Masks Character Tread

At last the stars are almost right!

Soon Nyarlathotep's plans will come to fruition. Then the world will be changed irrevocably — but not quite yet. Pesky human investigators have learned much. Now they must survive long enough to make sense of what they know, and take resolute action.

Masks of Nyarlathotep is a Lovecraftian exercise in horror and mystery. This Call of Cthulhu roleplaying classic is a series of linked adventures forming one long and unforgettable campaign. Horrifying deeds and dangerous sorcery dog those who dare attempt to unravel the fate of the Carlyle Expedition

Appearance & Personality: Amy Lawrence is a pretty young lady with blonde hair, about five and a half feet tall and weighing around 130 pounds. She seems to radiate innocence, and she can be somewhat naive and trusting, not yet familiar with the ways of the world. She has always been fascinated by history and is an avid reader.

Background: Amy comes from an upper middle class New York family. Her father is a professor of history at Columbia University, and she got her love of the past from him. Amy was always a bright student and did well in school, though she did not have much of a social life. She attended Barnard College and graduated last year with a degree in history, but she does not want to end her studies, so she has enrolled as a graduate assistant at Columbia, doing research with her father. She is especially intrigued by ancient Egyptian and Mayan history, and while she has been on a dig at some Mayan ruins in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, she has yet to visit Egypt, though she longs to do so.

While at college, Amy attended a lecture by Jackson Elias about Mayan and other Central American death cults. She enjoyed it so much she spoke to him at great length about the subject matter afterwards. The two of them formed an instant connection, and Jackson invited her out to dinner with him. Amy was smitten, and while Jackson is much older than her, she hopes to one day marry him - if only he'll propose. He seems to regard her more as a daughter than a potential love interest, but she is glad just to be able to spend time with him.

Lately he has spent less and less time with her, having become obsessed with his latest project. When she asked him what he was working on, he refused to tell her. She had pleaded with him to take her along when he was about to leave on an expedition, but he declined, saying it was too dangerous. Amy burst into tears, saying that she was worried about it being too dangerous for him and that she wanted to be with him, blurting out that she loves him. The usually unflappable Jackson was stunned, but he quickly recovered. He held her hands and told her that she was very special to him, and that it was because she meant so much to him that he could not bring her along. He kissed her goodbye and promised that he would see her again when he returned.

Appearance & Personality:
Horatio Stokes is a tall and charismatic man. His appearance is well-kept and his jaw cleanly shaven.
In the field he dresses in khaki's, but in town he will wear tweed in shades of brown. His trusty Stetson hat, lined with the skin of cheetah is never far out of reach.

Horatio is an adventurer and takes life as it comes. He is charming and polite, though sometimes a bit of a rogue and a ladies man.
When abroad he respects and tries to emulate the behaviour of local ethnicities, and has in the past gone out of his way to help those of different colour in need.

Background:
The second son of the wealthy industrial Henry Stokes, Horatio never had much cares in his youth. Travelling with his father to inspect his rubber plantations on the Zambezi, he picked up a love for Africa, its people and its fauna and flora. The love of the former he pursued in his studies, the love of the latter in his hobbies and career as a sportsman and adventurer.

Stokes met Jackson Elias on safari in eastern Congo in the early twenties and two men kept in touch over the years, developing a fast friendship despite both men's roaming nature. Elias even introduced Stokes to Jonah Kensington, who published Stokes's monograph on hunting in East Africa titled "Red Snow on Kilimanjaro"

Stokes is currently attached to the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and works as a part-time lecturer and expedition consultant for the Institute.

Roger is a very big man. Most people - including Roger himself - would also define him fat. He is bald and has no beard. He has deep blue eyes and a perennial half-smile on his lips. Despite lacking a higher education, Roger is a clever and witty person, with an healthy dose of self-humor. He is usually very calm, almost as if he's weighing his every word and action. He has an amiable personality and tends to make a good first impression.
Roger used to be a very rich person. His mother died giving birth to Roger's little sister, Helen, in 1898. When his father died, in 1912, Roger inherited a fortune and large pieces of land south of New York. He was not ready for that, perhaps he would never have been. He passed directly from being a rebel to being an eccentric, dilapidating large sums of money without giving it any thought. Then he joined the cult. Years later Roger understood just how much of a fool he was, but back then, he felt like having finally found his place in the world. There were strange ceremonies, people wearing masks and, more often than not, sex and drugs - everything in the framework of a strange religion and the adoration of pagan gods.
He spent two years in the cult. Most of his fortunes disappeared then, donated from Roger to the cult. His sister, after trying to save him, took her share of the money and fled, unable to deal with the person her brother had become. To this day, Roger does not know where she is, and can only pray that she's well and happy.
Then Elias Jackson dismantled the cult. It was a methodical work of exposure, leading to the arrest of 32 people, including all the most important figures of the cult. Roger's first reaction was rage, but he quickly realized that Elias had - in fact - saved his life and the life of dozens of people. It was then that Roger swore to repay his debt to Elias. While not becoming exactly friends - the two men are too different for that - Roger and Elias has worked together in a few occasions and Roger has proven to be a faithful and determined ally. He wishes to help other people like Elias helped him.
Of the large fortune he once had, Roger currently owns only some lands where he himself works, occasionally with some help from seasonal workers. He has taken a liking to this simple life, mostly tending to the fields, sometimes going on a hunt with his faithful rifle. Except for the occasional collaboration with Elias, this is how he has spent the last five years.

Grown up on Ireland with an interest in Norse mythology, Gerald visited Iceland and explored the glaciers there. After his youth's escapades which lead to his rather expert shooting skill he moved to Capetown to pursue another adventure. To write a book as it were. He traveled the silk road to China and followed the least walked paths and documented in full his travels.

Having been published at a smaller New York publisher, Prospero House, he is currently at the New York office to launch a new escapade and see if there's interest in publishing his next endeavor.

Not having as keen eyes as he used to have, Gerald has become a prolific listener. Rather think before acting is the way to go when you're seventy-one.

Mr Thomson, he is waiting for a meeting with Jonah Kensington at the N.Y. office. He has hung his winter coat on a wooden butler and a bowler hat next to it. A manilla folder is being nursed in his lap as he eyes a secretary typing away at a Remington. He smiles at her and pats the folder. February always makes Gerald wish he was in Capetown. New York always dreary and damp. Beats Dublin, though. The mists of the hills of green have a mystery he always had liked, but the chill that came with the fog he could live without.

Well, weather is what makes life changeable. Like seasons of life itself. He likes to think he's experiencing an early fall, personally. Who admires the early summers of the opposite sex. Even late spring at times.

The secretary would classify as a July.

Thomson is getting up and approaches the secretary with an inquiringly raised eye brow. "Is Mr Kensington accepting visitors, this fine day?"

Marga, a confidante Thomson became friends with in Capetown has been traveling with him to New York and is currently staying at a lower end hotel at Lexington avenue. Funds are scarse so, no need to fling money around. After the meeting with Jonah Kensington, Thomson will head to Lexington Inn and spend the evening with Marga.

Phobias/Mental Disorders: PTSD associated with battle, nightmares about what was seen in battle, including the scattered body parts in the French lines that they had taken back from a German push. This included stumbling across some occult setting in the portion of the German lines that his squadron took over in a counter push. Artemis continues to believe that the decimated French lines that his squadron had taken over had been associated with what he and others had found in the German lines. [See the posting about the Baron in the fanfic section of the forum].

Wealth: $2,400 in bank and cash in room. Other assets include various antiques, stock certificates and documents that he buys and trades.

Appearance & Personality: Wounded in battle, walks with a limp and occassionally uses a walking stick or sturdy umbrella. Returned and went to college in Philadelphia. Gained a reputation for researching unusual events and artifacts. Smaller in stature, thinning black hair, green eyes and mustache.

Artemis' Background:

Occupation: Researcher and Antique Dealer. Artemis stll fills in at the mens store that he had worked at during college, but has been developing a somewhat successful historical research portfolio working with some of the more eccentric, and wealthy, members of the Theosophical Society and library that he still is involved with. He has been paid to research the authenticity of a various artifacts, coins and documents for his clients and their friends. This has had him in and out of the various historical societies in Philadelphia. His living at home with his mother, who has a few lodgers to help make ends meet, has allowed him to pursue this line of work. He has also received various bonuses, usually stocks or some "lesser quality" item that the eccentric men and women have given him that he knows he can sell, and does so when need arises.

Ideology/Beliefs:
Lutheran with practical applications, and very interested in new ideas. Fine with the use and consumption of alcohol being raised in a German household. He was active in his Lutheran Church serving in various roles including alter boy after his confirmation. Very interested in symbology used in both the church and mythology. He attends lectures at a Theosophical Society in Philadelphia, and continues to visit the University when ever there are unusual lecture offerings. During the war, his squadron had come across what looked to have been some for of occult activity in a portion of the lines they had taken during one of the American pushes over the top from a portion of what had been French held trenches but a mysterious mombardment had decimated most of a French militia company. Artemis had recognized some of the symbols and such in the seized ground, but could not place any of them well in his mind having been wounded in that effort. He went to one of Jackson Elias' lectures on the occult organizations and after the lecture approached Mr. Elias about what he had seen in the trenches in France. Elias didn't know much about the limited information Artemis could recall and share, but the two continued the discussion with a few others after the lecture at a local pub. Artemis the started a correspondence with Mr. Elias sharing information he could learn and discover from his fellow veterans and from his research efforts. He has also had some occassional assistance from Mr. Elias as Artemis has taken on research efforts for som eof Philadelphia's wealthy and eccentric members of the Theosophical Society.

Being a member of the International Order of the Odd Fellows, Artemis is familiar with the basic workings of such a lodge. Politically, he was a big supporter of Woodrow Wilson and believes that "America has so much to teach the world" and that "America is the land of opportunity." When he came back from the war, his views were dampened, but still feels that "Wilson had it right" so votes for the Democrats.

*Significant People:*
Mother - Appolonia (Wendt) Richter, was married to his father Henry Richter who died in 1919 flu epidemic.
Sister - Elisabeth (Elise) Viktoria Richter
Great Uncle - Wilhelm (Willy) von Isenberg, mom's family, a very minor German nobleman that had studied at Count v. Zeppelin's factories before the War. Was a Captain in a Hessian Observation Corps unit. Artemis visited the family homeland after he convolasced in France and the War had ended and briefly met his uncle.

Meaningful Locations:
Home in Germantown, PA.
University of Pennsylvania Library - love of that building was motivation for him pursuing high education at the University. Before the war, and then after, he was an active member of the University's Mechanical Club - machines and engines, he was most excited about the balloons and zeppelin discussions. When he returned, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in History, and had a minor in Applied Mechanics continuing his interest in the flying machines he had seen during the war.

Treasured Possessions:
1. Leather journal cover with a pocket flap in the back cover. Gift from parents with a picture of the family tipped into the front that was given to him when he went over seas. It has a series of notes written on the inside in dark ink from his parents and sister. The pocket contains a list of various clients, bank address, and also some "emergency funds" ($100). He also has kept his military identificaton and a few "French Postcards" that he picked up on the trip that still bring a smile to his face when he recalls his "out on the town" activities.
2. Small 1 1/2" stirling silver cross on a rather thick chain that he wears. Design is a bit unusual with there being a small silver disc at the center which is nearly worn smooth on the front. However, unbeknownst to Artemis, the disc is actually a silver coin of the Augustan vintage that has been passed down in some form for nearly 2000 years with this cross being a few hundred years old. Chain is relatively new.
3. Lucky coin - a silver chain cent from the American Revolution that he found in an old box in the attic of his parent's home. He carried it all throughout the war, and continues to do so.

Traits:
More cautious, and tries to find a solution that doesn't require use of force, mainly because of his limp.

Military Information:
Private. Enlisted on 7 Jan 1918 and reported to the 168th Aero Squadron, 2nd Army Air Service when it mustered into service at Hoboken, NJ. Their regiment then arrived in Liverpool on the 16th of February, and traveled to Ramsey Rest Camp in Winchester. Due to his mechanical interests, and quick study abilities, he as put into Company D and sent to Doncester/Yorkshire to be trained in basic engine repair, motor vehicles, and winches. After five months of such training, his Squadron shipped out to France arriving at the St. Maixent Replacemet Barracks in France on 14 Aug 1918. The 168th arrived at the Gengault Aerodrome near Toul in early October and joined the IV Corps Observaton Group. Survived the Battle of Ypres with a wound to his right side and to his left thigh that has left him with a permanent limp.

[Note: Folks I had developed Artemis for a WWI trenches game on this board that stalled. So, asked if I could make a few minor alterations to age that young lad up to mid twenties. Quartermass was kind to say yes. Handy noted I still had a 7th edition list of skills, so I copied over a 6th and then moved the skills over...where the base number was higher I reallocated some of those points and show how I did it. I used art instead of appraise. Notes are found after the skills. Once this is deemed ok, I will edit again and remove the notes]

Michael Anderson was born in a middle class family in Arkham. He graduated in History in the University of Arkham; his passion was ancient Egypt. But with the war, he joined the army and was send to France. When he returned, he didn’t have much patience to continue his studies and make a PHD like it was suppose, he wanted to go to the field. Since Egyptology was a major interest of the British and not of the Americans, he joined a British expedition; with his expertise in hieroglyphs, he was a valuable member. After 3 years, he started to search for sponsors to finance him but the only one who accepted him, wanted to make an expedition to the Yucatan. One of the members was Amy, a young and pretty student; he was vaguely interested in her, but she didn’t show any affection for him, so he returned to his work. Michael returned with several artefacts, a book about his findings and a promise from his sponsor to pay another expedition to Yucatan. Michael was starting to despair. And one day, Amy found him in a lecture. She decide to present him to Jackson Elias. Michael was less than enthusiastic: the man wasn’t exactly known to be a reputable academic… But Jackson quickly conquered Michael with his charisma and wits. Michael don’t take Jackson very seriously, but likes him anyway.

Being an orphan, Marga grew up tough and self reliant (taking Martial Art lessons from the local Chinese Herbal Shopkeeper). She has always had an ear and eye for music, humming music only she can hears. A teacher, Mrs Polly Bruitenbach, noticed her talents and made sure she received the proper musical education.

Marga and Gerald Thomson III paths crossed one night at a musical recital. They started talking, sharing interests and became fast friends.

There's still some bugs to iron out yet - it's a beta release. Am working on a new release for Wednesday - hopefully that'll iron out the bugs in the 6th edition character creator.

I've updated the Dholes House - Beta site.

The 'Create New' function will work on all the listed occupations, through to adding Hobby/Personal Interest pts. There's also a 'Character Upload' function, which bypasses the 'Create New' rules, so you can add an existing character.

Saved characters can be retrieved via the 'control panel' - options include:
  • Get character sheet (PDF - only single sided at the moment)
  • Add/Edit a character bio (will be of more use once reverse of character sheet is finished).
  • Character portrait - choose from a 'bank' of portraits or upload your own.
  • Update the HP and SAN Pts (for ongoing stories/campaigns).
The Handouts Section includes:
  • Calling cards
  • Telegram - 3 templates
  • Calendars
  • Newspaper Article generator (needs work still)
