duel? --

She pauses to think a moment.

-- It was in the church, -- she continues, pointing to the nearby ruins of the former chapel -- where we last made our vows to each other. -- She blushes slightly. -- I know he was not of the True Faith, and that it was wicked to go away with him, but he swore to me that we would be wed in the Church. Is it possible that our plan was discovered? --

Tony coughs politely, somewhat abashed considering his recent performance.

"Please excuse me; it pains me to ask; but was there a rival for the captain's affection, or someone who would object strongly to your union?"

Spoiler:
Zara tries to scream "No" to Liz, though of course no sound comes out. (She's afraid that if Consuela learns that William might live again, she'll never let Zara's body go - and William did say she would pay a high price for his help in the fire. And now she's afraid that she's just given Consuela that very idea).

"That may be possible," says Liz. "We should look inside the church next."

With a look of disdain, Zara replies:

-- There were many shameless woman who cast amorous glances in the direction of so bold and handsome a soldier, but they were as nothing to him. As for the objections of my family, that would have vanished once we were wed; I am sure of it! Ah, but now it is too late! --

A few brief sobs follow this statement.

Spoiler:
You will find yourself back in control of your body, if a little dazed, once inside the church.

There is little left of the little church where Father Junipero Serra once held services. Once the investigators enter the ruins, they notice a change in Zara, who blinks her eyes rapidly and seems a little confused.

"Is she gone?" Zara asks. "I c-couldn't do anything!" She tries to take the ring off.

"Oh my goodness!" Tony rushes to Zara. "You're back! I was beginning to worry. I'm very sorry for suggesting you wear that ring."

He will help her remove the ring if she has difficulty.

"I wasn't worried," says Liz. "If she hadn't left on her own, I could have driven her out with a circle of protection around you, but she's not an evil spirit. It still can't have been a pleasant experience, and I'm glad you're yourself again, Zara. I'm hoping that, if we can restore William Palliser to life, we can restore her to life as well. Now that we have her name, we should be able to find her grave. If the captain has his love back as well as his life, I think he can be convinced not to seek revenge on the descendants of whoever killed him. Shall we search the church for clues now?"

A careful search of the area does not reveal anything of interest. The ring proves easy to remove.

By this time, the setting sun casts long shadows of the towering ruins of the mission across the surrounding area. The few tourists take their last photographs and head for their cars. Soon it is too dark to explore any other areas of the mission. Depending on what their plans might be the investigators may wish to make the hour or so drive back to Venice, or to seek lodgings nearby.

"A tourist spot like this, there's bound to be a few hotels hereabouts - I'm sure we can find one that'll accomodate us."

Tony winks at Liz.

"Let's hope it's a full moon tonight..."

Spoiler:
Full Moon was on the night of November 17, 1967, which is about now, I suppose . . .

It is a easy task to find lodgings at one of the many hotels and motels located near the Mission. After a restful night, the investigators rise the next morning and enjoy a hearty breakfast. (Huevos Rancheros are the specialty of the house, for those with adventurous tastes.)

The local newspaper, in addition to the usual stories about Vietnam and the Apollo project, carries a small "human interest" article, mixed in with the comics, horoscopes, and crossword puzzle, about locals claiming to see a glowing light over the area during the night. Some astronomers suggest it was the full moon or Venus.

"Probably responding to the signal given off by that electronic device," says Liz. "I wonder if it's an alien spacecraft. I've always wanted to make contact with aliens."

"Aliens? Well that'd be a turn up for the books... Do the electronic components on that gizmo look like they come from Earth?"
