IC-OMAHA-Wing and a Prayer(Helicopter Group)

Z-Day - 4:13 PM Central Time - In the air, 10 miles west of Omaha, Nebraska
In the helicopter-
The Bell helicopter flew eastwards over Route 92. It was still mostly farm country, but the suburbs of Omaha were coming up to the east, a short distance beyond a river that flowed north and south. The distant skyline of Omaha was visible on the eastern horizon, and Lincoln was a similar distance to the south. The four women and one man riding inside were on a desperate mission, and the fate of the world depended upon their success.

Dr. Brigetta Hausmann sat on the left side of the rear bench seat, her broken left arm in a sling. She had barely survived being attacked by Horst after he had died and risen up as a zombie while she had been trying to save his life, but from everything she had learned he would have been even more dangerous had he lived. Her assistant Stephanie Bridges sat beside her, typing rapidly on a laptop as she had been doing for hours now. Her efforts were finally starting to bear fruit, and she would be done before too long - though still some time after their expected arrival in Omaha. She could feel the heavy burden riding on her slender shoulders, but she was not same woman she had been yesterday. She had discovered much about herself that she hadn't known before. Only in her wildest fantasies had she imagined that she could be a hero, shooting zombies in the head with deadly accuracy to save her friends and using her scientific knowledge to actually save the world. Bo's murder still left a hole in her heart, one that would always be there. She had never wished anyone dead before, but she dearly hoped that killer Gardner was dead. He had slaughtered five people, attacked Erica, and abducted poor Kathryn McCoy. She'd have killed him herself if she could have, but she had a more important task to accomplish. On her right sat Dr. Bernard Smith, still not believing in extraterrestrials in spite of everything he had witnessed.

In the front, Trooper Erica Spears sat in the pilot's seat and mechanic Lucy Armstrong was in the co-pilot's seat. During the flight, Erica had shown Lucy the basics of how to fly a helicopter, but Lucy knew she still had a lot to learn. Erica flew with confidence and tremendous skill that came from years of training and practice. She watched the fuel gauge carefully, monitoring fuel usage and making subtle course corrections to conserve it. There was just enough to reach their destination, and she needed every drop she could squeeze out of it. She glanced back at her passengers, knowing how important it was that they get through and finish their job. Her heart went out to Stephanie, who never failed to impress her.

"We're getting pretty close now," said Erica. "Let's call in and let them know you're coming." She called the Crisis Response Center back on the radio. "This is Trooper Erica Spears of the Nebraska State Police in NSP Seven-Eight-Romeo calling the CDC Crisis Response Center in Omaha. Our ETA is five minutes. Do you copy? Over."

In the helicopter-
After a pause, a woman's voice answered: "This is Dr. Helene Saunders. I read you. We're glad you're finally almost here. Over."

"What's been going on at your end?" asked Erica as she flew across the river and approached the suburbs of Omaha.

"And where's Adam Donnelly?" piped in Stephanie. "Why isn't he talking to us now?"

"He's fine," said Dr. Saunders. "He's up on the roof right now to guide you in. Look for a circle of road flares; that's your landing pad. He's also got the EMP generator ready for after you finish your part. Things have been pretty peaceful here. I just hope it lasts."

"So do I. I'm about 20 or 25 minutes from finishing my work."

"Good to hear!"

In the helicopter-
"Who else is there from the CDC?" asked Stephanie.

"Only a few of them made it in," answered Dr. Saunders. "We've got two scientists: Dr. Edward Singh and Dr. Liz Somerville, and there's also Rachel Cohen in charge of security. She really knows what she's doing."

Both Dr. Hausmann and Stephanie recognized the names of the scientists, having worked with both of them before. "I'm glad they're okay," continued Stephanie. "We can sure use their expertise, and they're both brilliant. Nobody works harder than Dr. Singh, not even me. And Liz is a wonderful friend. It'll be great to see and work with her again."

"There's a science teacher named Chester Johnson and some of his students who are helping out too."

"I can see Omaha from here," said Erica as she flew over the suburb of Elkhorn on her way in. "We should be coming in for a landing in just a few minutes."

"You don't know how much of a relief that is for all of us here. I don't know how much longer-"

The transmission was suddenly cut off. "Hello?" said Erica. There was no response. "Hello?!"

In the helicopter-
"Oh, no," moaned Stephanie as she typed.

"I'm sure they're all right," said Erica. "Probably just a communications glitch."

"But if we can't send a message out from Omaha...well, Adam will fix it."

"That's the spirit! It's too late to turn back now anyway. We're only a few miles away, and we're running on fumes."

Indeed, the helicopter had flown over a number of golf courses and Boys Town, and it had now entered the city limits of Omaha. The urban landscape stretched out on all sides, a sea of death and destruction. Zombies roamed the streets, in packs and individually. Small fires burned here and there, and occasionally a large one consumed a city block or more. Vehicles were left abandoned or crashed in the clogged streets, and the dead bodies of those lucky enough not to rise lay strewn about.

In the helicopter-
Erica peered ahead as she flew over the devastated city, trying to make as straight a course as she could toward Brooks High School, where the Crisis Response Center was located. "There it is!" she called, barely catching a glimpse of a ring of orange on a rooftop. She came in low, knowing that there was no fuel to spare. "We're coming in for a landing. Make sure your seatbelts are fastened and your trays are in the upright position."

In the helicopter-
Erica flew closer to the school. As she began her final approach, she and her passengers could make out more detail. The school was a two story building, enclosed by a chain link fence. A huge satellite dish took up much of the eastern side of the roof, and the circle of road flares was on the western side. Three people were standing outside a small enclosure in the middle of the north side of the roof.
