Ch.8 Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down

The voice on the phone said, "I understand that you are a friend of my son, James. He has gone missing. I require your assistance in bringing him home again...”

A university student has gone missing. Can his friends find out what has happened to James Frazer in 1920s Massachusetts?

Spoiler:
I'll say that I'm holding a light. Even if it makes using the rifle difficult, I still have a revolver as backup.

Lawrence heads into the other room where Howard is, shining his torch on the sheet.

Spoiler:
I think we all have flashlights, but since I need both hands to hold my shotgun, I can't be using mine.

Spoiler:
Thomas is also using a flashlight.

"Well? What's behind the sheet?" Thomas shouts to the others.

Howard carefully peered behind the curtain, where he saw a familiar-looking table. Leather straps hung down from the corners, with fresh bloodstains indicating that it had been used recently. The glass jars that had contained viscous green liquid and the strange spines previously seen at Squatter’s Lake had been smashed, and glass, spines and the green liquid adorned the floor near the table.

There was a sudden creak. It wasn’t clear if it came from the wooden crates lined up against the back wall or from somewhere else in the house...

Howard draws the curtain back carefully so that the others can see the scene, suppressing a shudder when he sees the spines.

Hearing the creak, he says “We’d better check these crates before we do anything else”.

"Keep the noise down," whispers William. "We don't want anyone to hear us." He trains his shotgun on the crates.

With a deep breath, Howard leans his shotgun against a crate as he attempts to open it.

The wooden lid wasn’t fastened down and moved easily. Howard noted with a sickening feeling in his stomach that there were blood splatters on the rough wooden interior.

The lids on the other three crates moved just as easily and were also empty. Wherever the creaking noise had come from, it wasn’t from the crates.

"Come on then, let's hurry and find out what's going on." Thomas leaves the room and walks over to the other door.

Thomas opened door and shone his flashlight up the stairs. They were of rough, wooden construction - very much for the servants of the house, not visitors - although years of use had rubbed away at any rough edges. In the middle of the tread was a trail of blood, still fresh and not congealed, that suggested something may have been dragged down the stairs.

The door at the top of the stair stood ajar. From above came another creak.

Howard, eager for revenge, pushes past Thomas and slowly up the stairs. Shotgun ready, he pushes the door open as quietly as possible.

The door at the top of the stairs swung open into a kitchen. The windows were shuttered but a few cracks of light pierced the interior, lighting dust motes as the hung in the air.

The kitchen was spartan. To the left along the wall was another door, then the back door. Straight ahead was a shuttered window above a Belfast sink. To the right, there was an opening to another darkened room, in which the outline of a dining table could be seen.

Thomas follows Howard up the stairs. After looking around, he taps him on the shoulder, and points to the darkened room. "Let's check over here, Howard." he says in a low voice.

William follows as well. "Keep in mind there may be innocent people staying here," he whispers.

The dining room, like the kitchen, was shuttered and dark. Two dining chairs lay on the floor as if pushed roughly out of the way by people in a hurry. Other than that, the room stood as if ready for a meal.

Opposite the way they came in, there was an opening into another dark room to the left and what looked to be on opening to a hallway on the right.

Lawrence had trailed just behind the others, acting as a rearguard in the case of an ambush.
"Someone's been here recently. Whether it's a guest or not is beyond me, but somebody has been here. Looks like they left in a rush, too.", he muttered, shining his torch on the table.

"They must have heard us," whispers William. "We have to figure out which way they went and find them before they warn someone." He takes a good look around.
