'I'm not sure our last few riddles of lost history are suitable for public consumption' says Alex, thinking back to their previous run-ins with the Nazis in the Amazon and Antarctica.

Crowley:

"No indeed, due to the previously mentioned lack of scantily clad female locals, as far as my publishers are concerned. At least there are some local females here in South America. For when I write this current matter up."

"Those pulp editors have no taste." Crowley sighs, aggrieved.

“Im sure you’ll make full use of artistic licence.” Jan says dryly. “Now, what can you see?”

'I don't think scantily clad natives make it any more suitable for publication' says Alex. Honestly, the man has only one thing on his mind.

"It's more that it gets them better sales," says Harry. "Money's real tight these days."

"I'm not opposed to the money." Butch whispers to Jan as he approaches the edge.

With the lamp you are able to see the ending: it is about 1000 feet. There are some debris at the bottom and something painted in the walls.

Crowley:

"Well, now that is impressive." Looking down, Crowley sticks two fingers in his mouth and whistles. "Guardian! Show yourself!"

Looking back at the team, he asks, "Shall we rope together?"

June takes a pair of binoculars in an attempt to make out what's on the walls.

Somewhat mollified by the lack of an obvious threat in the shaft, Alex reluctantly nods and starts preparing again to go down the steps.

“Oh my word, it’s a long way down.” Jan breathes when she hears how deep it is.
“I don’t mind going at the back.” She says, as if this might lessen her time down there.

Butch will tie the end of a rope to the safety strap on his tool belt and will pass the rope to the next in line.

"Be careful of any debris from the explosion." He says as he looks over the edge while the others are tying off.

Crowley:

Crowley ropes in behind Harry. He's still close to the action but is hoping a meat shield or two might protect him. He has one hand free and the other holding his Webley revolver.

Taking a nip of whiskey, Alex takes the German rifle and leans it against a rock near the top of the shaft, 'Not much use to me down there.' He ropes up into the middle of the pack, slinging his shotgun over one shoulder and holding a flashlight in one hand. He lights a cigarillo and starts descending the steps. 'Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip...And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth' he mutters.

Crowley:

"The skill required to dig something so deep and yet to have it last - I presume - centuries, suggests a level of technology well beyond what the Inca, the Mayans and their ilk were thought to have before the conquistadors arrived."

Crowley studies the walls of the hole as they descend, trying to guess its age.

OOC:   Can Crowley make a History roll or similar to recall anything remotely similar to this deep stair-well in the jungle?

"I think the ancient Egyptians could have done it," says Harry. "The technology existed at the time, but as far as I know it hadn't made it to this part of the world."

Sniffing Alex says, 'I think you'd surprised what the Inca were capable of, I've seen some of their ruins, quite impressive. But I don't know why anyone would want to dig a hole in the ground this deep.'
