Character Discussion

You are gathered together in the offices of Professor N.E. Brown, Den of the College of Sciences at Miskatonic University, in Arkham Mass. It is Friday evening, March 21, 1919, a cold and blustery day. There is a cheerful fire in the grate. The offices are panelled in oak, and appointed with velvet curtains, brass lamps, overflowing bookcases, a massive desk and table – both littered with text books and papers – and an assortment of comfortable easy chairs. Professor Brown studies you all over the top of his horn rimmed glasses.
“Gentlemen” he begins, “I have received a request to send a team of academics to investigate a strange crystal cavern discovered recently at the bottom of a mine shaft on the property of the Bendix Coal Co, Gibbsville, Pa. The company, or the parent company at least, concerned has been a generous benefactor to the University in the past, so the University is only to pleased to investigate this cavern”.
He pauses and produces a well used pipe which he proceeds to fill with tobacco, “Oh and a collection of bones has been found within this cavern....”
(Further information will be available when the game starts)

This adventure requires five investigators to comprise the team that is being sent. The investigators may represent any academic discipline which you may see fits the possible situation.
Personal Equiptment must not exceed 100lbs per person and personal fire arms are restricted to one pistol or rifle per player.
Please use this section to discuss and create your character. Finished characters will then be posted elsewhere.
I Presume everyone is okay with 7th ed charater creation, if not shout.

Geology seems to be a suitable area. I'd like my character to be a field researcher in that discipline.

What else do we need? We don't know if the bones are human - physical anthropology/archeology or animal - biology. We might benefit from an engineer. A physicist could play a role. Anything else?

Chemistry! It's always good to have a chemist on the firm.

Are we going to roll characters in thread or offline? Standard random stats?

I'm minded to be an engineer. I expect to be looked down on by the pure scientists.

Could I have a sport-billy anthropologist? Irritatingly energetic, canoes up the Limpopo to see a new Pygmy tribe, kind of chap. Just back from an ascent of the Matterhorn, Europe.

I had also been thinking of a geologist or mechanical engineer, but since those are taken, I could play a chemist.

Can I take Demolitions for my engineer? I'm thinking it is something he would have picked up in his war service.

And are we using the transferable skill benefits optional rules?

Yes I think having Demolitions linked to Egineer is okay

I see nothing wrong with using the Transferable skill benefits option

Appearance and personality
Arthur Robinson is a tall dark man who looks rather drawn and ungainly. In his suit he pulls at the collar and appears uncomfortable. He is quiet, almost taciturn. When he must he speaks in a clipped English accent.

He has rejected the traditional religious and political beliefs of his particular class but now has a burning passion for the transformative promise of technology and he harbours the dream of one day inventing something of real significance for human benefit.

Background
Brought up in a reasonably well off provincial English family he was a sickly and lonely child who entertained himself building models and mechanical contraptions. When his health finally recovered he went to King's College London to study engineering and was invited to continue to postgraduate studies. With the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted in the Royal Engineers and served throughout the war including some involvement in early tests of the newly developed tanks. After the war he returnd to academic engineering but quickly found the conservative atmosphere in English academia stifling and took up the offer of a lectureship in the Miskatonic University's newly founded department of engineering where he felt his passion for innovation might be better received.

Aine. In 7th edn SAN just sets starting sanity (max is 99-cthulhu mythos). Hand to hand skills are now Fighting (Brawl) (25% base) which includes using clubs and knives. There's no wrestling. Firearms are now Handgun (20%) and Rifle/Shotgun (25%). If you hit 50% in a fighting or firearm subspecialty you get a 10% bonus to other subspecialty scores (this is an optional rule we're using). So if you had Handgun 50% you go to Rifle/Shotgun 35% without spending points.

Appearance & Personality:

Neville is the second son of a middle class Denver family. He became interested in geology through exploring the Rocky Mountains on family trips, and decided to pursue his interest occupationally, beginning by studying at Miskatonic University. After graduating, he found employment in the oil industry and has spent time accumulating a great deal of experience in investigating potential fields in the US and further afield, in particular the Arabian Peninsula. This has also enabled him with a knowledge of the Arabian tribes and their nomadic lifestyles, as well as a command of their language. Now he is back in the US, and thinking of changing course and using his knowledge to pursue a career in academia. He continually seeks to expand his understanding of the world.
As a rule he is generally held in regard by peers and colleagues, although considered a little aloof. He is unmarried and appears to be quite satisfied with his current situation, despite his advancing years. This is not a man who will settle down, but is continually seeking out new challenges, be they in the field or behind a desk.

Your choice how to apply the rolls, and yes they are awful. What the hell is a "mulligan"? Can't find it

aine - the free quick start rules can be downloaded here https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/12 ... h=74_29331

Yes, basically I'd like to throw out the entire set of rolls and roll them all again.

Those aren't even the worst rolls I've ever had. Once I got a total of 75 stat points for all eight stats (for a 6th edition character), which included two 4s and an 8.

Thank you. The term "mulligan" is often used in card games. The Arkham Horror LCG uses it, where if you don't like your initial hand of five cards, you can get rid of all of them and redraw, but only once.

My Luck score is 30, as I forgot to multiply by five in the dice tags. Still better than last time. These results are much nicer, especially with that 18. I'll have to rearrange my stats and finish creating my character when I have time, probably tomorrow.

Sorry, everyone. I’d completely forgotten about this by the time I got back from my holiday and then got wrapped up in the holiday season (which can be a busy & stressful time, for reasons I won’t go into here :| ).

Are you still planning to run this or has my absense de-railed things?

I never finished creating my character either, but I think it's because Priest hasn't logged in for over a month that there's been no progress. I didn't have time to create my character at the time, and with time still tight, I've decided to wait and not finish until Priest returns and lets us know if the game is still going to happen.
