Ch.8 Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down

The voice on the phone said, "I understand that you are a friend of my son, James. He has gone missing. I require your assistance in bringing him home again...”

A university student has gone missing. Can his friends find out what has happened to James Frazer in 1920s Massachusetts?

Track was a legitimate option as there was more than one thing you could have found.

For information, this is the view over the bayou to the rear of the property.

Thomas quickly moves down the steps and over to Oscar, checking his injuries and for any signs of life.

Oscar was out cold. Thomas surmised that it was a blow to the back of his head that had done the damage. It had bled heavily, as scalp wounds often would, but the blood was now starting to congeal. Thomas had seen similar injuries before when patrolling the streets of Arkham and he didn’t think that there would be any lasting damage. Oscar would have a sore head and some bruising but probably nothing more. Probably.

As Thomas turned to look back to report on Oscar’s condition, he noticed that the door at the bottom of the stairs had been tampered with. It looked as if it had been forced open but someone had tried to disguise the damaged woodwork, so that a casual observer would think the door was still secure.

Lawrence heads down the stairs, as Thomas did.

"You think I should take him back to the car?" he said in a whisper, gesturing towards Oscar.

"Maybe we should try to revive him" says Howard. "He might be able to tell us what happened".

”It looks like the door here has been forced open!” Thomas says to the others, before taking a look inside.

Oscar’s eyes flickered open and he stared at William uncomprehendingly. He looked around at the others and raised his hand to the back of his head. He winced as he touched the area where he had been hit and looked at the blood on his fingers with bewilderment.

”What happened?” he asked. ”Did ah fall and bang ma head?”

Behind where Oscar lay, Thomas had pushed open the door. Beyond was a cellar under the house. It was difficult to see how far it went as it was dark, and the space looked to be at least partially partitioned off.

"I don't know what happened, Oscar," says William. "When you didn't come back after a while, we came looking for you and found you here. I was hoping you could tell us what happened."

Oscar tried to sit up but the colour drained from his face almost immediately and he was forced to lie back again. ”Ah heard a noise back here, so’s ah came to take a look,” he said. ”The door was open so ah came down the steps... and the next thing ah know, ah’m talking to you... ...”

He touched the back of his head again, carefully examining the bump that was growing there. ”Ah guess someone hit me on the head but ah didn’t see nobody.”

"You'd better go back to the car and wait for us there. If we're not back in..." Howard checks his watch... "thirty minutes, go to get help. Do you have a watch?"

Unsteady on his feet, Oscar had to be helped back to his car. He insisted that Howard fetched the tyre iron from the trunk and checked that all the doors were locked.

As Howard turned to head back to the house, Oscar knocked on the window to draw his attention. ”Ah remembered something,” he said. “There was two boats - skiffs - round the back of the house when ah got there. They ain’t there no more. Could be that’s who hit me.”

Howard nods and quickly returns to the house. He relays Oscar's information to the others.

"We'd better not waste any more time."

"If they've gone onto the water, perhaps they're trying to repeat what happened at Squatter's Lake. Are there any any more boats around?" Thomas asks, looking around.

"Well of course they're trying to repeat it" says Howard. "That's why we're not at Coney Island right now. Look, if they're out in the swamps they could be anywhere. Me, I'm searching this house. I want to know that those evil old bastards have actually been here."
