The Incident Room: General Chat

As a London copper, I’ve seen some pretty weird shit, but even I was taken aback when I learned that magic was actually a thing. Real, proper magic, with spells and everything!

Also, ghosts are real! And vampires, trolls, fairies, river gods… and there’s this whole subculture of weirdos and half-fae… oh, and don’t get me started on talking bloody foxes…

Shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Metropolitan Police secretly know all about this crap. There’s the Special Assessment Unit, run from this posh house called The Folly by a posh Detective Inspector called Nightingale (and his apprentice Peter Grant), that investigates supernatural crimes and other weird bollocks. And it turns out, they’re recruiting…

During both of Leo's last outings, there were moments when an intense flash would have made everyone's lives easier, so he decided to spend his study time mastering the famous werelight. He spent an inordinate amount of time in view of the entrances, hoping to get a glimpse of Varvara, but she must have been as busy as Grant and Nightingale.
Don’t forget to add an extra Magic Point for every spell mastered :)

I apologize for disappearing for a bit. I am back.

Also, while catching up with the game thread, I noticed this:

Welcome back, and welcome BoyBlunder too! Also, damn, I thought the image looked vaguely familiar but I wasn't sure where from (I actually had the comedian and actor, Omid Djalili, in mind!).

Forgive me if this has been covered before. Is there a base level for skills you don't have?
For instance, my character doesn't have medicine can I still roll it?

Not usually, but you can try ‘pushing your luck’, in which you spend 10 luck (iirc) and roll against half the associated characteristic (INT in the case of Medicine).

If no-one else has the skill, and you succeed, you can spend another 10 luck to permanently gain that skill at half the characteristic.

Just a thought, are we specifically setting these case files in any particular time within or between the books so far? I was wondering as when I mentioned that thing in my last IC post about range of magic effect and CCTV, I remembered the first chapter of Amongst Our Weapons, I wondered if the case files are being set after the events of that book or before, or otherwise...

(probably doesn't matter unless we ever want to reference specific characters like PC Danni or otherwise, considering as well when Peter's twins are born  )

The Folly expansion programme begins around the time of the graphic novel Monday, Monday; so we’re in a vaguely-defined period shortly after that.

That's very cool, thank you. A big part of the appeal of the RoL series has got to be that authentic police procedural attention to detail, spiced up obviously by the "Falcon" stuff.

Yeah, agreed. The rulebook is great for that kind of thing, plus lots of info about London and the Met for non-Londoners (especially country bumpkins like myself).

(A part of me was, in truth, attempting an acronym for (historically) oppressing the Irish, targeting minorities, and committing well concealed sex offences but that seemed in rather bad taste.)
