Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Doc helped Sally hobble the short distance from the pickup truck to the bottom of the stairs. As they arrived, the others caught up with them. Deadeye was helping Nitro limp along, Mutt was holding Katarina by the arm, and Ghost was by himself in front of them. The station was small, with steep wooden stairs that would allow two to climb at a time. The stairs led to a balcony surrounding the station itself, some twenty feet above ground level. Wooden supports kept it elevated. The station was a square building with solid glass windows all around at waist height, and the door was just opposite the top of the stairs.

In the ranger station-
Dan watched through the window as the five men and two women arrived below. Julie sat at her radio near the door, trying in vain to establish contact.

"Hello?" yelled Sally as they began to climb the stairs.

Dan Turns to Julie and Says, "Grab your weapons and get into the bedroom, I don't want them knowing there is two of us just yet, so keep the door closed and stay quiet." Grabbing his Rifle and pistol he walks to the door.

Once through the door he calls down to the group, "Not to seem inhospitable, but would you all mind leaving your weapons down there?" While formed as a request, he placed enough authority in his words to ensure it was taken as an order.

Sally removes her .45 from it's holster and holds it up. "Can I just empty the gun and hand both to you? If things go south, and they tend to these days, I'd rather not have to run down here on my bum leg to be able to aid in the fight."
Sally ejects the magazine and empties the chamber, leaving the weapons slide back.

In the ranger station-
Julie nodded and crouched low, so that she wouldn't be visible through the windows. She retrieved her bow, arrows, and pistol and slipped through the door into the bedroom, shutting it after her.

Outside the ranger station-
"Yeah, leaving our weapons down here would be a problem," Mutt, the man carrying the M-16 with the grenade launcher called up to Dan. "Judging by all the bodies lying around, you've already been attacked. We can't help defend the station if we don't have our guns. Don't worry, we have no intention of hurting you. If we did, we could have already killed you. We just need a place to stay the night, that's all."

Dan could see that they did still have their weapons. The man in scrubs only had a pistol on his belt, and the other men had pistols and a few grenades on their utility belts too. Some of them had knives too. Sally, the blonde woman, had two .45 automatics. She also had a few hand grenades on her belt. The redhead appeared to be unarmed. The man with the sniper rifle also had an M-16, though this one was without a grenade launcher. The huge man with the AK-47 had a bayonet on the end of it, and he also toted a shotgun. The last man also had an AK-47, but he had a knife on his belt rather than a bayonet. With that kind of firepower, they certainly could kill him if they felt like it.

Outside the ranger station-
"I could go up too," suggested Katarina. "I have no gun. I will talk to him and get him to agree to let everyone up." She fingered his collar. "I good at getting men to do what I want."

Mutt shook his head. "No, I don't trust this guy," he said. "Doc, how about you go up with her? You can leave your gun with me. I'll give it back when he lets the rest of us up."

"Sure," said Doc, handing over his pistol.

In the ranger station-
Keeping low, Julie locked the door and looked around for a hiding place, but she couldn't find a good one in this tight space. She settled for crawling underneath the bed and hoping nobody would find her if they came inside. She didn't know who was out there, but Dan was evidently worried about them, and she couldn't help being afraid too.

Sally begab to make her way up the stairs to the main level of the forrestry tower. When she was close enough for the man to hear her she smiled and said, "Thank you. My name is Sally, this is Doc." Sally extended her hand to the ranger. When she shook the man's hand, she made sure to make eye contact and motioned with her eyes back down to the main group.

While shaking Sallys hand Dan notices the look she made. Trying not to act obvious since it probably means the pose a threat Dan replies, "Nice to meet you both, my name is Dan, Sorry about all this but even with everything going on groups armed like this tend to make me nervous." Dan steps aside to let Doc and Sally walk ahead of him towards the door. Hoping to give a friendly appearence to the rest, he gives them a friendly nod while making room for the other two to pass.

Sally continues up the stairs with a visible limp. She stumbles on the last stair, falling into Dan. She whispers to him when close: "They are rapists and murderers."
Sally leans on Doc for support: "Ugh. My leg is killing me. That car ride make it tighten up. Anyways, thanks, Dan. It's nice to meet you too. I can totally understand your nervousness." Sally says with a smile. "What if the others empy their guns like I did and put them in bag or something that you can watch. Would that work? That way we can help to protect everyone if things go south."

In the bedroom-
Julie could hear voices in conversation out on the balcony, but she couldn't make out what they were saying. Still, they didn't sound loud or angry, and her fears eased a little.

Outside the ranger station-
"Nice to meet you," said Doc, the man in scrubs who had helped Sally up the stairs, shaking Dan's hand. When Sally whispered in Dan's ear, he heard it too. "My real name's Nathan Hill, but everyone calls me Doc. Mutt would never agree to being disarmed, even with the weapons accessible in bags. I know you're afraid, but he has no quarrel with you and no intention of starting anything. All he wants is stay here tonight and leave in the morning. I wouldn't do anything that might be construed as hostile if I were you. The guys are very jumpy. I don't think there's any way around letting them up with their weapons. As long as you don't do anything rash, I promise you'll be fine."

Down below, Mutt and his men looked around nervously while they waited for Sally and Doc to talk to Dan.

Outside the ranger station-
Doc helped Sally through the door and inside the ranger station with Dan, then shut the door behind him. Katarina waited below with the men.

In the ranger station-
Three quarters of the station were taken up by the main L-shaped room. An interior door, which was closed, led to another room that occupied the last quarter. There was also a trapdoor in the ceiling of the main room that was currently open, and a ladder led up to the roof. Near the door was a desk with a shortwave radio, currently crackling with static. A closed locker stood beside the desk. In the back was a table and chairs. Doc eased Sally over there and into a seat, then sat down next to her.

In the bedroom-
Julie continued to wait nervously under the bed.

"Keep an eye down there to make sure they don't charge up here." Sally said to Dan as she reached out and grabbed Docs ahnd to hold it. "Doc, sweetie, I know Mutt has no quarrell with Dan, here, but you know we can't just let Mutt and his gang continue on." Gabbing his hand with both of hers, she looks into his eyes, giving him her best pupy dog look: "Please, you know we have to do something."

"I'm going to trust you two but please don't make me regret that." Dan said to Sally and Doc. Turning his head towards the closed door Dan continued, "Julie come on out but stay low, I think you should hear what these two have to say as well."

"Don't worry, Dan. You can trust us. After all I have been through today, I need all the friends I can get. Like Doc, here." Sally says. "Doc, stand up and walk around while talking so it looks like we are negotiating with Dan.
Turning to Julie and Dan, Sallyl continues quietly: "The men below are members of a white supremicist group. They deal in drugs and snuff films and have a van load of women prisoners whom they have been raping and torturing for god knows how long. They are armed to the teeth and are planning to go to another supremicists compound. If were were to let them come up here and go on their way in the morning, I do not doubt that they would do so without violence. However, I cannot stomach the thought of not doing anything to help those poor women, and I know Doc is with me on this. I don't think they would let the women go without a fight. I suppose we could ask, though."

In the bedroom-
Julie crawled out from her hiding place under the bed. Crouching low, she went over to the door, unlocked it, and opened it.

In the ranger station-
The door opened, and a beautiful woman in a ranger's uniform similar to Dan's emerged, bent low. Her long, black hair spilled over her shoulders. "Hi, I'm Julie," she said to Sally and Doc.

Doc paced back in forth in front of the windows while Sally explained the situation to the rangers. "Oh my God," said Julie, putting a hand to her chest. "You're right, we have to do something. But what can we do?"

"Mutt won't just let them go," said Doc. "Not after a couple of them killed his brother Jeff. If I were in charge...but I'm not. I've never approved of what they were doing to those girls. I hope you're not thinking of fighting them. They have plenty of firepower, and I don't want any more killing." He thought for a moment as he looked out the window. "It'll be dark soon, and I'm sure we're going to be taking shifts staying awake and standing watch. There might be an opportunity there to slip out to the van."

Outside the ranger station-
Katarina stood with the skinheads, waiting to be told to come on up. She looked around nervously as the light faded a little more. She shivered a little, too distracted to hear anything. Most of the men seemed a little tense to her, but she wasn't sure why.

"I think that's probably our best bet, Doc. Good thinking." Sally said with a smile. "What kind of weapons do you have? Is the rifle and bow all you got?"

"We've each got a pistol too," said Julie. "I have a Glock and Dan has his revolver. And there's our survival knives. Otherwise, that's it."

"That's good news" Sally said. "I don't think Julie can hide the whole time with them up here so you might as well meet them as well. I'm thinking that we see if they will unload their weapons so they can come up here. Sometime tonight, one of us needs to get out to that van and rescue those girls. Maybe we could arm them, or something. Is there anyplace around here that is safe for them to hide out in?"

"We should set up look outs for the night in two person shifts." Dan looks around at the group before he continues, "Me and Doc take first and Julie and Sally the second. When we wake you up all of us should sneak out and free the girls then make a run for it."

"I don't think we could convince the others to not take watch." Sally says with concern. Sally reaches into her back and pulls out a grenade. "If we can, though, maybe we can roll one of these into this place as we leave?"

OOC: Does Sally still have the Sig Sauer she pulled off of the corpse in the car they came across on their way here?

"I'm not really looking forward to meeting them," said Julie with a shudder, "but I guess there's no other way. Oh, there's also an axe in one of the cabinets here, but neither of us knows how to use it for anything other than chopping wood."

"No, they're not going to decline to take a turn at watch," said Doc, "and that wouldn't work anyway. What about Katarina?"

Doc nodded. "You're going to have to let them up here soon," he said. "If you keep them waiting any longer, they're going to start to wonder. They may already have."

As if on cue, Mutt shouted up from below: "Doc, what the hell is taking so long?! Can we come up already?"

Doc leaned out the door. "He wants you to all unload your weapons, and then you can come up!" he called.

"That's not acceptable! We need our guns ready to use. Get him to allow us to keep our guns loaded, or we'll just have to consider an alternative plan for tonight."

Outside the ranger station-
Katarina heard the exchange between Mutt and Doc and noticed that the men were getting antsier as the sky was starting to get darker.

"We're not ejecting our magazines!" Mutt called back. "If it's no big deal to reload them, then it shouldn't be a big deal to keep them loaded. Maybe the ranger doesn't trust us. That's fine, we don't trust him either, and our weapons stay loaded! If he doesn't like that, you two can come back down here and we'll try something else."

"What's going on up there?" asked Deadeye, shaking his head in confusion. Ghost whispered something in his ear. "Ohh..."

Katarina looked around nervously, unable to overhear.

In the ranger station-
"I think you'd better just agree to let them come up," said Doc. "'Something else' could mean just about anything, and his patience has clearly run out."

"I guess so," said Julie, swallowing. "I just hope we don't regret it." She looked to Dan to see what he would do.

"Okay, they said you can come up, for christs sake." Sally says to Mutt. "Would it kill you to work with people for once? I don't know if you've noticed, but there aren't may humans around anymore. Isolating youself from the remaining surviors out here going to wear you out, Mutt" Sally says with a joking smile.

"All right," said Mutt. "Deadeye, you help Nitro up first so he can get Doc and Sally to look at him and you can get up on the roof. Katarina and I will be behind you and Ghost will bring up the rear."

"Right," said the man with the sniper rifle on his back. He helped the big man with the injured leg up the stairs to the station. Mutt put an arm around Katarina's waist and prepared to follow.

In the ranger station-
Deadeye and Nitro squeezed their way through the station's front door. Deadeye smiled when he saw Julie. "Well, hello there, darlin'," he drawled with a thick Kentucky accent. Julie looked at her feet nervously.

"I'll take him from here," said Doc, letting Nitro lean on him.

Through the windows, Dan could see that it was getting significantly darker.

Looking around at the assembled group Dan says, "We need to decide on our defenses. I highly doubt this will be a quiet night for us here." Looking at Mutt as the obvious leader of the new group he continues, "It may be a smart idea to bring your vehicles in closer in case we have to run."

In the ranger station-
Mutt and Katarina paused in the doorway. He nodded at Dan's suggestion, then tossed the pickup truck's keys down to Ghost. "Bring the pickup truck up and park it under the station near the bottom of the stairs, Ghost!" he called. "The van can't go off-road, but you can move it so that it's on the road across from the station. Uh, park them so they're facing south in case we need to drive out in a hurry. There aren't any populated areas down that way, but there are towns coming up to the north. I'm afraid we don't have any rope with us. There wasn't exactly time to pack."

"Will do!" called Ghost from below, snatching the keys and running for the pickup truck.

"Yeah, almost all of the attackers came from the north," said Julie. "I'm Julie, and this is Dan." She indicated her fellow ranger. "I think we've got some rope in that supply cabinet, Sally." She pointed it out.

Mutt walked Katarina inside and held out his hand. "I'm Mutt, and I'm in charge of our little band of brothers. This lovely young thing is Katarina. I'm very pleased to meet you." Julie reached out to shake his hand, but he raised it to his lips and kissed it instead. "If I knew there were rangers as pretty as you, I'd have visited our national parks more often."

"Oh, really." Julie pulled her hand away, and after a second he reluctantly released it.

Deadeye saw the ladder leading to the trapdoor in the ceiling. "I'll go get set up on the roof," he said, climbing it.

"Keep the vehicles covered, Deadeye," said Mutt. "They're our only ticket out of here."

"Come on, Nitro," said Doc, "Let's get you patched up." He helped the big guy into the bedroom, sat him down on the lower bunk, and took out his medical kit. He cleaned and bandaged the leg wound, pulling out the shrapnel with a pair of tweezers. He was able to repair most, but not all, of the damage.

"Deadeye," Sally called out. "Take the rope with you and tie ot off really good to something, if you could. Then we can throw the other end down to Ghost and have him tie it off to a tree by the trucks so we can zip line down to them if needed."

Dan looks to Mutt and asks, "What can you tell us about what is going on? We haven't had any outside contact and would appreciate anything you could tell us."

In the ranger station-
Mutt nodded, took a coil rope about fifty feet in length out of the cabinet, and tossed it up to Deadeye, who took it with him onto the roof. "Well, everywhere we've seen has gone to hell," he said. "We got attacked this morning by a bunch of flying mosquito-like things, and everyone they stung turned into one of those critters roaming around and eating people, and everyone they bite becomes like them too. We reckon they're already dead, on account of I've seen people who were shot dead, not stung or bitten, get back up and attack. It's every man for himself out there."

In the bedroom-
Doc continued to treat Nitro's leg wounds, sewing them up as well as he could.

On the roof-
Deadeye tied one end of the rope to an antenna and dropped the other end over the east edge, away from the road. There were no trees by the road or immediately outside the ranger station, as the area had been cleared, but there were some further from the road. The nearest one was a short distance east of the station. He lay down on his stomach and set up his sniper rifle, then spoke into his radio: "Ghost, when you bring back the pickup truck, park it on the east side near the tree and tie the end of the rope to that tree, in case we need to make a quick getaway." He peered around, looking through the scope, but saw nothing of interest.

Outside the ranger station-
Ghost got behind the wheel of the pickup truck and drove to the east side of the station as Deadeye had instructed him, parking so that it faced south.

Sally looks to Dan; "I'm not sure where to start,but essentially, the dead are rising and attacking everyone. From what I can piece together, it started with the meteor shower a few days back. Big mosquito type things came out of the meteors and began attacking people. Those that died got back up and starting attacking anything in sight. Now it would appear, anyone that dies will come back up regardless of whether they have died due to attack, or not. Back at the diner, there was a doctor or scientist that was headed to Omaha. She was working ona cure......" Suddenly, Sally's eyes got wide with excitement. "A radio! Do you have a radio?! Maybe we could get in contact with them and see if they have made any progress."

"Yeah we have a radio right over here." Dan says as he shows Sally the radio, "We haven't been able to reach anyone though." Dan walks over to Mutt and says, "We need to set up a watch rotation. I think you guys should get some rest the first watch and me and Jules can take it since you all seem to have more combat experience." Dan starts to walk off before turning back and saying, "If you would feel more comfortable with some of your people then have Sally and Doc join us."

"What channels were you trying?" Sally asks Dan as she moves over to the radio. "I'd be happy to help keep watch. This pistols won't be of much use from range, but I could most certainly help Dead Eye keep watch up top."

Katarina just sits there, looking downhearted. Coming up to the surface has just reminded her of the fact that everyone was dead. All her family, all her old friends, all those people she used to fantasize about going back to. Her eyes got a little juicy but she was determined not to cry. She hadn't cried before. She wouldn't now. She rested her chin on her hands and tried to focus on what the other people were doing.

In the ranger station-
"Sally, that's a kind offer to take watch, but you need to get some rest," said Mutt. "You've been hurt real bad and got your leg broke, and you must be exhausted after everything you've been through. Not to mention that your leg will make climbing the ladder a pain. You can go get yourself some beauty rest when you're ready." He nodded to Dan. "We'll have three watches, three hours each. First watch is 2000 hours to 2300, second is 2300 to 0200, and last watch is 0200 to 0500. We'll leave at first light, and you're both welcome to join us if you like. But it's precisely because my people have more combat experience that at least one of us needs to be on watch at all times. Deadeye's already up on the roof, so he can take first watch. Dan, you can watch with him. Nitro and Ghost can have the middle watch, and Doc and I will take last watch. Julie, I won't ask you to keep watch if you don't want to, but you can help out if you like."

"Hey, Mutt, can I have my gun back now?" asked Doc from the bedroom as he kept working on Nitro's leg.

"Sure." Mutt went over and returned it to him.

Julie helped Sally settle into the chair in front of the radio and set it up for her, showing her how to operate the shortwave. "We haven't heard a peep from anyone for hours," she said. "Nothing but static. You might want to go ahead and reload your pistols, by the way."

Sally did feel exhaustion catching up to her now that Mutt mentioned it. She still had strength to keep going, but for how much longer could she keep it up? She hunted through the frequencies, at first finding nothing but static. But then she heard a young male voice: "Hello? Can anyone read me?"

On the roof-
Deadeye continued peering around, finally spotting something in the distance. He went deathly pale, shocked but not broken. "We got company!" he shouted into his radio so that all could hear him. "One bogey incoming from the south, high speed, range a few hundred yards and closing fast." He zeroed his rifle and focused his scope on its head. "I think maybe it followed us. Hang tight, folks, I got it."

Outside the ranger station-
Ghost saw a moving shadow in the distance, but couldn't quite make it out. He got out of the truck and tied the rope around the nearest tree, some ten yards east of the ranger station. Then he hustled back towards the van.

Sally's eyes went wide with surprise. She keyed the mic: "I'm reading you. Over. Who are you? Where are you? Over"

Sally released the mic and looked back to Mutt. "Yeah, I am tired and do need to sleep but I think getting on the roof will be best for me. My leg is shit and if I need to climb that ladder in a hurry, I'm either going to slow you all down or be the last one up. Either way, it's not good. Give me a sleeping bag and I can catch a few winks up there."

Dan figures if there is one monster out there then there is a good chance more aren't to far behind. Grabbing his rifle he heads out the front door to watch over that other fellow that went to move their vehicles.

On the roof-
Deadeye began firing at the distant zombie's head. His first shot missed due to the fading twilight, and his second was even wider. A third bullet missed, as did a fourth and fifth. "Damn!" he said, adjusting his sights. "Slippery little bugger."

In the ranger station-
"I'm on Martha's Vineyard," said the young man on the radio, excitement in his voice. "Where are you? Over."

"Well, I can carry you on up to the roof when you're done on the radio if you like," said Mutt, returning to the main room while Doc kept working on Nitro. "Got any sleeping bags, Julie?"

"No, but we do have a couple of thick blankets in one of the cabinets for emergencies," said Julie. She walked over to Katarina. "Hi, how are you doing? Would you like something to eat?"

Outside the ranger station, on the balcony-
Dan emerged into the crisp night air and stood at the rail on the south side of the station, looking around. He could see the man reach the van and get into the driver's seat.
Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Ghost looked around, but he couldn't see what Deadeye was shooting at. He ran back to where he had parked the van and got behind the wheel.

While Dan could see the man called Ghost getting into the van he was unable to see what Deadeye was firing at. Dan decided to move down closer to the van in hopes of getting a better view.

"We're in Nebraska at a Rangers Station" Sally says into the mic. "What news do you have from Marthas Viniard? Have you been able to contact anyone else?"

On the roof-
Deadeye kept firing, missing with his first shot due to the dimness. His second shot was much better, only missing by a handbreath. His thhird, however, connected and splattered its brains all over. The creature fell, and he ceased firing. "Got him!" he said on the radio. "All clear."

Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Ghost drove the van closer to the station as Deadeye fired from the roof. Dan reached the bottom of the stairs shortly after Deadeye stopped shooting. He couldn't see the body, but that was probably a good thing. Had it gotten close enough for him to see, it might have been able to attack him.

Ghost drove past the station and turned around so that the van was parked on the road thirty yards due west of the station, facing south, before getting out. He waved to Dan. "You can go on back up!" he called. "Deadeye took care of it."

In the ranger station-
Doc was now about halfway done with Nitro's leg. Mutt breathed a sigh of relief when Deadeye reported on the radio. He smiled at Julie, who shivered nervously. "Don't worry, darling," he said. "With Deadeye looking out for us, you've got nothin' to be afraid of."

Julie looked concerned when Katarina failed to respond. "Would you like to freshen up?" she asked her. "The bathroom's small, but there should be enough room. We could have a talk while you do - just us girls."

"I'm at my parents' estate," replied the young man on the radio to Sally. "They...they didn't make it. I don't know what else is happening on the island. I just hunkered down here with my dad's hunting rifle and I'm waiting for it all to end. I had heard from people in various parts of the world earlier, and it was pretty bad everywhere. I haven't gotten anyone else on the radio for hours. Haven't seen any of...them...either in a while."

"What is your name?" Sally asked the young man on the radio. "My name is Sally. I'm sorry to hear about your family. I'm.... I'm sure I've lost my family as well. I've been away from them fo so ling that I never got a cahnce to tell them 'I love them'." Sally paused as tears welled up in her eyes.

Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Ghost looked around briefly, then shrugged. He locked up the van and walked back to the bottom of the stairs. "I'm done down here," he said. "Let's go on up."

On the roof-
Deadeye pulled out his partial magazine, displeased at how many bullets he had spent to take out just one target. "What a waste of ammo," he muttered to himself as he reloaded with a full one.

In the ranger station-
The young man sniffled on the other end of the radio. "They know," he said at last. "My name's Jason. I'm only fifteen. I listen on shortwave radio as a hobby. Most kids my age surf the Internet instead, but I've always liked radios. And they still work, but the Internet doesn't any more. I know, I've checked. Are you a ranger, Sally?"

Julie took Katarina by the arm and helped her to her feet. "Come with me," she said, leading her into the bedroom. The girl followed mutely.

In the bedroom-
Julie led Katarina through the bedroom, where Doc was still helping Nitro. She ushered her into the bathroom.

In the bathroom-
The bathroom was very small, with barely enough room for the two of them. There were a toilet, a sink, and a shower stall. There were no windows, and the only way out was the door back to the bedroom, which Julie closed. Then she opened the sink's faucet. Running water flowed into the sink, the sound making it harder for anyone not in the bathroom to overhear them. "Are you okay?" she asked Katarina softly. "How can I help you?"

"It's nice to meet you, Jason." Sally says warmly. "No, I am not a ranger. I am a nurse. I was traveling to a new job when all this went down. We came to this ranger station to find a safe place to stay for the night. There are two rangers here who are very nice and are letting us stay here." Sally takes a note of what channel she is speaking to Jason on.
"Jason, are you in a safe place? Somewhere where they cannot get to you?"

Deadeye resumed looking around, scanning the dim horizon through his scope.

In the ranger station-
Ghost and Dan returned from below. "The vehicles are in place," reported Ghost.

"Good," said Mutt. "Glad you made it back up here."

"Not exactly," replied Jason on the radio. "I'm upstairs at my parents' place. That's where the radio is, and it's not really portable. But there haven't been any of them around here for hours, and I was able to take care of the ones that showed up earlier with the rifle. But it's dark now, so I couldn't see them until they got close to the house. I never wanted to kill anyone, but those people just went crazy. They would have eaten me if I hadn't shot them. God, what could make people do that?"

In the bathroom-
Katarina looked blankly at Julie, wondering how much she could trust her. She couldn't tell much about her, but she had to trust someone. She wrapped her arms around the other woman and pressed her face against her shoulder as tears spilled down her cheeks, tears that had been bottled up during months of anguish.

"I..don't know, Jason" Sally said into the radio. "When this all started, there was talk of the meteor shower and some big insects that came from them and starting killing folks. Those folks rose up and started attacking people. Now anyone that dies comes back as one of those.... things. They aren't people. They are zombies."
"Jason, is there an attick you can get into for the night? These zombies are very dangerous and could over run you very quickly."

Deadeye maintained his watch vigilantly, looking for more zombies but not particualrly wanting to find any.

In the ranger station-
"Insects?" said Jason. "Zombies?! You mean like in those movies? I...there is an attic. I guess I could hide there until morning. Do you think it will be over by then, Sally? The government will have to send people to rescue us, right?"

"How's Nitro doing?" asked Ghost.

"Much better!" called Nitro from the bedroom.

"I'll be done in a couple minutes," added Doc.

"That's good. Maybe I should go back down and scout the area," suggested Ghost.

"I don't know," said Mutt. "That's awfully risky. It's getting darker, and you probably won't see the enemy until they're right on top of you."

In the bathroom-

"I know, Jason, it all sounds crazy." Sally says. "I'd have said the same thing if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. As for a rescue coming, I don't know when it iwll come, but I know it will come. The government has some of the smartest people on the planet working to fix this problem. I know 'cause I met some of them. They'll figure out a way to fix this, but we have to stay alive until they do. If you can gather up any food and water that you can and quietly get into the attic you will be safe. Just be caseful and be quiet about it. Is it dark their yet? If so, wait to gather supplies until the morning. Just get into the attic and close the trap door behind you."

"Yeah, it's dark," said Jason. He paused. "It's almost 9:20 here. Okay, I'll go up to the attic now. I'll talk to you in the morning on this same frequency." With that, the connection shut down.

In the bathroom- Katarina and Julie left the bathroom.

In the bedroom-
Katarina and Julie returned through the bedroom, where Doc was finishing up with Nitro's leg.

As Dan passes the door to the station on his circuit of the building he sticks his head inside and says, "Everyone should try and get some sleep. We should all probably move out at first light." after that he continues on his ways.

"Sure, take your time," said Mutt. "Ghost, you should head on up top first. I'll wait for her." Ghost nodded and climbed the ladder.

Sally passed Julie and Katarina on her way to the bathroom. Both women returned to the main room.

In the bedroom-
"There, all done," said Doc. He helped Nitro to his feet, and the big guy practiced walking around. His limp was now gone.

"Thanks, Doc!" said Nitro. "It's good as new."

"Next time be more careful with those rockets." He turned to see Sally enter. "Hi, Sally. I wish your injuries were as minor as his. Need any help in there?" He took her arm and assisted her to the bathroom door.

In the bathroom-
Sally entered the bathroom, which was tiny. There was little in it: a toilet, a sink, and a narrow shower stall. Two people could fit in the bathroom, but it would be a tight squeeze.

Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
Dan could not discern any more details about the van, but he saw no movement around it, or anywhere else. The light was fading even more now, and it was getting harder to see.

Nitro walked back into the main room, his leg showing no signs of the earlier damage. Meanwhile, Doc aided Sally when she left the bathroom and guided her back to the main room.

In the ranger station-
"All right," said Mutt. "You girls go up next."

Julie looked uncertain, not wanting to be alone with Deadeye and Ghost, even if it was only for a minute. Katarina stepped forward and climbed the ladder first. Nitro, Doc, and Sally returned from the bedroom.

Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
Dan continued his rounds. All remained quiet so far.

On the roof-
Ghost took Katarina by the arm and pulled her up onto the roof.

"Thank you," she said, smiling at him. "Maybe a little later we go back down together, yes?"

"Yeah," said Ghost, grinning back.

Ghost took a good look around, but he couldn't see a thing. Deadeye, however, had much better eyesight. "Movement near the van!" he reported into his radio.

"I'll check it out," said Ghost, running over to the zipline. ""Cover me!" He slid down the line with ease.

Katarina couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Nonetheless, she shivered and hugged herself.

In the ranger station-
"Yes, be careful, Dan!" said Julie. "I'll get the blankets." She rooted through one of the cabinets and pulled them out.

"Nitro, let's go," said Mutt. The two shaven-headed men ran out onto the balcony.

Doc wrapped the blankets around himself, then lifted Sally up. his muscles straining. He placed her over his shoulder in a fireman's carry and brought her up the ladder to the roof, where Deadeye and Katarina were waiting.

Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
Dan had a flashlight in his toolkit, so he didn't need to go back inside to get one. With the light in one hand and his pistol in the other, he hurriedly descended the stairs to ground level. Mutt and Nitro emerged from the door. "Stay on the balcony and cover me," said Mutt to Nitro, who moved to the southwest corner and held his assault rifle ready. Mutt raced downstairs.

Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Mutt caught up with Dan at the bottom of the steps, gripping his M-16/203 tightly in both hands. "Stay back," he said to Dan. "This could be dangerous for you. I'll make sure it's safe."

The green pickup truck was parked where Dan had left it, near the stairs. Both he and Julie had keys to it.

Mutt shrugged. "Your funeral," he said. He and Dan ran towards the van.

Mutt arrived at the van a few seconds ahead of Dan and circled around the back. Dan got there shortly afterwards, around the front, just in time to see Mutt sliding the van's side door closed. There was no sign of anyone else near the van. "False alarm," said Mutt into his radio. "Must have been a wild animal. We're heading back." He nodded to Dan. "Let's go."
Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
Nitro heard Mutt on the radio and went back inside.

Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Ghost emerged from the darkness and reached the bottom of the stairs.

In the ranger station-
Julie looked up when Nitro came back inside. "It was nothing," he told her. "You can go on up now."

"Um, okay," said Julie. She too scaled the ladder.

On the roof-
Deadeye continued to scan the western horizon through his scope, even though Mutt had given the all clear.

Doc gave Sally a quick kiss as he set her down carefully on her own feet. "Allow me," he said, laying out a blanket and then helping her sit on it. He wrapped another over her shoulders, and the third blanket he gave to Katarina.

Katarina smiled at Sally. "Yes, is getting cold," she said, shivering and snuggling into the blanket as she wrapped herself in it and sat down beside Sally.

Julie climbed onto the roof and made her way over to Sally and Katarina, but remained on her feet. "Hey, ladies," she said.

Realizing that if he drew attention to the women Mutt and the others would probably just kill everyone, Dan decided to keep his mouth shut. As much as he wanted to help them, the women were on their own...At least for now. Turning back, Dan heads towards his truck to check its tires and such to make sure there weren't any visible problems, before heading back upstairs.

Mutt pulled out his radio as he jogged with Dan on his way back to the station. "Ghost, meet me at our pickup truck," he said into it. Ghost stopped near the bottom of the stairs and headed off to the east of the station, where the white pickup truck was parked. Mutt ran past the stairs leading back up and joined him. Dan inspected his and Julie's green pickup, which was still parked near the base of the stairs. The tire pressure looked good on all four tires, and everything seemed in working order.

In the ranger station-
Nitro followed Julie up the ladder, admiring her rear while he climbed.

On the roof-
Katarina peered out into the night, but it was too dark to see anything. Julie couldn't see a thing either, but Doc had good night vision. He sat down beside Sally and put an arm around her, smiling. "Everything's going to be all right," he assured her.

Nitro hauled himself onto the roof and took a look around, but saw nothing of interest.

After checking over his truck, Dan slowly made his way back towards the stairs. He tried to go as slow a possible without looking suspicious, To hopefully see what Mutt was up to. If Mutt and Ghost were leaving this might be their chance to take care of Nitro and the other one.

With the cold biting at her wearly body, Sally sunk deeply into her blanket. As she did, she reached into her waist band and pulled out the Sig Saur she had snuck from Felicia's body. She moved the gun into her lap. Seeing Julie arrive on the roof: "Come on over and get warm, Julie."

Dan slowly climbed the stairs, taking his time as he went. He could see the shadowy figures of Mutt and Ghost at their white pickup truck. "Get in," said Mutt, unlocking the doors. "I'll drive." Both men got into the truck and the engine started up. The headlights came on.

Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
By the time Dan reached the balcony, the white pickup had pulled out and was now rolling away to the west. It went around the back of the van and into the woods beyond it.
On the roof-
Doc kissed Sally on the neck, and then nuzzled her ear.
Julie nodded and huddled close to Sally and Katarina for warmth. "Thanks," she said.

Deadeye kept watching the woods to the west through his scope. Nitro stood near the east side of the roof, his back to the edge and his AK-47 in his hands. He looked carefully around.

"Mutt and I are going to patrol the area," said Ghost's voice from the radios. "We'll be back in a while. Hold down the fort while we're gone, and stay in touch."

"On my way!" called Doc. He reluctantly tore himself away from Sally and climbed back down the ladder.

Deadeye continued to peer through the scope, but he saw nothing of note. Neither did NItro.

Katarina looked around and gasped suddenly. She jumped to her feet, pointing to the south. "I see some of them coming!" she cried. "They're a long way off and moving slow, but they're coming."

"Where?" asked Deadeye, turning to look. "I don't see nothin'."

Julie looked too, but she couldn't see anything either.
In the ranger station-
Doc reached the bottom of the ladder and walked over to the chair where Dan sat.

"You better not be pullin' our legs," said Deadeye. "Where are they? It's too damn dark to see."

"I still can't see them," said Julie, "but I believe you, Katarina."
In the ranger station-
Doc leaned in close to Dan and whispered to him.

Dan gives in to Doc, "Fine we'll do this your way...for now. I'm trusting you but I will not put those womens lives in anymore danger for the sake of your conscience. For now lets handle these things but just remember, If it gets dangerous with these guys THEY WILL DIE!" With that said Dan gets up and heads back outside looking towards the south, "Nitro, You should get down here and guard the stairs. Your rifle is better equiped to that then anybody elses weapon. Me and Deadeye should be able to start picking them off soon."

"Don't stay down here too long, and be careful," said Doc. "Retreat to the roof if they get close." He climbed back up the ladder.

On the roof-
Deadeye swiveled his scope around some more. "I see 'em!" he shouted. Taking careful aim, he began firing on the zombies to the south, scoring only a single hit. That zombie fell, destroyed for good. "Got one!"

NItro looked around desperately. "Where, where?" he said. "I still can't see them. It's too damn dark!" He called down to Dan. "My rifle will do a lot more good from up here on the roof!"

Julie drew her bow and took an arrow from her quiver, but she still couldn't find any targets to shoot.

Katarina hugged Sally as Doc emerged onto the roof.
Outside the ranger station, balcony level-
Dan still couldn't see anything, even with the flashlight.

After all she had been through. After all she had lost, the sight of the zombies did little to unnerve Sally. The girls in the van were free and this may be the only chance she had to free herself from these monsters.
Hugging Katarina back he whispered to her: "The girls got free. This may be our chance. Are you armed?"

[OOC: Is there is a chance of Deadeye or other hearing her, Sally will not whisper to Katarina.]

Deadeye reeled in shock when he saw the zombies up close through his scope, overwhelmed by terror. He was certain that he would die here. Screaming in horror, he grabbed up his rifle and ran to the zipline, sliding down to the ground where the growing darkness concealed him.

Nitro still couldn't see the oncoming threat. "Hey, Mutt!" he said into his radio. "We've got unfriendly company here! Could use some backup!"

"Okay, we'll head back," replied Mutt.

Katarina managed to keep her wits about her. She shook her head no in response to Sally's whisper. "Sally, I afraid," she said.

Julie kept looking around to the south. "I see them!" she shouted at last, raising her bow. She supressed a shiver and nocked her first arrow, taking aim at one of the zombies' heads. She fired one arrow after another, but they all missed due to the poor lighting.

Doc moved over to Sally's side with his pistol out, but it was too dark for him to see the zombies.
Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Dan hurried down the steps and soon reached the ground. He rushed over to the green pickup truck, which was parked underneath the ranger station. However, it was facing north. He would need to turn it around in order to shine the headlights on the zombies, and he couldn't tell how close they were since he hadn't seen them.

Dan starts up the truck and gets it turned around. With the lights illuminating the zombies Dan feels a shiver of fear but manages to remain in control.

Sally steadied herself and took aim. She fired off 5 shots, with only one of them hitting. The unnatrual beast was wounded,but it relentlessly continued onward.

On the roof-
Katarina nodded and helped support Sally, not able to do much else. Julie fired five more arrows into the night, again without any luck. Two rifle shots from the north rang out, and the zombie Sally had wounded was hit in the head and finished off.

Nitro couldn't see the zombies until they reached the ranger station, at the same moment that the headlights illuminated them. Neither could Doc. Seven of them remained, and four reached the area at the bottom of the stairs. The other three were not far behind. They stumbled out of the dark and were now visible in all their gory undead glory.

Nitro had seen many of these things before and was getting used to them. Doc, however, was deeply disturbed by the unnatural ghouls, though he managed to keep most of his fears at bay.
Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Dan unlocked the driver's side door of his pickup truck, slipped behind the wheel, and started up the engine. Once it roared to life, he pulled out and performed a three-point turn so that it was facing south. The arriving zombies were caught in his headlights and rendered fully visible. The sight almost startled him, but he was made of stern stuff. The fact that they were only a few yards away was still alarming.

Sally raised her pistol again, took aim and fired. The round pierced the zombies skull, blowing it's eye socket apart but not doing enough damage to drop it.

On the roof-
Sally heard a vehicle approaching from the west and slightly to the north over the noise of the gunfire.

Another distant shot rang out, and one of the zombies fell, its head blown to bits. Nitro pointed his AK-47 at one of the zombies at the bottom of the stairs and put a bullet in its brain, wounding it but failing to stop it. Julie cut loose with an arrow, shooting the zombie Sally had hit through the eye and finishing it. Nitro fired again, but the recoil knocked his bullet way off the mark.

"Good shooting!" cheered Katarina. The two remaining zombies at the base of the stairs continued walking underneath it, apparently in pursuit of the truck that was backing away from them. No new zombies emerged from the darkness, but the other three were still visible and getting closer.
Outside the ranger station, ground level-
Dan backed up the truck until he was behind the station. He could now see headlights approaching from the west, and soon Mutt's pickup truck reached an intersection with a dirt track heading east and west some forty to fifty yards north of the station. Deadeye could also be seen in the light of the headlights, crouching by the road and sniping at the zombies. The two surviving zombies that had reached the station continued to walk under it, but they couldn't reach him yet. He could safely halt here long enough to fire a shot.

Dan Halts the truck and rolls down his window. Once it was down he aimed his rifle at the nearest zombies head and fired hitting it dead on and blowing a massive hole in it.

ooc- I wasn't certain if zombies are subject to impales so I just rolled as if it wasn't

On the roof-
"I'm Nitro," said Nitro. "Deadeye already went down there. He should have stayed up here, though."

Sally reloaded the pistol that only had one round in the chamber, sliding in a full magazine. Her other pistol still had two bullets left, including one in the chamber. The truck she had heard sounded like it could be Mutt's truck, but she couldn't be sure. Julie shouldered her bow and drew her Glock. Though she wasn't as good a shot with it, she could fire faster and do more damage once the ghouls stepped into the light again. Now that Dan had backed up, the headlights no longer lit up the area south of the ranger station. The last three zombies finally closed the distance and reached the bottom of the stairs, and all of them were now visible. Katarina shivered in fear.
North of the ranger station-
The wounded zombie advanced towards the truck. Deadeye took another shot at it from back near the intersection to the north, but the bullet zipped over its head. Mutt and Ghost saw the thing in the light of the other truck's headlights. Mutt reeled, the sight too much for even his hardened mind. He snapped, screaming in terror. Ghost was unaffected, and he climbed out of the truck, taking cover behind it and readying his AK-47.

Dan watched with satisfaction as the head of the creature he had shot exploded, but one more continued inexorably towards him and was now just five yards away.

"Sorry, Nitro. Slip of the tongue" Sally said with a wink. Sally raised her pistol and fired. The round struck home, barely. The round stuck with devestating force, however, the beast continued onward.

Dan draws his pistol as the last zombie draws near and puts a bullet right in its head stopping the monster dead in its tracks. Once that is taken care of he begins looking for anymore that may be out there.

North of the ranger station-
Ghost fired at one of the zombies at the bottom of the stairs with his AK-47. The light from the station helped him to see, and he drilled it for heavy damage. It collapsed in an unmoving heap. Deadeye took aim at one of the other two, but again his shot was off. Mutt continued to scream.

The zombie Dan had shot fell dead less than fifteen feet away. The only ones visible, at least in that direction, were the ones at the bottom of the stairs, and they fell in short order.
On the roof-
The zombie Sally had shot fell to the ground, but it began to crawl up the stairs, lagging behind the one still on its feet. Nitro shot that one through the eye, dropping it. Doc took a shot at the last ghoul, but his initial shot missed. Julie fired too, and she blew its brains out.

Katarina exhaled with relief. "You did it!" she said, hugging Julie and Sally.

"Got one of those for me too?" asked Nitro wth a leer.

Unfortunately due to the poor lighting Dan wasn't able to spot anything. Dan put the truck in gear and headed back towards the station.

North of the ranger station-
"Chill out, man," said Ghost to Mutt as Dan drove south. "It's over." Then something caught his eye, and he shuddered. "Spoke too damn soon!" He quivered like jelly, but his instincts took over before he could think anything through. "Kill the bastard!" He raised his AK-47 and pointed it to the north, then fired twice. The first shot missed due to the poor lighting, and the recoil from the second caused him to fumble and drop his rifle. He bent down and retrieved it.

Deadeye scanned the northern horizon. "There he is!" he called, taken aback by the thing, but he had seen so many of them that one more made little difference. He took aim and opened fire on it, but the darkness caused all of his shots to miss.

Outside the ranger station-
Dan pulled up near the bottom of the stairs leading back up to the ranger station, in the same place he had parked the truck before.
On the roof-
Katarina grinned. "You shoot so good, Julie!" she said. Then the shooting and yelling started afresh. "Another one?!"

Nitro whirled around to the north and looked out over the rapidly darkening landscape, but he may as well have been blind.

"I don't see it," said Doc, also looking in that direction.

Julie holstered her pistol and drew her bow again as she turned around and looked out. "Thanks, Katarina," she said, "but I was more lucky than anything. And I can't shoot what I can't see."

Dan is shaken by the sight of the zombie but holds himself together and runs up the stairs to the station. Let those bastards deal with it, or more preferably it with them. They could always kill it after anyways.

North of the ranger station-
Ghost resumed firing with his retrieved AK-47. One of his shots came close, but the first couple missed. Deadeye fired too, but it was too dark to line up a good shot. Ghost continued shooting, but he missed badly due to his increasing panic, and Deadeye wasn't doing any better.

"It's getting too close!" cried Ghost. "We have to get out of here!" He hopped in the back of the truck. "Mutt! Get us out of here!"

Mutt came to his senses at just the right time and began to pull out. Deadeye climbed into the bed of the truck too, and Mutt turned right onto the road, passing the van before turning around and bringing its headlights to bear on the zombie, which was now only 30 yards or so away from the ranger station and closing in slowly.

Inside the ranger station-
Dan climbed up the stairs and made it inside the ranger station. The ladder leading up to the roof through the trapdoor was nearby.

On the roof-
Nitro still couldn't see the zombie, and neither could Doc nor Julie.

"I don't know," said Katarina to Sally. "I don't want to know." Then the skinheads' pickup truck passed by the station on the west side and turned around, revealing the undead thing in all its horror for everyone to see.

Outside the ranger station-
When Mutt stopped the truck west of the station, Ghost took aim again. He fired and missed. Deadeye also took a shot from the bed of the truck, easily hitting it in the head now that the headlights were illuminating it. The bullet blasted the creature's skull to bits, and it fell.

Inside the ranger station-
Dan finished chambering the next round and loading in a fresh bullet, then climbed the ladder to the roof.
On the roof-
Nitro was unfazed by the sight of the ghoul, and Doc also kept it together. Katarina finally started to calm down, especially when she saw how easily it was destroyed. Julie was not afraid - at least not of the zombie.

"Nice shooting!" called Nitro.

Dan reached the top of the ladder and emerged onto the roof.

As Dan watched, Deadeye hopped out of the pickup truck and jogged to the stairs. He hurried up them, reloading his sniper rifle as he did so. Mutt drove off to the west again, with Ghost riding in the bed of the truck, and it was soon lost from sight in the woods.

"Hey, Dan," said Julie. "Glad you made it back up here in one piece."

Deadeye climbed back up onto the roof using the ladder leading up to the trap door. "I'm back," he said.

"Why'd you go down there in the first place?" asked Nitro, reloading his AK-47. "You had a better shot from up here, and it's much less risky."

"Yeah, I won't be doing that again."

Doc put an arm around Sally. "Sally, are you okay? You haven't said much."

Everyone was strangely silent for some reason. Deadeye lay down on the roof and set up his rifle again. He began scanning the area with his scope.

Tearing himself away from Julie, Dan heads back down the stairs to continue his shift on watch. He needed to get away from everyone and think up a plan to get them all out of this mess.

Dan climbed back down the ladder into the ranger station. The sky was getting even darker now, and it was getting harder for everyone to see the station's surroundings.

"Dan, be careful!" called Julie after him.

Dan made it to the bottom of the ladder and was now inside the ranger station. The stairs led down from the balcony to ground level.

"Mutt already decided on the shifts earlier," said Nitro. "Three watches, three hours each. First watch is from 2000 hours to 2300, so we've got some time before it starts." He checked his wristwatch. "It's almost a quarter to eight now. Dan, you offered to stand first watch, and Deadeye will watch with you. Ghost and I have the second watch, from 2300 to 0200. Then Mutt and Doc have the last watch, from 0200 to 0500. That'll allow us to hit the road at first light."

"I'll help out on first watch too," said Julie. "I'm still too scared to sleep. I'll go work on those arrows." She climbed down the ladder.

Sally couldn't see anything in the deepening gloom, and neither could Katarina. Deadeye scanned the horizon without noticing any details, and Nitro couldn't make out anything in the dark.

In the ranger station-
Julie sat down, collected the wood she had gathered during the day, the metal arrowheads, the feathers, and some tools, and began to make a new arrow, but her fears were too distracting and she made no progress. She looked up when Dan joined her. "Hey, Dan," she said. "If you want to help, I can teach you what to do." She waved him over, glancing out the window, but it was too dark to see much.

Dan silently follows Julie downstairs toward their truck. While they walk he tries to make a mental list of all the places the women might have stopped at to hide out in the direction they ran. With things the way they were, and the time of day, Dan prayed they would be smart enough to seek shelter somewhere and not try to run the woods at night.

On the roof-
Sally couldn't quite get a read on Doc, and it was still too dark for her to see anything. She also couldn't hear anything out there.

Katarina looked around, but the darkness shrouded everything from her view. She also heard nothing.

Doc could not see anything in the night, but he did hear something. He leaned over to whisper in Sally's ear.
Deadeye looked around through his scope, but all he saw were shadows. He did seem to hear something, and he swept his rifle scope back and forth to the west.

Nitro neither saw nor heard a thing.

"Mutt, you going somewhere?" came Ghost's voice on the radio.

"You can speak freely," said Nitro into his own radio. "Those rangers went on patrol in their pickup, so you may run into them out there."

"Just chasing down Lara," said Mutt. "Raquel is already secured."

"All right," replied Ghost. "I've got Zoe right here. Over and out."

"Okay, I stay up here," said Katarina. "I just miss sleeping in real bed." She climbed into one of the sleeping bags, keeping her shoes and her clothes on. She lay on her side and closed her eyes, as if not being able to see would make everything go away.

At the bottom of the ladder, Doc set Sally down on her feet and took her arm, leading her towards the bathroom.

The building danger of the situation around her hightened Sally's senses. She was hyper aware of all sounds around her.
"Thanks, honey" Sally said to Doc as he set her down. She leaned on him as she walked towards the restroom. Quietly, he whispered: "What is our plan, Doc?"

On the roof-
Nitro walked over to the sleeping bag and bent down. He reached out and began to caress Katarina's shoulders.

"Please, not now," she mumbled. "I need sleep."

"Hey, I got needs too," said Nitro. He started to unzip the bag. "You know, I think there's room in here for both of us."

"Please, let me sleep first. You can have me after. I make it worth your while." She winked at him.

"All right," said Nitro. He zipped the bag back up. " I'll be looking forward to it. Sweet dreams." He kissed her on the lips and then returned to his post.

Katarina exhaled with relief and rolled over on her side.

In the ranger station-
Doc put a finger to his lips and helped Sally into the bathroom. As they walked, Sally heard the exchange between Katarina and Nitro above them. Doc turned on the sink's faucet and let the water run.

"There," he whispered. "Now nobody will overhear us. Dan and Julie went out to go track down the girls before Mutt and Ghost can find them. The rangers will take them somewhere safe and then return, and nobody will be the wiser."

A rifle shot suddenly rang out. Even with the water running, Sally could tell it came from the northwest.

"What was that shot?" crackled Mutt's voice on the radio.

"But what about the Rangers? I don't think Mutt will just let them go on their way, or let us stay with them." Sally said nervously. "Mutt makes me nervous. What if he decides we wants me too and tries to hurt you?"

Katarina sat bolt upright when she heard the shot, folding her arms across her chest and shivering.

"It wasn't us," replied Nitro into his radio. "Everything's quiet here."

"Ghost, did you fire?" asked Mutt's voice. "Ghost? You there? Will you stop screwing Zoe for one second and answer me?"

Deadeye scanned the darkness in the direction from which the shot had come, using his rifle's scope, but he couldn't make out any details. Nitro couldn't see anything out there.

In the bathroom-
Sally and Doc heard the exchange over Doc's radio. Doc took Sally in his arms and held her tight. "That's not going to happen, Sally," he said. "Mutt may be many things, but he's not stupid. With so few of us left, he can't afford to take any chances. He's obsessed with tracking Lara down because she killed his brother, and he's not going to be able to find her because the rangers will get her to safety. And if he does turn stupid for some reason, I won't let things get that far. I just don't know what else to do other than lie low and wait. Do you have any ideas?"

"I'm not sure what to do right now either." Sally said. "From the sound of it, things are going bad out there. If it comes down to it, I'll be using these .45's to help save the girls and the rangers and I know you'll be right there with me."

Sally thought for a moment. "You know, I have some grenades in my bag. We should keep them close in case things get ugly?"

"Nitro and Deadeye," said Mutt on the radio. "Get your asses over to that small house to the northwest. Doc and Sally, hold down the fort."

"On our way," replied Nitro. He clipped his radio onto his belt and climbed down the ladder. Deadeye slung his rifle on his back and slid down the zipline, landing like a cat at the bottom.

Katarina, now alone, got out of her sleeping bag and looked around nervously.

In the bathroom-
"Roger that," Doc replied into his radio after he and Sally heard the exchange. He looked deep into her eyes. "I agree, things are getting bad out there, but I don't want you to get hurt. It's too dangerous. If we make a move and things go wrong...The only protection you have is that you're one of us. Do you have any idea what they'll do to us if they think we betrayed them?"

Sally could hear one of the skinheads climbing down the ladder and entering the main room of the ranger station.

Hearing the others come down Sally gave Doc a wink, then said loudly as she shut off the water: "Thanks for the help, Doc. I can't wait for this damn legg to heal so I don't have to gimp around everywhere."

To Nitro and Deadeye: "Be careful out there, guys"

Once Deadeye and Nitro were out of the ranger station, Sally turned to Doc; "Did you get the channel the Rangers radio is operating on?"

Once Katarina heard Nitro leave the station, she carefully climbed down the ladder.

In the bathroom-
Sally heard Nitro clomp down the stairs. She also heard Katarina come down from the roof, her high heels clacking on the hardwood floor.

"No, I don't know what channel they're using," said Doc. "We can only tune my radio to one frequency at a time anyway, and it's probably better to monitor ours. It would be nice if we could talk to the rangers, but we didn't think of that before they left."

"Scared, but okay," said Katarina. When Sally mentioned that the frequency might be written down somewhere near the shortwave radio, Katarina searched the radio desk, but she came up empty handed.

In the ranger station-
"Sure," said Doc, stepping out onto the balcony.

Katarina watched as Sally searched the radio desk thoroughly. Not only did she find a sticky note with the ranger station's frequency on it, she also found a manual for the radio in one of the drawers. On the inside front cover, a list of frequencies were written in pen. Of particular interest were the frequencies of the Nebraska State Police and of Warren Air Force Base.

Outside the ranger station, baclony level-
Doc began to walk around the balcony level, looking around carefully. but it was so dark that he couldn't see a thing out there, the moon having slipped behind the clouds.

Sally tuned the radio to the Ragers frequency and listed into the channel. She quickly wrote tore the cover off the manual and scanned around for a portable or handheld radio she could take to the roof.

In the ranger station-
There was a dock designed to accomodate two handheld radios, but Sally could see that it was empty. The radios must have been the ones the rangers had taken. Sally tuned to the rangers' frequency and listened, but it was quiet apart from the gentle hiss of static. The only portable radio in the station was apparently Doc's.

With the frequencies in hand, Sally moved to the ladder: "Doc, Katarina, let's get to the roof. We can use Doc's radio to listen in to what's going on out there. In fact, ask Mutt for a status report, will you Doc?" Sallly began to climb the ladder to the roof.

In the ranger station-
Katarina helped Sally to scale the ladder from below, supporting her legs. As she climbed, she heard an explosion in the distance.

Doc rushed into the station and took out his radio. "Mutt, what the hell was that?" he asked. There was no reply.

On the roof-
Sally made it onto the roof with Katarina's help.

On the top of the roof, Sally could not see anything in the darkness, but her ears made up for her lack of eye sight.

On the roof-
Sally clambered onto the rooftop. She could see nothing of note when looking around, but her hearing did tell her that the explosion had come from the northwest. It had sounded like a grenade.

Katarina climbed up onto the roof behind Sally. "What's happening, Sally?" she asked, her face lined with worry.

In the ranger station-
Doc went over to the bottom of the ladder behind Katarina. "Nobody's answering on the radio!" he called up.

"It sounded like a grenade blast!" Sally said with worry. "God, I hoep Dan and Julie are okay!"

"Try and raise them on the radio again, Doc"

On the roof-
"Me too," said Katarina with a shiver. "And the other girls." She looked around, but couldn't see a thing through the tears forming in her eyes.

Doc reached the top of the ladder and stood on the roof. "Can anyone read me?" he said into his radio.

"Nitro here," replied Nitro's voice. "Deadeye and I are with Julie, but no sign of the others yet. Damned if I know what's going on."
