Re: Ch.1 Rescue Plan
Gavin was thoroughly cold, wet and miserable by the time they stopped, roughly ninety minutes later. The others weren’t in great shape but at least moving kept them warm. Strapped to his sled, Gavin’s options were extremely limited.
They managed to find a spot where the pipeline and the lea of the rising hillside helped to protect them from the worst of the wind and driving snow. Pulling out the tents, they began to set up camp.

Re: Ch.1 Rescue Plan
As the others set up the tents, Randy was able to get a small fire going with the wood he had found on the way. He doubted it would last the night, but at least it might give them a warm drink before they turned in.

Re: Ch.1 Rescue Plan
With the additional fuel that Harold had found while the tents were being set up, Randy was able to build up the fire. It was sheltered from the worst of the wind by the base of the pipeline support, and he had a hot drink ready once the tents were ready. Although they were out of the wind, snow continued to fall steadily and the two tents soon resembled two white ridges up against the rock wall.
A timecheck showed it had just passed 5.00pm and the light was quickly fading.

"We need to set a watch," says Benjamin. "I'll take first watch. I'm the least exhausted among us."

"Yes, ma'am," says Benjamin, sketching a salute. "No problem."

Re: Ch.1 Rescue Plan
It was agreed that Benjamin would take the first watch, Amanda the second, Randy the third, Harold fourth and Boyd (who no doubt secretly hoped that the others would be awake again before his watch came round proper) would take the fifth and final one before the dawn. Gavin’s inflatable boot held his foot immobile (mostly) but it wasn’t designed for standing around so he wasn’t assigned a formal watch period, but he would be free to keep any of the watcher’s company, provided that he didn’t overdo it.
Rations were heated over the fire before the exhausted team turned in, leaving Benjamin to watch over them for the next two hours.
Kept company by Gavin, Benjamin’s watch was uneventful and the fire still burned strongly as Amanda took over from him. Likewise, her watch was uneventful, but the pile of logs was considerably diminished by the time Randy was roused from his tent (suspiciously early, he thought). Following the briefest of sit-reps, he found himself staring out into the black night. The wind had dropped somewhat, but the snow still fell, deadening the sound all around.
