Music From a Darkened Room

The year is 1999. A group of agents with the FBI quickly discover a routine case is anything but. Thrust into a world that's as incomprehensible as it is deadly, can this team hope to hold back the darkness?

For a second, both women stare at each other, their hands separated only by the mirror. Isabelle says nothing.

And then with a sudden movement, her arm lashes out, emerges from the mirror, and grasps onto Vanessa, pulling her inside it!

Spoiler:
Vanessa stumbles through the mirror and finds herself landing in a realm of water. All around her water stretches in every direction, and there are no hints of land anywhere. In addition, the water itself is very cold and slimey. It is hard to see much, and the only visible things are distant dark shapes that seem vaguely humanoid. Closer to her is a bright vortex of light. Where it leads is anybody's guess, but it seems to be the only thing within reach.

Already she is having trouble breathing, and if she does not find a way out soon she will begin to drown.

OOC:   First of all, please roll san loss for entering the mirror world, 0/1d6 unnatural.

You can attempt to swim towards the vortex, the figures are further away and you would likely drown before you get there. If you'd like to do this please make a Str*5 or Swim roll. In either case, you have a penalty of -20 for reasons that will become apparent in just a minute. You will need more than one success to reach the light, but can only roll once a turn.

If you'd like to try and figure out what these figures are, please roll alertness. But be advised that if you do this your penalty for swimming will go up to -30 for that round.

Nik and Chaz both see Vanessa place her hand on the mirror. Then some invisible force appears to grab her, and she falls right inside the mirror and vanishes on the other side! Neither of them see anything out of the ordinary looking into the mirror, and there is no sign of where Vanessa has gone... or a sign of whatever pulled her in.

OOC:   both of you can please roll san, 0/1d3 unnatural.

"Jesus fucking Christ!" exclaims Nik.

Without hesitating, he reaches his arm towards the mirror, hoping to catch Vanessa.

Spoiler:
In spite of the strangeness and danger of the situation, Vanessa remains perfectly calm. She gets a good look at the distant figures before trying to swim to the vortex. It slows her down, but she doubts she would have gotten very far anyway.

Spoiler:
Sanity roll (current level 63) for passing through the mirror:
Mr. Handy rolled 1d100:
2

[spoiler]Alertness roll (51% skill) to identify the figures:

[spoiler]STR x 5 roll (40% - 30 = 10% stat) to swim toward the vortex:
Mr. Handy rolled 1d100:

Nik rushes towards the mirror and attempts to grab Vanessa, but it happened so fast there was no way for him to reach her in time. His arm lands hard against the glass; apparently wherever Vanessa went he could not follow.

Spoiler:
Her calm mind allows Vanessa to examine the figures. They all are differently shaped, young and old, male and female. One Vanessa can determine is Barbara Turner. Or at least,a grotesque parody of the woman. Her body is bloated and clearly dead, and she floats in place in the dark waters. On her face is a look of absolute anguish. Vanessa can swear however that she somehow sees the woman's eyes moves as she looks at her. The other figures are harder to identify, and of course there is not time to look at them all. But doing some quick arithmetic, she determines there are the same number of floating bodies here as people who had died inside the house.

Vanessa attempts to swim closer to the light, but makes little progress. The water is thick like molasses, and she struggles to get anywhere within. In addition, there is a heaviness to this realm that seems to weigh on her. Vanessa feels intense fear and suffering, the type of suffering that can only exist in a place that has marinated in it for several generations. But she also feels an intense hatred, one behind comprehension or reason. It seems to engulf this place. And she knows if she does not get out of here soon it will engulf her as well, and she will become another lost soul.

OOC:   Vanessa suffers one hp damage. And yes, I'll allow it.

Spoiler:
Vanessa continues moving towards the light, but it is frustratingly slow. Still, she's a good swimmer, and she manages to make it almost half way there.

There comes no verbal response to her words, but Vanessa feels the hatred again, centered this time on her. It almost freezes her in place. There is no human emotion behind it. It is raw animalistic rage .

OOC:   Vanessa suffers another HP damage. Vanessa cannot see Isabelle, but of course she's not able to see every single body perfectly. Please make another athletics roll -20.

Spoiler:
Her blind desperation is not enough, and Vanessa barely makes headway. She gets a little closer, but nowhere near enough. The light still seems so far away, and she feels herself growing weaker.

An image appears unbidden in Vanessa's mind.

Isabelle Wheeler, inside the house. She watches her take her last breath. Then... here, this cold, barren plane.

OOC:   Vanessa loses two more hp. Please make another roll at -20.

Spoiler:
She's making progress, but it's not enough and she's tiring. The light is closer, but unless she gets another burst of strength she'll surely drown before reaching it.

More of the image. The cold and misery is neverending. The house is warm, and full of life. A young married couple, smiling and happy. Then, fighting, a rising cacophony of terror. Energy. Empowerment. Distraction.

OOC:   Vanessa loses 2 more. Please roll again. The same penalty applies. And yes, I'm with Vanessa in not wanting her to die here!

Thanks! I think a problem with this part of the scenario is that survival is completely dependent on random dice rolls, unless I've missed something, and my odds are not good. The others would have had better odds, but one of them still could have died solely due to bad luck.

Spoiler:
Her lungs are on fire, and her limbs feel full of lead. She knows she only has one or maybe two tries left in her before she dies... but she's beginning to suspect that would be a mercy not afforded her if she faltered here.

The cold continues to spread through her, but Vanessa realizes it's an internal cold as well. Something is feeding off of her life energy. She is drowning, both figuratively and literately.

More images. People moving into the house, being tormented, their warmth stolen. The all encompassing cold fades, but only for a moment. But it will never be enough. More misery is the only salve, brief as it is.

OOC:   Lose 2 more HP. Another roll please. And that's fair. Without spoiling too much yet, This could have been avoided, but Vanessa also got a bit unlucky. Still, it's not over yet!

But It was still so far away. There was no way she'd be able to make it there. She could barely move. But something in her pushed her forward. Maybe it was knowledge of the fate that would befall her if she failed to escape this place.

OOC:   Vanessa loses two more HP, but she does not need to roll to stay conscious. Please make me two rolls this time. The first is the usual roll. The second is a luck roll. Good luck. I'm really pulling for Agent Marchand here.

Re: Music From a Darkened Room

Spoiler:
It's over. Vanessa can no longer even move. A shame; the vortex itself is so close. Another moment or two and she may have reached it.

Then an idea occurs to her. She is not being just physically tormented here; she is also suffering mentally. If she summons all of her willpower, reminds herself as to why she wants so badly to escape here, she may be able to summon enough strength to get one more chance at escape. But she knows this is the absolute last chance she will have. If this fails, whatever fate will befall her will be out of her hands.

OOC:   Vanessa must roll 1d6. Whatever she rolls she must immedialty subtract from her POW permanently. This will also effect her Willpower and next breaking point, when and if she reaches her current one.But in making this sacrifice, she gets one final roll, and every point of POW she loses gives her a +10 to the roll, factoring in the penalty. So for example, if she rolls 2 she loses 2 POW and gains a +20 bonus to her roll, putting her up to 51. She is in essence putting all of her remaining willpower into this.

Alternatively, you could just have Vanessa give up and accept her fate if you'd rather not play with a weakened character, though remember it is possible to increase a stat during one of your downtime phases. But the choice is up to you, and how strong you feel Vanessa's willpower is.
