We need a character with the steely resolve and heroic mein of the ilk of Phyllis Crukshank!

Ah now there’s a formidable lady with an iron umbrella. She probably sells mythos-entity jam at the local fete.
We had some characterful characters in Mr Handy’s last Dr Who game.

We certainly did. Jan Hathaway-De Beers looks to be cut from similar cloth. She reminds me in some ways of Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Ark. With her 95 CON, she could probably drink anyone under the table.

Re: OOC:

by aine
Spot on! I’d forgotten about her; I almost took iron liver as a talent.
CON 95 does seem crazily high. I don’t have the Pulp rule book yet (imminent birthday present I hope) so I used The Dhole House character generator at default pulp level so I hope that fits.
I’m looking forward to playing some tabletop pulp as well.

Excellent character!

Marian Raveneood meets Karen Blixen! And quite possibly the toughest member of the team.

You have to go around saying, "I had a fahhm in Ahhfrika."

In Pulp Cthulhu, you get to roll a stat of your choice on (1D6+13) x 5, so you can get a 95 if you're very lucky.

Re: OOC:

Yeah, my character Alex Malone has a POW of 95. Pity his other stats are rather more mundane.

Is there room for one more? (And is there a niche you need filling? I was thinking of either a martial artist Outsider, or a Hard-Boiled type but with a more elegant veneer).

With your character, we get 6, the limit that I accept.
Very well, your character can be a student of the MU. The group need someone with "ninja" skills (like stealth, locksmith). And write a couple of lines about the double character.

I'll get back to you in a day or so.

Edited: Posted for approval. One of her Pulp Talents is Handy - given her backstory, I had the idea of swapping a couple of the skills it applies to.

June is another great character! She should have 19 HP rather than 17. Would Locksmith also include the making of locks (which would free up skill points for other skills)?

No, making locks is a different skill (and you correctly included in craft). You can atually make keys with locksmith and dismantle locks, but not create them.
You need now to create your shadow character in 2 lines (unless it is your father) and we are ready to go.

My knowledge of South America is pretty average.

I saw something about one or another country in South America that lost its only sea port in a border war. But to this day it maintains a landlocked navy.

Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Re: OOC:

Posted: Sat Jun 12, 2021 7:01 am
by Mephistophilis
That's Bolivia. They have a navy but no coast line (although Lake Titicaca is pretty big). I think they lost their access to the sea in a war with Chile. Paraguay is the other landlocked South American country.

Paraguay tried to get an access to the sea by waging a war against several neighbors in the XIX century at the same time (Brazil, Argentina Uruguay and some others) and it didn't end well.

I'm reminded of the episode of Red Dwarf where Lister is teaching Kryten the android how to lie. He shows him a banana and asks him what it is. Kryten keeps trying to say it's an apple, but he can't. Then he finally has a breakthrough and is able to say the pieces of fruit Lister shows him are all sorts of things. He calls one of them "the Bolivian Navy on maneuvers in the South Pacific." Then Rimmer comes in and Lister tries to demonstrate what he taught Kryten.

Lister (holding up a banana): What's this?
Kryten: It's a banana.
Rimmer: You taught him that? I'm impressed.
(or something along those lines)

There's a discussion of the new dice roller in this thread. Basically, you need to click the Dice rolls tab below the post to roll the dice. Then the dice roll will appear there, and you can click the first action by each roll to place it inline in the post.

Sorry to hear it. Do not be licking anyone with symptoms!! In fact, lick no strangers at all for the time being.

Here in Australia, we're pleased to see the far right end of the US press is reporting that we (Australia) have descended into Nazi-esq totalitarian state and federal governments in a bid to keep COVID under control.

No offence to US members, it's not like our press is in any way better.

Re: OOC:

I guess the press can’t think of anything useful to report on like, maybe, the end of the planet as we know it, so they are resorting to making stuff up. Again.
If it helps, I’ve found that singing loudly anything by the BeeGees whilst walking down the street helps against covid.

Hell yeah!!

I still imagine this campaign as a pulp radio series from the 1940s or 50s, with lots of melodramatic over-acting, an enthusiastic narrator, and an over-excited studio orchestra in the background.

("Will our heroes make it to the bottom of the thousand foot stairwell in the ground? What ancient horror lies at its very base? And will Crowley ever be reunited with his beloved pet giant tarantula, Mr Fluffy?"

"Tune in for the next exciting installment, brought to you by Bex Headache Powder, for every headache.")

Once again, not for the first time and hopefully not for the last, ignorance is bliss for Crowley.

Traditionally, in WWII movies, two Germans in uniform will be having an irrelevant conversation about how much they miss the Old Country, shortly before they are whacked by Our Heroes.

Hans: Willie, so you remember the edelweiss in the mountains?

Willie: What I wouldn't give to see them again. Or to sit by the river eating schnitzel (with noodles) and drinking a big stein off beer...

And so on.

In the first deus ex, you had guards having a conversation, saying they just wanted to finish this job as quick as possible and return home.
Even worst: a guard that I had killed had a diary. He had written that he regreted to have sign that job, it was nothing it had been promissed, it was awful. I feel bad.

I finished Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II last night, so I decided to play Deus Ex next. I bought it last weekend on GoG because it was on sale for less than a dollar. I already have at least one physical copy, but this saves me the trouble of digging it out and configuring it to work on my modern computer. I also got the free mod bundle upgrade Deus Ex Revision from GoG for it, which updates the graphics and audio, adds new features, and has various other improvements, so the visuals won't be dated (except in the training level, which is not updated). I can now play it in full 4K.

Mr H, was just trying to remember the double-barrel rules myself for 7th ed.

General consensus on the internet seems to be attack 1 target with both barrels is 2 rolls but no penalty.

Attack 2 different targets then incurs the usual bane dice.

But I can't really find anything specifically about it in the pdf of the rules I have. My rules may be out of date.

I too am having to guess; I’m sure I’ve seen blowpipe stats somewhere but can’t find them. So I’m assuming they are tipped with curare poison but that Jan’s only got three darts prepared for this fight.

This is in some footnote in the Keeper's guide:
Uses per Round: Number of attacks that can be initiated per combat round (does not affect number of times a character may fight back with a melee weapon). Most firearms may fire one bullet without penalty; more bullets up to the maximum (shown by the number in brackets) may be fired, but each shot is taken with a penalty die. Some weapons have burst or full auto capability, when using this, use the automatic fire rules. For shotguns firing twice at the same target, no penalty is taken for the second shot, but if the second shot targets a different opponent, that shot is made with a penalty.

Do we ever recover any luck after scenarios? Also, do we roll for our skills used to see if we level up at all at the end of the scenario?

Yes, you recover all the luck and roll the skills. I'm still counting those.

Just making sure you are going away from Pulp Cthulhu book on luck as on page 62 it says you roll luck like skills and if you fail (roll over your luck) you get 2d10 + 10 and if you roll under luck you roll 1d10 + 5 for luck recovery.

Yes, I decide that you recover all the luck after the scenario but don't increase. Let's face it, in a campaign like this, certain characters could finish with more than100 points of luck.

Re: OOC:

Aine you need to make rolls to the following skills:
Spott hiden
Rifle
First aid
Natural world
Blowpipe

To everyone:
You can increase 1 point in 1 characteristic (STR, CON, SIZ, DEX, APP, INT, POW, EDU) and eventually move, HP, Magic points, damage bonus (if your main characteristic increased) but you cannot change or increase the derived stats like luck or san.
OR:
You can increase 6 points in any skill (even if you have 0).

Re: OOC:

by Mephistophilis
Presumably not in Cthulhu Mythos or any of the Mythos languages?

Re: OOC:

Posted: Tue Jun 21, 2022 2:57 am
by Mr. Handy
Do you mean we get to increase a characteristic by 1 point or 5? 1 point isn't that much with 7th edition stats. I'm thinking of boosting my DEX even higher.

Re: OOC:

Posted: Tue Jun 21, 2022 9:16 am

I was thinking in the good old scale of 1-20. You are right, it is 5.

No mythos, but you can increase nahacal or Hiperborian.

Re: OOC:

Posted: Tue Jun 21, 2022 11:22 am

I think Crowley is just going to have to raise his Handgun skill to 94%.

That seems suitably Pulp.

Re: OOC:

Posted: Wed Jun 22, 2022 3:39 am
by Mr. Handy
I'll take the 5 points of DEX then. That also raises my base Dodge skill, giving me a couple of extra points there.

Do we get extra occupational skill points for raising a stat on which they are based?

Does raising a skill to 90% or higher still give you +2D6 Sanity, like it did in 6th edition?

Re: OOC:

Posted: Wed Jun 22, 2022 6:01 pm
by Starspawn338
I also will be raising my Dex by 5 which raises my Dodge by 3

Dice rolls

Rifle: 77 increase: 5 ........ 75
First aid: 76 increase: 5 ........45
Natural world: 26 increase: 0......70
Blowpipe: 67 increase: 4........40
I think it makes sense for Jan to increase her otherworldly knowledge as this has been her first experience of it and she hungers for more. As I can’t take Mythos, could I put 6 points into occult, taking it to 16?

In my other game (a traveller game) one of the players just leaved and I wanted to ask if just by chance any of you is interested to play? You can play one of the existing characters or a new one.

For those not already in, it's really good fun! Very old school: K-man is using the original rules and there's something endearing about them.

Cheers,

Snapper

PS There's a nice program that will generate a character for you in no time, no need to understand too much about the rules.

PPS I have a PDF of the original (1970s) rules books if anyone wants. Legitimately. Lemme know.

Traveller was always one of those games I wanted to play but never did back in the day (along with Twilight 2000 and FASERIP). I'd be up for it but know nothing about Traveller in terms of lore or rules. Where could I get the rules to classic Traveller, are we looking 70s or 80s rules?

ETA: $3 for the facsimile edition on DTRPG seem doable!

Also, I think the conversation has become a bit confused. Crowley and Jan are talking to Capt Lancaster, British Army, who doesn't know anything about the bomb and will not have heard what Shapiro said.

Various party members have been talking to Shapiro, who is not connected to the British military but, on the other hand, is responsible for the bomb.

Shapiro knows about the bomb and the quarantine.

Sorry to hear that! It does explain the unusual silence.

Don't rush the recovery, drink lots of fluids, take painkillers for the headaches and temperatures, that's my highly unqualified advice. Supermarket home delivery and uber eats are good things. And also, COVID sucks!

I've never played in any of the classic CoC adventures. It's all been one shots or short adventures strung together until we're all insane.

Well, since you managed to save everyone, you get 1d4 of sanity, as long as you don't more sanity than you started the scenario.

Crowley had lost no sanity. He continues to live on the perpetual brink of insanity and survive using his Resilient skill.

I'm sure he's pretty unstable day to day though.

Jan rolls a 4. Which brings her up to a whopping 39. She may need to retire and take up bonsai-ing and consultancy work.

I’ve got a Pulp Cthulhu question someone might be able to answer. How do you convert CofC monster hit points to Pulp Cthulhu, or do they stay the same? It’s just my gun-toting group are mowing down everything I sling at them.

Normally the monster hit points stay the same. However for major NPC's and monsters encounters that you want to be more "dangerous", I would recommend that you double the hit points. That would slow the PC killing spree down a bit.

Crowley also made successful History and Language - Naacal rolls. History to know stuff about Borneo, Naacal to flirt with the snakey lady / future Mrs Crowley.

Going back over my character's actions, it looks like I had an electrical repair to repair the panels in the outpost where we found the fake Shapiro.

This scenario started off well with the plane attack etc, but then it seemed like it slowed down in pace. Certainly compared to the other Pulp Cthulhu scenarios we've played. Maybe it's just me? I do enjoy the fast pace of Pulp Cthulhu on the whole though.

Also, perhaps it will all become clearer later, but I don't think I (or Crowley) had a clue what's going on.

(BTW, Do not apologise for your English, you're running this in a second language which is more than I could do, and it's all perfectly easy to understand.)

It's certainly starting to get a bit more confusing - Serpent People factions - weapons of mass destruction - ghouls and dhols - but I'm guessing we're meant to feel overwhelmed at this point.

I understand perfectly. This seemed to me one of the weakest scenario: the beggining is frantic, but latter there are only descriptions and what I can call as random encounters. I tried to make a coherent action with the rescue, but it didn't work very well.
About the factions, yes, it is supposed to be confused for now. Latter you will understand better the politics of the serpent people and make your own decisions.

It was a blast. Thank you! I also like the high action parts. Are we having a break (and going to Antartica) or are we rattling on with the Two headed Serpent?

Jan's R&R:
Spot hidden improve: 3
First aid no improve
Natural world no improve
Listen improve: 5
Rifle no improve
Psychology improve: 5
Dreamland d6+1: 5

Jan only has 35 sanity left. She probably ought to retire. Do we get any SAN reward for the Borneo scenario?

We got it on the previous page. You got 4 Sanity back. I'm in even worse shape, Sanity-wise, but I also got 4.

Thanks, chaps. I’m running the same campaign around the table so now I know all the mysteries. Makes it a bit tricky to play a character.

OK, just throwing this out there as a question:

This is Pulp Cthulhu. The only CoC where direct action is normally a good option. Are we unnecessarily complicating matters?

At the moment, we seem to have slowed down to a snail's pace. I'm all for the attempts to divine what our current employer is up to, but would it be simpler to take the next case offered and see what else we learn as we go?

Just asking.
