Please use this space for your character.
Please keep in mind the requirements your character will have to follow which I raised in the Parlour thread.
If you don't have the Gaslight book, you can use these rules to help you design your character. Please let me know if you have any questions or need more information about what skill set your occupation should have:
STR, CON, POW, DEX, and APP are all rolled using 3D6, while EDU is rolled using 3D6+3, and INT and SIZ are determined by rolling 2D6+6. Dice rolls are made and distributed as the player wishes.
Minimum age is EDU+6 years.
Starting at age 40, an investigator loses 1 point from STR, CON, DEX, or APP for every 10 years of age. However, an older investigator gains 1 point of EDU for every additional 10 years of age, starting at age 30.
INTx5 for Idea; POWx5 for Luck; EDUx5 for Know. Sanity = POWx5; Hit Points = CON+SIZ/2 rounding up any fraction; Magic Points = POW.
STR+SIZ = Damage Bonus
2 to 12 = -1D6

Background: Reginald Smythe (Reg to his friends) is from a working-class family in London's East End. While he doesn't know how to act among high society, he is very chivalrous, always quick to be protective of women. His tremendous strength helped him contribute to supporting his family as a teenager. When he came of age, he took the Queen's shilling and enlisted in the British Army, dreaming of heroism after growing up on his father's tales of his time in Crimea and the exploits of luminaries such as Lord Admiral Nelson and Wellington. He was stationed in Burma, where he served with distinction and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. After he came back from Burma, he has been doing various odd jobs to make ends meet.

Re: Characters
Would you consider making Reginald an officer Mr. Handy? Have a look at my post in the other thread.
Re: Characters
Military Officer has a very different occupational skill list than Soldier, so I'd have to completely redesign my character. This weekend's almost over, so I probably wouldn't have time to do that until next weekend. If it were just a simple matter of swapping out Rifle for Pistol, it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Re: Characters
Don't go to too much trouble then. If he could be a senior NCO, e.g. company sergeant-major or something, he should be fine. His interactions with other PCs if they are officers will be different though.

Re: Characters
I initially had a spy character in mind, is this okay? I mean, I’m fine with using a Sherlock Holmes-ish detective as well. What careers are okay with you?
Re: Characters
Spy would be fine, as long as he has the appropriate military background I described in the other thread. Really, any occupation which reflects a middle- or upper class background with military experience is fine. Do you know what the skills are for Spy?
Re: Characters
I'll just do my rolls here first.

Re: Characters
Hi there Honeydog and team!
Honeydog, would a naval officer work OK for your adventure?
Cheers,
Andy

Re: Characters
Hi Andy
It would make more sense if they had all served together, so I'd rather stick to being army, if you don't mind.

Appearance & Personality:
Harry Addison is a man of average height, lean and wiry. His complexion is permanently tanned from years in sunnier climes and his brown hair is rapidly greying. He sports a moustache and rakish mutton-chop sideburns. He also sports a distinct scar up the side of his left cheek. Harry speaks with a drawling, cultured accent.
Background:
Harry was born in Singapore to wealthy English pepper planters. He was sent to the old country for schooling at Harrow then went on to read history (and chase fillies) at Cambridge. After Cambridge, Harry attended Sandhurst, and on graduation was commissioned and joined the Somersets.
After a decade campaigning, Harry's restless streak (or various irate husbands) led him to resign from the Regiment. He spent another decade traveling the world, with a lady (of negotiable virtue) in every port. Harry frequently served as an officer in mercenary forces across the globe, as long as they weren't fighting the Empire. A notable shot with the pistol, rumour has it he fought two (now very illegal) duels.
Harry considers himself a competent writer and on occasion over the years had written quirky observational pieces for decent papers, such as The Times. Not for coin, just for pleasure.
Most recently, Harry has returned to the capital to settle down. Or try to make husbands about town nervous.

Background:
Helena Jerkins was born to a wealthy family of four, with an older sister and caring parents. She was taken to London at a young age by her family as her family searched for more opportunities and career prospects. After a few years of living an ordinary life, she was taken to be trained as a spy by the British government to become a part of their Espionage Network. Gaining an extensive knowledge of poison, herbal drugs, the social norms and noble etiquette of many different countries as a part of her curricula.
She is keenly observant and a master of disguise, being able to change personalities and identities at the drop of a hat, inventing aliases and personas with effortless ease. With her training, she was often employed to visit foreign nations during wartime and peacetime to gather intelligence and to provide Intel to the troops stationed there. However, she was also tasked with assassinating political figures and oppositions in foreign countries as well.
Social interactions and languages are her forte, as such, she quickly gained a mastery of French, English, Italian, and Chinese. After several international trips overseas, she also learnt Argentine tango and several other dancing skills, which, when combined with her charming appearance, made her irresistible. Her ability to learn multitudes of skills and her ability to weave in and out of any and all social circles with ease contributed to the success of her espionage career.
During one of her missions to Burma, she met and befriended Reginald Smythe, who had served with honour and distinction in the military, and other members of the Somerset Light Infantry .
Her parents are currently being looked after by the country due to her invaluable service to Queen and country. Her sister works as a diplomat and was a woman of significant political influence in her own right, her elder sister was responsible for caring after their parents. Her elder sister is currently married to a knighted member of the parliament, much to her envy. Helena's line of work made romance and finding suitors difficult.
She lives a few doors down from a detective and a retired army doctor. Her neighbours had often complained about the unfortunately infamous duo's disregard for societal norm as loud violin could be heard well into the morning and sulphuric ashes emanating from 221b every once in a while. She hopes that the fine neighbourhood won't be ruined by her neighbours.

Re: Characters
Sigh... it's a good character, but I did ask in several posts that they have a shared military background. This obviously doesn't.
Can you at least make her English? It's not going to be helpful for her to have such low language abilities. I suggest swapping the English and French scores around, and that she was recruited as a spy while living in France. She should also be older by at least about 5 years.
The rest of you are veterans of the Somerset Light Infantry, and served together in India and Burma, not Sudan. Helena could have met the others while in Burma.
Helena will also need some kind of cover occupation - she obviously cannot present herself as a spy.

Re: Characters
Team, I'll go an ex-mil officer. We seem to have a good spread of skills already, can't see too many holes.
I'm thinking someone articulate but a bit of a rake. Somewhere between Young Winston (I read his River War book years ago) and Harry Flashman... With some Gronow and Kipling aspirations.

Re: Characters
Thanks Everyone
I know it’s limiting to pose restrictions on your characters, but I’m sure we don’t want to have to spend literally months of game time contriving situations whereby you are compelled to feel the need to visit and help some random bloke’s uncle. Once the scenario gets going, there is plenty of action to keep you busy.
The characters all look very nice so far – just remember that you know each other from your service days. The Somerset Light Infantry saw lots of colonial service, but not in Sudan – I’d rather your characters only know about that from what they read or learn from others.
Mr. Handy – please make Reg a senior NCO, otherwise his relationship to the others will be too inferior. And please, no Sudan experience - Burma, India, maybe South Africa. I doubt that he would be allowed to keep a service rifle at home.
Helpless Bystander – thanks for making the changes, but please make the character English, not French.
Juulme – sorry, no Sudanese experience. At his age, he is likely to be a junior officer, a lieutenant probably.
Andy, you can choose any occupation you think is appropriate.
