IC - 3 - Engineering - Kiara and Sam

Moses helps Sam adjust the radio to the correct frequency. They can hear various back and forth discussions about optimising flow rates and checking valves. It looks like the person with the red stripes is some kind of supervisor but it doesn't seem to be Arnold White, not least because she's a woman. There are about eight people working the pump but none of them is clearly White.

One of the Dragonfly airborne surface probes passes them overhead and continues back towards the colony.

"Hi, I'm Samantha Golightly," says Sam. "We were told we could find Arnold White here."

[Mephistophilis]

The woman with the red stripes looks up and starts walking back towards Sam. Her voice comes over the radio, friendly but curious, 'Hello there, I'm Lucy Mendez, supervisor on Pumping Station 1 today. So, you're looking for Arnie White? And who exactly would you be?'

Moses splutters something about being from Richter Dynamics, investigating the drop in methane production.

Mendez laughs, long and loud, 'You've come a long way for a bit of methane. I'm afraid he's not here on the platform, he's gone to repair a stretch of piping. CENTRAL, where is Chief White now?'

Over the radio the three investigators hear the synthetic sound of CENTRAL, 'Hello Mining Supervisor Mendez. Chief Engineer White is fifty metres East South East from your current location.' Mendez gestures back towards the colony.

'Chief, Chief are you reading me, over?' There's no answer. 'Must not have his radio on, or there's some interference.'

Moses looks into the orange haze, 'I don't think I can see him out there and I'm not getting off the platform. We can wait here for him. Do you realise how dangerous it is?'

Kiara squints, but sees nothing out of the ordinary.

"I definitely see him," says Sam.

In the distance Sam can just about make out what seems to be a figure in a surface suit. He is kneeling or maybe even lying down beside one of the large metal pipelines that stretch back from the pumping station to Barnard's Rest.

[Mr. Handy]

"Looks like he's kneeling or lying down beside a pipeline," says Sam, pointing. "He may need help. What if his suit has a breach? We should get over there!"

“It’s certainly odd that he’s not answering the comms. C’mon, let’s go and help!”

Kiara lumbers after Sam as fast as she can in her suit.

[Mephistophilis]

Sam and Kiara step off the metal walkway onto the soft, spongy methane snow. Their weighted boots help to keep them on the ground but the low gravity means they take great awkward strides into the orange fog tracking alongside the methane pipeline.

Sam can just about make out the suited figure in the distance, still not moving.

As the unfamiliar gravity makes itself felt, Kiara struggles to make headway.

Sam also finds it slow going.

The surface of Titan is difficult to walk on. While the methane snow is spongy and forgiving underfoot the surface suits are bulky and the atmospheric pressure is greater than Earth standard, making it feel a bit like walking through water. Paradoxically very little gravity affects the rest of the suit so only the weighted boots are drawn down to the ground, further emphasising the odd sensation of being under water and feeling very ungainly trying to make progress across the surface. It isn't long before both Sam and Kiara find themselves taking larger and larger steps above the surface, beginning to lose control of their trajectory.

As Kiara bounds higher and higher, luck is most definitely on her side.

Sam loses her balance and goes flying.

As Sam loses her balance she flails her arms wildly and launches horizontally across the red surface, crashing hard into the metal pipeline running alongside. She strikes it awkwardly and tumbles towards the prone figure ahead.

Sam,Roll 1d8 damage (remember you have 4pts of armour to subtract). If you take more than 1pt of damage roll Luck to see if it affects the suit

Fortunately, Sam's suit protects her from the impact, and it does not appear to have been breached.

Sam skids to a halt in the orange methane snow. Kiara bounds up behind her and helps her to her feet. After a quick inspection it seems the only damage is to her ego. Moses's voice crackles over the radio anxiously, 'What's going on, do you need help?'.

Now they're close to the figure of Chief White it is clear he's not moving. Rather than crouching down in the snow he's lying on his back. His face is not visible through the visor which is fogged up.

Having somehow managed to keep a stable gait, Kiara bounds over to Sam and the prone form of Chief White.

“Hey Chief... Are you okay?”

She reaches out to wipe his visor.

[Mephistophilis]

The Chief doesn't answer. Kiara can't wipe his visor because the fogging is on the inside.
