In the trunk of his car Thomas Furman has a small suitcase containing clothes for 3 or 4 days, a shaving kit containing the new improved gillete safety razor and a Colgate & Co refill shaving stick, and a autopsy kit wich contains a bone saw, heavy scissors (rib cutters), alcohol, cloth, autopsy knife, scalpel, suturing needles, tape measure, hammer and a 100cc test tube.

On him he has his car keys, an almost full pack of Luckies (Thomas picked up the habbit of smoking dealing with the stench of the deceased), a lighter, a wallet, a comb, a pen, notebook and his coroners badge.

A moderately successful writer of Westerns, Monroe is suffering from writers block. His agent suggested a short break with a change of scenery might help, and so Monroe has left Arkham for a jaunt into the countryside. The hike out into the country seemed like a good idea at the time, but soon Monroe decided it wasn't for him so he tried hitchhiking and luckily for him soon got a ride.

Barrington (Barty) Carter-Smythe has worked as an agent,researcher and freelance collector for various individuals and museums around Great Britain and Europe for many years.....Serving as an officer during the Great War he was wounded quite severely,and although he was able to return to field duty,the war ended shortly after he returned to his regiment
He is now semi retired due to the effects,both physical and phsycological of his wound.
While recovering in a sanitorium/hospital in Flanders,he met a Doctor from America,with whom he struck up a friendship.
with little now to occupy his time he is travelling to a small town,North of Arkham to fullfill his promise to visit the doctor,in hope,not only of renewing their friendship,but perhaps of some receiving further help with his phsycological health

Not wanting to take too much for granted and not wanting to impose too much on my friend Doctor Forfitt and his Family,I have only a small case with me containing enough clothes for a very short stay,a small gift for the Doctors wife,the painkilling medicines I allways carry with me. A small note/address book and a couple of good pens. My keys and a small flask of medicinal alchoholmy shaving kit,including a cutthroat razor and ofcourse my service revolver,which I have carried everywhere since I arrived in America. My passport and twenty dollars in bills and change.
Everything else including my travel trunk I left at the hotel.
