Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
It'll be at least Friday night by the time I start posting character sheets, but I'll explain how character selection works here. Each player should choose three characters, though you are optionally allowed a total of four. The survivors are divided into three groups, as follows:
OVER: The helicopter group, and the new characters at an airfield in central Nebraska
UNDER: The characters trapped underground in the facility beneath the T-Bone
THROUGH: The characters on the surface in and around the motel, and new characters about to be added in that area

You may choose existing characters from the first two chapters at any time, provided you have read the relevant chapter(s). Characters introduced in Chapter 2 may be chosen if you have read that chapter. Characters introduced in Chapter 1 may be chosen if you have read both of the first two chapters.

There will be around 30 characters added for Chapter 3, and no prior reading is required to play them. New players get first choice of the new characters, since they are unlikely to have read the earlier chapters and thus would be unable to play existing characters. Though the character limit is four, you may only choose three initially so that other new players have a wider selection. Once every new player has chosen their three characters, the remaining characters are available for all to select. This means existing players may fill their slots with new characters, and new players are also free to choose a fourth character from those still available. This also means that the last new player to pick characters gets to choose up to four at once.

Characters are given out on a first come, first served basis. You pick them by replying to this thread and telling me which ones you want, and then I'll send you their secrets by PM. Once you've received their secrets, your decision is final.

There are three batches of new characters being introduced, one in the OVER group and two in the THROUGH group. Due to the situation, there are only existing characters in the UNDER group, but new ones may be introduced later in the chapter.

The following restrictions apply to choosing starting characters:
  • You may have no more than four characters in all
  • You may have a maxmium of two characters in any one group. If you do choose two characters from the same group, you should take them from different subgroups. I'll explain what the subgroups are when I post the character sheets. For instance, the OVER group consists of the existing characters on the helicopter, National Guard characters at the airfield, Nebraska State Police characters at the airfield, and civilian characters at the airfield.
  • The only exception to the above restriction is that you may have three characters in the THROUGH group if they are not all in the same batch and you already have one character in either the OVER or UNDER group. This is because the OVER group has the smallest number of characters and may run out if every new player takes two of them.

I'm intrigued most by the THROUGH, so I'll probably go for a single character there. I want to play another character in the OVER, but I'm not sure I'm up for it. We'll see. ;)

The OVER characters are up now. I'll try to get the UNDER and then the THROUGH characters up tonight. If you're a new player, you should only choose one of the OVER characters for now. This is the smallest group, and most of the new characters are in THROUGH. Character who are already being played by someone else are marked in green, and those who are played by the Keeper are marked in blue. Some of these latter characters have been bitten by zombies, so you might not want to play someone with a short amount of time to live. Others are important to the plot and/or rather involved. If you really want to play one of them, let me know and I'll see if we can work something out, but be prepared for a challenge.

The UNDER characters and most of the THROUGH characters are now up as well, but I might not be able to get the last batch of characters up until tomorrow. If you're a new player and you want to choose characters before that, I recommend only taking two at this point in case you see others you want in the final group.

So Mr. Handy,
Let me get this correct.
1) I have to wait until the newbys have picked thier characters before I can choose my 4th guy
2) Since Alice and Jim are in the Under group and Bobby is in the through group I cannot choose anyone else in the under group but I can choose one in the over group or one in the through group right?

Re: Character Selection and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
1) Yes, unless you decide you want an existing character rather than one of the new ones. Then you can choose that character at any time. I won't be able to post the rest of the characters until tomorrow, but if you don't see any new characters you like after that you might want to go ahead and choose an existing character.

2) Yes, that's correct. You can either take a second character in THROUGH or one of the OVER characters. You already have two characters in UNDER, so you shouldn't have a third.

I've decided on my characters. Good selection - a lot of them are interesting.

UNDER - Michael Walters, British Psychologist

THROUGH - Igor Malanowski, Communications Expert

I'm also interested in Harry Flynn for OVER, but I think I'll limit myself to one or two characters at first. ;)

Re: Character Selection and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
Have you read the first two chapters already? Michael has been in the story from the beginning and he's a great character, but you should know what he's done so far in order to play him best. Malanowski was introduced in Chapter 2, so you wouldn't need to read the first chapter to play him, but you ought to have read the second in that case. I'll hold both these characters for you. When you confirm that you're certain you can play them, I'll send you their secrets.

Harry Flynn is a new character, so no prior reading is required if you decide to play him.

Micheal Walters is off the table then? Drat! He looked so very interesting

i'de like to pick up

Bo- Bored State Trooper
Airman Greg Applebee

for sure, and mr.foo if micheal walters is unavailable.

Now, to read through the previous chapters, I should be done all that by tommorow.

*edit* 50 pages eh... this may take longer than anticipated.

Welcome aboard, Kranix! That is a lot of reading you've got there. Each of those pages is several screenfuls, so you're looking at something novel-length there, but it is enjoyable. Good luck! Greg Applebee is yours for certain since he requires no further reading. I'll reserve Bo and Mr. Foo for you, but you'll need to confirm that you can make it through the first two chapters and want to play them. They're both great characters, and I played them at the start of the game when I was a player. If OathinBlood decides he doesn't want Michael Walters after all, then you'll get first crack at him. There are also a bunch of characters I haven't posted yet, but they should be up this afternoon.

I'll wait to send out secrets for those who have already chosen characters until I get final confirmation on those choices. Once I've posted the rest of the characters, then you'll see everything that's available and I'll start sending out secrets to those who choose from that point forwards.

I would like to choose those:
Lynn and Max from Under
Harry Flynn from Over
Melinda from Through

Re: Character Selection and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
Have you read the first two chapters? Lynne and Max have been in the game from the start, so you should read what they've done so far in order to be able to play them. I think you can get away with playing Max if you haven't read them provided you read the Chapter 1 synopsis - I could fill you in on what Max has done in Chapter 2. Also keep in mind that Lynne has a broken leg. The first two chapters are very long, so you probably won't have time to read them before we start if you haven't already. If you're sure you can play Lynne, please confirm that here. If not, you can always choose a different character or just play the other three.

Melinda and Harry are new characters, so you can play them with no problem even without having read the earlier chapters. OathinBlood had expressed interest in Harry Flynn, but he never reserved him.

I have read the first chapter... some 6 monts ago, so i don't remember any dog. Ok, i don't choose Lynn, unstead i chose Cheng from through. I prefered Lynn because i wanted to play a troublemaker/intriguist. Well, i can act with Melinda as i want...

It's no problem, you can still play Lynne if you've read the story up to this point. It doesn't matter how long ago it was. I haven't read Chapter 1 myself in ages either. Reading the synopsis that's linked to in The Story So Far should refresh your memory. I just wanted to make sure you're aware she's got a broken leg and can't move around as fast. Lynne is a lot of fun and I think you'll enjoy her. There were actually two dogs, Max and Buddy. Mr Zombie killer played Buddy when he came in late in Chapter 1, only to lose him tragically when Lynne opened fire on a zombie with a submachinegun she had no idea how to use and accidentally cut him down. Max is still alive and in good shape, so I think you'll like him too.

Let me know if you want to play Lynne after all, or if you'd rather have Gordon Cheng.

MR Handy,
Since people are choosing and the ones I wanted to play in Over are dropping like flies can I reserve the one that I want to play that is left, Julio Alvarez, or do I still have to wait until all have been picked?

Great, you've got them, Bosco! I'll send you their secrets tonight.

Steve, you just need to wait for Stoned_Golem to pick. If Stoned_Golem doesn't take Alvarez or doesn't make a selection by Thursday, you can have him. Andrew is only playing one character and OathinBlood is only playing two, so they've already made their choices. I haven't heard from Laraqua, but she has already chosen one character from Over.

ok well I found a backup for Over if I need to but I hope to get alverez since I want to play a medic. However can I reserve Erica Spears for now. Do not send me secrets for her unless Alverez is chosen but this way i still can play a character in over. Does that sound ok to you?

That sounds fine. I'll reserve Erica Spears for you, but if Alvarez is still available you can take him instead.

Alternatively, you could also play Amy Janssen in Through if you want to be a medic.

Stoned_Golem is not interested in Alvarez and might not have time to play at all. Steve, you've got Julio Alvarez now. I'll send you his secrets tonight when I'm back home.

The characters Stoned_Golem expressed interest in are Senior Airman Roger Coltrane and Dr. Dale Owens. At this point I think everyone can be free to choose any characters except those two. If you currently have less than four characters and would like to fill any of your empty slots, go ahead and choose your characters.

In that case, we're almost ready to start. I just need confirmation from OathinBlood, Kranix, and Laraqua (and possibly additional character selections from Laraqua), and to hear whether Stoned_Golem is going to play. Fearlessfred may optionally choose one more character. It's possible to choose characters once the chapter is underway, but you'll need to catch up on the new characters' threads. I'll tell you which threads you'd need to read if that happens. Dead characters can be replaced in the same manner. It's easier to do this sooner rather than later, but the simplest thing to do is to choose a replacement character that has shared one of your threads.

I still need to send secrets to the people I mentioned above when they confirm their selections and post a rules thread before we start. It looks like I can get some of the story threads started by Friday. These threads will probably be started in a staggered manner throughout the weekend. The new Through characters will actually begin slightly before the end of Chapter 2 in the timeline, so I'll get those threads going first and the other Through threads last to get them in sync.

Unfortunatly, i think i'm going to have to change my selections. I've been trying in the spare time I have to read all the old posts to catch up on bo and mr.foo, unfortunatly it's going to take far too long with the amount i've been working lately and I don't want to hold the game up.

So i'll keep the new guy, and i'll figure out a few other new guys to get this moving along. Pity, they looked neat from what i've gotten to read so far.

They are neat characters - that's why I chose them when the game started and I was a player! It's okay that you can't catch up on their stories, since that is a lot of reading. Just let me know when you've picked your other characters to go along with Greg Applebee and I'll send you their secrets. After that it won't be long before we start. I might even be able to get a couple of threads up tonight or tomorrow night.

Sounds good. I'll reserve him for you for now, but Hendrix might yet survive. Even if he does, you can still play four characters in all, so I can send you his secrets and you can take him over before then if you like. Let me know if that's the case.

Hendrix will get a couple of medals for his heroism, but it won't necessarily be posthumous.

If anything it was moreso. After failing a Luck roll he took 4d6 damage, which turned out to be 18. Dave took 5d6, but the total was lower. And Hendrix actually survived that 18 damage, at least for now, but he is at -2 HP and fading fast. He would have taken less damage had he remained strapped in, but he took the risk to unstrap himself in order to try to prevent the crash. The dice just didn't like him very much.

it's hard to beat a neo-nazi dying and dropping the remote detonator of a C4 satchel, upon which a zombie then walks and detonates it (although that type of detonator requires two presses, so it must be a lucky zombie). the explosion then wiping out the front of a building, including a bar & store room, where a keg of beer is sent flying straight against Dave's chest, causing lethal trauma.

Re: Character Selection and Discussion

Posted: Thu Feb 21, 2008 12:52 am
by Mr. Handy
That is true; I'd forgotten about the circumstances behind the detonation. Buzz had pressed the detonator the first time as he went down, however, so it only needed one more press, and the zombie was very lucky - one of the people shooting at it missed, I believe, and then Father McCormick wounded it in the head but failed to do enough damage to kill it. Then I decided that it would step on and trigger the detonator if I rolled a 1 on 1d10, and I did.

Mr. Handy wrote:Buzz had pressed the detonator the first time as he went down, however, so it only needed one more press, and the zombie was very lucky
there's a reason why in the 'Nam movies they press it twice fast.

that's because it doesn't detonate if you do it slow.

but anyhow, doesn't matter. cant drag too much real life stuff into it (and i didnt back then, so i'm not going to argue it now). the keeper decides.

Otherwise, yes, the selections are done.

Hi Handy!
Going in blind here! 8-)
I plan, if I´m allowed, to participate with a batch of new characters. I could manage one from the earlier chapters, preferably a medic if one is available. "There´s nothing like napalm in the morning!"
------status pending---------------

Re: Character Selection and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
Welcome, Syrinx! If you want to play characters from the earlier chapters, you really ought to have read them first and they're very long. Otherwise, you should stick with new characters from Chapter 3. The USAF characters from Chapter 2 can be played if you've read the second chapter and not the first, as can Kerry Pierce (though she's difficult to play). You could also get away with playing Erica Spears if you've read Chapter 2 but not Chapter 1.

Unfortunately, medics are in short supply. I added some new ones, but they're no longer available. Julio Alvarez, the medic in Over, is being played, as is the civilian doctor there. Dr. Brigetta Hausmann is still available, but you'd really need to have read the first two chapters since she's such a central character (and also a challenge to play). There's Sally the nurse in Under, but again she's from Chapter 1. Airman Steve Phillips, the medic from Chapter 2, is not being played, but he was bitten about 45-50 minutes ago in game time and doesn't have long to live. Lt. Blanco and Zorie Spooner are medical researchers from Chapter 2 and are still available. The new medic in Through, Airman Amy Janssen,
Spoiler:
has snuffed it
, so you can't play her. Amanda Deeds in Through is a former combat nurse and still available. The civilian doctor in Through has just been picked up by another player.

Let me know when you've picked your characters by posting here. Check out the Character Sheets thread to see which ones are still available, and look at the first post in this thread for instructions. Once you've made your selections, I'll send you their secrets and you can start playing.

Well, then it´s research for most of the money! From THROUGH, Spooner and Blanco are my first picks. From OVER, I´ll go with air traffic controller McCoy for the spare change in the till.

Have you read Chapter 2 yet? If not, it'll take a while. You also might not want to play both Spooner and Blanco since they're similar characters, though there are significant differences between them. Zorie Spooner is a civilian, while Lt. Blanco is military, and in fact is currently in command of the motel, so be prepared for a challenge. Kathryn McCoy will be a challenge too, and I don't know if you're aware of her current situation. If you haven't read her threads (The Tower and then Up Top), you should do so first. You should also look at the last couple pages of Chapter 2, as she spoke to the helicopter group over the radio before. I'll need you to confirm for me which characters you want to play before I send you their secrets.

Am I allowed to tag only one character? Then I can read up on a few others. Better to do a good job with one than a sloppy one with several! So as a starter I´ll go with Kathryn and I look out for new arrivals to play later on, doable?

Okay, you've got Kathryn McCoy. I'll send you her secrets in a bit. It's perfectly fine for you to reserve Lt. Blanco and Zorie Spooner while you start playing Kathryn. If you do decide to play the other two, there's a little bit more reading to do besides Chapter 2 (but not anywhere near as long). They arrived late in Chapter 1, so you might want to look over the last page or two of that. There's also a secret conversation that Lt. Blanco was privy to, but I'll let you know about that if you confirm you're playing her. As soon as you receive Kathryn's secrets, you can make your first post in her thread.

Welcome aboard, Ryan! I'll get you set up over the next few hours tonight so you can start playing. In the meantime, remember not to read any threads that your characters are not in. If you already have, pretend you don't know what was in them. You've got Simone Dawkins and Keith Deeds now, and I'll send you their secrets a bit later. Once you receive them, you can start posting in the IC threads.

For Simone Dawkins, you can read The Tower and then the part of Up Top up to about 2/5 of the way through the page (the last time I mentioned the tower roof - the timestamp on that post was 5:18 AM GMT on March 4). I left her in the same thread as Kathryn after Syrinx started playing her since she was an NPC, but I really should split her off now. I'll create a new thread for her later. If you've already read past that point, just disregard what you saw there. Remember that Simone doesn't know what's going on with Kathryn and vice versa.

For Keith Deeds, you can read Enter the Rough Riders and then Iroquois Down.

Mr. Handy,
Now that I am familier with how the game is played, would it be possible for me to pick up two other characters to play?
If so, I'll take Sally the Traveling Nurse from the Under section, and Jenny Cooper from also the Under section.

by Mr. Handy
You may pick up one or two more characters, and both Sally and Jenny are good characters who are still available. They've also both been in the story from the beginning, so you'd really need to have read the first two chapters to play them. If you've already read them, let me know and I'll go ahead and send you their secrets. If you haven't yet read the first two chapters and want to catch up, let me know and I'll reserve Sally and Jenny for you. Just be warned that the previous chapters are very, very long. There are also still several new characters available, and there are more characters introduced in Chapter 2. Those characters will only require you to read the second chapter, but not the first.

The character of Igor Malanowski is now available again. He is a Chapter 2 character, so if anyone wants to play him, you'll need to have read that chapter.

OKay, on second thought, I will take Frank Hodges and Sally. I'm already reading the Story So Far but, as you said, it's very long. Please reserve Sally for me and I will let you know when I am caught up. In the meantime, I will start playing Frank as he is a new character.
Thanks for the heads up,

Frank Hodges is a good one too. You've got him now (I'll send you his secrets in a bit, and then you can go ahead and start posting for him) and I'll reserve Sally for you for when you're caught up on the backstory. In the meantime, I'll continue to play her as an NPC.

2nd Lt. Rebecca Doolittle
Airman Thomas Cole

I'll take these two for now.

Thomas Cole has very low Sanity (28) right now, if you've looked at his character sheet. He also is indefinitely insane from losing at least 20% of his Sanity within one game hour. So is Lt. Doolittle, but she has a good deal more Sanity. If you're sure you want Thomas Cole, confirm it by posting here and I'll send you both characters' secrets.

Welcome, Cuchulain! Do you mean you're just considering taking those two characters, or are you certain you want them? If the latter, let me know by posting here and I'll send you their secrets. To catch up on Coltrane's story, you'll need to read Unhappy Landings, Iroquois Down, and then The Siege. For Colin Lewis, you'll read Enter the Rough Riders. He is also in Iroquois Down and part of The Siege before he moves to Blue Plate Special.

That sounds good to me. Ernest Granger's former player abandoned him and this board months ago, so he's yours now. To catch up on his story, start by reading Enter the Rough Riders, then Iroquois Down, and finally The Siege. Remember not to read the other IC threads that he hasn't been in. Once you've caught up, you can start posting for him in The Siege. I'll send you his secrets in a few minutes. The Rules and Guidelines thread contains helpful information you may find useful. Welcome aboard!

You've got him! Welcome aboard, mrcartoon!

To catch up on Greg Applebee's story, you should start by reading Unhappy Landings, followed by Iroquois Down and then The Siege. I'll send you his secrets shortly. Once you've read them and caught up, you can take over Greg Applebee and start posting for him. Greg Applebee is currently at the southeast corner of the motel. He can move to the southwest corner this round, which is where he's heading, but he will not be able to shoot until the after the next major update for Through, which should be coming tomorrow.

You can start posting as soon as you're ready. Kincaid can reach the northeast corner of the balcony this round, but he can't go grabbing weapons and ammo just yet.

The new Chapter 4 characters have just been posted in the Chapter 4 subforum, and there are 50 of them. Each player should choose three characters, though you are optionally allowed a total of four. The survivors are divided into four groups, as follows:
GOLD: The survivors who fled the T-Bone, heading for Warren Air Force Base
SWORD: Just Sally (for now)
JUNO: Kathryn McCoy and the survivng members of the Montrose and Perkins families, and the new characters at the convenience store
OMAHA: The characters in the helicopter group, and the vast majority of the new characters at Brooks High School in Omaha

You may choose existing characters from the first three chapters at any time, provided you have read the relevant chapter(s). Characters introduced in Chapter 2 may be chosen if you have read that chapter and the threads the characters have passed through in Chapter 3. Characters introduced in Chapter 1 may be chosen if you have read both of the first two chapters as well as the characters' Chapter 3 threads.

There are 50 new characters, and no prior reading is required to play them. Though the character limit is four, you may only choose three initially so that other players have a wider selection. Once every player has had a chance to choose their three characters, the remaining characters are available for all to select. This means existing players may fill their slots with new characters, and new players are also free to choose a fourth character from those still available. If you already have a character, you may choose two more initially to fill up to three slots.

Characters are given out on a first come, first served basis. You pick them by replying to this thread and telling me which ones you want, and then I'll send you their secrets by PM. Once you've received their secrets, your decision is final.

There are four batches of new characters being introduced, one in the JUNO group and three in the OMAHA group. Due to the situation, there are only existing characters in the SWORD and GOLD groups, but new ones may be introduced later in the chapter.

The following restrictions apply to choosing characters:
  • You may have no more than four characters in all
  • You may have a maxmium of two characters in any one group. If you do choose two characters from the same group, you should take them from different subgroups. I'll explain what the subgroups are when I post the character sheets. For instance, the OMAHA group consists of the existing characters on the helicopter, faculty/staff at the school, students at the school, and others.
  • The only exception to the above restriction is that you may have three or four characters in the OMAHA group if you have at least one from each new batch.
  • You may choose only one character from JUNO, and only if you do not have one in it already. This is because the JUNO group has a small number of new characters and will run out if players take two of them.

You've got him! Don't sell Kathryn McCoy short, though, she's a great survivor. Intelligent play (or failing that, a bit of luck) can keep her alive, and her injury can be treated further with Medicine in Chapter 4.

I still could not get the picture to come up and I was thinking that Darnell was an African American name anyway plus with him dating someone who sounds African American I just do not see him as white anymore. I may be wrong. It is up to you. If you can get the original pic up fine and dandy but if not use the pm one i sent you since that character is in football uniform anyway.

Yes, I envisioned both Darnell and LaTanya as being black, though it wouldn't have prevented them from dating if one of them had been white - I envisioned LaTanya's ex-boyfriend Kyle as being white. He's your character, so you're free to have him be whatever you want. I used the new picture, which is a better fit for him.

I'd say Friday. By then players will have had enough time to pick their characters, and if they haven't done so yet it's their loss. There will still be plenty left, but they might not get the ones they want. If you have one in particular in mind, just post the name here and I'll assign you the character if nobody who doesn't already have three wants him/her by Friday. Posting the name will also make it less likely that other players will take the character, as they'll know you want it.

Done, done, and done! All good choices. While Kate Wheeler and Dr. Singh are both technically in the "Others" subgroup, they are separate enough from each other that it's no problem for you to have them both.

Secrets should be going out at some point on Friday. I plan to make the introductory posts for Sword and Gold either tonight or tomorrow, followed by Juno. Omaha will come last, as it's the most complex, and it may take a couple of days to get all of them up. Once you see a thread with one of your characters in it, you can go ahead and begin posting.

I also intend to put together a rough map of the school and grounds and post that at some point this weekend. All of the students, faculty, and staff will be very familiar with it, and even those in the Others group have spent enough time there today to know their way around, though they may not be aware of what exactly can be found where. Emilio and Lori are former students, though, so they'll have as much knowledge as the current ones.

Good choices, beertender, and two characters is fine to start with. I'll send you their secrets soon.

Historians can be excellent characters in a normal Call of Cthulhu game of investigative horror, but even in survival horror Alice was able to hold her own for a while. She barely survived Chapter 2, but she was very badly injured and thus more vulnerable in Chapter 3. Of course, she also had some talents that were useful for survival. Ron Moore has a lot of useful survival skills too. He's not bad with a rifle, which always helps provided you can obtain one, and if zombies get too close to him he's deadly in hand-to-hand combat. First Aid can save someone's life, and his other athletic skills can be very useful too - especially Throw. If he ever gets his hands on grenades, watch out, but it's an excellent skill even without them. All sorts of things can be thrown, which is good way to attack a zombie without having to get close enough for it to attack you back when you don't have a gun.

Hey all!

I'm brand new, but excited to learn and have a great time playing with you folks! I've been reading over the rules and would like to choose two characters to start:
  • Chester Johnson

Aside from having personalities I'm interested in playing with, I think both of them bring some pretty cool skills to the table.

Welcome aboard. Rorran! Those are good choices. Scientists rock! I'll send you your characters' secrets soon. Once you get them, you can start playing Chester Johnson right away in the thread Science Is Golden. You'll want to read what's in it so far. Adam Donnelly's thread isn't up yet, but I'll post it as soon as I have a chance (which won't be until Thursday night at the soonest, and possibly not until Friday night). In the meantime, you'll probably want to read some conversations Adam was involved in in Chapter 3. In particular, you'll want to read the parts of The Siege that take place in the comm room starting with this post on page 6 through most of page 7, and again starting at this post on page 17 and continuing for most of that page. Then you should read Destination Omaha starting from this post on page 1 until the end (which is on page 2). This will also summarize many of the events of earlier chapters for you that you wouldn't otherwise know about. Have fun!

Hey again Mr. Handy, I'm not 100% sure whether I did it right but I chose the following characters:

Juno-
Ho Nguyen - Convenience Store Owner/Manager

Omaha-
Lori Desmond- Goth Quickie Mart Clerk
Doug Marley - Junior

If I've done anything wrong just give me a shout so I can correct any issues.

Don't worry, you did everything right. Welcome to the game! I'll send you your characters' secrets soon. Once you get them, you can start posting for your characters. Check the Locations thread for the threads and rooms that your characters are currently in. For Ho Nguyen, you'll need to first read End of the World Sale and then Trouble In Store (where you'll post for him). For Doug Marley, click on the link to School's Out Forever next to his name in the Locations thread. That will take you to the specific post where he is introduced. Before that, he was talking to Julianne Landers and Kelly Cameron in one of the classrooms, but they all left once the lights went out. Do not read the posts in that thread prior to that point, as Doug wasn't present in Megan Petrovich's room. For Lori Desmond, read On the Menu from the beginning and post there when you're ready.

Six new characters are being added to the Sword section, and you can view their character sheets in the Chapter 4 subforum. They are in a very desperate situation and will be challenging to play in more ways than one, but they're now available on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit of one character from Sword per player. Let me know here if you want to play one, and I'll PM you her secrets. I intend to start their thread in another week or so.

Thank you very much. I am very excited.

I do have one question though. On the map thread, all pictures of the school appear to have been cut off 3/4s of the way through, removing certain things from the map like room number 9. Should the map be like this or no?

You're welcome! No, it definitely should not be like that. I just opened up the page and it came up fine, though the middle map took a while to load. If the maps aren't loading properly for you after waiting for them, try refreshing them. If that doesn't work, you can right-click the map and select Properties, then copy the URL and paste it in a browser window to open the image directly.

You're welcome, and you've got him. I'll send you his secrets on Saturday. Ho is actually his first name - Nguyen is his last name, but several characters have gotten it wrong. His rifle may only be fired every other round, and he fired it last round, so he cannot fire it again this round. He can fire it next round if he spends this round chambering the next bullet, but that's an action for the second half of the round.

He is available, but are you certain you want him? He's currently in command of the quarantine clinic now that his superiors are dead, which is a huge responsibility. He's also wounded, and with his suit breached he must be quaratined along with the civilians. Finally, he's in combat at the moment. If you still want him, you can have him.

Also, don't forget that Chapter 4 is ending and Chapter 5 is starting soon. You'll be able to create your own character in the Gold section for the new chapter (and one in the Omaha section as well).

We're now open for new characters in Chapter 5! The five pregenerated characters are currently only available to new players (or former players who return) on a first come, first served basis and with a limit of one per customer. Any unclaimed characters will be available for everyone with slots open on Sunday, August 23 with the same limitations.

In addition, for the first time ever in Zombie Apocalypse, you may create up to two characters of your own: one in Gold and/or one in Omaha. See the Character Creation post in the Rules and Guidelines thead for full instructions, then make your character creation posts in this thread by replying to it. Remember that you're still limited to four characters total.

Actually, that's not so bad. If not for that 6, those rolls would be average. Go ahead and roll your 2d6+6 each for SIZ and INT and the 3d6+3 for EDU and see what you get. You'd have to get a good deal below average to warrant a reroll. Keep in mind what I said about low-stat characters and advantageous secret special talents too.

Looks good! I don't have time to send you his secrets tonight, but hopefully I'll have time tomorrow night. I can fit him in very well.

Some things aren't clear about how you spent your skill points. Which Martial Art does Rashad practice? I'm also not sure which skills are his occupational skills and which you spent hobby points on. In any case, you seem to have overspent. With 13 EDU and 16 INT, you'd have 420 total skill points and you've spent 458 by my count. You may need to recompute them. Also, your Luck score should be 50 with a POW of 12, not 60. Your rolls actually had 16 for your EDU and the 13 was one of the 2d6+6 numbers that would go in SIZ or INT. If you want to shift the points over from EDU and leave it at 13, that's fine. If that's not what you wanted to do (or if you need more skill points), you can leave the 16 in EDU and put the 13 in either SIZ or INT. If you put the 13 in SIZ, you'd lose your damage bonus unless you also move the 12 into STR, but you'd have an additional 60 occupation skill points for a total of 320 (or 480 overall). With 13 INT and 16 EDU, you'd have 130+320=450 total points.

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Posted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:20 am
by Mr. Handy
No problem. It looks just about right now, except it looks like you spent skill points as if you had 13 INT and 16 EDU, but your stats didn't change. If you do want to switch them, your Idea score becomes 65, your Know score becomes 80, and your Own Language skill starts at 80% (and would thus be 83% now, as you've put 3 hobby points into it). Was this your intention?

Also, you should only have eight occupational skills, not ten, but I'll let that slide here. Other payers creating their own characters should keep that in mind. If someone is making a character of a profession not listed in the rulebook, or if you don't have a rulebook, just let me know what it is and I'll give you a skill list.

I'm sorry, but I don't have time to write up Rashad's secrets tonight. I know what they are, but I don't have time to write them down and do everything else I need to do. The only things you should post here are a short, single paragraph description of your character and a one-line quote, like the other character sheets have. You may also post the URL to a character picture if you wish, though this is not required.

No, it was my intention to leave them be. I thought it reflected the character better, intelligent but not able to get a good education. Does anything need to be changed? I'll post the other stuff up.

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Posted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:34 am
by Mr. Handy
Okay. Since you're leaving the stats alone, you have only 260 occupational skill points and 160 hobby points. You'll have to lower your occupational skills by a total of 30 points, since the 30 extra hobby points you haven't spent make up the rest of the difference (and can be applied to two of your ten selected occupational skills, so that those become hobby skills).

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Posted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:41 am
by kouchpotato
There. Got rid of two skills, used the remaining 6 points in an occupation skill and used the Hobby points. Let's hope it's right this time :P

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Posted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 4:47 am
by Mr. Handy
Close. You've spent 289 occupational skill points and 150 hobby points, so you've overspent by 19 points total (since the other 10 hobby points could have been used in occupational skills). You'll need to reduce your occupational skills by 19 points overall to finish up. You've actually reduced the number of occupational skills to seven, but that's fine. You don't need to put points into all eight occupational skills.

Rashad is a young Arabic man who fled poverty and persecution to come to America. He has been working as a call center employee for an internet service provider in Omaha for several months now, and is a diligent worker.

All right, you're all set! I've entered Rashad in the character sheets thread. He has lost 10 Sanity during the course of the day, so he is now at 40. He didn't lose it all at once, so he does not start out with indefinite insanity, nor does he have any long-term temporary insanity left over. New characters will be spared those things until they go insane during the course of the game, though I may make an exception for characters with POW 5 or less. I wouldn't expect to see too many of those. The lowest POW I've assigned for playable pregenerated characters has been 7 or 8. The secrets will still have to wait a bit longer, but you should definitely get them by the weekend.

I'd like to play a retired military Sniper, named Madison Akerfeldt. Akerfeldt is 32 and a dead-eye shot, but was forced to retire from the army after losing his left leg from the knee down to an IED during a tour in Afghanistan a few years ago (he wears a prosthetic). He's rather bitter about his lot in life as a result.

Would this present any problems?

I'll draw up a character sheet for him either tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds good to me. Since he's retired, I presume you want him for Omaha. You've got time to create a character. It'll be almost two weeks before Chapter 5 starts.

Also, the five new pregenerated characters are now available to existing as well as new players. There are just a few restrictions. You may only play Captain Claire Kelleher, M.D. if you do not already have an existing character in Gold (though you are permitted to take her if you create one of your own). Dan Aldrich and Julie St. James are only available to players who do not already have a character in Sword, and the same player may not play both rangers. John Lee and Erin Halloran are available to all players in general, even those with one or more characters in Omaha, but I'd rather the players of Tariq al-Tikriti, Ali al-Tikriti (if anyone ever plays him), and Rashad Sadiq not also play Erin. Remember that you are still limited to a maximum of four characters.

Nicely done! I won't be able to start him off until this weekend, but your character sheet looks perfect. I'll PM you his secrets and issue his equipment this weekend. I'll post it and your picture in the character sheets thread when I add the other new characters for Gold. Of course, he still has to be in uniform when he's on duty (such as now). You actually get EDU x 20 occupational skill points, not EDU x 15. This leaves you another 65 occupational skill points to spend. However, you've spent a total of 190 points on your hobby skills instead of 180, so you'll need to shave 10 points from them as well. After your character is finalized, I'll tell you your character's secrets and which threads you need to read (hopefully tomorrow night), as well as issue your equipment and tell you what you've been doing so far today (and how much Sanity it has cost you before you start). You don't have much catching up to do. Then you'll be able to jump in and get started.

I'd also like a brief description and a one-line quote that you feel represents your character, like you'll see in the other character sheets.

Skills have been fixed.

Marcus Winters is a young, thin man who would look more at home in a lab coat than in body armor. He enlisted fresh out of high school, eager to serve his country. What he lacks in physical strength, he makes up for in skill, quick thinking, and determination.

Thank you. The points all add up now, but your First Aid is too high, especially for someone your character's age. In the Rules and Guidelines thread, I explained that no character's starting skills should be higher than 75 except under very unusual circumstances (with the exception of Own Language), though I am a little more flexible for older, more experienced characters. You should lower your First Aid skill to 75 and put the 15 points into one or more other occupational skills.

I'm entering your character sheet now, but I made a mistake in the PM I sent you. You start with 55 instead of 60 Sanity (I was looking at the wrong number for your POW). You should be all set now. Have fun!

Hey Mr Handy. Further to the PM I sent you I'm ready to get involves in what looks like a great game. At the moment I'd like to take on two of the 'pre mades' please, Senior Airman Sam Wright and Erin Holloway. I've also found a couple of portraits I'd like to use for them if thats ok.

Wow, mind-boggled by the amount of information! But, I'd love to go for the following 3 characters if possible:

Technical Sergeant Jessica Valdez
park ranger Julie St. James
John Lee

I kinda picked them at random, but I've wanted to play some characters that I haven't had any input on for a while now, get the roleplaying juices flowing :-)
Right, back to reading the rules!

Welcome aboard, both of you! You've got the characters you requested now. If you look in the Chapter 5 subforum at the Locations thread, the first post has a list of hyperlinks for each character next to his or her current location. These tell you which threads (or parts of threads) to read in order to catch up on their stories. For Sam Wright and Jessica Valdez, you'll be reading Fog of War first, but you'll start partway through. The links go to the first post you're allowed to read in that thread. At the end of that thread, both characters move to the thread called Triage, which is where they are now. For Julie St. James, you'll start by reading Rangers in the Night. After that, you'll go to Terror By Night. During that thread, you'll be redirected to Damsel in Distress, which is where she is currently. Don't worry, there are hyperlinks in each thread that point you to the next one, as well as spoiler buttons containing information that your character has but others in your thread do not. For Erin Halloran (who happens to be blonde, but that picture can be from a time when she colored her hair differently), you'll start by reading A New Beginning and then Family. After that you'll be linked to a post in the middle of Another Fine Mess, her current thread. John Lee starts out in Newcomer, then moves to the middle of Secrets, and finally goes to Another Fine Mess, which is his current thread. Note that John Lee is injured, but he's received medical attention, so he's doing somewhat better now.

I'll be sending each of you your characters' secrets via PMs. Once you've caught up and read your secrets, you can start posting in your current IC threads any time you're ready. I'll be updating both Sword and Omaha later today, so it'll probably be before you post. Gold may be a little while before I update it, so you might post there first. If you do, Jessica Valdez and Sam Wright should both make Listen rolls.

Handy,

I've taken a look at the characters you mentioned were available, and would like to select Jessica Valdez and Erin Halloran if possible.

At least, if they are indeed available, because I see that both of them were selected in March this year...

Cheers,

Richard

Yes, they're both available. Jessica's player had to drop her, as it was just one character too many to juggle. Erin's player hasn't been seen for weeks.

For Jessica, you'll need to read Fog of War, starting with the post in the link next to her name in the Locations post, and then you'll need to read Triage, which is her current thread. That's where you'll be posting.

For Erin, you'll need to read A New Beginning, then Family, and finally Another Fine Mess starting from the point at which she entered the thread.

I'll PM you their secrets when I get a chance, but I won't have time until tomorrow night. Once you've caught up and you've read their secrets, you can go ahead and post for them. I won't be updating Gold or Omaha until the weekend anyway. Welcome aboard, and have fun!

Okay, Raymond Crew is yours now. I'll send you a PM with his secrets soon. In order to catch up on what happened to him so far in this chapter, you'll need to read Fog of War and then Triage, which is his current thread. You'll be posting in Triage, and you can go ahead and post for him once you've read those threads and his secrets.

You can create your character for Omaha in this thread any time you're ready. The instructions are in the next-to-last post in Rules and Guidelines. Feel free to ask in this thread if you have any questions. Welcome aboard, and have fun!

John Lake was born into a small suburban family in the suburbs of Lincoln Nebraska. At a young age he had a desire to join law enforcement like his father. Instead of joining a police force right away John attended the University of Nebraska for criminal justice. After receiving his bachelors degree John applied to the DEA and was accepted. (Sorry this part isnt detailed I'm not 100% on their recruitment process other than what they require). After working in California for a year after his initial training John was then moved to a DEA office in Omaha.

Looks great so far! I know exactly how to fit him in. Please finish up your character when you have a chance, and then I'll send you his secrets and get him started. I presume you're using the Police Detective template for occupational skills, which is the right one to use. That would make his occupational skills Bargain, Fast Talk, Law, Listen, Persuade, Psychology, Spot Hidden, and one other. Which one is that? If it's Handgun, then that still leaves you an extra 10 occupational skill points to spend, but you've overspent on hobby points. You have 120 available, but it looks like you've spent 135, so you'll need to lower those skills by 15 points while raising one or more occcupational skills by a total of 10.

A casual observer would describe Brian Stevenson as just any other guy, working his way through life in an honest job, looking for a woman to sashay into his life and not much else. Beneath the typical blue-collar-worker appearance however is a broiling mass of anger at both those around him and humanity in general. Brian feels resentment towards the world because he feels betrayed by it. All his life he has been fed the media line that everyone is special, everyone is a hero, while the government just sees him as another tick in a box. Until the apocalypse this anger was only expressed in a controlled and sterile manner, with regular sessions at the local gun club and firing range as well has hard, fast driving. Brian used to endeavour to break as many little insignificant laws as possible without being caught, but now with the advent of the Zombies he has found that he can now break all the rules, all of the time, with no consequences. Amidst all this fun Brian has had another revalation too. All along they told him everyone was special, everyone was a hero. Well now with the Zombies in the streets and every man for himself being the main rule of survival Brian has found himself. He can finally be what he's always known he should be, the hero, or anti-hero, of his own story.

Looks great! Own Language is EDU x 5, so that's actually 80% for you. You're good to go. When you get a chance, the only other things I need are Brian's age and a short in character quote like the other characters have. I'll send you a PM with his secrets, tell you what equipment he has, and set up a thread for him. Once that comes up, you can go ahead and post whenever you're ready. Brian's starting Sanity will actually be 40 due to everything he has been through today.

By the way, in Triage, I'm not sure if you realized that the characters have retreated to the hall outside the padded cells, and that they are currently being attacked by one of the mosquito-things. You may want to edit your post to reflect this. You also have the option of taking a shot at the creature before it has a chance to attack Captain Kelleher.

I realized that your character is 10 years older than the minimum age for his EDU, which gives him a +1 EDU bonus. If you've already factored this in, then there's no adjustment required. If you haven't, his EDU goes up to 17, his Know and Own Language both go to 85, and you now have 20 more points to spend on your occupational skills.

Wow. I got an awesome roll: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2620194/ but it has a 4 in it! I'm gonna have to think carefully about where to put that four. I'm thinking Appearance. Be a hideous, hideous person. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2620195/ Also high rolls! As for the last one: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2620196/ I forgot to only roll once so I'm figuring I take the first one. Hmm...

Intelligence: 17 (surprisingly quick on the uptake)
Size: 14 (relatively large person - muscled, I'm thinking)
Education: 8 (no university graduate this one)
Appearance: 4 (I'm thinking widespread burn scar across part of the face and scalp - largely healed, but made her butt ugly; probably was once out in the field - perhaps as a helicopter pilot who got covered in trace amounts of burning fuel - but is now a desk jockey)
POW: 17 (where there's a will there's a way - probably why she crawled out of the helicopter and kept going despite being burned, perhaps a lot of awards and other such medals for bravery, hence getting a cushy desk job when physical disfiguration kept her from the front line)
DEX: 14 (still quite fast and her high intelligence helps her react fast)
STR: 12 (a well-exercised woman but her desk job has atrophied her muscles a little. Strength has dropped considerably due to hospital stay several months ago)
CON: 10 (the injury hasn't reduced her to a terribly low CON as it was mostly superficial but the desk job at the very least has reduced her endurance levels).

So, what do you think? Have I justified the stats well enough? I'm thinking a well-decorated war veteran, perhaps a helicopter pilot (I believe American female soldiers don't do front line fighting but they could transport troops, maybe?), who suffered horribly from burning fuel on the face and shoulders but survived the incident well enough. Not very well-educated despite her intellect. Probably doesn't have the patience for it. She's a pen pusher now and itching to be back on the force. I'm thinking she's in her early to mid forties. Name of Jacqueline Jones (more often called Jackie by her friends). What do you think?

Sounds very good to me! With the kind of war we're fighting these days, there aren't really any "lines" as such, so she could easily have seen combat. Don't forget that you get increased EDU for making your character older than the minimum, which in her case is 14. If you make her 44 or more, that ups her EDU to 11. If she's 34-43, then she still gets 10 EDU.

A helicopter pilot can work well, and there will be plenty for her to do. There's actually another female USAF pilot in Gold (co-pilot, really, but the pilot died in a crash), but she's grounded for now. If you look at the next-to-last post in Rules and Guidelines, you'll see instructions for creating a character at Warren AFB. Your character will probably have the rank of captain, but will definitely need to be an officer. You'll use the Pilot occupational skill list, as described for aircraft crew in Rules and Guidelines. Take your time to build her, and post her here when you're done. She won't be in Triage, but she'll be in her own thread, and I might need to wait until Chapter 6 starts to bring her in.

This is coming together nicely. A few more corrections and she'll be ready.

You get 11 EDU for being 45 years old, not 10. This raises your Know and Own Language to 55, and it also gives you a total of 220 occupational skill points. You'll need to readjust your skills and redistribute points. I'm also not sure which skills you're using your occupational points for. Pilots have the following occupational skills: Astronomy, Electrical Repair, Mechanical Repair, Navigate, Operate Heavy Machine, Physics, Pilot, and any one other skill of your choice (that makes sense). Pilot also requires a specialization (in your case, Pilot(Helicopter)). Note that you can take Pilot multiple times for different types of aircraft if you choose, but with your low EDU you might want to concentrate on helicopters. I can see that you've spent at least 137 points on skills that belong to your occupation, but some of the rest must have been spent on hobby skills. I'm not sure which one you've chosen as your eighth occupational skill, but none of them have enough points invested to account for all of your occupational skill points.

Regarding equipment, most of that will be no problem, but I'm not sure about the scoped rifle. A regular rifle (M16 or M4) is possible, given that you can use one well, though most pilots don't carry them. You will be given a Beretta 9mm handgun in addition to your other stuff, as that's standard issue.

I'll also need a brief description of your character, as you'll see on the other character sheets.

Finally, your Sanity will start out slightly lower, as you've seen a lot of nasty things throughout the day. No free pass for missing the first five chapters. :P Fortunately, your high starting Sanity insulates you from the worst of it, so your current Sanity will only be reduced to 80 when you start.

Yes, you can join, and welcome to the madness that is Zombie Apocalypse! You should check out the Rules and Guidelines thread for helpful information, including how to use Invisible Castle and to post your dice rolls as links (the first post has this). You should also look at the next-to-last post for character creation information. Multiple characters are allowed and even encouraged due to the highly lethal nature of this game. You may play up to four characters, with three being the recommended number. You may create one character in the Gold section (set in Warren Air Force Base, outside Cheyenne, Wyoming) and/or one character in the Omaha section (set in Omaha, Nebraska). There are also quite a few pregenerated characters available, though you'd have to do some catching up for them. I may add a few more pregenerated characters for Chapter 6, which is due to start in September. The existing pregenerated characters are listed in the Character Sheets thread in the Chapter 5 subforum. You can't pick anyone who's marked Deceased, of course, nor can you pick someone who is already played by someone else (unless that player is one of those listed as MIA).

You can have Dan Aldrich, but I'm afraid that you can't have Sebastian Harper due to the fact that he's kind of dead at the moment. I just forgot to remove him from that list.

I'll send you Dan's secrets when I get a chance, but you can feel free to post for him in the meantime once you've caught up on what he's done in Chapter 5. The Locations thread in the Chapter 5 subforum has a list of hyperlinks by his name that will guide you through the threads (or portions of threads) in which he's been. You'll start by reading Rangers in the Night, then Terror By Night (until you're sent to the next thread), then Damsel in Distress, and then back to Terror By Night, which is his current thread. There are also hyperlinks in the threads themselves that will take you to the new ones. Make sure you read the spoiler buttons that have Dan Aldrich's name in them, as those have information about what he knows or has observed.

Welcome to Zombie Apocalypse, and have fun! Feel free to add and/or create one or more other characters when you're ready.

I can see that your first set of 3d6 rolls starts with 12, 5, 9, 10, and 5. That's pretty bad even for me, and I've had some pretty lousy character creation rolls. It still doesn't beat the one time I got two 4s, an 8, and a total of only 75 points, though. You can use the group of 5 3d6 rolls you made (16, 12, 6, 13, and 14) along with your second EDU roll (14), but you'll need to reroll your 2 2d6+6 rolls (SIZ and INT), since you only rolled those once. You may do better rerolling them anyway. Even in the unlikely event that those are both 8, your total stat points will still be good enough to go forward, so there won't be any further rerolls for this character. Low stats don't necessarily doom you in Call of Cthulhu, as high-stat characters tend to get killed just as often - maybe more often, since they usually take more risks. Of course, low-stat characters get killed too. One of the themes of CoC is that you're pretty much doomed regardless - in the long run, anyway.

You can if you like, but you don't have to write one (other than a brief description of your character and a one-line in character quote). You're free to have whatever backstory you like, except I'll tell you what you've done so far on the day of the zombie outbreak and what your current situation is. I'll also tell you how much Sanity you've lost as a result of the day''s events and what equipment you've been issued. Your new character will probably be added in when Chapter 6 starts.

So apparently a lot more goes into skill points than EDUx5. What else do I have calculate to figure out my skill points?

You get EDU x 20 occupational skill points, which can only be spent on your occupational skills. The next-to-last post in the Rules and Guidelines thread has all the information you need for character creation, including occupational skill lists for various USAF careers. Choose the one that most closely matches the sort of character you have in mind. If none of them is a close enough match, just let me know what you're thinking of and I'll give you a list.

You also get INT x 10 hobby skill points. These points can be put in any skills.

Maximum HP are the average of CON and SIZ, not STR and SIZ. However, your CON roll was 12 rather than 10, so you have a total of 14 HP. Your starting Sanity is going to be 65, as you've lost some due to the events of the day so far. Fortunately, your high starting Sanity insulated you from the worst of it.

You'll need to adjust your skills again. If Handgun is your eighth occupational skill, you've only spent 290 out of 300 occupational skill points. However, you spent 125 hobby points, but you only get 90.

I'll let you know what equipment you've been issued. You'll get what you have listed here, and you'll also have a Beretta 9mm pistol as standard issue. I'll let you know how much ammo you have left.

Thanks, that's much better. You didn't set your CON to 12, but I'll adjust that when I add your character sheet.

Also, Dexterity is a stat, not a skill, so it cannot be raised with skill points. You can spend those 20 hobby points on something else.

Starting Sanity will be 80 in your case, as I mentioned a while back. You've lost 5 during the day, but it would have been even worse had your Sanity not been so high to begin with.

By my count you've spent 181 hobby points, but you only get 170. You've spent 208 occupational points, but you get 220. I'm not sure if you meant to put those 12 points in Mechanical Repair or just left it blank. The base skill for Mechanical Repair is 20%, so putting those points into it would give you 32%. Electrical Repair has a base skill of 10%, so the 20 points you added will give you 30% there. A couple of minor adjustments and you should be ready.

There may be a few new characters added to Gold and Omaha, and of course players can make their own in either or both of them. There will be no new characters added to Sword at this time, so what you see is what you get. Julie St. James is available, and she was added in Chapter 5. So are Raquel Orozco and Lara Voronova, who were both added partway through Chapter 4 and thus require more back reading. You probably don't want to play Lara, as she's low on Sanity and is in a terrible situation that will probably cost her more.

Mr. Handy,

Sorry I've been a little pokey on posting lately. This week is the culmination of all my hard work over the past 2 years. We are performing system tests to prove that it meets our specs. Won't end until next Friday, so if I hold anything up feel free to NPC me as necessary. I'm cool with it. After next Friday, I should be on my way to Hawaii ... lodging has internet set up so no cause for me to be absent.

The sheets for Jacqueline Jones and Derek Morrison are up too, but I realized that Morrison is missing a one-line in-character quote and both of them are missing brief descriptions. Please post those when you can. Secrets should be sent out in the coming days.

We're open for new characters in Chapter 6! The only new pregenerated character, Detective Gretchen Ehrlich of the Omaha Police Department, is currently only available to new players (or former players who return) on a first come, first served basis. If she is unclaimed, she will be available for everyone with slots open on Sunday, September 12. There are also a number of pregenerated characters available to everyone from earlier chapters. All character sheets have been posted in the Chapter 6 subforum, as has the updated Locations and Weapons thread.

In addition, you may still create up to two characters of your own: one in Gold and/or one in Omaha. See the Character Creation post in the Rules and Guidelines thead for full instructions, then make your character creation posts in this thread by replying to it. Remember that you're still limited to four characters total.

John Brunner (farm and Ranch owner)
STR 14 Age 39
CON 11 Idea 70
POW 10 Luck 50
DEX 10 Know 75
APP 08 Dam Bonus +1d4

I used Operate Hvy Machine, Mech Repair, bargain, Electrical Repair, Mechanical Repair, Biology, Ride, and Accounting as the skills for a farmer/rancher.

The two character limit is only for creating characters. The overall character limit is four.

Welcome, pfarland! Looks good for the most part, but the occupational skills for a farmer are listed in the rulebook as Craft, Electrical Repair, First Aid, Mechanical Repair, Natural History, Operate Heavy Machine, Track, and one other skill of your choice. You can fix this easily enough by rearranging things. For instance, you can put the points from Biology into Natural History instead, which will also give you a higher skill since it has a base level of 10% instead of 1%. You've also only spent 273 skill points on the skills you had selected instead for occupational skills, but you get 300 (EDU x 20). The increase to EDU from age also gives you the 40 extra occupational skill points. You've also only spent 129 hobby skill points on your other skills, but you get 140 of them.

Your starting Sanity will actually be 40, as you'll have lost 10 due to the events of the day so far, but the lower starting Sanity fits better with the character concept you told me about. If you're creating this character for Omaha, he'll need to have been in Omaha for some reason at the start of the day (and will still be there); his farm or ranch will have to be outside the metropolitan area. I'll let you know what's happened to him today and where he is at the present time.

Ok, problem was I don't have the rulebooks handy and I was using a 1990's character sheet to go by. I did the write up for him earlier, but didn't have the time to post it before I had to run out. Sounds like it will have to be changed quite a bit, but here it is so maybe you can use some of it.

John Brunner Backstory and Equipment

When the breakout happened he was on his farm with his wife and five children (ages 13, 11, 4, 3, and 2). An Army patrol (sent on a seek and destroy mission after zombies) was overrun and some were turned. A couple wandered onto the farm and infected his oldest two children. They in turn attacked his wife before his eyes. Then his wife attacked and ate thier youngest child. Since then his other two children have died also.
Character Spoiler,John actually killed his 4 and 3 year old. After the incident with his two oldest then his wife and the youngest child he couldn't get through on the phone lines. Then seeing what was being broadcast on what was left of the channels on the satellite tv he did it to save them from the horror. He is now on a mission, to kill as many of the zombies as possible. He won't needlessly through his life away, but he also won't go to extremes to save it either.
After slapping some plywood "armor" over most of the larger windows in his RV and bolting on a cattle guard to help clear the way of wreckage and zombies, he loaded up some supplies and headed to into Omaha. On the way out of his farm he found the National Guard patrol that befell his oldest sons and looted their bodies (the non zombie ones) and vehicles.

He does have a bum leg. He shattered it in a car accident a few years ago. He can walk just fine with just a mild limp, but running any real distance causes him alot of pain.

Equipment: M-4 carbine (with reflex sight) w/ 3 30 round clips and 1 w/ just 15 rounds, M-9 Pistol w/ 2 15 round clips, web harness, Kevlar vest and helmet, Night vision gear, and 32 MRE packets. (All from the National Guard Patrol). One .30-06 hunting rifle (with scope) and 20 rounds, one 12 guage double barrel (sawed off into a pistol size) w/ 10 rounds, one flat bladed shovel, Binoculars, Mig type welder, tools, bible, canned goods for 8 days, perishables for 6 days (in RV fridge), and a few momentos of his family.
Character Spoiler,He has a claymore mine he found in the NG patrol remains. He strapped it to his chest, set it up with a "clacker" (standard lever operated detonator). He won't take it off and it's whole purpose is to utterly destroy himself and take as many zombies with him if things get to the point of no return. He wouldn't do this if others would be hurt unless they too wouldn't have a chance of surviving. like everything else of course it's up to you Mr. Handy.
So what do you think?

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
That's definitely going to need some heavy rewriting. You should concentrate on reallocating skill points and coming up with his backstory from before the zombie outbreak started. You'll need to have been in Omaha when all hell broke loose, which means you'd have had to have been staying in the city at least overnight for whatever reason (his family could have been there too). You would probably not have been able to get into Omaha once things got going. Earlier in the day, the National Guard had quarantined the city and blocked it off. By the time it was overrun, there were so many zombies that it would have been more nightmarish trying to get inside. There would be far more zombies in Omaha than out in the country, with numbers increasing as you got closer to the city, so you'd have had no reason to go to Omaha, either. Instead, you were stuck in Omaha when it happened. It's very plausible that you were trying to get out and had been at a National Guard cordon while it was being overrun, but you would not have been able to salvage any equipment from it. You might have had a handgun of your own for personal protection and a limited amount of ammo, but you won't start with most of the gear on that list. Some things, like the hunting rifle, might be back on your ranch out of town, but you wouldn't have brought them since you didn't know what was about to happen. You'd have to acquire more stuff during the course of the game. I'll let you know what happened to you during the day, using your backstory above as a guide.

You'll also need a brief text description of your character and a one-line in character quote, like you'll notice on the other character sheets.

Jack Brunner
Farmer/Rancher
STR 14 Age 39
CON 11 Idea 70
POW 10 Luck 50
DEX 10 Know 75
APP 08 Damage Bonus +1d4
SIZ 14 HP 13
INT 14 MP 10
EDU 13 (15) San 50 (40)
Occupational Skills:
Craft 50%; Electrical Repair 60%; First Aid 40%; Mechanical Repair 60%; Natural History 50%; Operate Hvy. Machine 51%; Pilot 41%; Track 35%
Hobby Skills:
Computer Use 26%; Drive Auto 30%; Electronics 36%; Listen 35%; Spot Hidden 35%; Handgun 40%; Rifle 45%; Shotgun 40%

Jack Brunner joined the Army straight out of HS and spent 6 years as a vehicle mechanic. After that he came back home to take over the farm from his ailing father (his mother died while he was in HS). He reconected with his HS sweetheart and soon she became his wife. Their first child was soon to follow. He and quite a few of the local farmers pooled their money together to buy a plane for crop dusting and lessons for Jack and two of the others. In his spare time from running his farm/ranch and raising his family, he likes to tinker in his workshop fancying himself as a Macguyver type. He even got into the "pumpkin chuckin" competiion for awhile. He also has played around with HAM radio. He does have a bum leg. He shattered it in a car accident a few years ago. He can walk just fine with just a mild limp, but running any real distance causes him alot of pain. Right before the outbreak he and his family loaded into the RV and headed for Omaha. Jack had some paperwork to fill out at the bank regarding the farm/ranch and some deals to sign on with some companies. While he was doing that his wife wanted to do some shopping. Afterwards they were going to head out for a two week vacation and he was going to do some birding. Too bad they didn't get out of Omaha the day before.

What I figure for his equipment: One .45 pistol and 2 clips, one double barrel shotgun and 2 20 round boxes of ammo (in storage bay of RV), Enough food perishable and non-perishable in the RVs fridge and pantry. Tools and various camping equipment in RV storage bays. CB and mobile HAM radio installed in RV.

Quote: "Oh Lord, bless this thing and PLEASE let it work. TWANG!!! Lookit that, took it's head clean off!!!"

Looks great! No problem with the starting equipment, either. The only things missing are that Craft and Pilot require a specialization. You'll need to specify which craft you've learned. You can take Craft skill multiple times for multiple crafts, but that would dilute your skill points. It's better in this case to just be good at one thing than mediocre at two. For Pilot, you'll need to specify the aircraft type. Since you learned to fly crop dusters, that would be Pilot Civil Prop. Other available types are Civil Jet, Airliner, Jet Fighter, and Helicopter. You can take Pilot more than once with different aircraft types, but it's even less advisable to spread your points thin there.

For a televangelist character, you could use the Clergyman skill set: Accounting, History, Library Use, Listen, Other Language, Persuade, Psychology, and one other skill of your choice. Alternatively, you can use the Spokesperson list: Credit Rating, Disguise, Dodge, Fast Talk, Persuade, Psychology, and one other skill of your choice. Or you could take the Entertainer template: Art, Credit Rating, Disguise, Dodge, Fast Talk, Listen, Psychology, and one other skill of your choice. Note that Art, like Craft, requires a specialization. You can only create one character in each of Omaha and Gold, so your televangelist would have to be in Gold if your rancher is in Omaha. The televangelist wouldn't have to be in the USAF, but could be a relative of someone in the USAF instead.

Civil Prop certainly the specialty for pilot. I'm thinking Metalworking for the craft specialty. I'll work on the televangelist later tonight. I'm thinking he would be on base ministering to the troops.

Looks excellent! Your STR, CON, and SIZ are actually already below average, and your other stats are high enough. I'm sure you want more than 15 POW, but that is quite high already. Even your INT isn't too bad, though you haven't spent all of your hobby points yet. Your only hobby skills as far as I can tell are the languages. You only spent 68 points on them out of a total of 120 hobby skill points, so that leaves you 52 more available. Please spend them. I don't have a problem with your high skills considering your age.

Yes, you'd be welcome to join! The Rules and Guidelines thread has information on character creation (in the next-to-last post), as well as other helpful rules information. You can create characters and/or take pregenerated characters. You can have multiple characters in this game, and it's highly receommended due to the lethal nature of the game. Three is the recommended number, but you may have as many as four. You can create up to two characters of your own, one in the Gold section (which takes place in and around Warren Air Force Base near Cheyenne, Wyoming) and one in the Omaha section (which takes place in Omaha, Nebraska). You may also choose pregenerated characters. Only one character, Detective Gretchen Ehrlich in Omaha, was added in Chapter 6. The other available pregenerated characters were added in Chapter 5 or even earlier. The character sheets thread in the Chapter 6 subforum shows which ones are taken and which are still available. I'm also about to free up Barandis and masonstone's characters, as both players have been missing for about a month.

If you want to take characters that will be in the same location as Misfit's characters, that might be tricky. His character in Gold is currently dying. While he may survive, it'll be a while before he comes into contact with anyone else on the base even if he does. His other character is in Sword. Only two characters are still available in that section. Not only were both of them added in Chapter 4 (and thus would require a good deal of catching up), but there are reasons you wouldn't want to play either one. One was just bitten by a zombie and is doomed. The other is separated from Misfit's character, as she has been abducted by a couple of very nasty guys. Her Sanity is very low, and it's likely to go even lower as she endures unspeakable things. It is possible that Misfit's character will eventually be able to rescue her - if he survives, that is.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.

Actually, you should have made the Omaha character first and waited until you found out if Derek lives before creating another Gold character. You're only supposed to have one created character in each section. This character could be used in Omaha instead if Derek survives - he could be a National Guardsman rather than a USAF SF. The character sheet is approved and all of the numbers add up correctly.

Oops, sorry, and that's fine about the Nat. Guard thing. Or I can even roll up a new character if necessary. I meticulously went through this character and yet I make the obvious mistake. I think I did it like this because I wasn't sure if you were taking new characters in Omaha at the time.

Welcome, gazza567! Yes, you may (and should) have multiple characters. You can have a maximum of four, and three is the recommended number. You cannot create your own character in Sword, but you may create one each in Gold and Sword. Rules for character creation are in the next to last post of the Rules and Guidelines thread. There are also plenty of pregenerated characters to choose from, either instead of or in addition to creating your own. They will require catching up.

Great! You can post here with your choices, and then I'll send you their secrets. The Character Sheets thread has all their stats (as well as indicates which ones are no longer available). The Locations and Weapons thread in each chapter's subforum has a list of hyperlinks for each surviving character to guide you in catching up. Chapters 1 and 2 are on another site (accesible through The Story So Far...) if you want to go back that far. They're good, but it's a lot of reading. Each of those chapters just has a single IC thread. Only a handful of characters from the first two chapters have survived this far anyway.

In Gold, the following characters are still available (the chapter in which each was added is in parentheses):
Zorie Spooner (2)

Lt. Rebecca Doolittle (3)
Senior Airman Roger Coltrane (3) - down to only 3 Sanity!
Amanda Deeds (3)
Lisa Crow (3)
Lauren Montrose (3)
Kyle Perkins (3)

2nd Lt. Oscar Gomez (4)
2nd Lt. Barbara Ellison (4)
Senior Airman Tom Wu (4)
Airman Catherine Rourke (4)
Airman Gary SImpson (4)

Regimental Sergeant Major Raymond Crew (5)
Technical Sergeant Jessica Valdez (5)
Airman Marcus Winters (5)

In Sword, Raquel Orozco has been bitten by a zombie and is doomed, so you probably don't want to play her. The only available character, who was added in Chapter 4, is Lara Voronova. She has gone through some terrible ordeals and is in a desperate situation, but she is not completely without hope. You can play her, but it's not for the faint of heart.

In Omaha, many characters added in Chapter 4 are still available, too many to list here. There are also a few characters added in Chapters 1 and 3. You can find all of them listed in the Character Sheets thread. The following characters were added in Chapter 5 and are available:
John Lee
Erin Halloran
John Lake
Brian Stevenson

That's actually Airman Gary Simpson - it's his rank.

Oscar Gomez and Gary Simpson are going to be together for the forseeable future and neither one will have much to do for a little while yet, so you might not want to play both of them. You'll get a more diverse experience by replacing one of them with a different character. If you want a second character in Gold, Kyle Perkins, Raymond Crew, or one of the female characters would be a good choice. Or you could choose one the many characters in Omaha. All of them will have a very different experience than John Lee, even if they happen to be in the same thread currently. If you still want both Gomez and Simpson, you can still have them both - just confirm here that you want them. If you'd rather substitute a different character for one of them, please let me know here.

It's probably an out of control spellchecker.

Okay, so you've got Oscar Gomez, John Lee, and John Lake. I'll send you their secrets shortly. Once you've read each character's secrets and caught up on his previous threads, you can start posting for him in his current IC thread.

Two more characters have been added to the Sword section: farmer Steve Bell and his daughter Caitlin, a medical student. Wryce has first choice of them, but whichever is not chosen will be up for grabs once Wryce either selects one or declines. I'll start an IC thread for them later.

Cool. I think I'll go with Steve Bell from the two new characters.

I also like the looks of Airman Marcus Winters and Dr. Edward Singh.

Will that be alright?

Yup, that's fine. You've got them. Keep in mind that you'll need to catch up on the latter two. Marcus Winters was added in Chapter 5, but Edward Singh was added in Chapter 4. In each chapter's subforum, the Locations and Weapons thread has a list of hyperlinks next to each character's name. You can use these to determine what you need to read. I'll send you secrets for all three characters, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow. Then I'll start an IC thread for the new characters.

Anyone who does not already have a character in Sword and still has a slot open may now claim Caitlin Bell.

Welcome, Duck_and_Cover! Yes, there are plenty of characters available. You can have a look through the Character Sheets thread in the Chapter 6 subforum to see which ones are still available. In general, if they're not already dead or played by a player, or if the player is listed at the top as MIA, they are up for grabs, though there are a couple of exceptions. You may pick one or more of them, and you may also create one or two of your own by following the instructions in the next-to-last post in the Rules and Guidelines thread. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Yes, he's yours. Have fun! Keep in mind that you may play more than one character. You should check the Locations and Weapons thread in Chapter 5 to find hyperlinks to catch up on what he did in that chapter first. He didn't come along until near the end of that chapter, so there isn't much there. Then do the same for Chapter 6 so far, which will be a lot more reading. I'll send you Brian's secrets in a PM. Once you've read them and caught up, you may start posting in Brian's current thread, Prisoners. He's currently boarding up the front door, but he'll be done in a couple of turns.

Okay, they're both yours. You should catch up on what they've done in Chapters 5 and 6 by following the hyperlinks next to their names in the Locations and Weapons threads in the appropriate subfora. I've already sent you their secrets, which you should read first. Once you've caught up, you may began posting for them in their current IC threads if you wish, though there's nothing they need to do at the present time. They may still converse with those around them. Raymond Crew is on the roof with Major Stone and the sniper teams, and Jessica Valdez is in the women's isolation ward with the female staff and civilians.

Hi and welcome HWIE (Hewie)!

I think you are right in picking three characters. But... the general idea with multiple characters is that they are supposed to be in three different locations. The situation could have worked, should SFA been divided in three teams heading for three destinations. Now I believe that´s not the case right now. (Well, I know nothing of SFA but it´s my educated guess.)
I´d advise to stick to one of the characters. The one that speaks to you the most.

Then, have a look at the other destinations.OMAHA, SWORD, GOLD. (I think the SFA is in GOLD)
As a beginner, I think you should have a go with one character and add more as you get comfortable with running your first.

This is just friendly advice and I once again say: Welcome!

/ Dave

Welcome aboard! Thanks for helping out, Dave.

Yes, it's best if your characters are in different sections, or at least in different threads if they are in the same section. You'll get to see more of the game that way, and there's less chance of all of your characters getting killed all at once.

Strike Force Alpha actually has several members (and they are in Sword), though most of them are from previous chapters. Major Nelson Harris is not playable. He is played by the Keeper (me) and is the team leader. Staff Sergeant Larry Dauterive was actually added late in Chapter 6 as an NPC, so he requires some catching up. If you're sure you want him, let me know and I'll send you his secrets. You can catch up by reading his thread in Chapter 6 starting here, but only read it if you're certain you want to play him. You'll have to read about four pages. You're only allowed to read In Character threads if you have a character in that thread. If you decide you'd rather not have to catch up, you can play Kevin Osbourne instead. Just let me know your decision by posting here, and I'll send you your character's secrets. Both characters are in Best Laid Plans, which just has the initial post.

Once you've done the initial reading and gotten your secrets, you may begin posting in your character's IC thread when you're ready.

I think I will do Kevin because I would like to have a totally or at least near blank slate for my very first char in my very first RPG char, not because I am not willing to read 4 pages of back-story. heaven knows that after a 320 page rulebook, 4 pages is nothing. I am ready for his secrets.

hello again people. I have been surfing the forums, observing previous points, trying to learn how to roleplay and getting more firm grasp of the rules. I know that I said I would wait until I was used to it, but I think I am ready for more chars, I choose Officer Jerome Hooper - Omaha P.D., S.W.A.T, if its allright with you. that gives me one for GOLD, along with Kevin who is in SWORD. I think I will create a char for OMAHA

Good choice, he's yours! I'll send you his secrets soon. Jerome's current thread is Dawn. Once you've read that and his secrets, you may post for him when ready.

Jerome is in the OMAHA section. GOLD is the one where you don't have a character yet, but you're free to create one using the instructions in the next to last post of the Rules and Guidelines thread. Let me know if you need any help.

By the way, I forgot to indicate the tear gas grenade on Kevin's character sheet. It's there now.

I am going to get back to you on it. any advice?

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Posted: Sat Oct 08, 2011 10:25 pm
by Mr. Handy
HP are based on the average of CON and SIZ rounded up, not STR and SIZ, so he has 13 maximum HP. He will also have lost plenty of Sanity on the first day, so his starting Sanity will be 30. Mentally unstable sounds about right for him. :)

To decide on his skills, first you'll need to decide what he does (or did) for a living. The rulebook lists 16 standard occupations, but if none of them fit, I'll give you a list of occupational skills based on what his pre-apocalypse occupation was. You get EDU x 20 skill points (160 in your case) to spend on occupational skills and INT x 10 skill points (120 in your case) to spend on any skills whatsoever. Note that, as per the character creation rules, you can make your character older than the minimum in order to get extra points of EDU (and thus extra occupational skill points). With an EDU of 8, that gives you a minimum age of 14. For every full 10 years above that, you get +1 EDU, along with 20 extra occupational skill points. Your Know and Own Language will also increase as a result. If you make Gregor at least 24, that gives him +1 right there. At age 34, he gets +2, and so on. However, for every full 10 years above 40 you make your character (so, starting at age 50), you must deduct one point from a physical stat (STR, CON, DEX, or APP). Yes, his APP can go below 3. This would make him astoundingly ugly, and people would react accordingly. Having an APP of 3 is horrible enough as it is. No stat can go below 0, however.

If you have any more specific questions, feel free to ask them here.

Ok, To balance between Youth and skill, I will make him 44, as that is the the max age he can possibly be without having to take any hits to his stats. so he gets 340 skill points. 220 occupational points, 120 to spend as I like. So I can choose ANY occupation (dont worry, I wont choose Ninja)

Yes, within reason. Since this character is within the Gold section, he will either be a member of the U.S. Air Force or a family member living on the base. As a family member, you can have pretty much any occupation. I gave a list of example USAF occupations in the next to last post of the Rules and Guidelines thread, along with the occupational skills that accompany them. That list isn't exhaustive, so let me know if you have a different idea.

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

Yes, that's right. You have 220 skill points to add to Bargain, Dodge, Fast Talk, First Aid, Grapple, Law, Martial Arts (you must specify which Martial Art you've learned), and Psychology. You have 120 skill points in addition to that which you can add to any skill.

You should also decide on your character's rank, using the list in the post in the Rules and Guidelines thread. Remember that with greater rank comes more responsibility. You'll also need to write up a text description for your character and a one-line In Character quote that you feel represents him. Once your character is finished, I'll come up with secrets for him and PM them to you, and then set up a thread for him. I can fit in an MP rather nicely, and I'll have something interesting for him to do right away.

BIO:The youngest and malformed son of a dysfunctional, abusive Fammily in the worst part of LA, As a young man, Gregors mental stability was attacked constantly, he was totally unloved, and his life was devoid of any real friends. and he constantly had to fight to keep up the fearful reputation that he maintained to prevent him from being the lauphing-stalk of his part of LA. By the time he was 15, he knew his true calling, the UFC, a place where his fear-causeing face would be a blessing not a curse. it made sense, he had always been obssesive about stressing his physical limits and training as brutally as possible for his fights, as those two things were all that kept him sane, his pent up rage was always waiting there inside him. when he was pumping iron or sparring/delivering beat downs, he felt like he was not inferrior to everyone else. Aspiring to become an MMA master, Gregor Cross trained in Brazilian Jujitsu and Muay Thai, paying for his tutalage by betting on himself in street fights for the entertainment of the gangs. But, even though he trained with abandon to personal health and comphort, it was not met to be. After 12 years of fighting and training, he still was no closer to the big times. with a face like a monster and a track record of brutality, he was told that we would never get past street level, no matter how many people he beat into piles of bruised, broken flesh. So he joined the millitary. because most of his assaults were never charged by the law because of the fact that they were upon gang meambers and witnessed mostly by people who couldn't care less, he was admitted with a deceptively good record. Ever since He has been one of the most Feared MP's in the airforce, his new job only fueling his deadication to fighting and phyiscal fitness. He is a Airment First Class, refuseing promotion to be higher than that despite seniority

"Hell, I'm the Uglies mofo of all time! you say it out loud, I may settle for second place after I'm done with you!"

Skills: This guy is a BEAST of a man who was brutal and almost phsycopathic before the dead rose! he the strength and skill to take on someone even bigger than he is, that is, if there is a man liveing that matches that description. He is 44, and has been fighting on the streets and off all of his life, so, keeper, how much skill would you permit being given to Martial Arts, Dodge, and Grapple?

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

by Mr. Handy
As I said in the Rules and Guidelines thread, you can have skills up to 75% with no problem. I might permit higher than that, but certainly no higher than 90%. It does depend in a large part on age and experience, which he has. While he is not young, he isn't old either, so 85% is probably pushing the limit here. Keep in mind that you don't have all that many skill points due to your lower than average INT and EDU. Also, having a Martial Arts skill higher than your highest unarmed attack skill won't give you any direct benefit. I describe the rules on using Martial Arts in the Rules and Guidelines thread.

It says that Marital arts "With a successful martial Arts kill roll, double the roll damage done by a successful personal attack." ok. so, does that count with Grappeling?

Re: Character Selection, Creation, and Discussion

It does, if you use the Grapple to inflict damage. In that case you would do 2d6 (instead of 1d6), plus your damage bonus for a total of 3d6. There are various uses for Grapple besides just causing injury.

I know, I was just making sure. Is it possible to kill a zombie with grapple? and you cant dodge bullets, right?

You could kill a zombie with Grapple. Normally it would take an awful lot of damage, but you could grab one by the neck and try to snap it. That would be at a -5 penalty to your Grapple skill if you tried that. If you succeed, it takes 10 damage to a zombie's head to destroy it. If your attack is also a Martial Arts success, that gives you a better than even chance at a one-hit kill with 3d6 damage. Still, that would require you to get into a hand to hand combat with a zombie, which can easily turn fatal for you. Don't neglect your gun skills.

You can't exactly dodge bullets, but what you can try to do is dive behind cover or go prone to throw off a shooter's aim, which is also represented by the Dodge skill. However, you may only try to Dodge the first bullet fired at you in a given round - small comfort if there's a 20 round burst coming your way, but it could save your life if someone unloads a shotgun at you.

Ok, then I shall distribute guns skills accordingly. As a fighter on the mean streets of LA, its likely he learned that how to shoot pretty well, not so stupid as to think that everyone who he decided to beat-down would let him get close enpouph to mess them up with his bare hands, and haveing been in the airforce MP's for 17 years, he has probably gotten some experience with Guns. ok, last question, what weapons would I likely be given as an MP?

You'd be issued a handgun, most likely a Beretta M9. You might also possibly get an additional weapon if you were skilled enough with one. For example, Sergeant Larry Dauterive is an MP, and he also has an M4 carbine.

SKills don't start at zero. Every skill in Call of Cthulhu (with the exception of Cthulhu Mythos, which doesn't exist in this game) has a base skill level of at least 1%, often higher. This is what you roll against if you try to use a skill in which you haven't invested any points, and it is to this level that your points are added. Grapple has a base skill of 25%, Martial Arts(I presume you're going with Mixed) has a base skill of 1%, Bargain and Law both have a base skill of 5%, Handgun has a base skill of 20%, and Rifle has a base skill of 25%. This means you still have another 36 occupational skill points and 45 hobby skill points to spend. Use them wisely, since you don't have that many. You can find the base skill levels of other skills in a blank character sheet (available from Chaosium's site, including as part of the Quick Start rules - there's a link in the Rules and Guidelines thread).

The points still aren't adding up correctly. The occupational skills you've put points into are Grapple, Martial Arts(Mixed), Law, Bargain, and First Aid, for a total of 199 out of 220 points. Your hobby skills are Handgun, Rifle, Spot Hidden, Psychoanalysis, and Persuade, for which you've spent 139 points, but you have only 120 to spend. It's possible that you've mixed up Psychoanalysis with Psychology, which is an occupational skill with a base level of 5%, but that would result in you having spent 224 points on occupational skills and only 110 on hobby skills. You may spend hobby points on your occupational skills too, but that still leaves you with 6 hobby points unspent.

Yes, that works. I've posted your character sheet in the character sheets thread. I also added three other MPs to Gold. They appeared towards the end of Chapter 6, so I added them as Chapter 6 characters. They will have a little catching up required, but not much. If anyone else wants to play one of them, they're available.

Next I'll add information on the new characters to the Locations and Weapons thread, and I'll send you Gregor's secrets. I'll start up a new thread for them when I can, but I probably won't have time tonight. I'll try to get it done tomorrow night.

Paiuyu Deer track grew up in a remote corner of the Navaho reservation. She and her brothers would run 6 miles everyday to the bus stop for school and the 6 miles back. Eventually she began to out run her brothers and her merit in running granted her scholarships to pursue a college career. She underwent culture shock as she entered the western world and her academic standing at the University of Nebraska was in jeopardy. Her commitment towards her sport was nearly religious and deeply seated in Navaho rituals and traditions.

Indeed her religious beliefs are hanging by a spider's silken thread as the zombie plague broke out her rituals became obsessive. Nearly everything she encounters has a superstitious perspective. How could it not now that the dead walk the earth.

Excellent! You're all set. The only other thing I need is a one-line in character quote for your character, much like you'll see in the other character sheets. I should have time to add your character sheet and get you into the game this weekend, when I plan to update all of the other threads with active players as well.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't find your post regarding starting equipment. Piauyu wouldn't have much, but I hope for the following.

Hunting knife
Several smaller knives for throwing
Back pack
A medicine box containing:

ritual feather fan with beadedmand carved handle with eagle and macaw feathers
Sage bundle
Cedar pouch
Dried grand father peyote
Small obsidian dagger
Fire stick with painted handle
Tobacco pouch
Traditional running moccasins

Also,
Piauyu is a rather thin woman with prominent bone structures in her face. She has a typical runners build and may come off as too thin compared to the average person. Her hair is thick, long and a deep black, she doesn't fit the western ideal of beauty(her massive mileage on foot has depleted her breasts) but still has her own charms.

There are no problems with your equipment list, and it's approved. I've put your character sheet up and added your character to the locations and weapons thread. My Character Creation post in the Rules and Guidelines thread was where starting equipment is discussed, towards the bottom.

Thank you for your patience. I expect to send your secrets and have a new thread up for your character tonight.

I have chosen the following two pre-gen characters:

In Gold, Airman Jason Baker

In Sword, Rancher Jake Bell

I have reviewed the appropriate IC threads for each character and believe I'm ready to go!

Great, they're both yours!

Jason Baker actually puts in an appearance at the end of Chapter 6, so you'll need to read much of the end of the Sword thread Ranger Danger in that chapter. His story starts in the last post on page 22 here and continues most of the way down page 23, until several of the characters leave Jason Baker and Peter McBain behind. Once you've read that and your characters' secrets, which I'll send you tonight, you may post in your characters' IC threads when you're ready.

SWORD: Staff Sergeant Larry Dauterive
GOLD: Airman Peter McBain

Hope that's ok.

That's okay, but both of these characters actually came in at the tail end of Chapter 6. If you still want to play them, you'll need to read the last few pages of Ranger Danger, one of the IC threads in Chapter 6, starting here. You can even read it all the way to the end, past the point where your characters are no longer present, as Carolyn Wagner will have informed her sergeant of what she observed. You'll also need to keep each character's knowledge separate from each other. If this is okay with you, let me know, and I'll PM you their secrets on Sunday.

Larry Dauterive's IC threads for Chapter 7 are Best Laid Plans followed by Deadly Mission (his current thread). You'll post for him in Deadly Mission when you're ready. Peter McBain's Chapter 7 thread is Martial Law, so you'll need to read that from the beginning. That's the thread in which you'll need to post. Once you've caught up and read your characters' secrets, you may start posting whenever you're ready. If you decide you want different characters instead, let me know.

Welcome back, Misfit! Feel free to take any available characters you want. The list in the Character Sheets thread is up to date, and you may take any of the characters from players who are marked MIA as well as those characters who have not been claimed (except for the ones labeled Deceased, of course). You'll have less catching up if you choose characters who were added in Chapter 7. I'll list them below:

GOLD
Airman First Class Gregor Cross
Airman Carolyn Wagner

SWORD
Airman Kevin Osbourne
Tricia Barrett (you might not want to play her; she's in a very bad situation)
Mary Bell
Clyde Bell
Veronica Bell

OMAHA
Officer Jerome Hooper (badly injured)
Piauyu Deertrack

Quote: Protect the helpless, keep your head held high, and mind your own fucking business.

Appearance and Personality
Ryuu is about two inches taller then average, with a toned body. His hair is normally well groomed but in his travels it has grown out to a shaggy look. He wears a white t-shirt and cargo shorts. He has a tatoo of a large black dragon on his back, that is mostly covered by his shirt, although the head can be seen on his neck. Despite his near perfect body his face has what appears as baby fat that has never left him, making him appear a bit childish. Despite this anyone close to him knows that Ryuu is anything but childish. He has a very calm demeanor and doesn't speak much around strangers. Growing up in a Japanese community he feels that natural order is for woman to serve and obey while men protect and provide. He is aware most Americans don't feel this way but as he hasn't really been close to any woman in his travels it has never become an issue. He is polite and respectful to everyone he meets until given a reason not to be.

Background
Ryuu was born in Kobe, Japan to a wealthy family. His father was a high ranking Yakuza of a Sumiyoshi-kai clan. As per tradition Ryuu learned basic fire arms training and swordsmanship. His father was eventually charged with expansion in Chicago. As such Ryuu's family moved to the United States when he was five years old. As the oldest of four children Ryuu is expected to take over his fathers work one day, in light of thid he has been shadowing him for as long as he can remember. His fathers main business was prostitution, seeing the horrible treatment of prostitutes under the Chicago gangs and how much better they were treated under his father he grew to have a very high opinion of the Yakuza. This point of view was also increased by the economic improvement in the areas under Yakuza control which was due to the removal of drug trafficking and selling. When he turns twenty-one he is expected to start managing his fathers largest brothel, he came up with his idea of walking across the US as a vacation before he starts working seriously. His father thought it would be a good experience for him and agreed to it, he was walking along a highway when the outbreak started. He has killed two zombies and knows that something is going on.

I doubt Ryuu's family relations will ever affect the roleplay but on the off chance they will I'm adding it.
Ryuu's father is devotely Shinto, and thought he does not push these beliefs on his sons or anyone Ryuu's idolization of him led him to also take up this religion. Ryuu considers all Yakuza family but cares significantly more about his siblings, though he would deny this if asked. He is fiercely protective of all of them but particularly his sisters, aged 6 and 14. He loves his younger brother, aged 10, just as much but manifests his love by being very harsh and disciplinary towards him; demanding that he "act like a damn Yakuza." (OOC: If Ryuu wasn't far removed from his family this would have been his quote.)

I finally had a chance to review your character. You've spent a total of 354 skill points, but you only get 350 (240 from EDU and 110 from INT). Please deduct a total of 4 points from one or more of your skills. You also need to specify which Martial Art you've studied. Once those things are done, I'll send you your character's secrets and get you started.

Now the points add up to 346. Maybe I made a mistake before and you had it right. I'll put those 4 points back into Dodge, bringing it up to 59 again. I should be able to get you started tonight in a new thread, called Rising Sun.

There's one other thing I'd forgotten. You should also provide a one-line, in character quote that represents your character, as you'll see in the Character Sheets thread for other characters. I'll add that in when you come up with one, but I don't need that before we start.

Also, your starting Sanity will be 75. You've lost some during the first day.

Your character looks good, but there are just a couple of things that need fixing before he's ready. It looks like you've underspent by 10 skill points, so please add them to one or more of your skills. Also, you should provide an in character, one line quote like you'll see on the other character sheets.

His starting Sanity will be reduced to 75 due to what has happened to him on the first day of the zombie apocalypse. I'll start him out early on the second day. His knowledge of the situation will be limited. Also, I'm probably going to start him off somewhere other than Omaha, but where he is likely to encounter some of the other characters. Possibly Lincoln. I'll let you know the details of what happened to him on the first day and his current situation, but I'll stick as closely as I can to the backstory you've already provided. I'll select appropriate weapons for him.

If you want to run a Slenderman game, you can do it on this site. You might also want to check out this thread on Yog-Sothoth.com for ideas on how to run a Call of Cthulhu/Slenderman game. I read the thread myself when it was originally posted. It was my first exposure to the Slenderman Mythos, but I don't really remember what it said.

Ill raise Hide and Conceal both from 40% to 45%. My quote will be "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti" Ennis doesnt speak latin but was taught by his uncle to recit this after every kill. It means "In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit"

I've posted your character sheet and made one more correction. Your HP total is 13 (the average of your CON and SIZ), not 14. I didn't have time tonight to add you to the locations and weapons thread, but I'll do that when I have the chance and also PM you your character's secrets. It may not be until next weekend when I start your thread, as I'm out of time tonight and I have little time during the week. I didn't even have time to update the threads for the existing players, but I'll do that as soon as I can.

Hi Mr Handy, I think I'd like to begin with one character and see how it goes. My choice is Oficer Jerome Hooper.

Good choice, and he's now yours! He is wounded, but his wound was treated somewhat. He will want to find a doctor to help him heal further. I'll send you his secrets in a PM sometime on Sunday. In the meantime, you can get started reading what he's done so far in Chapter 7. The top post in the Locations and Weapons thread has a list of hyperlinks by his name that will take you through his story. In that thread's lower post, you can see his weapons, ammo, and armor. You'll start by reading Dawn, switch over to Warpath when instructed, and finally go to Breach! when that thread tells you to do so. Do not read the other IC threads that don't involve your character. Once you've caught up and have read your secrets, you may start posting in Breach! when you're ready. Hopefully Syrinx and Laraqua will start posting in this game again, as they have characters in that thread too. Have fun!

If he's available, I'd be interested in taking over Captain Nils Johansen, M.D for the duration of his continuedability to live.

Welcome aboard! He was added in Chapter 4, which means you have a lot of catching up to do. His Sanity has also taken a big hit, and he's wounded. If you're still sure you want to play him, you can find hyperlinked lists of his threads in the Locations and Weapons threads in each of the subforums for Chapters 4 through 7. You should read those threads in order, and no other IC threads. Also, you should only read the portions of the threads where he is present (each thread will have a link when he moves to a new thread). If you confirm you want him, I'll send you his secrets. His current thread in Chapter 7 is The Wounded, and that one is fairly short.

Appearance and Personality
Colby's life has never really quite been easy. Born to a poor Texan family, he was never one of the popular kids, not extremely good looking nor athletic, and wasn't the brightest kid in school. He's rather small, only about 5' 6" or 5' 7" and lightly framed, not sporting much in the way of muscle. His black hair is shaven close to his scalp and he sports a small black mustache. But, he did have a knack for how electronics and mechanics worked. Not having much in the way of money to buy the things he wanted, he started out with his experiments small, built and revamped them, and then traded them off for something new to work on. Not very sociable but quick to talk his way out of trouble or make a bargain, he deals with people when he has to. Preferring to tinker or play with his computers. He has a bit of mischievous side and is known for doing things "just because he wanted to see if he could." He's neither a criminal nor a good samaritan, he just lives his life with the cards that are dealt to him based on luck and his decisions (which are usually driven by a new challenge or fun).

Background
Colby Torres' family wasn't a very powerful one, rich one, or well known one. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. He spent most of his childhood and teen years dodging people in general. He'd seen his fair share of bullying and wasn't very sociable with the non-bullies. He barely made it through his high school years and his cyber delinquencies (among others including automobiles) have gotten him in trouble more often than not. It was actual do to his recent hacking exploits that he was given a choice, and he chose the military (much better than the alternative he was given). He was able to get into the AirForce working as a computer technician just a few months ago (by the skin of his teeth due to various reasons). He'd been careful to keep his head low and try to keep his spontaneous desires for challenge to a minimum since starting, since that's what got him here in the first place.

I know you stated that you'd tell us specifically some of the other things that we'd have as well so I didn't want to overstep things as far as equipment went.

Your character looks good, and I'll add him to the Character Sheets thread. The equipment you have listed is no problem, and in addition you'll have been issued a 9mm pistol and a few spare magazines. I hope to get your IC thread up and running tonight, and that will summarize what has happened so far. I'll also need to PM you your character's secrets. Once you've read those and your thread appears, you can begin posting in it when you're ready.

You're all set! You're in the thread Nerve Center, and you should read the whole thing. Colby has been working there the whole time, so he observed everything that happened there.

This post has full instructions for character creation. The instructions for Invsible Castle are out of date, however, and that site has been down for some time anyway, so you can use the forum's built-in dice roller to roll your stats. You have the option of placing your character in either the Gold section (Warren Air Force Base) or the Omaha section (Omaha, Nebraska). Keep in mind that this is only the second day of the Zombie Apocalypse. You're free to determine your character's background before that point, but I'll let you know what has happened in the last day or so.
