Arkham
Wednesday June 8th 1927, 7:00am

Sunrise over Arkham. There seems to be an energy about the city even at this early hour. Shouts ring out in the streets, police sirens fill the air, and people are rushing to and fro even in the most calm of corners of town. Newspapers slap hard and loud against front steps. Those who crack their doors to let the garish sun into their dark homes and grab the periodical read the following:
Arkham Gazette for June 8th, 1927 wrote: MURDER!
It was with shock that one Georgia Smith telephoned the police early this morning and reported the murder of her employer Mrs. Nina Williams Hope. Ms. Smith arrived at the Hope house at 374 Curwen St to report to work this morning and found Mrs. Hope dead on the floor of her living room. The murder weapon is apparently a fireplace poker. Adding to the gruesomness of the attack was the fact that the murderer apparently carved the number "1" into Mrs. Hope's forehead.

Motive has not yet been settled on, but some cash and jewelry were stolen and Mrs. Hope's personal library appears to have been ransacked.

Arch sits in his home drinking a morning cup of red tea, his favorite. Opening the newspaper he recently recieved, he shoots forward almost letting out a mouthful of tea. Bloody hell... He gets up and walks across the kitchen into his living room. There's quite a mess about the room, newspapers, photographs, and magazines scatter the area. Reaching the telephone, Arch lifts the reciever and dials Donald's number.

I assume I would have a telephone and some way of contacting Donald. Is this okay Amarriner?

As Donald returns from his morning jog around town he realizes that he totally ignored all the people running about shoutning due to some serious thinking he was doing. He picks up the newspaper on his doorstep and reads the headline while opening the door. Now he can't really recall what he was thinking about while running... Strange... Apparently having read the article while thinking about something else he hears the phone ring and hurries over, newspaper still in hand.

Uh, I guess not, I just picked it up. Why, anything interesting? Donald scans the front page again... The headline jumps out at him immediately this time! Dear Lord! Have we met these people? You don't think it could have been our escapee do you? The color drains from his face as this thought reaches him...

Donald and Arch both briefly pause to think. Neither of them can remember ever meeting either person. They're both strangers as far as they know.

Donald and Arch decide to meet at the M.U. Library steps. They figure they can head over to Albert's office and bring him into the conversation if necessary. They didn't want to bother him just yet until they had a handle on what they were doing first.

I think Miss Scarlet is still MIA for now so I'll NPC Albert as necessary. I just didn't want to bring you to him first if you didn't want to talk to him yet. Just close enough to do so if you wanted to. :)

Arch Ackland

Wearing a faded black suit and pants, Arch adjusted his fedora and walked toward the Miskatonic University campus. His old shoes clicked on the sidewalk as he approached the library. The library looked in full swing as Arch approached the steps. He casually looked around for Donald, but no luck. He plopped down onto one of the steps, and reached into his pocket for a cigarette. He lit the end and took a deep breathe. It's gonna be a long day

Arkham
Wednesday June 8th 1927, 7:00am

Rascee Timms
comes back from the morning stroll down the old saw mills´trail after having picked up the Gazette at the Butcher´s. He only used it for wrapping anyways... Timms sits down on the stairs leading up to the cabin´s porch. The article catches his attention. He reads it and discards the paper on the steps. Bloody murders every other day.... Can´t even walk the dog anymore before there´s a new dug grave out there. His mind goes back to the morning he helped out with that grave by the river. What would it be next? Deciding to not ponder more he grabs the large axe and starts with the morning´s wood chopping. He has a delivery to the asylum. They apparently needed heat, despite thewarm nights. Two carts the order had read. Whistling he gets to it.

Donald Lutherhagen
After his blistering hot shower, Donald jumps into some clothes and grabbing a hot cinnamon bun at the bakers, walks to the University Library. A chilly wind sweeps the street and is gone to harass other people on it's way to lower pressure levels. He sees people shivering on the sidewalks before him and buttoning their coats up just a little more. The air is calm once again and nothing but a squirrel stirs the leaves of the surrounding trees.
As he walks up to the Library he sees Arch intently searching the horizon with his eyes, presumably looking for something to photograph.
Good morning to you. What plans for today? Do we check on the Asylum or meet the man at the Historical Society? Lots of places to see, not many of us searchers left. Maybe we can call on Mr. Atkinson, the detective. He seemed quite intent to see this through. Shall we go find him? I think he worked with Stantonall or some other firm.

When he finishes the last log he gets the first cart ready. The two turns would take him roughly forty minutes to deliver. At 9:20 AM he estimates it will be time for tea and scones at the bakery close to the Asylym. A habit from Klondike -07. (He still carried the nugget around his neck in a chain of twined silver.)

True to his estimation he arrives at the bakery by half past nine. Buff is panting by beside the chair Timms occupies on the outside serving area of Miss Pine´s Bakery.

Arch Ackland

By the time Arch sees Donald approaching the Library, his freshly lit cigarette is down to its butt. He stomps the cigarette into the cement steps and rises to greet Donald while adjusting his tie.

I don't know, perhaps we can try calling up that Atkinson fellow, we could use an extra pair of eyes on this. You think it would be wise to try the old man again? I have a weird feeling about him, like he might know something. And right now, he's our only person left who was at the scene of the crime.

To tell you the truth, I'd feel a bit out of place going there without the doctor with us. Maybe later. Let's find the detective and try the Historical Society maybe. The man told us to come today, didn't he. Let's oblige him.

Gregory Atkinson

Starting out early the next morning, Gregory puts in a call to Ms. Dumont for her to ask the client to reschedule next week. I have to wrap up this Cardigan business before anything else, he thinks irritably.

He strolls down to a nearby diner for a small breakfast and grabs a paper from the boy on the corner, ignoring the kid's jabbering about the latest something or another, too self-absorbed to pay any attention. He orders his customary coffee and danish and has a cigarette while waiting. Halfway through his second cup he opens the paper...

Atwater! he shouts, startling the other patrons, and bolts for the door, barely remembering to toss some money on the counter. I don't know why I know, but that crazy kid has killed another, it just can't be a coincidence! I better find Roberts quickly and look into this. God I hope I'm wrong.

At the Bakery
Syrinx wrote:True to his estimation he arrives at the bakery by half past nine. Buff is panting by beside the chair Timms occupies on the outside serving area of Miss Pine´s Bakery.
Jack Roberts strolls into the bakery just as Timms is finishing up. As he orders his morning breakfast, Jack spots the latter and walks over to him. You're Timms, right? I had done a little digging and asking around at the police station about people who were involved in the search for Richard Cardigan who might know a little more about the woods surrounding the Miskatonic. They mentioned your name and showed me your picture so I hope you don't mind the intrusion, but I was wondering ... well hoping, really ... that you wouldn't mind if I asked you a few questions. Or even better, if you wouldn't mind accompanying me to a law office around the corner and talking the situation over with an acquaintance of mine. I know this is all very sudden, but we could use a fresh perspective on things and you might just be the man to help us out. What do you say? Jack scratches the scruff of Buff's neck.

Cliched and a little forced, but it works, right? :)

Arkham Historical Society
Image
Arch and Donald decide to head over to Albert's office to see if he's in yet. They greet Miss Dalton on the way in and she directs them into the professor's room. He's there shuffling through a few school papers, but greets them eagerly and is ready to get started again on the trail of things. He asks them to give him a moment while he finishes up his filing so they wait in the foyer and small-talk with Dalton.

Presently, Albert comes out of his office, hands a few things to Miss Dalton and ushers Arch and Donald through the door and out into the warm Arkham day. They mention heading to the Historical Society and he concurs so they pile into the Ford again and head over there. Once there, they head inside and ask Janice Putnam if they can meet with Peabody.

After another few minutes, Peabody does finally come into the Hall and greet the trio. Good morning again, gentlemen. I hope this day finds you well. I hope the bridge article was of some help. What can I do for you? Ghastly news about that murder, right?

If this gets too unwieldy, I'll split it into two threads. I suspect you'll all meet up again at some point, though.

"Who want´s to know?", Rascee asks as he looks the man in his mid thirties over. "Been digging some yourself have you?" Actually the company could be welcome... He watches Buff´s reaction, the fact that this falla´hadn´t lost his hand was evidence enough that he was solid. Timms demeanour changes and the lined face sows a hint of a smile, "Just pick up the tab here, and I´ll see your firends, Mr?"

Well no, I don't think I do. However there's something ... familiar about her that I can't quite put my finger on. Williams is a fairly common surname, to be sure, but for whatever reason it's striking a chord with me. Something in relation to that bridge you asked about yesterday perhaps. Perhaps not, I can't say at the moment. At any rate I had just started researching it a bit, but have nothing to show for it just yet. Maybe it was something about where she lived? Peabody trails off a bit here as if he's asking the question to himself. Hmm, I don't know. Maybe not.

Oh, I'm a fool, my apologies. The name's Jack Roberts. Jack genuinely seems sorry and offers a handshake to Rascee. I'm afraid digging is part of who I am. Just can't help it. I'm a P.I. by trade. Only been in Arkham for a few months, but yeah that's the vibe I give off, I'm afraid, Jack says with a smile. He then promptly pays the bill for Rascee and steps towards the door. Shall we? Are you ready? No rush, mind you. We're just heading a few blocks south to the Saltonstall offices.

Timms nods and pushes the chair clear of the table. He exits through the door Jack presently holds open. Buff trails after him at a leisure pace. Knowing the town, Rascee leaves the cart outside the bakery. As the pair of rugged men walk towards the offices Timms clears a pipe and lights it using a match against the palm of his hand.

Jack leads Timms through the streets of Arkham to the corner of Gedney and Hyde. The offices of E. E. Saltonstall are there and Jack enters. He asks the secretary if Gregory is in and she points him towards the latter's office since she recognizes Jack, though she doesn't know who Timms is.

Gregory is sitting behind his desk, trying to clear everything out so he can concentrate on the Atwater/Cardigan case. He's just returned from the diner after reading about the murder in the paper.

OOC I took the liberty to returning Gregory to his office, hope you don't mind, Samuel.

That is why I left his destination vague, I figured you could meet us up on the street, here, or wherever.

The lined face of Rascee remains watchful as he waits for Jack to deal with the introduction. His business, not mine... He looks at the desk to make out what´s the man is working on, and to get an idea of what kind of fellow this Gregory guy is. (Sloppy or tidy?)

The desk looks messy enough. Timms decides to get this over with, "Rascee Timms, I gather you have some questions about a grave? Or maybe the Cardigan fella´?"
He scratches the stubble on his chin and waits for the man behind the desk to acknowledge the new arrivals.

To Arch, Peabody says, Nothing jumps into my head. It's across the river up in the north side of town. Some call that neighborhood Northside, in fact. Actually, I think it's on the same block as the Gazette. Not too far from the asylum, now that I think about it. Just a few blocks west.

OOC: Yep, the other paper is the Advertiser.

To Donald, Peabody says, Hmm, let me see if I have today's. I'm sure I do ... Peabody shuffles off into another room where the investigators hear him shuffling around for a bit. Mrs. Putnam is neatening up her desk. Presently Peabody comes back in and shows today's Advertiser. Nothing more here, I'm afraid. They pretty much report what the Gazette said. Just that Mrs. Hope was found dead by her maid early in the morning.

Jack simply stares at Atkinson, a blank expression on his face. As Timms speaks Jack snaps out of his seemingly never-ending daze. I found him at the cafe down the street. Some of the boys down at the station think he could be of some use, he knows the woods around the Miskatonic. Any new information come in while i was gone?

Im sorry i haven't gotten around to posting this past week, i've been so busy i just haven't had a chance to sit down.

Nothing new, Jack, but I think we need to get on this latest killing first, I hope my gut feeling is wrong and want to prove it.

Why don't we talk to the police and see what else we can learn, and also see what the Professors are up to, I'm sure they have heard about all this.

Peabody thinks hard on this one. Hmm, no not that I can recall. Nothing is sticking out, at any rate ... He almost seems a little unsure, but doesn't have much else to say about it.

You guys could head over and meet the others at the Society if you'd like as I'll assume you all knew you were going there eventually today. Otherwise, you could go to the Police Station as you mentioned, or the Asylum. Just let me know your next move.

Peabody thinks hard on this before answering. I've been trying to think on that, actually. Nothing comes to mind immediately other than the article I showed you yesterday. Here, let me get it again ... With that, Peabody leaves for a minute to get another copy of the article (http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/viewtop ... 331#p55317). He rushes back into the room obviously more frantic than before. By the gods! I can't believe I'd forgotten. You asked before if I'd known Miss Hope, and I said I didn't think so, but it sounded familiar! Look at the last sentence of my article! "My particular thanks to Mrs. Nina Williams Hope of Arkham, who supplied information important to my tale." I'd interviewed the poor woman while researching this article! Curse my aged brain! I wonder if something could be gleaned from seeing the murder site. I don't know that the police would let us in, but it might be worth a try!
