"Right, we'll go look for her," says Alexander, throwing on his coat and gloves. "One bright side to all this snow is that she'll have left clear tracks."

Suitably attired and with his revolver deep in his coat pocket, Captain FitzWilliam followed Alexander out of the door, immediately scanning the ground for footprints.

The investigators set off towards the groundskeepers cottage, while Melody volunteers to help search inside the house. The snow is ankle deep for the men, but they are able to pass through it without too much difficulty. Presently, they reach the cottage.

Captain FitzWilliam held up a hand to pause the party before they all tromped up to the door and obliterated any tracks. ”Wait!” he said, and he knelt quickly, leaning on his cane, and scanned the snow for signs of a child’s footprints.

While they wait, Isolde whispers,
"If we have no luck here maybe we should try the graveyard... and then Hobs Field."

The door opens and Mr Smith peers out.

"Are you looking for Miss Ursula?" he asks. "She's not here. What's the matter?"

"Aye, we're looking for her," says Alexander. "Josephine let her play outside, but she hasn't come back and is overdue. Have ye seen her this morning?"

Captain FitzWilliam understood that Smith was fond of the little girl, but at this stage wasn’t prepared to take anything for granted anymore. He studied the man for any signs that he wasn’t telling the truth.

Smith is alarmed. “I was just going to check on her. She was down by the pond. Another child was there with her, so I thought I’d leave her be and let her try and make a friend.”

Spoiler:
Smith's alarm is genuine. He's not hiding anything.

"Aye, let's go," says Alexander, already moving. "Who is this other child? I wasn't aware there were any others here." Far more likely this child is responsible for what happened last night than pixies, he thinks.

Smith doesn't look round as he replies, as he is intent on reaching the pond.

“I only saw from a distance. I assumed it was one of the gypsy children. It was about thirty to forty minutes ago.”

At the pond, it is plain to see that the snow has been disturbed. A trail appears to lead away, towards the moors.

Alexander has no idea how to read the tracks, but it seems obvious which why they went.

"I expect she must have wandered off with a friend to the gypsy camp," Percy says. "Remember that gypsy boy who came to the house asking for food the other day?"
