[IC - LA] The Los Angeles Times (Holly, Chris.)

A decade ago, a band of occult investigators battled against the summoning of an ancient and monstrous evil. They failed. Now you must piece together the puzzle and finish what they could not. The stakes are high, and so is the price to pay. Can you do it?

Right before you split up, Ian calls the offices of the Los Angeles Times. They'll be waiting for Holly and Christopher and will provide all the support they can. It's a ride of about half an hour to get to the newspaper's offices, and by the time you get there, a steady rain is falling on the city, and looking at the black sky above, it promises to get much worse.

Spoiler:
OOC:   Both of you roll Sense Trouble.

As Holly drives towards the newspaper's office, she notices a black car following. She isn't certain at first, but as the time passes, and she makes a couple of turns, she grows more and more sure, and points the car out to Christopher. You are now getting close to the newspaper's office address. There appears to be only one man in the car, and you can't make much of his face from the distance, but he appears to have black hair and no beard.

"We're being followed," says Holly, glancing in the mirror. "Clean-shaven man with black hair in a black car. I can probably lose him, but should we? If I try to shake him, he'll know we're onto him. We could also try to lead him into a trap and see what we can get out of him, since there's two of us and he's alone, but that could be dangerous. Or we can just continue about our business for now without tipping our hand."

Christopher Fontana

Christopher nods at Holly's revelation "I can't check without the person following noticing." he says with a frown, this is a worrying situation indeed. "Only one man... if we carry on to the newspaper's offices then he might be able to call on reinforcements while we were inside, if he had reinforcements to call on of course. We have to assume that the person is somehow affiliated to the oriental thugs we ran into and maybe any remnants of Echavaria's gang of followers."

Christopher opens his briefcase to double check that his shiny new automatic pistol is inside "I am armed, so we could attempt to 'turn-the-tables'." he says pulling the pistol from the briefcase, he doesn't sound too confident however. "I guess the best thing to do would be to pull up outside some stores.. see where out tail parks, perhaps there would be a way to sneak up on him."* he adds, as a plan comes together...

OOC:   * Pull up outside some stores... see where the tail parks... go into a store.. exit out the back and use the 'service' ally to get around and behind the other guy...

sounds plausible?

"I'm armed too," says Holly, the weight of the pistol against her thigh reassuring her. "He might not be expecting that." She looks around for a suitable place to park.

You park in front of an elegant cafè that seems likely to have a secondary exit. While entering, you notice the black car parking thirty or fourty meters behind you.

OOC:   If you want to try and sneak up on him, I'll need a Stealth roll from you.

"I'm not all that sneaky," says Holly. "Maybe I should wait in the car behind the wheel while you go inside. Then, when you make your move, I can join you. Hopefully he'll stay outside the whole time watching me, thinking I'm just waiting for you. If he comes after me while you're in there, you can still get the drop on him, but I don't think he will. He doesn't know we're onto him yet. Of course, it might look strange if we don't both go in there together. I could go in with you, but then you could take the lead in sneaking up on him, and I can join you once you're in position, or if he spots you."

Christopher Fontana

Christopher manages to spot where the car that's tailing them parks, it's a bit further away than he would have hoped for but he should still manage to get 'the drop' on who-ever was driving.

"No, I think it's best if you stay here in the car, less chance that our 'new friend' will leave his car is we split up. I'd suggest that you wait on the side-walk rather than in the car and keep an eye out. If the mysterious man comes towards you then get into the Café and stay there."

Christoper quickly removes his automatic pistol from his briefcase and tucks it into the waist-band of his trousers, hidden by his jacket, as he gets out of the car. After taking a sneaky look he leans on the door and speaks through the open window. "Looks like he's still there, wish me luck!" he says with a wink and then enters the Café and locates the other exit.

Walking carefully, without haste he circles around and approaches the 'target car'...

Christopher sneaks out from the back door and traces back some fifty meter before returning to the main street. He can see the black car fifteen meters ahead, and starts walking slowly towards it. Running would get him there faster, but it would certainly alert the man inside. So he walks, trying to look just like another passer-by trying to reach his office before the weather gets worse. After what seems to be minutes, but it's in reality only a few seconds, Christopher reaches the car and open the door. He slides inside, pointing the gun at the man, keeping it low so that no one from outside would be able to see it.

Image

The man opens his eyes wide and raises his hands: "Whoa! What the... if it's money you want, you can take my wallet, just don't shoot me all right?"

Spoiler:
You can see he is feigning surprise, and you noticed from his expression that he recognized you when you entered.

Holly remains standing where she is, acting as a lookout, keeping an eye out for any sign of police or anyone taking an interest in the car. She doesn't intend to approach it unless Christopher signals to her or if there's trouble. She has a dose of sedative prepared in her medical bag in case they need to put the man to sleep.

Christoper Fontana

"This isn't a robbery, put both hands on the steering wheel and keep them there..." he says as menacingly as he can. "Now.. why are you following my colleague and I?"

OOC:   When appropriate Christopher will get the other man to 'honk the horn' and wave through the open window to attract Holly's attention.

The man expression turns to rage for a second, then he says with disgust:"All right, asshole. You got me. I messed up good, thought you and pretty lady there were a couple of amateurs. So, how do you wanna play this out?"

Christopher Fontana

Keeping his gun trained on the other man Christoper waves out of the window to attract Holly's attention.

"Watch your language in front of the lady..." Christopher says as he quickly jabs the muzzle of his automatic pistol into the other man's ribs. "So, why are you trailing us?" he asks in a conversational manner waiting for Dr. Chastain to saunter up the side-walk.

"Look, it's nothing personal, alright? I'm just doing my work. Be happy, you have got an admirer in LA. He wanted to know everything about you guys", he says sarcastically.

Outside the car, Holly sees Christopher gesturing her to get into the car.

Holly sidles up to the car and slips into the back seat, behind the driver. "You know who we are," she says. "It's only fair that you tell us who you are. And, while you're at it, you can tell us who your work for."

"Look, I can't really go around telling the name of my clients, right?", he says raising his hands and clearly faking a smile, then says: "Look, let me give you some free advice, just because you have a pretty face and I would hate to see it in a body bag", again the fake smile, aimed clearly at Holly this time, "You guys are in over your head, even if you don't seem to notice. Let me talk with my client, I'm sure we can negotiate a deal that's satisfactory for all parties involved. I can get you some money I think, a nice sum, and in exchange you'll go back to your homes, and families, and friends, and forget any of this ever happened. What do you say?"

"We are aware of the stakes," says Holly, looking him in the eye, "We can't just walk away, and we're not in this for the money. We've already been threatened, and I've taken a beating. We know what we're up against, and we know they play for keeps. You haven't told us your name, but I'm sure it's on your identification." She glances at Christopher for a second. "You might not name your clients, but they're probably the same bunch we're investigating - unless there are two groups of murderous, drug-dealing perverts. You might have been better off doing some research into them before agreeing to work for them. They may pay well, but I'm guessing they don't tolerate failure. And you've failed, now that we've made you. At the very least, they'll stop paying you. Or maybe they'll put you in a body bag. They might do that anyway, just to make sure you don't tell anyone what you know.

"However, there's a way out for you. I have a counteroffer, one that you'll find profitable. You continue to report back to your clients, telling them what we tell you to tell them. They're satisfied, and they continue to pay you. In addition, we pay you and become clients of yours."

"Well, I'm glad to hear you have thought this through. And you got that right, shitstain, I have failed. But if i start talking, it's gonna get a whole lot fucking worse, and my client... well, I'm not keen on getting on his bad side. So I think I'm going to shut myself up, yeah, that's what I'll do", and he stops talking.

Christopher can make a quick search of his pockets to find out his wallet and ID. There's some cash in the wallet, but not much. The ID reveals the man's name, Jack Pizner, and a home address, in the southern part of the city, no more than twenty minutes away from where you are.
