Appearance & Personality: Roger Kramer stands about six feet tall and weighs 180 pounds, with short black hair and dark, intense eyes. He stays in good physical shape. Somewhat shy and withdrawn, Roger has always had an interest in history, wanting to learn more about people in other times and how they lived. He is extremely intelligent, but he has a mild form of dyslexia that makes it harder for him to learn. However, he has been determined to succeed in spite of it.
Background: Roger grew up in frigid Buffalo, New York. He struggled in school, having to work extra hard just to keep up with his coursework. His grades were not the best, though it was obvious that he was very bright. Nobody understood yet why he couldn't do better. He had not been encouraged to go on to college, but he insisted on continuing his education. He managed to get his degree in 1915, but it was hard for him to find work in his chosen field when competing against graduates who were higher in their classes than he was.
When America entered the Great War in 1917, Roger rushed to enlist. In training, it was discovered that he had a natural talent for marksmanship, and he became a sniper when sent to fight in France. He came through the war physically unscathed, but having to see the faces of the men whose lives he snuffed out, men not much different than him, wore on his conscience. When he came home after the war, he drifted aimlessly for a while, turning to drink for comfort. Unable to find a job, like many returning veterans, he decided to return to school, returning to Miskatonic University as a graduate student studying to be a historian and archaeologist.
It was at Miskatonic that he met Diana Veness, who at that time in 1919 was an undergraduate. He admired her passionate intenstiy when he saw her campaigning for the right of women to vote. He made the mistake of offering her a drink, whereupon she informed him that she was a member of the Women's Temperance League and told him "Lips that touch liquor shall never touch mine." Inspired by her example and wishing to be close to her, he gave up drinking for her sake and found his life much improved for it. The two of them fell in love and were soon married, though Diana kept her maiden name.
Roger never did complete an advanced degree, but his time as a graduate student enabled him to participate in numerous expeditions and gain valuable experience. When they heard about the planned long-term expedition to the Arctic, they both applied for it, making clear that they were a package deal. They could not bear to be separated from each other for two years. Having each other's company has helped them adjust to life in the frozen wastes, but even his childhood in Buffalo had not prepared Roger for the extreme cold.
