Ch. 10. Black Train Blues

The voice on the phone said, "I understand that you are a friend of my son, James. He has gone missing. I require your assistance in bringing him home again...”

A university student has gone missing. Can his friends find out what has happened to James Frazer in 1920s Massachusetts?

Lawrence takes the butcher's knife in Howard's stead, glad to finally have a real weapon.

"We'll carry them concealed," says William, taking the smaller knife and hiding it on his person, "so as not to arouse suspicion. Are you ready to go forward?"

"Let's get this over with." says Lawrence, nodding as he tucks his own blade away into his uniform.

There was a banging noise from behind them, as if the door leading back to the dining area had been opened and then allowed to slam shut...

William puts a finger to his lips briefly, then tiptoes over to the door and peeks out through it.

William can’t see anyone outside the kitchen area but from his angle, he couldn’t discount someone having stepped into the parlour. Anyone there would be hidden from view...

William looked down the carriage towards the dining area, but could see nothing beyond the wooden partition door.

The three men stood in the corridor next to the kitchen. Other than the noise of the wheels on the track, there was no further noise from the parlour end of the car.

"Let's proceed forward," whispers William. "Remember, just act normal, and these creatures won't know we're not their own kind. Don't let them see that you're afraid."

Lawrence nods in reply, trying his best to remove any expression or emotion from his face in some effort to mimic the stewards' odd demeanor.

Having already been this way, William lead Howard and Lawrence though to the door and into the next carriage.

Unlike the smart wood panelling of the dining carriage, this was altogether more utilitarian, with none of the finery of the first class carriages. More markedly, however, was the rancid stench of blood and human filth - William was expecting it but his friends were left reeling!

As they tried not to vomit, they noticed a green glow that gently pulsed underfoot. Sickly-green, contorted tubes pulsed with a steady rhythm, like arteries carrying the lifeblood from a heart...
