You are traveling in the jungle accompanied by doctors, nurses, and mules carrying supplies along a path through a wooded area. It is very hot and the place is infested with (small) mosquitos. You cannot see more that a couple of metros with all that vegetation and the road is very small.
The leader of the expedition is an italian doctor called Ursini and he is been very nervous in this last two days since you left civilization.

June thought she was used to heat because of her early years in Egypt, but Bolivia's air feels very different from that. She's looking forward to whenever the group can stop (and wondering how some of the others seem to be able to handle it so well).

After the last expedition in Antarctica, Butch thought it might be nice to go someplace warm. He is having some serious misgivings about that now as he swats bugs and tries to stay on the narrow path. This isn't what he imagined. He does wonder why Dr. Ursini has been out of sorts and decides to move up closer to him so he can ask.
"Is there something on your mind Doctor? You seem like you're waiting for something bad to happen."

Jan strides forward with her rifle perched on her shoulder. She constantly scans the bushes either side and the trees above, marvelling at the luxuriant growth and the myriad insect life. She catches up with June,
“This is amazing; look at these lianas, they’re huge, must be a hundred years old. Look! I’ve never seen a frog like it- bright blue, probably poisonous. Pity we’re making so much noise; scaring away the big stuff; tapir, jaguar, anaconda; I can’t wait.”
She’s too excited to be bothered with the heat.

Father Malone is well used to the jungle and he trudges on, seemingly unaffected by the heat and humidity despite his impractical looking priest's garb, dog collar and all.
He looks around at his companions, and the two new recruits from the university...women, huh, how the world changes. Still, they look a bit tougher than those male academics he's been on the last two expeditions with.
As they have walked deeper in the jungle he's been feeling increasingly uneasy. Nothing he can put his finger on but things just don't seem right. Given what has happened the last two times he went into the Amazon perhaps it is no surprise he is concerned.
Alex absentmindedly fingers the ugly idol he carries in his pocket. A memento from his time as a missionary deep in the Brazilian Amazon.
He studies Dr Ursini, something seems to be troubling him too.

Crowley:
Crowley, pipe clenched between his teeth, is fuming. He had been, not for the first time, reading to his companions the various letters of rejection he had received from various pulp magazines.
"They had the gall to say my Antarctic adventure lacked the lurid descriptions of scantily clad native women common to my other writing! The cheek!"
"And do they not understand the distinct lack of scantily clad native women in the Antarctic? Penguins, yes, zombie Nazis, yes, women, no. It is too much! I may as well resign myself to a life of lecturing and occasional exploration. Clearly, my writing talents will not be recognised until long after I'm dead."

Butch watches until Charles disappears into the jungle. He doesn't like releasing him back into the wild when they know so little but there really is no way they can keep him prisoner either. Looking at the map the others are discussing, something pops into his head.
"Obviously I can't be sure but this sure looks like a grid. When I was in the army and we were mining an area, we would use a grid to show what was mined. That could be the scribbled out areas."Butch runs his fingers through his hair and and looks back down at the map. "On the other hand, if they are looking for something, this could be a search grid and they've already covered the area that is scribbled out. The only way to figure it out is to go down and see if we can see where the river is in relation to this map."

The writing is in strange hieroglyphics similar to those used by the Mayans, but it is not exactky the same. You identify the central point as the one you must achieve, but there are several others that are marked also for some reason. The closest seems just sligthly at west if the river.
Meanwhile, the doxtor returns and says:
-I have contacted New York and spoke with doctor Shapiro, the organizer of the expedition. He asked to speak with doctor Ursini, but I told him he was dead, so he wants to speak with someone else.

You all arrive at a tent with a radio. The doctor says to Doctor Shapiro presents you as the people who came with Ursini. He then speaks:
"You’ve probably guessed by now that Caduceus does more than provide humanitarian aid and cultural expeditions. Our teams also seek out threats against humanity and deal with them. You are one such team. Ursini was supposed to explain this to you all. On March 4th, an artillery shell hit a site of interest near to the aid camp you are now in. Some kind of ancient guardian was released and may still be at large. We don’t
know what it is, but we consider it to be dangerous, so be careful. We’re interested in what this guardian is protecting. We believe that you’ll find a temple in the local area. Inside the temple, you’ll f ind a mummy. Your job is to bring the mummy back to us. Alive! If you need any special equipment, we can drop it by plane".

Joshua Meadham made his fortune in the pharmaceutical business. And suddenly in 1912 he sold the pharmaceutical empire he had built up over the previous thirty years. Joshua Meadham took the proceeds of the sale and used them to found a charitable organization devoted to providing emergency medical care across the globe, especially for those areas affected by epidemics, natural disasters, and war. He called this organization Caduceus (pronounced cad-OO-see-us or cad-U-see-us), after the staff of Hermes.

There is a silence for a moment and then Shapiro resumes: "Some of the things you are telling me aren't a surprise, others are, but maybe our superiors know more. We arent exactly at war against serpent men: We are at war against any threats to humakind. We suspected that the serpent men were organized but if they know of our group and are active against us, it is very serious. I never heard that name N'kai; about Mu just some vague rumors. That mummy is very old and coud give us insight of our enemies, but you seem to know more than I know now. I'm waiting for a full report as soon as you arrive here. He starts doing the descent. He passes the last trees and then dives to the ground but when it seems he would crash it, he makes a movement and straights the plane and makes the landing. Alex pockets his revolver, slings his shotgun over his shoulder, and ensures his flashlight is working. He looks at the rifle he 'liberated' from a German and decides it won't be of much use in a narrow stairwell or underground. He packs his machete, a first aid kit, and the two sticks of dynamite he pilfered earlier. He also has a few personal items such as his bottle of whiskey, some holy water, a Bible, and his matches and cigarillos. He then adds some water and a ration of food. Peering over the edge of the hole he lights a cigarillo and drops the match, looking out for how far down the hole goes. Looking at the narrow, wet steps he asks 'Should we rope up do you think?'

He starts smoking from a pipe and offers you to smoke too. The he speaks: "We have some legends about the shrine, I don't know how it can help you, but I'l tell you anyway."
A long time ago, The One Who Sleeps was sent to the Earth by the gods of the otherworld and instructed to create a temple. Once the temple was complete, she lay down inside to sleep and has never awoken. One day, when she wakes, we as her chosen people will follow her back to the otherworld.
We have a duty to tend her while she sleeps, leaving offerings at the five sacred pillows of slumber. The temple is invisible as long as the shrines exists. There is a guardian in each shrine. One of the shrines was destroyed by an army in a battle some time ago, but the guardian is still there and will attack anyone getting too close. The temple will only appear if the five shrines are destroyed. Inside each shrine, there is a stair that takes to a place of great beauty"

You all feel a intense smell of gasoline... and near the burned pool of oze, something else that you cannot identify, only that it is repulsive, like some rotten flesh. You continue the descent, without any problems now. The stairs go down, down, and down in a circle. Finally you arrive at the bottom.
There are murals that have been carved in the walls. You can still see some pigments, meaning that they used to be painted, but you can still undestand what it has been carved. It all seems very old, but it is impossible to know how much.
There are also several objects that you cannot seem to identify, made in simple metal: copper, gold and rusted iron.

The pilot takes you to the open field you were yesterday, near the destroyed shrine; you must walk to the other shrines. With the help of the several maps, you try to go to the nearest. In the jungle it is complicated, but after a while, you find a small path (maybe made by the locals?) that leads you directly to a small building in the middle of the trees. You suddenly notice that there isn't the usual noises from animals, no insects or even birds.
The building is about 25 square meters.

Crowley watches amazed the building. It is a very simple square, made in stone, with carvings in the walls, that are very difficult to see, but they tell a story. Besides the 2 factions of the serpent people, there was a third one, that was favourable to the humans and tried to deal in a peaceful way, but the other 2 factions were hostile to them. He also discovers that to make the pyramid emerge, they only need "to break the seal" of each shrine (open or destroy the door).
He touches the door (made in massive stone), full of glyphs, and after a while, he finds that one of the glyphs feels different to his fingers. He pushes gently... and the door opens.

The animals are all crazy screaming and you see monkeys, birds and even a jaguar passing by you and ignoring you. I'm not familiar with how shooting both barrels works in 7th edition, but in 6th you can just roll once for both of them as long as they're at the same target. Of course, with that hit from the first barrel, he's probably going down anyway.

As you aproach, you see that the ornate stone throne is carved from a huge block of jade and decorated with fine metal filigree ornamentation depicting strange forests and curious beasts.
