Frustrated with his inability to carry out his plans and Himmler's hostility towards him, Fischer agonized about his future. He knew that during the itme he spent at the manor, he was close to something more powerful than anything he had ever dealt with. He had been hoping to go out in blaze of glory, tricking most of the foreigners into standing next to him while he pulled the pins on concealed grenades so that the treasure could be split between only Yelena, who would save the Jewish family he treasured, and Jager, who would use it for the nation he so loved.
The only thing that still interested him was the remarkable armor of that spider. If it was light enough for an animal to move around under but strong enough to shed machine fire, then it must have been a chemical miracle. Synthesis in the laboratory could provide a truly practical form of body armor for German infantry, making them as unstoppable as armored Teutonic knights of bygone eras and doing away with trench warfare forever. He knew he didn't have the skills or resources to either capture a spider or analyze one's shell, but he decided that if he continued to pursue his SS career, he might one day find himself in a position to launch such a project, or at least convince someone who could.
With his record of dutiful service, fanatical support for the Nazi ideals, and a few planned public criticisms of inferior races, Georg managed to convince his superiors that marrying a Jew had been a youthful indiscretion of which he had repented deeply, and begged to continue his atonement by carrying on the battle. In his ensuing career, his ideas about capturing one of the great spiders would grow to an obsession.
