Dr. Smith is an African-American doctor who is getting on in years. He is tall and carries himself with an air of distinction, but underneath the surface he is deeply worried. He had been in Cheyenne attending a medical conference when the outbreak started. He got out on one of the last commercial flights, which was bound for Omaha, but it was redirected to the airfield because Omaha's municipal airports were under attack and the city was quarantined. After it landed, the plane was commandeered and he was left stranded.

Lawrence Adler is a tough, professinal, no-nonsense principal cut from the same cloth as Joe Clark. In fact, like his inspiration, Principal Adler carries a wooden baseball bat. A casual observer would describe Brian Stevenson as just any other guy, working his way through life in an honest job, looking for a woman to sashay into his life and not much else. Beneath the typical blue-collar-worker appearance however is a broiling mass of anger at both those around him and humanity in general. Brian feels resentment towards the world because he feels betrayed by it. All his life he has been fed the media line that everyone is special, everyone is a hero, while the government just sees him as another tick in a box. Until the apocalypse this anger was only expressed in a controlled and sterile manner, with regular sessions at the local gun club and firing range as well as hard, fast driving.
