Ch. 9 Copperhead Road

The voice on the phone said, "I understand that you are a friend of my son, James. He has gone missing. I require your assistance in bringing him home again...”

A university student has gone missing. Can his friends find out what has happened to James Frazer in 1920s Massachusetts?

Yes, it’s an oil light. Kerosene/Parrafin, if it makes a difference.

Thomas looks around for anything he could throw towards the snake, either as bait to lure it away or as a weapon to try to drive it off.

Lawrence brandishes his rifle like a club, opting for brute force in this situation. He still keeps his distance from the large snake, however; the farther that thing is from him, the better.
Spoiler:
Quick question, what skill would be used for clubbing with the rifle, and what damage does it do?

Spoiler:
A rifle wielded as a club counts as a large club, so 25% base chance to hit with 1d8 + dB damage bonus.

Thomas - I’ll take a spot hidden roll to see if you can see anything useful.

As Lawrence watched the snake, the other three quickly searched for something else to use. Howard and William came up empty-handed, but Thomas turned up a dusty gravedigger’s shovel tucked away behind one of the church doors.

Behind them, the door creaked open and the Sheriff stepped into the main part of the chapel, albeit he was still talking to the man behind him as he entered.

"There's a shovel here; maybe we can use it to move the snake." Thomas whispers.

"That's just bound to irritate it," Lawrence hurriedly answers in a whisper, "I say we club it and run."

"Brain it with the shovel and the rifle, and let's go," hisses William with a nod.

Spoiler:
The other characters have damage bonuses and I don't, so others should do that. I see on his character sheet that Bernie actually has 70% in Cosh skill, so he could effectively use the shovel as a weapon, but I'm not sure if he's with us.

It occurs to William that you haven’t seen Bernie since Amesbury when he stayed behind to poke around.

Spoiler:
I’ll bookmark Bernie as a potential future investigation ;)

In the meantime, please describe what you are doing to tackle/avoid the snake.

When the others attack the snake, William tries to slip past it while it's distracted, prepared to dodge if it lunges for him.

The men emerged quickly from the church to meet the giant snake on the church step. The snake reared up instantly, its rattle a blur as it sounded out a warning. Lawrence swung his rifle like a club but the snake whipped out of the way, before striking back with venom-flecked fangs which missed by a mile. Thomas followed hard on his heels and caught the snake with a solid strike with the flat of the spade, causing the creature to hiss violently.

As the snake was distracted, William slipped past it, followed by Howard, who helped James down the steps. Brophy huffed and puffed as he ran after them. They could see that the church stood on a small island, with paths leading away in all directions. From inside the church there was a shout of consternation... ...

William runs away from the church, heading toward anything that looks like a dock where they might find a boat.
