Track 10: Sympathy for the Devil

After a brief stay at a Hawaiian hospital known for discretion -- it's often used by Five-Oh agents injured in the line of duty -- Tony is back in shape. A few more days relaxing on the beach isn't unwelcome either.

After some time spent in rest and relaxation goes by, word comes down, through secure channels ("open channel D" is the key phrase, to be specific) that the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement has granted exclusive use of the captured airship to the adventurers. They will, of course, deny any connection to it through their front as a charitable organization. ("Just keep us informed of any THRUSH activities, via this channel.") The adventurers will be allowed to maintain the vessel at whatever base they like, and name it whatever they please.

All seems quiet for a while, as the adventurers ready themselves to face even greater challenges than before.
Spoiler:
Might as well go up a level. Everybody has a total of 18 Hit Points, + 2 Damage on successful attacks (if I don't forget about it), a new Asset without a new Affliction, + 1 to any Basic Characteristic, Liz a new Spell/Psychic Power. Then I'll try to think of something really nasty to throw at you.

OOC,Going for +1 Wisdom, and the Asset Fast Learner, which seems like a good knock-on from her memory power. BTW, when you rolled up Zara's powers, you said it was perfect memory and immunity to most diseases. Would she know she has the latter?
How much room is there is the airship's cabin?

Zara makes some portraits of the bad guys who got away, on the theory that they might prove useful later if they show up again.. And reads the airship's flight manual, if there is one. Otherwise she spends Tony's recuperation time drawing pictures of the island and some of the wolf-men.

Liz spends a lot of time on the beach as well, pleased to get some swimming in without the danger of aquatic nasties taking a bite out of her. No doubt Tony is pleased to watch her doing it.
OOC,I'll have to do my character enhancements over the weekend, when I should have time. Do I get the Spell/Psychic Power instead of an Asset, or in addition to it?

I suppose she might begin to suspect it when she never gets colds and such, no matter how often she gets exposed to such things.

Pretty luxurious, I would think; plenty of room to stretch out, have personal effects, etc.

During all this sketching, Zara feels a strange compulsion to draw a landscape consisting of a bay into which a glacier is breaking off, forming icebergs. She gets the feeling that some unknown, unseen entity is trying to tell her something, but whether it's an invitation or a warning is difficult to tell.

Liz comes in to shore on a surfboard, having also decided to try her hand at surfing, and takes a look at the sketch. "Just when I was getting used to the tropics," she says. "It should be interesting. But is it the Arctic or the Antarctic? Polar bears or penguins?"
OOC,Thanks. Yes, they are powerful classes, which is probably why they have lower HP. I think I only got the Ritual and not the Asset for level 2. I only have my starting four Assets.

Relaxed and fortified from his sojourn, a tanned, toned and, most importantly, coiffured and tailored Tony saunters over to inspect Zara's latest piece.

"Ah, and I was so enjoying the tropical view," he says, winking at Liz. "I daresay we'll discover what gives soon enough, but in the meantime I'll arrange for my people to buy some cold weather gear."

When given the opportunity, Tony looks at the drawing with some puzzlement.

Liz is more than happy to buy cold-weather clothing and gear for both Zara and herself. It should be relatively affordable if it can be found at all, as there's little need for it in Hawaii. She picks out an elegant white fur parka with a hood.

Playing a hunch, Tony is able to determine from his contacts that there was an "incident" at the Arctic weather station known as Ice Station Zebra. Although designated as "closed," the incident is still classified as Top Secret, so few details are available. What is known is that the tiny weather station, located on drifting ice, has failed to supply the normal daily radio reports from its small rotating crew of meteorologists for some time. Given the movement of the ice, as well as recent radio silence, it is impossible to determine its exact current location.

An old but fairly accurate map of the Arctic ice, found among the many reference materials aboard the airship, may provide a clue.

Image

Of most importance is the fact that dark blue indicates permanent ice, and light blue drifting ice, including ISZ's areas of operation. Given its last known location, as well as the permanent ice and land masses that limit its movements, it seems likely that it is now located somewhere between the southern tip of Greenland and the waters above Scandinavia, north of the tiny bit of land known as Bear Island.

Tony also orders plenty of polar gear, including a thick parka coat, sleds, ropes and whatever this years stylish polar explorer is using.

“Let’s make sure this new vehicle of ours is able to withstand, and indeed function in, sub-zero temperatures, hm?” he suggests, whilst poring over the map, focusing between Svalbard and Bear Island.

Zara's thin frame isn't suited to the cold, and she picks the warmest-looking polar/mountain gear she can find, regardless of style.

"For sure," she says to Tony's suggestion. "That doesn't look like a good place to get stranded."

Liz has also bought a pair of matching fur-lined boots to go with her parka. "We could use a sled and a dog team to pull it," she says, studying the map. "Plenty of food and water as well for them and for us. We can land somewhere in the Arctic on the way and hire them there, as well as one or more guides."

After collecting a good supply of cold weather gear, and checking the airship for polar safety -- the crew will be fine, if a little chilly -- the investigators, having shown interest in the regions north of Norway, head for that remote part of the world, well above the Arctic Circle. (It's fortunate that, after the long rest in the tropics, it's now summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Twenty-four hours of night would be difficult to handle, not to mention the increased cold.)

A partially torn map of the area -- that's a close look at Bear Island in the lower left corner, a chunk of Greenland in the upper left corner, and Russia in the lower right corner -- reveals a tense geopolitical situation. Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land are Soviet territory. While Svalbard is under Norwegian administration, many of its few inhabitants -- miners and the like -- are Soviet citizens.

The airship glides over the Barents Sea, as the investigators consider a good place to land, and the best way to seek out the current location of Ice Station Zebra.

“I think it’s prudent to radio both the Norwegian and Soviet authorities that our ‘exploration vehicle’ is in the vicinity; we don’t want to cause an international incident,” suggests Tony.

“Then circle around Bear Island and look for a suitable landing spot?”

After making landfall near Tromsø, a populous city with an airport only a few years old, the investigators make discreet inquiries about visiting Bear Island; no doubt they are thought to be wealthy eccentrics. The most common reply is "No one goes there." It soon becomes clear that the tiny island's only industry, a coal mine, has been closed for about forty years. There is a Norwegian meteorological station at the northernmost tip of the isle. The southern part is mountainous. The whole place is almost always shrouded in mist, even during the summer. There are a large number of small lakes on the flatter central and northern parts of the island. Seabirds are common.

After much discouragement, the party eventually locates a fellow, Jan Hansen by name, who is willing to act as a guide.

"Your balloon not land Bjørnøya," he explains, using the Norwegian name for the island. "Too big, land too rough. Harbor at north. I take, have good boat." He proudly points out a small but sturdy looking craft, obviously designed for icy waters. "Astrid. She strong. Pay good, I guide good. Why you go?"

Shrugging at having his question unanswered, Jan replies "Russians." He spits on the ground. "I not take them. Can go Hell."

Boarding the Astrid, the investigators find an ample supply of kokekaffe to warm the body and akevitt to warm the spirit. The boat moves at a slow and steady pace, moving through the ever-present mist like someone finding the way through an impenetrable fog. The cries of seabirds are often heard over the noise of the engine. Once in a while, the mist clears enough to witness the towering, jagged cliffs that rise from the frigid water. Many of them are so heavily populated with birds that the rock can hardly be seen. The vessel passes by many sea tunnels, into which a small raft might be able to carry a few people to explore their mysteries.

At last, the boat reaches the harbor (if it can be called that, being merely a slightly larger than usual indentation into the stony coast.) As the Astrid's engine grows silent, leaving only the shrieks of countless birds filling the air, Jan secures the boat and steps onto less-than-dry land. The investigators follow. The island's meteorological station is visible a short distance away. There are no trees, only low-lying plant life adding a touch of green.

"Where go, Mister and Ladies? Can hike to pretty lakes, get nice view."

The meteorological station is a simple but sturdy structure, constructed of wooden planks covered with heavily weathered red paint. A tall radio antenna sticks up from the roof. There are a few small windows of thick glass, covered with frost. The single door is made of tarnished metal, and is dented in several places. Nearby is an aluminum pole bearing several of those humorous signs that people put up in isolated locations, telling you how far it is to various places around the globe. (For example, Waikiki Beach 9363 KM.)

Jan tries the door, which proves to be locked. He then knocks, but there is no answer.

"Not home?"

The place is a shambles. Electronic equipment lies in pieces on the floor, laboratory apparatus is scattered everywhere, books and sheets of paper litter the room. There's a figure seated at a table, upon which sits a large radio transmitter. The person is completely wrapped up in heavy clothing and is facing away from the window, so nothing can be seen of his or her face. The figure does not move in response to further knocking.

Liz is able to determine that somebody left a single set of tracks, heading south. (There is hardly any other way to go, except for a bit to the east and west.) The exact shape of the prints is not evident, given the slushy, wet conditions; they're more like vaguely foot-shaped depressions. About all that can be told, judging from their size, depth, and the distance between them, is that the person who left them behind was large, heavy, and was running with long strides.

As expected, inside the research station there is utter chaos. Books, journals, loose papers are scattered all over the floor. Equipment is smashed; bits of metal and glass lie everywhere.

Jan rushes immediately to what remains of the radio transmitter. It is, of course, beyond repair.

Approaching the unmoving figure at the table seems like an unpleasant chore, but it must be done. It may not be very surprising to discover that the person is no longer living. The corpse is several days old, it seems, completely desiccated, as if left in a desert for an extended period of time. Jan does not recognize who it is, but that may be due to the condition of the body. Given its condition, as well as heavy clothing, it's not even certain if it's a man or a woman.

Close examination of the dead person's clothing reveals that all the many pockets of shirt, jacket, coat, and trousers have been turned out, and are empty, as if somebody rifled through them in a hurry. During this procedure, bits of the body crumble away, like pieces of bark falling off a dead tree branch. The cause of death is not immediately obvious.

The few firearms -- which are probably only meant for protection against the rare appearance of a polar bear; uncommon, despite the island's name -- are still securely locked away in a gun cabinet, which appears to have not been disturbed.

The area that serves as a simple kitchen and dining area has been completely ransacked, with several packages of food torn open, their contents mostly missing, although there is quite a bit of stuff spilled on the floor as well.

Jan explains that the station normally has two scientists in residence, on a rotating basis. There is no evidence of any clothing belonging to a second person anywhere around, just what the dead one is wearing.

Notably, the station's plumbing -- fresh water supplied from a simple tank on the roof, which collects rain and snow to be filtered and purified -- has been completely wrecked, pipes torn apart and thrown everywhere. Despite this, there are no pools of water of any appreciable size on the floor.

Thinking with remarkable insight and clarity, despite -- or perhaps because of -- the disturbing situation, Liz is able to put two and two together from scattered hints. The smashed remnants of a fully equipped biological research laboratory; journals of microbiology with certain articles heavily annotated in red ink; in a dark, nearly hidden corner, the corpses of white rats with swollen heads and swollen bodies. It is possible to deduce that some sort of biological experimentation involving inoculating animals with micro-organisms was going on here, although it is clearly not part of the station's official purpose.

The search is interrupted by the familiar sound of a boat's engine. Running to one of the windows, Jan looks in the direction of the noise.

"They steal Astrid!"

The investigators find two men standing on shore, both holding peculiar firearms that resemble M1 carbines, modified with large infrared projectors. There is a boat, similar to the Astrid, at anchor. The sound of Astrid's engine indicates that there must be at least one other person aboard her, getting ready to launch her. Seeing the others approach, the two guards don't waste any words, but immediately open fire. The weapons make a peculiar, bird-like chirping noise when first activated, and the infrared projectors glow with an eerie pale red light.

Zara presses a hand against her wound, not really up to doing much else. She pulls out the gun she acquired on the island and shakily aims it, but with Jan (and prsumably Liz) between her and the men she's reluctant to take a shot.

The rolling of the boat causes Tony to just barely tap the fellow on the noggin, drawing his attention rather than truly inflicting any harm. Startled, he pulls away from the controls and fumbles with the deep pocket of his jumpsuit (dull green in color, with an image of a black bird on the shoulder patch), obviously trying to find something.

Having a better shot at the fellow this time, Tony gives him a hard blow on the head. The man sways on his feet in an unsteady manner, but remains standing. The object he pulls out of his jumpsuit pocket doesn't seem to be a weapon of any normal kind. Rather, it's a small black box with a red button on it that he pushes firmly. The distant sound of a loud engine somewhere above suggests a possible explanation.

Gaining much more confidence in her ability to handle firearms, Zara strikes the gunman in the throat, sending a jet of blood streaming out as he falls to the ground. His companion raises the anchor and heads out to sea, as the roaring sound of an engine fills the foggy air. As the boat heads for open water, a large helicopter appears out of the mist and hovers overhead. From a loudspeaker, hardly audible over the noise of the engine, comes a warning.

"Leave the boat and step away from the shore. It will be destroyed in thirty seconds."

As a means of demonstration, a rocket flies out of the helicopter and hits one of the many rocky outcroppings on the island, blasting it into bits.

"Cannot tell where big one went," he says, after returning to join the others. "Where you think?"

He explains that the northern half of the island, where they are now, is at a lower elevation than the southern half. Journeying in any direction other than due south or southeast, they would remain on the lowlands until, reaching the sea. The path to the southern tip of the island is longer but rises less steeply. The path to the southeast is shorter but steeper, and it ends at the highest point of the island. Whichever way they decide to go, they will pass many lakes.

A topographic map retrieved from Astrid confirms this. (The tiny star at the top marks the meteorological station.)

Those tracks did seem to be leading due south, so that would seem to be as good a direction as any to travel.

The hike begins easily enough, and is quite scenic, with crystal clear lakes, patches of moss, and even an occasional Arctic fox spotted at a distance, wearing its pale brown summer coat. After a while, the land starts to slope up slightly. The walk doesn't turn into much of a climb until near the southern end of the island. Pausing for a well-deserved rest, as well as some water and provisions, the adventurers listen to Jan point out four major peaks that lie ahead.

Slightly to the right, Alfredfjellet (420 meters); to the left, and a little south of the other, Antarcticfjellet (a double peak, 360 meters on the right and 337 meters on the left.) Why the latter is named "Antarctic Peak" instead of "Arctic Peak" is something of a mystery. Perhaps it was a joke.

In any case, beyond Alfredfjellet to the south is Hambergfjellet (440 meters.) At the very tip of the island Fuglefjellet stands at 411 meters. From these last two peaks one can see an inlet to the west known as Hornvika. Just beyond the southern tip are tiny islets called Stappen.

To the east of the twin peaks of Antarcticfjellet is a bay called Serhamna, something of a natural harbor, as the eastern side is protected, to some degree, from the raging of the Barents Sea by an arm of land known as Kapp Heer on the northern side, and an islet called Makeholmen just to the south of it.

There is much to consider, as the adventurers catch their breath (and, most likely, step away briefly from the others to take care of bodily needs.) A hike to Alfredfjellet would be rather short, but steep. Hambergfjellet is a little further, and quite steep. It offers the best view of Hornvika. All the way to Fuglefjellet is even longer, but not so steep, and offers the best view of Stappen. A trip through the double peaks of Antarcticfjellet and beyond would be quite long, not very steep, but an up and down trip. The land slopes down to the east from there, so it would be possible to reach Serhamna on foot. (The sea is not nearly so accessible from the other peaks, as they drop suddenly down as sea cliffs.)

The party prepares for a fairly long hike, Jan in the lead to scout out the easiest paths up and down the double peaks. With the increase in elevation, the temperature drops. In addition to that, climbing higher reduces the protection from the nearly constant wind. The two effects create quite a wind chill factor, so it's a challenge to keep warm.
Spoiler:
Let's have some CON rolls. Jan = 9, Liz = 13, Zara = 8, Tony = 9. off line die rolls: 4d20 = 19, 9, 10, 2
By the time they reach the top of the first peak, Jan and Zara both seem to be more affected by the cold than the others, suffering a little from frostbite.
Spoiler:
reduce CON and DEX by 1 until you're off the island. Also, special roll for Zara, who has the Affliction Slow/Tires Easily. off line die roll 1 d20 (with CON now 7): 19
In particular, Zara seems to be slowing down quite a bit, and needs some time to rest.

"Rain comes," Jan notes, scanning the thickening mist. "We rest."

After descending from the first peak, the party finds shelter under a rock shelf. The rain begins, lashed by the wind into an appreciable downpour. It would seem best to pass the night here, waiting for the weather to improve. Huddled together in the shelter for warmth, sharing Jan's supply of chocolate for energy, the adventurers spend a pretty miserable night.

The next day, the rain stops. The party scales the second peak, with perhaps less enthusiasm than the first.
Spoiler:
Same die rolls as before, with the reduced CONs: off line 4d20: 1,20, 14, 5
Jan doesn't suffer any more ill effects, while Tony remains as hale and hearty as can be expected. Liz gets her chance to experience mild frostbite, while poor Zara gets ever worse than before.
Spoiler:
CON and DEX down by 1 as before
It's something of a relief when the landscape slopes down again, and the party is able to reach the shore of Serhamna by midday. The unpleasant trip may have been worth while, it seems, as there is a sort of dome-shaped tower in the middle of the harbor, which seems to have its foundation well below the water. Beyond that, there's some kind of building on Makeholmen, the islet of moderate size that just barely fails to meet up with the finger of mainland known as Kapp Heer.

"Never seen that," Jan remarks. After watching for a while, some kind of vessel is seen leaving from Makeholmen and sailing in a southwesterly direction, apparently towards the tip of Bear Island rather than the open sea.

"Might cross water from Kapp Heer to Makeholmen," Jan says. "Not wide, but need way to cross. Or could go south, walk along coast to end of island. Pretty long hike. Not have to climb, but some places must walk along cliff."

Jan chuckles, rather grimly, at this suggestion. Liz has apparently mistaken some rock formations, seen in the shadows, for small trees.

"No trees on Bjørnøya," he explains, using the Norwegian name for the island. "Moss, grass, yes. Trees, no. Maybe have idea."

The party walks to the end of the cape. The islet can be seen across the water, tantalizingly close.

The others watch him gather the longest, toughest strands of grass he can find. He spends quite a bit of time cutting these with his knife and weaving them together, until he has something like a big, rough carpet.
Spoiler:
Let's give him Dex 9 + 3 for Boatbuilding Skill = 12 to see if this works at all. die roll 1d20: 7
The bizarre and, frankly, not very reassuring craft proves to be sea worthy enough to carry one passenger at a time across the very narrow strait between the cape and the islet. With a clever system of ropes, it can then be hauled back for the next person. This all takes a lot of time, and everybody gets pretty wet, so by the time everybody is across, it's dark again.

During the brief voyage, the adventurers note that the domed structure in the harbor, seen from a new angle and at a nearer distance, seems to consist of concrete and steel, with several pipes leading up from the water to the interior. Huddled around a small campfire, the flickering light reveals, at a moderate distance, what looks like a few Quonset huts in the middle of the islet, surrounded by barbed wire. An occasional dog bark is heard.

Man and dog walk toward the center of the fenced compound.

Spoiler:
Dex rolls for sneaking up to the fence. Jan = 9, but I'll throw in + 1 for Sneak since he was in the Resistance = 10, Liz = 12, Zara = 13, Tony = 14 + 1 for Sneak = 15. 4d20 = 14, 4, 7, 15. To make it interesting, I'll call the last one a borderline success, with consequences.
As the four intruders approach the barbed wire fence as quietly as possible, they learn that Diablo and his master were not the only guards on duty. Loud, angry barking is followed by a man and a large German shepherd confronting the figure of Jan, barely visible in the misty moonlight. The Norwegian raises his arms in the universal gesture of surrender. The man points a pistol at him.

"Step to your right, nice and easy, buddy. I'd hate to sic Princess on you. She can be awfully mean. You and me are gonna have a little talk with the boss."

Jan plays for time by pleading in Norwegian, feigning ignorance of English. The guard gestures with his pistol until Jan can no longer pretend he doesn't understand his instructions.

This delaying action allows the others to enter the compound through a gate, which the guard opened to allow Jan to be captured. They sneak in undetected, except for the fact that Tony's jacket catches on the barbed wire, leaving a piece of cloth behind. The guard notices this as Jan enters.

"Got some buddies with you, huh? Yeah, we're gonna have a real nice talk, pal."

Princess snarls a bit, but the guard hushes her before she can point out the others, hiding near a small storage building. The guard leads Jan to a large building in the center of the compound.

"You two stay hidden," Tony tells the girls. "If they're expecting another trespasser, I'll give them one. That'll allow you to snoop around unnoticed I hope."

The detective dirties himself up a bit, rubbing snow and mud into his clothes and (horror of horrors) messing up his hair. This achieved, he staggers into the camp.

"Jan you sonofabitch! Where are you?" yells. "Leaving me to get lost while you cosy up to your pals huh?"

Startled, the guard turns around to face Tony, while keeping an eye on Jan. He moves the pistol back and forth, trying to cover both of them, while getting ready to loose Princess at a moment's notice.

"What the hell is all this? You clowns know each other?"

Jan, quick to pick up on Tony's bluff, says "I wish I did not. This one gets himself lost, blames me."

Meanwhile, Liz and Zara make their way to the main building. It appears to have no windows, and only a single door. The jingle of a set of keys on the guard's belt suggests that it is kept locked.

“I get myself lost!?” Tony yells with incredulity.

“Listen pal,” he turns to the guard, seemingly oblivious to the gun and guard dog. “I wanna go hunt polar bears, so I hire this schmuck. ‘Five hundred dollars’ he says, so I say ‘sure, small potatoes, have a thousand.’ But he still manages to beach the goddamn boat on this godforsaken island!”

He pauses, patting his coat.

“Got my wallet in here somewhere... what say you let me in your hut there to get warm and dry? I’ll make it worth your while. What d’you do here anyways? You hunters or science guys?”

He unlocks the door, keeping an eye on the two.

"Now move!"

He gestures with the pistol, following the men into the building and leading them to a small cell, where he locks them in with another key.

"Just take it easy until the boss shows up."

He walks away.

Re: Track 10: Sympathy for the Devil

Scanning the area quickly, it can be seen that the interior layout of the building, from the door, consists of the cell to one side and the direction from which the footsteps are approaching to the other. On both sides, a ninety degree turn leads to unexplored areas. Dashing around the far side of the cell could lead to a hiding place.
Spoiler:
Let's see if everybody is lucky. Jan DEX 9 + 1 for Sneak from Resistance experience = 10; Liz = 12; Zara = 13; Tony = 14 + 1 for Sneak = 15. off line die rolls 4d20: 7,17,19,5. Well, that's interesting.
Perhaps because their brief time in the cell gave them enough of a chance to get used to the place, the two men are able to vanish around the corner silently. The two women are not so fortunate, drawing the attention of whoever is approaching. The footsteps grow more rapid.

"See what's going on," an unseen man says with a light Middle European accent. "I heard someone moving around over there, and I don't think it came from the cell."
Spoiler:
Let's try something else here. Liz Wisdom = 11 + 1 Discover Secrets + 3 Sharp Eyes = 15; Zara Wisdom = 11 + 1 Perception + 3 Good Sense of Direction = 15, just to make things even. 2d20 = 3, 20. Oh, dear, I tried to give you both a good chance.
Driven by desperate circumstances, Liz's senses are heightened to the point where she perceives a carefully hidden trap door on the floor, which she is able to open quickly and drop through to an area of total darkness, closing it behind herself without a sound. Still disoriented from the long hike, Zara doesn't see how her friend got away, and winds up being spotted by those approaching, who turn out to be the two guards, their dogs, and a man in early middle age, dressed in a conservative business suit, pale of hair and complexion, tall and slender.

"Do not move," he commands. "Tell me who you are, who you work for, and how your fellow agents got away."

Remaining absolutely still, Liz can hear the sound of a large volume of water rushing by, somewhere not far away. The noise is hollow, as if the water -- or perhaps some other liquid? -- is contained in some sort of tube or pipe.

Barking orders to the guards, the man leads his guests -- or prisoners? -- through a maze of corridors to an office, which is furnished in simple but comfortable fashion. The guards remain standing by, dogs at their heels. The man directs the two to sit, in a pair of plain metal chairs. Both Zara and Tony feel a tiny tingle as they sit; not strong enough to be unpleasant, but noticeable. The man sits at a large desk. Pressing some kind of control under it, he causes a flat glass panel to rise from the surface of the desk. It tilts toward him, and he observes it carefully.

"You may address me as Lazlo. My family name is beyond the ability of most to pronounce," he adds, with a slight smile. "Now tell me. What do you know of SHRIKE?"

The Supreme Hierarchy for the Removal of Incompetents and the Killing of Enemies is a rogue organization, not sanctioned by our own. Their methods are crude and extreme. Lazlo displays marked interest in Tony's story.

"The symbol you describe is that used by SHRIKE agents. Highly unprofessional, to say the least, and ridiculously melodramatic. Revealing one's identity during a clandestine operation! Mere foolishness. They are fanatics, but very dangerous. Their attack on the meteorological station is typical of their idiotic methods. As far as Ice Station Zebra goes--"

A woman of middle years, wearing a lab coat, comes in the room.

"Excuse me, sir, but there's been a breach in the reactor."

Lazlo stands up, alarmed. "How?"

"We don't know. It's as if something broke right through!"

To the investigators, Lazlo says "If you're really fighting against SHRIKE -- and I know you're telling the truth -- come with me to the dock. You'll see for yourself the kind of damage they can do." Turning to one of the guards, he adds "And find that damned Norwegian! I suspect he's behind all this. The group travels through a labyrinth of corridoes, passing several locked rooms, until reaching a large pair of metal doors. The guards pushes them up, revealing a view of the bay known as Sorhamna, with the large dome in the middle of the water. The peaks known as Antarcticfjellet loom in the background. A small dock holds a speedboat.

With a grunt, Lazlo merely directs Liz to join them in the craft, offering her one of the plastic badges. As the craft approaches the reactor, Lazlo carefully scans the badges of all present. They remain pure white.

"Strange," he muses. "I would have suspected at least a small amount of leakage. Hand me those binoculars," he adds to the guard.

He studies the reactor's dome for quite a while.

"Broken through, then sealed back up again. The scar is hardly detectable, but definitely there. This is most peculiar. We'll have to go inside, I'm afraid. If you're still game, that is," he says to his guests.

"I'm keen to see the inside," says Liz.
"Of course."

Lazlo directs the guard to proceed to the reactor, which has a small dock attached to it at one point, just large enough to tie up the speedboat and allow a few people to disembark. Next to this are nearly invisible lines on the surface of the dome that reveal an entrance. Lazlo orders the guard to remain on the boat with the dog, while he walks up to the door. A pale green beam of light emerges from it as he nears, moving across his face. The door opens silently, like a dilating pupil. Inside, all is darkness, until Lazlo steps inside, when dim white lights reveals the interior, where several radiation suits line the walls. Lazlo selects one and seals himself inside it.

"I'm sure you can find something that will suit you," he says, his voice muffled by the suit. "The breach was made on the opposite side from this entrance," he adds. "There'll be quite a way to go to reach it, assuming we don't run into trouble along the way. First stop, the control room. Fully automated, but the sensors may tell us something."

Once they are suited up, he leads them to a room full of flickering gauges and dials, with no human operators to be seen.

“I suspect we’ll ‘need to know’ very soon...” Tony mutters as he struggles into a suit.

He inspects the control panels but, not being much of a technical whizz, holds little hope of understanding them. As such he looks quizzically at Liz.

"Ah, a facial recognition scanner," says Liz when she sees the green light. "Very advanced." She picks out a radiation suit that fits her and still manages to make it look stylish. When she enters the room of gauges and dials, she studies them with her trained scientist's eyes.

Everything seems to be normal, with all the gauges well within the "green" zone.

"We better continue to the reactor room. Watch your step everyone."

Passing through a set of heavy double doors, the party sees a pool of liquid, lit from within by an eerie bluish glow.

"Cherenkov radiation," Lazlo mutters. "Very pretty."

He inspects the control rods, currently set well down into the liquid.

"All normal. Wait a moment, what's that?" He leans over the pool for a better look.

At that moment, something comes out of the pool with great force, sending the liquid splashing everywhere, making it difficult to see what's going on. The brightness of the blue increases to a dazzling level, and the sound of churning liquid fills the room. While trying to adjust their eyes to the sudden glare, the party is able to make out some kind of massive dark shape near the pool, much larger than a human being.

"I don't know," says Liz, taking out her chalk from one of the pouches where she stores things outside of her radiation suit, "but I don't think it's good." She draws a circle with it and performs the ritual for protection from evil.

Once their eyes can adjust to the intense light, the party can see what appears to be a shapeless blob of brightly glowing tissue, throbbing and shifting and dripping with thick ichor. The massive thing slithers at a languid pace across the floor, leaving a trail of slime behind itself. It nears Lazlo, who stands frozen with shock. With a sudden move similar to an amoeba sending out a pseudopod -- assuming an amoeba were the size of a Volkswagen microbus -- the thing shoots out a tentacle-like appendage in his direction.
Spoiler:
DEX = 15 1d20 = 10; success, even if we count the radiation suit as armor of 2
The thing wraps around Lazlo's body, lifting him from the ground like a child's toy, and squeezing.
Spoiler:
damage from constriction each round = 1d6+8 result= 11
The sound of bones being crushed can be heard, even through the protective suit.
Spoiler:

With a last desperate effort, Lazlo manages to free himself from the thing. He falls to the ground and remains motionless. The pseudo-tentacle moves back and forth as the thing moves toward the others.

Acting on instinct, Tony immediately interposes himself between the monster and the others.

“Quick! See to Lazlo and find out what they’ve been doing here! I’ll try to distract the thing while you work out how to defeat it!”

He waves his arms at the giant blob.

“I say! Yoohoo! Over here!”

Hopefully Tony can dodge the flailing tentacles...

Spoiler:
I'll try to do this according to the game's rather complex Dodge rules. First of all, either your Speed or Dexterity must be at least equal to the attacker's Dexterity, which is 15. Let's see; let's give you +1 for your Danger Bonus to base Dexterity of 14, so you just barely qualify. What "Dodge" does is add 1/2 of the higher of Speed or Dexterity (rounded down) to your Armor, so let's say it's 2 (for the suit) + 7 = 9 added to the attacker's Dexterity roll. (Or Dex down by 9, I suppose.) You can't do anything else while Dodging. Attacker's die roll = 1d20 + 9: 2 + 9 = 11. Oops. Success. Damage = 1d6+8: 3 + 6 = 11 Ouch! Let's see if you can pull yourself out of its grip. STR = 7 + 1 for Danger Bonus = 8 1d20: 12. Sorry.
Maybe the weight of the radiation suit makes it difficult for Tony to avoid the constricting tentacle. In any event, the thing seizes him and squeezes, inflicting serious damage. Struggle as he might, Tony is unable to free himself from the slimy tentacle, as the others look on in horror.
Spoiler:
OK, I'm going to really offer you two very bad choices here. You can remain trapped, get more damage, then try to escape by Strength again, or teleport out -- but, since the radiation suit is heavy, it won't come with you, which could cause serious problems.

Once again Tony’s rash action has landed him in big trouble.

Her forehead shining with sweat from the battle of wills between herself and the creature, Liz is finally forced to withdraw. It seems that the being's stubborn desire to remain in this plane of existence has overcome her best attempts to defeat it.

Perhaps a joint sigh of relief will escape from the investigators, as the thing shuffles away from then, sliding along the floor to the other side of the reactor pool. And perhaps that sigh will be cut off when they observe the creature smashing its single tentacle against the walls of the containment chamber, with reverberating booms that suggest that the structure will not long remain stable.

Meanwhile, Tony notices that his badge has changed from white to yellow.

Back in the control room, the investigators are faced with a dizzying array of switches, gauges, and whatnot. With Lazlo out cold, there is no one in the immediate vicinity to provide advice about shutting the system down.

With time running out, one could either make an educated guess as to what controls what, and hope for the best, or evacuate.

To the relief of all, Liz is able to make use of her experience with scientific gadgets to figure out which levers need to be depressed and which buttons need to be pushed. The alarms are silenced, the gauges fall back to zero, the eerie glow of Cherenkov radiation in the reactor grows dim, and fades altogether.

Despite this desirable outcome, there seems to be no change in the actions of the creature. Having breeched the shell of the reactor, ocean water comes rushing into the structure. With the recent overheating of the reactor (now under control), this causes a tremendous amount of radioactive steam to burst out of it, spurting into the air and contaminating the surrounding area. It is obvious that this is the time to beat a hasty retreat.

When Liz and Zara drag the injured Lazlo and Tony toward the waiting boat, struggling to place the two men safely inside it, they may spare a moment to wonder what became of the guard and his dog. There is no sign of either one, although otherwise the craft seems normal enough.

It doesn't seem as if the boat has a flare, probably because it was thought unnecessary for the brief trip between the islet of Makeholmen and the reactor in the middle of the bay Sorhamna. In any case, the investigators had best head for the facility on Makeholmen as quickly as possible if they want to warn anybody, as the waters of Sorhamna are churning and bubbling, as if they are boiling.

Open Channel D

A secure line is established with the investigator's U.N.C.L.E. contact, via a clandestine communications satellite. The anonymous voice on the other end is able to supply some information, based on photographs obtained via the same satellite. It seems that there are several vessels approaching Makeholmen, the small island where the investigators are now located. The image resolution is not sufficient to identify them. Headquarters has also been able to just barely detect a weak radio signal coming from somewhere between the double peaks of Miseryfjellet, located due north of the investigators. Not much of the broadcast could be understood, but it appears to be a distress call from the missing crew of Ice Station Zebra. U.N.C.L.E. is preparing to send a team of operatives to the area, but it's going to take time. They suggest that the investigators study the situation on Makeholmen, report back, then journey to Miseryfjellet, now that they have a boat (although reaching the river valley between the double peaks, where it is assumed the Ice Station Zebra personnel are now located, will take some climbing) and do what they can for the crew. There may be unknown dangers at both locations, so exercise caution.

Taking some time for a badly-needed rest, the investigators receive further information from U.N.C.L.E. headquarters. In brief, it seems that there's an internecine battle going on on Makeholmen between THRUSH and a rogue, breakaway section of that organization. The crew of Ice Station Zebra is hanging on, but reaching the limit of how long they can survive. U.N.C.L.E. rushes a helicopter to the area, to take Tony back to the nearest hospital, and to drop off two more operatives.

A figure, clad in a thick Parka jacket, steps carefully out of the helicopter and waves casually to Tony as he is stretchered away.

"Nice fellow but very impetuous; always getting into scrapes." He says in a clipped, rather high-pitched voice.

He pushes back his hood to reveal a wrinkled, careworn face framed with a neat moustache and, incongruously, a black bowler hat. His somewhat imperious gaze settles on Liz, as if only now registering her introduction. He studies her curiously for a second before shooting out a thin hand to return her greeting.

"Professor Peabody. You may call me 'P' if you wish. So you're North eh? I have studied your ancestor's notes with great interest. Nice fellow to chat with too."

This rather odd turn in the conversation is interrupted by a loud thud, followed by a deep, guttural groan.

"Otto! Be careful will you! Honestly, one helicopter ride an he's completely discombobulated."

Rolling his eyes, he turns to reveal a terrifyingly large humanoid carrying a large case as if it were a bag of shopping.

"Just set it down man, before you break something!" he snaps, before fixing his gaze onto Liz once more.

"Now, would you mind telling me what's going on, hmm?"

As the investigators make their way towards Miseryfjellet in the boat, no doubt hoping that the place's name is not an omen of what is to come, Otto sniffs the air curiously.

"One like me here, but big."

The others are not able to detect any scents save those of the sea and, possibly, bird droppings.

Once the craft makes landing at a point between the two peaks of Miseryfjellet, it becomes clear that it will be a slow, if not extremely difficult, climb up to where the crew of Ice Station Zebra awaits. Midway through the upward trek, they hear the a loud roar, like that of a large animal, echo off the two mountains, although no such creature is seen.

The disconcerting sound echoes throughout the valley between the hills as the investigators make their way up the slope. The peaks, although not very high, are covered with snow at their tops, due to the Arctic climate. This proves to be a hazard as, after a particularly loud roar, waves of snow come hurling down into the valley.

Sufficient shelter is found, as the snow rushes to the ground with a muffled roar. In the near-silence that follows, the anguished cries of the crew of Ice Station Zebra comes from the valley below. All three are suffering from snow blindness as well, so they are hardly aware of their surroundings.

"They came out of nowhere, during a blizzard. Knocked us out, brought us here," says one.

"Wherever here might be," adds another.

"Don't know why," says the third.
Spoiler:
WIS rolls for Liz, P, and Otto; with Sharp Eyes, Liz = 14, P = 14, Otto = 9. (I'll assume Zara went off with Tony unless she returns.) 3d203d20
While P is preoccupied with interviewing the three men, his companions perceive something moving against the snowy background of the nearest slope, difficult to see because it's the same color as the snow. Although the details are fuzzy, it seems to be a gigantic humanoid figure rushing toward them.

Drawing closer, the figure proves to be a humanoid creature, eight feet tall or more, completely covered in white fur. It roars and snarls as it approaches, clearly in an aggressive state of mind. Seen thus, it is obvious that it is not so very similar to Otto after all, save in a superficial way.

As Tony's leaving, she says, "I know you're with Liz, but," and kisses her fingers before brushing them quickly over his lips. "For all the times you saved me."

In the introductions with P, she says "I'm Zara. I'm not a doctor of anything."

She joins in hugging the Zebra survivors. And offers to add gin to their treatment.

When the monster approaches, she pulls her own pistol, but doesn't fire it at once.

The hypothesis that the creature might be driven off by paranormal defenses soon proves to be false, as, during its display of anger, it casually crosses over the protective circle without even noticing that it is there. It seems, at first, uncertain at whom to direct its aggression, content merely to rage. It then notices the food tossed its way. This is sufficient to distract it for the brief time it takes to swallow the slab of dried meat in one bite. At this rate, it's going to take all the edible supplies the investigators have with them to keep its attention away from whatever its purpose might be for any extensive amount of time.
Spoiler:

Somewhere, deep inside its dim brain, the creature seems to realize that it is being bribed with the food. Although it is unable to resist the prospect of easily available sustenance, it remains wary of the investigators, snarling at them even as it eats.

The creature does not pursue the investigators, as they make their way back slowly to the boat with the injured. One of the three from Ice Station Zebra is conscious enough to mumble a few barely audible words.

"Gotta get weather station. 'Sall there." He soon sinks into unconsciousness. The other two are unable to communicate at all.

P's first aid kit is sufficient to prevent Liz from getting any worse, but that's about all. There's a somewhat more advanced medical facility at the meteorological station, but there's no way of telling what condition it might be in, given the general destruction there. There's also the mystery of what happened to Ice Station Zebra, and how the three men wound up here. Is ISZ still extant somewhere, and could it be of some help? Then there's the internecine war currently raging between THRUSH and SHRIKE. Is there a way to avoid getting caught in the middle?

For the moment. Zara tells P there's some medical gear at the ice station. The investigators and the survivors make their way northward to the meteorological station. The boat is greatly overloaded, riding extremely low in the water. In fact, by the time it reaches the point of land nearest the station, it is no longer seaworthy.

The station itself is even more of a shambles than before, whether due to the elements or some other cause. Somewhere in this jumble of broken glass and collapsed walls, there might be the necessary medical supplies.

The men deny any knowledge of the current situation on Bear Island.

"We don't even know where the hell we are," says one.

"Right," adds another. "One minute, we're taking readings, the next, this jet zooms by and launches a rocket at us. I thought it was World War Three, you know? Must have been some kind of knockout gas."

"Yeah," continues the third. "Next thing I know, we're in that valley where you found us. Whoever it was left us some meagre supplies and a lousy radio. Must not have wanted to kill us, I guess. At least not right away."

The first nods. "The important thing to do right now is to get back to Ice Station Zebra and see if anything's missing. There's some sensitive equipment there. Of course, that's not so easy. It drifts with the pack ice, you know. Could be just about anywhere above a certain latitude."

After ransacking the weather station for whatever supplies are available -- an unopened tin of instant coffee is a welcome sight -- everyone is ready for a good, long rest. During casual conversation, the men learn about Lars.

"I'd like to talk to that guy," one says. "I bet he knows more than he's saying. It was awfully convenient, the way he showed up just when you needed a guide."

Triangulation reveals that Ice Station Zebra is still transmitting an automatic time signal, if only weakly. Its current position puts it close to one of the islands in the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

"Nasty place," remarks one of the men. "The only inhabitants are Soviet military personnel, and they're not likely to welcome visitors."

"I'll bet they'd like to get their hands on some of the stuff on ISZ," says another.

Once everyone is healed up, rested, and supplied as well as possible from the remnants of the weather station, they head for the current location of ISZ. It's not a very long trip, but since the direction of travel is to the northeast, the weather becomes more severe and a lot colder as they approach. When the station finally appears, glittering in the endless daylight of the Arctic summer, it can also be seen that there is an installation of some sort on the island nearest it. One of the structures observed there is recognizable as a rotating radar antenna. Landing at ISZ without being observed, by machines if not by humans, presents a problem.

It's an ace up the sleeve of the West in the Cold War. If the data is still safe at ISZ, everything's OK. If whoever knocked us out and dragged us to Bear Island has it, it could get messy. Two heads are better than one, they say, and it seems to be true. Working side by side, Liz and P are able to transmit a signal that bounces off an icy cliff on one of the many tiny islands of Franz Josef Land, and from there directly to the nearest radar antenna.

"There ain't much to draw, lady. One big combination hut and storage area. Not that much room on a chunk of ice, you know.
You'll find everything you need right away."

This proves to be quite true. It's easy to find the paint, used to mark survey instruments when the team is doing their non-clandestine work. Unfortunately, all the computer tapes containing the satellite data are missing.

"That tears it. Somebody knew about those tapes, came here, knocked us out, and hauled us off to Bear Island. What I can't figure is why leave us alive."

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe they needed us, for some reason, although I can't imagine what, or why nobody was around when we woke up."

"It has to have something to do with the wrecked weather station on Bear Island, and the big hairy brute that attacked us. I just can't figure out why."

They don't seem to know about the thing in the reactor dome, or they might mention that as well. Or the internecine battle between THRUSH and SHRIKE, or the disappearance of Jan.

It's an eerie scene, as the bright Arctic summer light, doing little to relieve the bone-chilling cold, mixes with the high-pitched squealing of the jury-rigged equipment in an unnerving fashion. After fiddling with the components for a while in order to fine tune them, the investigators finally learn a few things.

1. The spy satellite has been recalibrated to transmit its findings to a location off the western coast of Africa, somewhere near the Gulf of Guinea. With what equipment is available, it's not possible to pinpoint the precise location.

2. The spy satellite's orbit has been altered into a circumpolar one that carries it over Bear Island, as well as parts of Europe, Africa, Antarctica, and a small part of western Alaska.

3. The investigators are able to access some of the data stored in the spy satellite, much of which is routine. There does seem to be some suggestion that there has been an unusual amount of electromagnetic energy produced in the Arctic Ocean, roughly on a north-south line leading from a point north of the Svalbard archipelago to the northernmost part of Norway.

As interesting as all this may be, what becomes of more immediate concern is the fact that all of this electronic activity has drawn the notice of others. To be precise, a Soviet helicopter approaches from the base on Franz Josef Land.

The prisoners are taken aboard the submarine. Given their apparent co-operation, the captain of the vessel, who seems fairly young to be in command, treats them with courtesy, although they are always under the careful eye of armed guards. After offering them a chance to clean up and get warm, he offers food and drink. His interrogation of the prisoners begins in seemingly informal style.

"Understand. You come us, go Arkhangelsk, guests. Then talk."

Zara is easily able to tell the others the exact route back to Bear Island. Altering the sub's course will take some subtle adjustment of the clandestine equipment they've concealed from the crew.

Same2d202d20 deal as before; consequences for double failure

Subtle enough to avoid detection by the commander and his men. Until the moment that it becomes obvious that the sub is about to run aground on an unexpected bit of land, that it. During the ensuing chaos aboard the vessel, with the pilot and navigator unable to explain what happened, the commander orders the crew to enter a harbor, of sorts, on the east side of the island.

In a tone suggesting a combination of dismay and suspicion, the commander orders a landing party to slog their way through the chilly water to shore. He suggests that the party keep an eye on their guests, to ensure that they do not get into any trouble.

"You know place?" he asks them.

Marching in the direction indicated by Otto, the party soon reaches the Russeelva River, crossing over it at a narrow place. Beyond this lies a bulge in the eastern coast known as Kapp Heer. From here, on a low rise, they can see the ruins of the reactor in the bay known as Sorhamna. There also appear to be several small vessels afloat in the bay, apparently unoccupied, some of them charred and smoking. To the east of the bay, on the tiny island known as Makeholmen, there is a sign of life, in the form of a fire with figures gathered about it. Running from the bay to the west, in the direction of the triple peak known as Antarcticfjellet, is a disturbance in the earth, as if something scraped the land.

"Where go?" The submarine commander studies the scene carefully. "Mountain, island, get boat?"

The boat carries its passengers safely to the island. After a bit of hiking to the fire, they spot Jan, as well as some men the investigators don't recognize. Everyone seems to be in good condition and well-clothed. There are several boxes of supplies here and there, and a large, strong tent.

It is true that the Soviet sailors and their commander seem unconvinced by the man's friendly overtures, arms ready at a moment's notice if the situation deteriorates.

At that moment, a sudden scream from the mainland is cut off by a loud splash.

The sailor is about to respond when a huge, slimy, blotched purple and red tentacle rushes out of the water next to him, grabs his leg, and pulls him screaming below the surface. Much churning of the surface of the water follows, as well as a darkening to a deep ruddy brown.

The surface of the icy water grows calm, with no sign of Ivanovich or the thing that carried him off apparent. An eerie silence surrounds those gathered together on Makeholem, now joined by by Liz.

"One of the things summoned by SHRIKE's destruction of our reactor," Jan says. "You understand our problem." He points to the west, to the bay known as Sorhamna, where the shattered remnants of the reactor still emit a pale green glow. In the decontamination room, a shower head that sprays out clean water under high pressure is located high overhead. The THRUSH agent turns the handle, located at a convenient place on the wall, that starts the water flowing. Or, rather, is supposed to start the water flowing, because all that happens is a high-pitched squeaking sound from the shower head.

Zara knows enough about basic first aid to administer artificial respiration to Lars, keeping him alive. There's a basic first aid kit in the anteroom between the control room and the reactor, but that's the area from which the scream came.

Is the anteroom safe to go into without protective gear? (Although if Zara hears any screams that sound like Liz, she's going to open the door anyway).

"Retreat!" calls Liz, already running, knowing she can't take any more hits like that. "Back to the control room! We'll flood the area with coolant to take out the blobs!"

The anteroom does not requires special radioactive protective gear, which is fortunate, as Liz's suit has a gaping hole in it. All the investigators gather in the anteroom, Liz intending to get to the control room to flood the reactor room with coolant. A delay is caused by the fact that the screaming THRUSH agent, last seen rushing into the anteroom, is currently lying on the floor, struggling to fend off a spider-like creature the size of a Great Dane, furry, with two huge red eyes, and too many legs to count, each one of which has a talon from which a thick, black liquid drips. Zara is barely able to get into the small room, and Liz and P are blocked from reaching her, and getting to the control room, by the thrashing, rolling pair of combatants.

The sight of the spider-like thing terrifies Liz, and she uncharacteristically screams. Staying well back from it, she prays and concentrates on banishing the abomination back to its own dimension.

Let's take this in order of posting, Otto first. DEX 9d20
The loyal Otto boldly approaches the creature, but, possibly due to the crowding of the room, is unable to strike at it.
Spoiler:
Resisting Exorcism, treating this as a Demoniac Beast, WIS 14d20
The attempt to send the creature back from whence it came by the terrified Liz appears to have no effect. If anything, the monster appears to be amused, if one can read anything into the movement of its multiple limbs. Much more alarming than that is the fact that, amazingly, it speaks, in a deep, growling, echoing voice, as if spoken by many persons standing in a pit.

"Doth thou fear us, woman? Thou shall be next. Witness!"

With that, the thing jabs the THRUSH agent with its claws, injecting black venom into his body. The man screams in agony.
Spoiler:
Zara dex 13d20
No doubt greatly unnerved by this latest development, Zara is unable to aim the carbine accurately, and the shot goes wild. Meanwhile, the THRUSH agent's body begins to shrink, as if fluid is being drained from it, although this does not stop his shrieks.

Seemingly intrigued by this request, the creature turns its attention to the man addressing it.

"Wouldst seek a boon? We have not dealt with such a one in many mortal lifetimes. Are aware of the price?"

P glares at his two companions with irritation.

“Discoursing with guns is not the only option you know. I’d have thought better if you both; honestly, you’re worse than Tony…” he admonishes.

He turns to the creature, bowing in apology.

“All I seek is a civilised exchange of knowledge. I have never spoken to a non-humanoid life-form before and am thus ignorant of the so-called price. Do please enlighten me… and, if you would be so kind, allow my friends here to continue into the control room.”

With the same air of amusement, the creature says "The price is indeed as stated by the lady whose countenance wears such a look of dismay at our appearance."

"Sir," he continues," addressing P, "we are reminded of another who sought knowledge from us, some centuries ago, as mortals reckon time. Sign, and shame Solomon with thy wisdom!"

With these words, a parchment appears from nowhere, along with a small knife. The words upon the parchment, written in bright red ink (?) are complex and esoteric, rendered in legalese of uncommon density; yet, in essence, it assigns the possession of all current secular knowledge to the signatory, in exchange for delivery of the signer's soul, to be collected upon demise.

Directing its multiple-eyed gaze to Zara, the thing says. "How sweet an irony would it be to face damnation for one's virtue! Child of compassion, merely sign, and thy friends shall go free."

In similar fashion, another parchment and knife appears, the words of a similar nature to the other, but describing the offer the creature has just made.

P takes the parchment, taking a while to read it fully (if nothing else, this might buy some time for Otto to position himself favourably).

Eventually, with a curt shake of the head, he hands it back.

“Alas, I think not. Knowledge at any price in itself belies a singular lack of intellect.”

He steps into Liz’s circle.

“A pity, as I daresay we could have many a philosophical discussion on what exactly constitutes a soul. You must have quite the perspective on the matter.”

It would seem that events have come to something of a Mexican standoff, with the investigators unable to leave the charmed circle for fear of attack, and the creature unable to enter it.

Unnoticed by the creature, Otto approaches. It seems almost as if the thing cannot see him, for some reason. The hulking brute awaits command from his master.

Meanwhile, Zara seems a bit distracted.

"I thought it had fled because it saw me placing a blessing on my carbine," says Liz, breathing a sigh of relief. "That would have hurt it like heaven if I had shot it. But it retreated first...we can talk later. First we need to redirect the coolant into the decontamination area. Those blobs are going to keep multiplying unless we put them on ice."

By this time, all the THRUSH agents are out of commission or have fled. Redirecting the reactor coolant into the decontamination area isn't the most difficult task in the world for scientifically-minded types, but it takes some time. Once this is done, the main control board flashes bright red letters on the situation screen, accompanied by the repetitive buzzing of an alarm.

COOLANT LEVEL DECREASING

This would seem to indicate that the planned diversion of the stuff is working, filling the decontamination room with the coolant as planned.

As the investigators rush to safety, managing to reach speedboats in time to escape the impending meltdown, they notice that there is no sign of the Soviets, the Ice Station Zebra crew, or the THRUSH agents who stayed behind. Whether they have managed to escape, or whether some other fate befell them, is unknown. There's not much time to ponder the question, as what remains of the containment dome after its encounter with the monstrous being that attacked it collapses, releasing a vast cloud of superheated steam into the air, hovering above Bear Island like a portent of doom. It remains to be seen what would be the best destination to head for.
