Ch.1 Rescue Plan

October 1986. Contact with Exxon Pumping Station #31 in British Columbia has been lost and a rescue team has been assembled.

The environmental activist group, North Wind, had threatened to bring operations to a halt. Could they be behind this sudden communication failure, or is something else going on?

Poking around, Randy found a handful of felled trees, obscured by the fall of snow. They’d been there for some time as the branches on the underside were mostly dry & brittle, probably cut down to make way for the pipeline.

There’s enough wood to keep a fire going for a few hours, at least.

Randy diligently set about collecting dry branches and then building a fire somewhere on dry enough ground and not too close to the tents. Safety first!

" Good going, bit of warmth and light, might even keep some of the local wildlife at bay." Gavin nods approvingly.

Having scraped an area clear of snow by the base of one of the pylons, Randy was able to get a fire going. The heat reflected from the concrete base, bringing a little relief from the cold.

Randy looked over at Amanda. "OK Boss, come and warm yourself up. I've done everything I can think of for now to prepare for the night, so I'll join you in watching for wild animals."

Randy looked in whatever direction he thought (or guessed) the shot came from. "Not well, by the sounds of it. That cannot be a good sign, unless they've just bagged dinner." Despite his best efforts, Randy did not sound optimistic.

Looking into the distance Gavin says "Best case is that was a warning shot and scared whatever it was away. So boss" He said turning towards Amanda "How long before we go look for them?"

The single shot wasn’t repeated, leaving the three people to consider whether that was a good thing or not.

"Well, full marks for not wasting our limited supply of bullets.
I'm going to hope that was either dinner or a warning shot. If it was a warning shot, I'm not sure for what. Wolves maybe?"

Gavin nods, "That would be a good shout, a pack maybe drew out by the crash."

It occurred to Gavin that if the shot they heard had been a warning shot, which way would the wolves be moving? Could it be they were heading in their direction?

"Oh shit!! Guys , we should keep the fire burning bright. I've a horrible feeling that maybe...just maybe if that was our guys scaring off a pack of wolves.....that well er....there's a chance those mutts could be heading here..." Gavin says, head in his hands.

Randy's eyes widened. "Good point.". He found a nice branch and stuck one end into the fire to start burning. If wolves appeared, he'd wave it about to hopefully scare them away. Randy also stoked up the fire a bit to make a nice, cheery flame.

And he patted the automatic in his jacket pocket, double-checking it was still there. That was his back up plan.

Amanda... Was cautious, a single shot must be an accident, or a warning shot for am animal, nothing else could realistically be the cause. And there were three of them there, so if anyone was wounded, they could probably take care of each other.

"If for some reason they dont return for tomorrow, we will search for them. Until then, its not reasonable to move Gavin more."

Ninety minutes had passed since they had heard the gunshot and the wind had picked up considerably, causing the tents to flutter and snap like flags in a stiff breeze. The skies had darkened and the flames from their small fire flickered alarmingly, creating a surreal shadow display on the concrete pylon the supported the pipeline over their heads.

As the light was about to fail completely, three snow-shrouded figures emerged from the gloom of the riverbed. Ben, Boyd and Harold had returned.

I’m assuming that Amanda and Randy have spent at least some time outside as you’re unlikely to have taken shelter in the tents if you were concerned about wolves being around, so can I have CON checks, please?

Amanda - CON (70) 1d100
(Passed roll - no negative effects).

Gavin - I assume you stayed in the tent?

Gavin, thought about crawling about the snow....but decided against it...he wasnt about to give any wolves an easy meal. He just sat in the tent...axe in his hand...waiting...
