The cop and the nurse quickly enter the doorway.

"Thank you, those things were hot on our tails."

"Yeah and now their hot on our tails, so lets get moving." Juan says bitterly, looking for another direction to run.

-Let's go in direction of the all apartments, some place must be open or maybe there is another way out.At least we are increasing our numbers. I just hope that now we saved those two, we don't finish like those poor soldiers.

Above you the stairs continue upward, you guess to the roof. the door that gives access to the ground floor apartments and main entrance is closed.
The only noise you can hear, other than your own laboured breathing is the sound of the shamblers slowly climbing the stairs from below.
With Robert and Bernice now inside the building and the door closed you know it wont be long before their pursuers are outside trying to get in.

-Now what? We can't just go to the roof, until we are trapped by all those creatures without any way to escape.

"Lets just get some distance between us for now, maybe we can find a fire escape or something to get off the building with." Juan says, moving down the only direction that leads away from the zombies.

"Yes, good idea, kid!"

Robert makes sure everyone runs and covers the rear as the last man up the stairs.

Each landing, and there are five of them above you, has a door marked with a sign giving the numbers of the apartments to be found on that floor.

From top to bottom the stairwell is the same, concrete stairs with plastic coated iron railings providing a clear view down to the floor at the bottom. It is lit by florescent stip lights mounted into the wall at each landing, all seem to be working bathing the stairwell in cold white lighting.

From below the sound of your pursuers continuing to follow is beginning to lessen as the distance between you and them increases. However the combination of concrete steps and the echo effect of the stairwell means that your progress is hardly stealthy.

A few moments ago you had heard the door to the street crash open, so you estimate that the pursuing horde may now be somewhere in the hundreds.

Occasionally as you pass the doors leading from the stairwell to the floors, you hear the sounds of movement beyond. But as to whether the noises are made by the living or not you cannot be sure without opening the door...

-Let's just open one door, close it, and pray that they are stupid enouth to continue by the stairs.

Robert frowns as they race up the stairs.

I propose leaving those doors shut. Let's just carry on to the roof top, block the door there and take the fire escape down.

The stairs look inviting, the closed doors at each landing seem to present a security against any sudden entrance by any shamblers within the building.
The stairs end at a solid looking door marked 'Roof Access - Authorised Persons Only'. There is a keyhole, yet the door opens to a push, being neither locked nor closed...

Nono kicks the door, with the gun ready to shoot any dead one...

Valentine thinking:   Would have been nice to get a peek first...

Robert chases out after Nono, his gun ready in one hand.

After the dim lighting of the stairwell the sudden exposure to daylight, even late afternoon light, is slightly disorientating, and for a few moments you are rendered helpless.

Luckilly, other than a few pidgeons, the roof looks empty.

Near the centre of the roof a small louvre sided building is the only structure of note. Fixed to it are several TV ariels. There are various cables and lines that run down the side of the structure, accross the roof and into the building below.

In the far right corner of the roof the railing of a fire escape can be seen.

From the structure comes the hum of machinery. From the street below the sound of gunfire and screams testify to the continuing struggle. In the distance more gunfire, explosions and the muted scream of sirens.

-The city isn't lost yet. Let's try the fire escape?

"Let's see if we can stall our pursuers a bit first, yeah?"

Robert tries to jam the door, either by shoving the blade of his pocket knife under the door, or by using his handcuffs to tie down the handle.

Once that's done he turns to the kids and the nurse and smiles.

"Well, I think that bought us at least a few seconds, now let's run. Down the fire escape!"

Amidst the noises of the city, and the hum of machinery from the maintenance building, you are suprised to hear a gentle sobbing, swiftly stifled from the louvre sided structure.

"What's that?"

Robert signals for the other to be quiet as he circles the building, his hand tight around his 45.

Nono nods and prepare her weapon too, and go carefully...
