Combat Example - Quick Play
Hey. I'm interested in being the Keeper for a quick, less than one-shot one-shot, of some investigators versus some monster/s or beast/s of some kind. Just a quick battle, until one side wins to practice Keeper-ing battles, which I haven't had the chance to do yet. Would anyone be interested in this? Your characters wouldn't really matter save for their stats and their name, and everything could be done in a couple of pages. You could choose the lay-out and situation to. Battle in the swamp against some Shub-Niggurath cultists with only a couple pistols between the bunch of you? Ambushed in the sewers by a pack of ghouls? Something involving a Gug would be fun. Or we can do something typical, like trapped in a house with hordes of zombies trying to get in. So anyways, would anyone be interested in this?

Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
I need to learn combat so I'll join.
I vote dealing with a Flying Polyp from the back of a 20s truck with a machinegun in the back! Oh, I don't want the difficulty high!

Is it bad that I listen to this about ten times a day?

Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
I'd be interested in giving it a try. Which system/version of CoC would you be using for this?
Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
I'd be interesting in trying this out too. I could always use more combat practice. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been insanely busy lately (or possibly just insane ). How does character creation work? Obviously if we build our characters in the traditional way we wouldn't be choosing skills with no use whatsoever in a combat situation. Are we going to get pre-gens?

Sixth edition BRP. Character creation is up to you I guess, unless you want pre-gens, which I don't mind doing. I'm actually warming up to the pre-gen idea, since I was thinking of having a big binder full of pre-gen character sheets and re-use them multiple times in one-shots or something similar to that.
What combat situation would you guys like? I'm not sure if that Flying Polyp-machine gun idea was a joke, but last night I read all the stats related to it and it'd be fun, even if extremely hard. I was thinking of a WWI situation with some soldiers in a truck with a machine-gun mounted to the back, fleeing for their lives from a Flying Polyp giving chase. Flying Polyps are insanely hard to kill. They take minimum damage from all weapons, then you have to factor in their 4-point skin armour. That means that 2d6+3 would only do 1 damage. 2 with impale.

How about a three way battle: Investigators (the PCs) vs. cultists vs. the big nasty they've just summoned? The monster doesn't care who it squishes, as investigators and cultists taste the same. The cultists will battle the investigators, but also the monster once it turns on them. And we investigators will have to carefully balance which threat is greater and act accordingly.

I like the sound of that. What creature do you suggest? How about deep in the woods, and a Dark Young has just been summoned? The investigators arrive on the scene just as it appears. Cultists realize their mistake.
Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
Sounds good to me. Three way battles can be fun! There was a great one at the climax of Chapter 1 of Zombie Apocalypse, but that one had a much larger scale than what we're aiming for. There were about 250 combatants, with 200 of them zombies (to start with -there were more zombies once humans started dropping. ).

Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
I have v.5.6 (BRP), but I'm pretty sure all the editions have been the same since like 2nd.
I'll put a character together tomorrow.
-How do you want us to handle dice rolls?
-Should we post our characters here, PM them to you, or what?

Of course! There's a surprising amount of people on this board that are Vancouverites. It's pretty awesome.trixie wrote:Hidey ho neighbor-o! (Vancouver huh....shweeeeet)

If it isn't too late, I'd be keen to join. I'll get a character ready just in case.

Use http://www.invisiblecastle.com and link the rolls in your post, or integrate them into your writing.MysticalNun wrote:Still need to know . . .

I'll probably make pre-gens and post them up on here, if you don't mind. If you want a particular gender or character type, just post it.
Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
A pre-gen is good with me. You do the work! ha ha (j/k of course)
Can you give me a chick though?

Pre-gens are fine with me too. Any concept and gender should do just dandy.OathinBlood wrote:Use http://www.invisiblecastle.com and link the rolls in your post, or integrate them into your writing.

Re: Combat Example - Quick Play
Right. Here are the pre-gen occupations. There's five of them - a magazine editor, policeman, police detetctive, journalist, and photographer. The only female is the journalist. Although there's no real story behind this scenario, you can assume that the magazine editor, photographer, and journalist caught scent of the cult worshipping Shub-Niggurath. They got the police detective involved, who got the policeman involved. The final fight scene which we're doing is the apex of their discoveries. The most combat-ready of them all is the policeman, though the police detective is armed as well. The others may or may not have weapons. I'm still filling out online character sheets which I'll link you to soon. I'm fleshing them all out in the hope that they'll get more use in another scenario of mine someday, if they survive. You should start claiming yours now. If none of them really appeal to you, tell me and I'll try to figure something out.
