IC -2 - Yesterday Upon the Stair - Everyone

The Old Barnaker House. Every kid has heard about it. Everybody has a different awful story about it. All of them agree it is a very bad place.

But here you are on Halloween Night, all because of that jerk Roger. He dared you and your friends to spend the night there. You couldn’t let him bully you.You will show him who is chicken! Everybody knows that there are no such things as ghosts. Everybody knows that, right?

So get your slingshot and your pocket knife. Grab some candy and ready your Rubik’s Cube. You and your friends are going to go face-to-face with the horrors of the Barnaker House.

Hopefully you will live to see the dawn.

The Barnaker House is waiting...

"Yeah," says Harry, looking in the wreckage of the phone for a suitable fragment to pick a lock and helping to guide the others to the front door.

Louis is reluctant to drop the receiver. “But it’s my Grandma on the phone. She’s in the basement and now I’ve locked Roger in there with her. What if he hurts her too?”

The phone continues to ring, Ring ring. Ring ring. Despite the wrecked shell being far too damaged to work, and it isn't even plugged into the wall. There's no sign of other wires, tape recorders, nothing that would explain what is going on. Then Louis raises the receiver to his ear and the ringing stops.

'Louis darling, Louis my dearest. What have you done to your Grams?'.

"There must be a device inside the receiver, then," says Harry. "They do it in spy movies all the time. They're always putting bugs in phone receivers. Only instead of a bug, it's a transmitter. The receiver already has its own microphone."

“Louis whispers, “I, I think she’s okay. D-Daddy used to call her an old battle-axe so I think she’s strong enough for Roger. A-are you the rat man?” He turns to the others,
“It’s not a recording alright? It’s real.” He listens again.

"Stop talking and get that lock open!" Shirley snaps at Harry and Kyle not carrying for their technobabble.

"There's no way your grandma lives here," she keeps trying to get Louis away from the hunted phone. "But you did a good job locking Roger in the basement. Come on, let go of the phone."

"I saw something, I know it! A creepy old lady! I just wanna get out of here, we're in so much trouble!" she continues to try to get the other to the front door to try to open it while also looking over Louis.

"Did you recognise her though?" Darren asks Shirley as he walks over to the door to try and help her get the door open.

Shirley pulls on the front door, it's not locked and the handle turns freely. But the door won't open. Even with Darren's help it is just like the time with Harry. It doesn't move, it doesn't even shift the tiniest amount. And every time they tug on the door there's a flash of blue, a sheen that shimmers past the outside of the door, visible through the cracks and holes in the wood.

That voice, it's not your Grams, it's lower, gruffer, but still female. You don't know why you thought it was her. 'Louis, you've been a bad boy. Open the door and come and come downstairs to get your punishment.'

I don't know if Louis's Grams is dead but if aine says if she's dead or alive I'll let anyone make a Be a Pal roll to know that fact.

Yeah, Louis’ granny died about three years ago.

Louis says over to Shirley, “She’s not creepy, she’s my grandma, she’s here, in the basement.” Then he concentrates on the receiver and his face pales as he listens,
“Roger- is that you? W-where’s my Granny, what have you done to her?”

"See, it's coming from a transmitter," says Harry. "If that's Roger's voice, he obviously set this up as a trick. Although I never thought he was smart enough..."

Can I get Louis to abandon the phone?

"No, why would I know a random woman! Is the door locked? Can you get it to open?" she asks losing her patience and worrying about the way Louis was acting.

" Because who or whatever is doing all this seems to be using people we loved who are dead now to try and...i dont know...trap and trick us. Our Gran is dead, so is Louis's, so it makes semse that you probaly know the woman you saw!"

The voice turns harsher and more irritated, 'Roger is here with me. Now get down here now or I will come up there and rip out your tongue...'

"Harry! Just pick that lock already!" Shirley snaps again, the situation escalating quickly, getting tenser and tenser.

"And you! Look at me Louis! Don't listen to that! Snap out of it... please!" she pleads with the boy, holding him by his shoulders and making him face her.
