Modern US Scenario

Post by thewhatchamacallit »

I want to run another game. Who would be up for a modern adventure? You play who ever you want, in the small town of International Falls in Minnesota (so I'm looking for a lot of US and Canadian content).

I think 4-8 players would be good and the campaign will have endless potential to keep snowballing, as long as there's interest it'll keep going.

Well, y'know I'm up for it. That goes without saying.

Though I'm sure you've had more than enough of me over-posting in all the games you're in so feel free to say ... "I need a little space."

I'd probably play a cop or an armed security guard. Someone who's led a very boring life... Best not to dwell on it until I know whether or not you're sick of me.
Is it bad that I listen to this about ten times a day?

Town cop or statey would work well. In truth I wouldn't mind having the whole crew from MoN or my WH join in given the great camaraderie we've all had at the other games, but beggars can't be choosers, eh?

Edit- Plus since it's a border town you could easily play an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer or OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) constable as well.

Kewl. So many choices, so little time.

Hmm... I wanna play someone very mundane. I've got Noirish jazz singers, Russian aviator / race car driver / con men ... true, I've also got a Chinese wilderness photographer and a British priest, but I do like to get back to basics and really enjoy the oddness.

Shame it's not an apoc game ... apoc games are the only time when being the general store (or supermarket) clerk can come in handy. I am thinking of doing the whole clerk thing, actually ... since it's America I could be handy with a gun as part of a hobby.

But *shudder* I can't be low on Edu! I thrive on skill points. But then again, how does University education improve your Track again?

Perhaps a survivalist ... that'd be amusing.

What kinda adventure will it be? A strictly local event or international? NPC-heavy (like Aartri Asylum - where having close family won't be a burden to the Keeper) or NPC-lite (like Hurricane Cthulhu where a sense of isolation is utmost)? Can you give us a hint at what themes will be running?

Sorry to be a pain but I'm kinda unsure as to what I should be, exactly. Hmm...

You can play anyone, any career you can imagine any style you enjoy, the campaign will naturally wrap around the characters, involving them not because of who they are, but where they are. As it developes it'll sprawl into both "a oh, no, how did we get involved in this again," thing as well as a "if we don't stop it who can?!" kind of thing. So really it's wide open, it's all about the choices.

btw, you can be a Canadian and know how to use hand-guns, x-bows, rifles, shotguns, etc. I assure you

Yeah, I just assumed Canada was like Australia ... oh, you can KNOW how to use a variety of guns till your heart's content, but you can't obtain them.

Hmm ... well, as much as I love socially-based characters, I always play them. Always (Father John not as much as the others). But I'm worried that if I play someone who doesn't at least have a lot of psychology skill ranks - such as Susan, I feel naked and confused.

Doesn't help that the only new character I've thought of, of late, that Fast Talking, Persuasive physician who's decent in a punch-up - who's also quiet and therefore MUCH different from my other characters - wouldn't really work so good here. However, I suppose that it is possible that instead of a physician (medicine never really entered into the idea, really), he could be an accountant, IRS, or perhaps, better yet, a lawyer.

Hmm, could even be in middle-management. Have a lot of knowledge-based skills, decent in a bar fight, with psych, fast talk, and persuade and not a lot else. That'd be heaps different from my high psych, physical skilled girl, my socialising, mechanical skilled boy, my high seduction girl and my multi-talented priest, right? Right?

But then, I'd need to think up a job description where someone could be conservative enough to wear the outfit. I so love that picture...

Or I could bite the bullet, conserve that character in case one of the others die, and try my damndest to come up with a new concept...

Whaddaya think?

Frankly I think you should be an Aussie who immigrated. You bring whatever skills you had with you and maybe pick up a few points in other area knowledge Minnesota so you don't get lost while driving.

Just the other day I heard a Toronto teacher with an Australian accent on the radio, so it's not too far-fetched.

Hell I'd like to see you as a female boxer or soccer player, maybe even a dog-walker or bus driver or scuba instructor, sky is the limit

Best approach- What did you always want to be but haven't gotten or didn't get the chance to be.

Hey, that way I can call things rubbish bins and when I ring mother I call her mum.

I've been a bit on a Cockney bender lately. If I promise not to abuse the slang too much, can I migrate a Cockney over? That'd be fun. A cockney high schooler pain-in-the-neck who is a darling at school, an absolute angel, but who researches people, places and the like, and blackmails the poor folk whose secrets she manages to dig up. That could be fun. Someone who's parents are far too nice and she's in the whole rebellion stage. A 15-year-old looking for trouble ... but only trouble she can handle ... or a 21-year-old store clerk looking for some way to make enough money to migrate back home who was a troublesome teenager...

Hehe, well, I might drop the Cockney angle, coz it'll make the naughty girl a bit cliche and stereotypical, but then, who'da thought a troublesome Australian girl (that's completely against the stereotype, that is).

Or if we're playing in a small city with a university, I could be a 2nd year Chemistry student.

And I said I was all out of ideas. :P

The town won't need a university per se you'll just be visting for a bit while away from school. Like I said whatever concept you want you can play.

Forest ranger, mill worker, taxidermist, spoiled rich kid, comic book store owner, Native American council member, pot-opt grower, exotic dancer...

I'll just keep throwing these out there until you settle on your concept.

Oh, and I'm prepared to run this as a one-on-one if need be and allow others to join as requested so once you figure things out let me know.

How about I play the role of my Uncle?

A woodsy almost-rugged professor of law (maybe I can make that a more mythos-esque topic for the sake of the story) at the University of Minnesota. Lives on a large wooded plot of land in Big Fork near Effie, population 72.

Would have academic skills as well as outdoorsy/survivalist-esque skills. Maybe would be a bit of a 'talker' character for negotiation/questioning/etc.

Well, I've settled on video store clerk or some other shop assistant-type, so I might know you when you come in ever-so-often. I'm the gum-chewing twenty-something-year-old who hates life (the generator said 28). And would you believe it, I opened up Byakhee to do a roll-up (figured if it was point-buy I could always adjust later) and I got the best stats ever.

22 Edu, 17 Int, 16 Dex, 15 Size, 11 Str, 11 Con, 10 Pow, 8 App.

Which is almost how I'd play her anyhow, though I'd probably swap Size and POW around and then swap Size with App. But still.

It also equals exactly 110, the number of points often allowed in the point-buy system. But I rolled it!

I've already whinged to thewhatchamacallit in an email that nobody'd believe me. Then I sighed in that email like a zombie from Shaun of the Dead.

Just thought I'd mope about my unrealistic yet totally real score, all the while knowing that the more I whinge about it, the least likely it seems.

Also, with occupational skill points in your game -- are we stuck with just the meager range of skills that our occupations would give us or can we spread them wherever we think we can justify?

Does he really live in Bigfork? What are the odds? He'll still need to be in International Falls visitng for the game's beginning.

Sounds good, some out of doors skills would come in handy. make him as mythos-esgque as you'd like.

Within reason, I'll reserve the right to question the choices but of course hobby skills are wide open.

I myself am not too familiar with Int'l Falls. Is there any music or arts festival there? Hell, I just made one up. He's visiting the town to support a friend of his who is involved in a local theater production of a play. (the friend could be the director, owner of the theater, actor, etc. up to you oh mighty keeper).

How would you like the character made up? Byakhee ok? Lemme know what rules to use, etc. I'll draw up a character sheet and can email it to ya.

Perfect, there's a summer festival, that means more victims...er... tourists in town.

Byakhee (or old school book workin' if you like) 110 points to distribute 3-18 in stats save for EDU 8-21+ with age.

Equipment your call, but laws will be enforced.

Even though it's a real town we'll be taking some liberties with it so flesh out your special nook of it anyway you like.

Oh and perks (see PC sheets at WH for possible perks) for those who work together to create a semi-interconnected background for the party members.

Same rules as last time? Because if so, I'm adding one attribute point to Intelligence (giving me 18) and I'm also putting 10% into Fist/Punch because here's that picture: http://www.bigfoto.com/sites/galery/peo ... -woman.jpg.

Why so much Intelligence and Education? Well, she has never bothered to gain the book smarts she'd need to get into university but takes pride in her work. It's all she has left. During high school she figured she'd be home soon, in Australia, and able to do what she had to back there, but she never got home and never settled down enough to pay attention to studies. However, with her fastidious eye for details, she's learned a lot about how to get by in her particular calling.

How do I and Jabonko's characters know each other? I might have offered myself as a tour guide. Hell, perhaps my beloved store manager or fellow store clerk is the very person Jabonko's character is here to meet. No reason why the store can't be their day job and theatre their all-encompassing hobby.
