Turn 8 Upkeep Phase

Mark shudders, having a flashback to a muddy trench in France, but he quickly recovers.

Spoiler:
Gain 1 resource and draw 1 card.

Since I have only 1 damage on me, I take no horror.

I don't think you have to take the horror as long as you're not engaged, which by default you're not (he's Aloof).

Turn 9 Mythos Phase

Mark can't shake the feeling of impending doom.

Spoiler:
Fast Action: Activate Sophie and take 1 direct damage.
Fast Action: Spend 1 resource on Physical Training to get +1 Will on this test.
Will test (3 + 2[Sophie] + 1[Physical Training] + 1[Let me handle this!] = 7 vs. 5):

Spoiler:

I don't need to handle your Mythos card, as all you need to do is Investigate and hopefully Resign after succeeding, so it won't affect you. It would affect me, as I may need to fight if you don't succeed, and I'll need all three actions for that. Instead I'll commit it to the test to try to save my other cards. I think you should go first.

Tentacles, automatic failure. I presume I can't lose a hidden peril card.

Aw nuts!

Image

Turn 9 Investigator Phase

1 Image 5 +1 +1[Fingerprint Kit] vs. 4 +2, chaos token 0 ; success!

2 Resign

"We have all laid aside disguise, but you" says the Stranger, pointing at Withers, who is at a total loss about what to do next

Withers throws his bag of peanuts at the Stranger, an act of petulant defiance, it bursts, and peanuts rain down upon him (it?) and plop into the seawater. One second, two and it steams and hisses

"What have you done?" whines the Stranger "I'm melting. Melting!" and with that fizzles and then bangs like a firecracker

This scene is too much for Withers, he wades to a smashed window, and, heedless of glass sherds, throws himself outside

Turn 9 Investigator Phase

Mark's perception of the events that followed is very different from Norman's, and neither of them can make any sense out of them afterwards when they compare notes. He sees the stranger in the mask slip through a door that he was sure hadn't been there before, followed by Norman. He hurries through before it closes, and when he looks back, it is gone. The masked man runs away down the street, and Mark chases him, gun in hand. "Hey, you in the mask!" he shouts. "Stop right there!"

The Stranger stops and turns to face him. "I wear no mask," he says.

"No mask? No mask! What do you call that thing on your face, then?"

Then the Stranger vanishes, and the two moons in the sky become one.

Spoiler:
Woohoo! 8-) Well done! That's at least 5 Victory for us, as the Royal Emissary is still in the Victory display. I think I'll get a Shotgun and Extra Ammunition. :D

I actually forgot completely about my ability to draw a card whenever a card I control took damage. I would have done that twice, but I didn't need the cards anyway. I drew them now, and I got an Emergency Cache and Perception, though I couldn't have committed Perception with Whispers in Your Head (Dismay) in my hand anyway. The only other card remaining in my hand was my other Emergency Cache, and I still had 2 resources left over without playing either one.

Actions 1 and 2: Discard Whispers in Your Head (Dismay) (just in case there's a penalty for still having it at the end)
Action 3: Resign

Withers had 9 resources left--thank God I didn't take those in the Box Office. Yes, 5 XP is great. I'm gonna check Mystic cards out. We may even have more XP...

Withers places his arms akimbo and bends over, panting like a very tired dog

"We made it" he says incredulously "Mr. Harrigan, Mark, what in God's name was all that? I really don't think that the police will believe us"

"I don't rightly know what just happened," says Mark, "but we're in over our heads and we need all the help we can get. People are dead, and the police should be told what's going on. If we don't go to them, they may very well suspect us. I have friends on the force, and I think I can get them to take us seriously."

Spoiler:
Yes, I was thinking we might get additional XP, which would be wonderful. I'd very much like an Elder Sign Amulet, but I don't know if I'll get enough for everything I want.

Since you were the lead investigator in the final turn, I think the ultimate decision is yours.

"Very well, then"

Resolution 1: Fleeing from the theatre, you head straight to the police station in Easttown. Bursting through the door, to the stares of onlookers and police officers alike, you demand to see Sheriff Engle, stressing the importance of your visit. The desk sergeant, who is lazily working through a stack of paperwork, shakes his head and raises a finger in silence, then points to a nearby chair. The wait is excruciating. Every moment is an eternity. The hands of the nearby clock crawl. You drum your fingers on the desk. You tap your feet. You constantly peer over your shoulder to make sure the pallid mask of the Stranger is not watching you through the front window. Finally, the desk sergeant puts his pen down and sits up, beckoning you. “Alright, what’s so important now?” You are only halfway through your explanation of the night’s events when he sighs and shakes his head. “Look, if this is some kind of joke, it ain’t funny,” he says. “We had officers downtown all night. Don’t try to feed me some hooey straight to my face.” You insist, but the desk sergeant rises to his feet and opens the door, motioning for you to leave. He raises his voice. “What, you think we’re not busy enough or something? Beat it!” He mumbles about “blind birds” behind your back as he escorts you out of the station.

You know what you saw earlier that night. Frustrated, you head back to the Ward Theatre to find some kind of proof you can take to the police. You are surprised to find that the front door of the theatre is locked. You are about to decide whether or not to break down the door when you see a notice on the wall near the entrance. “Don’t be a wet blanket! Come to The King in Yellow cast party. 8pm, at the home of Constance Dumaine, 1452 Atlantic Avenue. Formal dress only.” You tear the notice from the wall and fold it into your coat pocket, hoping it will lead you to the answers you seek.

Æ Did you really think the police would help you?
Æ In your Campaign Log, record that you tried to warn the police. Mark one Conviction in your Campaign Log.
Æ If you “stole from the box offce,” record in your Campaign Log that the police are suspicious of you.
Æ In your Campaign Log, record that the Stranger is on to you. Add The Man in the Pallid Mask weakness to the lead investigator’s deck (does not count towards deck size). For the remainder of this campaign, any time the bearer of The Man in the Pallid Mask leaves the campaign for any reason, choose a new investigator to become the bearer of The Man in the Pallid Mask weakness, and add it to that investigator’s deck.
Æ In your Campaign Log, under “Chasing the Stranger,” place two tally marks. For the remainder of the campaign, keep a running tally of the number of times e Man in the Pallid Mask is defeated during a game. Each tally will bring you one step closer to the truth.
Æ Each investigator earns experience equal to the Victory X value of each card in the victory display.

No more XP, but 5 is good. The "Lead Investigator" is not the first player on a particular turn but someone who decides for the game group, as well as the recipient of good and bad stuff, like the one who gets the weakness card. Withers? or decide randomly

Spoiler:
I think it should go in your deck. You can possibly defeat him in a single action, whereas it would take me multiple actions and I'd risk taking horror if I tried. That way, if we're separated and he appears, you can investigate and take care of him.

I upgraded my deck, going with the Shotgun and Extra Ammunition as planned. You can find it here.

Thanks! Yeah, the shotgun is practically made for him, and if I'm lucky enough to get the Extra Ammunition in my hand, I can reload it. It's a boss monster killer! Mists of R'lyeh is perfect for your character too.

Scenario II: The Last King

If anyone has the answers to the questions that burn in your mind, it’s the cast and crew of The King in Yellow. With no other leads to pursue, you put on your best clothes and head to 1452 Atlantic Avenue, where a woman named Constance Dumaine is hosting an event in celebration of the play’s one-night engagement in Arkham.

Image Still tough, thank God we haven't got any tablets in our chaos bag

Here's my upgraded deck https://arkhamdb.com/deck/view/609654

"I wore this penguin suit to my wedding--1887, it was" Withers chuckles to himself, remembering times past "and it still fits--well, it's a little tight around the waist"

We should draw our opening hand next

"I wasn't even born yet then," says Mark. He wears his own, much newer tuxedo, with a trench coat over it to keep out the cold and conceal his weapons. The conversation has brought back memories of Sophie again, and it is all he can do to keep from crying.
