Chapter 2 : V-DAY! : VIKINGS!!

Osvald led Orm onto the top deck as his friends were dragged away to the hold by the no good bastard whore Gilliog. Captain Gunwarr followed silently watching the two venerable Vikings. Osvald stopped and looked out to sea. Captain Gunaharr looked worried and intense. Osvald then turned to Orm.

We're all going to drown Orm. How does that make you feel? Are you ready to die?

"I've been ready to die for what feels like a man's age. Nothing would please me more than entering the afterlife." Orm answers.

Osvauld nods and holds his serious tone.

Image

Good! I sensed that about you when you first boarded. You are not like the other Viking men. There is an air of sadness and suffering about you Orm that I cannot ignore. I hear you have no family to speak of? That you are alone. Have you heard this passage from the Sayings of Har?

Osvauld looks back into Orm's eyes with a deep and penetrating gaze. He closes his eyes and recites the Havamal from memory. It nearly brings a tear to Orm's eye. Captain Guinharr nods his approval as Osvauld speaks with the confidence and sincerety of spiritual champion.

He who has seen and suffered much,
And knows the ways of the world,
Who has traveled', can tell what spirit
Governs the men he meets,

Osvauld stops and opens his eyes, waiting for Orm to speak his mind. Osvauld looks so peaceful where as Captain Gunharr is tense and seems ready to pounce on Orm and smash his face into a thousand bloody shards.

"It is indeed words that ring true to me. I had family and happiness once, but that was taken from me." Orm is suddenly struck by a thought. It is becoming hard to remember her face. Shouldn't he be able to keep that to himself or will he lose that as well?

That is why I singled you out Orm. You could serve your people and win a place for yourself in Valhalla. For you and for your lost loved ones.

Captain Gunharr, listening closely, approaches Osvauld and Orm and draws his sword.

Image

The witch Melkorka has seen the Icebreaker... lay waste upon the rocks of Helluland in one of her divinations. The foul wretched creature says all who die will earn their place in Valhalla.

Captain Gunharr spits on the deck boards in disgust.

It is the ones who live that interest me.... I must stay with the ship and see to as many men as I can but the witch holds power over us all. Our King himself insisted we see to Melkorka's survival.... and to her shifty Bard. She must reach Helluland, but I fear her plans will stray from our goals Orm.

"So what do you wish for me to do? Watch the witch and her bard?" Orm is curious indeed of the witch and her follower.

Captain Gunharr steps forward and silently nods his respect for Orm. Osvauld maintains his intense concerned stare on Orm.

Image

We are not traveling to Helluland as Conquerors Orm. What interest would our king have of this flat wasteland. There are much more prosperous lands to the south. No!.. we are explorers. Our king believes this island holds a long lost secret to the Viking people. We seek the last of Odin's runes. That which was kept from us by the very gods. Our king seeks it. He dispatched three ships with three goals to the island of Helluland. We are to make sure the first ship complete's its task and clear the way for the third ship. Melkorka has her own orders but all the Captains were told of our true mission. Of all the witches, Melkorka's the worst of em. She'll try to keep the last rune for herself. You can be sure of that Orm. The god's have pointed their finger at Osvauld... I seen it with me own eyes. I want you to stay close to Osvauld Orm. Stay close to Osvauld and keep your eye on the witch. I'm counting on both of you to see this thing through. Can I count on you lad?

"Of course. I'll do my best or die trying. But what use will our king have with the last of Odin's runes? Shouldn't such things be left for the gods?"

Captain Gunharr grins wide and slaps Orm on the back.

Image

You were right in pickin' this one Osvauld. My sentiments exactly Orm! Odin gave us 17 of the 18 runes he found. There must have been a reason he kept the last a secret. If'n it was my choice, I'd leave the last rune on Helluland with the gods. Alas.... I'm no King and decisions like that are left to those men with thrones and crowns. But our king puts too much trust in Melkorka . If she weasels her way to the last rune and aims to keep it for herself..one of you good Viking lads has to stop her. The bard's in her favour too, but I don't get the sense he's for her if you catch my meaning.

Osvauld nods at Orm's response and smiles slightly. "We are bound by oaths of loyalty to obey our King and seek this rune to which man has no rightful claim. If the gods resist our attempt we will surely die trying, but at least we will die as true warriors. And who knows? Perhaps the gods will be impressed by our courage and integrity. If found, we will make sure the rune is brought to the King, and not stolen by ... anyone unworthy."

Captain Gunharr nods his approval and places an arm on both Orm and Osvauld.

Image

You shall both serve our king and the gods lads! I'm thankful Odin saw fit to send me you two pearls in a sea of coal.

The cabin door to Melkorka's private chambers swings open as Torvog (The Icebraiker's jailor) and the witch walk out onto the deck. Torvog looks frightened and runs across the deck to the hold on the other side of the ship.

Melkorka walks slowly behind him and eyes the three Vikings talking quietly in the dark. Her eyes rest on Osvauld for a time as she passes.

Image

Osvauld... Gunharrr... Who is this one! He reaks of destiny as do so many others on this ship. Pleasant night for a secret meeting yessssss?

She walks right past the three Vikings, not waiting for a response, and cackles to herself as she continues on to the hold.

So many will die and soon. Hope you have what it takes eh boys? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

The sight of the witch chills Orm's bones. If it was up to him he would slay the witch without question. Old crones like her can never be up to any good.

"So what is we to expect in Helluland? Where is the ruin located or is that for our witch to divine?" Orm asks knowing that a warrior must be properly prepared for the dangers he will meet.

Captain Gunharr nods at Orms sound thinking.

Image

Helluland is a vast flat rocky island Orm.... It will be covered in snow this time of year. We had planned to make sleds with driftwood and use the horses to cover the ground, but now, I don't know what we will do with this grim prophecy hanging over heads like a noose.

Captain Gunharr looks around to make sure they are the only one on the deck. He moves in closer and lowers his voice to a whisper.

I'll tell you what I was told by the Viking King himself before we set out. The witch has a scramasax that has been enchanted in some way. As were two others..... They are connected somehow. I do not understand such things but we were told that the first scramasax will find Odin. The second blade will find Thor. The third will take us to Asgard. I know.... it sounds mad. All three blades can also be used to find the other. It's as I said... they are connected.

Captain Askil's witch Gelga has the first scramasax. Melkorka that old hag.... has the second. That's all I know.. Each captain was told in secret the plans of the ship sailing ahead. I assume the third scramasax will journey to Helluland on the third Viking ship. It's captain was kept secret.... even from me.

"Hmm. It's hard to plan when we know our ship will meet disaster. Unfortunately, I think the best we can do is guard the witch so that she can find the rune." Osvauld runs a hand through his beard. "Of course, if we're guarding her, we also have the best chance to keep an eye on what she's doing."

Excellent.... I'm glad I can count on the both of you.

Captain Gunharr reaches into his belt and pulls out a piece of parchment. He hands it to Osvauld.

Image

This is the Kings' seal. I won't be needing it for much longer. Your bretheren are bound by honor and will have to face Odin's judgement if they do not follow he who holds it. Do not let Melkorka get her hands on it.... She will use the seal to her own purposes, you can count on that! And do not use the seal unless you must. Hold to your own strengths before you turn to the gods for aid.

Captain Gunharr looks out to the sea.

Osvauld sees the odal rune inscribed into the inlaid silver. No doubt, as the gods demand it, the rune of Odin will be written in the King's own blood on the scroll itself.

Orm is silent. What is this quest they have set out upon? A grave in a land cold as Hel's embrace seems as a likely outcome of the whole affair.

Osvauld is grave as he accepts the parchment. He tucks it into his belt and grasps Gunharr's arm. "You have served the king with strength and wisdom. Your last duty will be to lead these men to Valhalla. If the gods will it, we will come join you there."

Captain Gunharr smiles grimly....

Image

If you should fall on this quest lads... may the gods speed your way to Valhalla..... I leave you to your thoughts then. Trust in each other brother Orm and brother Osvauld. Trust in no others.

Captain Gunharr walks away from the two Vikings leaving them to discuss their plans.

Osvauld reaches out to grasp Orm's arm and smiles sadly. "Well, brother, it seems that the gods have chosen us for this quest. I am glad to have such a wise companion.

It seems that we must protect the witch for now, and help her to find the rune. And then we can guard the rune, from her if need be. Do you know anything of the bard she's traveling with?"

Just then, the door to the hold opens and Torvog the jailer escorts Orm's friend Weoulf out onto the deck at mace point. Weoulf has a frightened look on his face and seems to be glancing behind as Torvog prods him forward.

Image

Move it Weoulf! It won't be over anytime sooner if'n yah drag your ass!

Then from just behind Torvog and Weoulf hobbles Melkorka. Giggling and cackling to herself, grinning greedily up at Weoulf, the witch wrings her hands like an old dish towel as she walks. She passes right by Orm and Osvauld and scowls at them as she walks by. Weoulf doesn't say a word to Orm as they pass. Melkorka, however, revels in the opportunity to speak and turns around to adress Orm and Osvauld.

Image

The Captain left you out here then, eh boys? Maybe to keep an eye on old Hudinn up there.

She points up to the sails and everyone can see a black Raven perched atop the highest mast. Never caught the attention of one Odin's damned birds before... We must be doing something right eh boys?

Melkorka reaches out to touch Orm with one of her long nailed, dirty fingers and then falls short just a few inches from his chin.

......or something terribly wrong..... who knows with dem black chickens flying about. It's cold out her Osvauld... You can join me in my private chambers if you wish to warm your bones..... and any other extremities?

Torvog standing behind Melkorka and Torvogshakes his head and mouths the word "No" to Orm and Osvauld.

Melkorka smiles and turns her wicked smile back to Weoulf

I have seen this man in a vision Osvauld.... He who has been marked by time! I wish to question young succulent Weoulf in private. What were you and the Captain up to would be a better question. What point in preparing for the inevitable eh? Ha Ha Ha Ha!

In his deep voice, Osvauld recites:

All will prove true that thou askest of runes --
those that are come from the gods,
which the high Powers wrought, and which Odin painted:
then silence is surely best.

The Witch closes her eyes as Osvauld recites the Eddas. She seems to enjoy every word as if it were dear to her heart. When he finishes, Melkorka grins devilishly.

Image

So then chosen one.... I assume Gunnharr has told you much. No matter... All I require from you is your loyalty. Come Torvog. My... interrogation awaits.

With that Melkorka turns around and hobbles back to her private chambers. She glances back to make sure Weoulf and Torvog are following.

Weoulf mouths the words "Help me!" to Orm before the witch turns back.

Torvog then gives Weoulf an apologetic look before he pokes his mace into his ribs and prods him along after Melkorka like a suspicious cow to the slaughter.

Alirk approaches Osvauld. I guess the witch is off having her fun with her new toy. Oh how I would love to gut that bitch and throw her overboard. It's just a shame that she is the most powerful being on this ship, and anyone who tried anything would be dead before they knew it. Alrik ponders the thought of killing her for a moment before speaking again. The time of the prophecy is near. I fear this ship will be at the bottom of the ocean before we know it. We should prepare so that we may be included in the survivors. Although I fear that only our deaths await us once we reach land.

Osvauld raises his eyebrows at Alirk's strong words and lets a quiet moment pass before replying.

"Well, bard, you are a surprise. Why are you with the witch if you despise her so?

"Yes, this ship will meet its doom soon. Do you fear death? You are young."
His gaze becomes thoughtful. "How would you propose that we prepare for the inevitable?"

"Stay at our side boy and we will see to that you will survive. At least a little time more. I believe that my doom lies in this forsaken land of ice and I do welcome it, but you are young and full of life. I have been dead for many winters now" Orm states grimly.

Alrik looks at Orm with a look of disdain. You dare call me boy. Watch your tongue or you'll be the next to visit the witch in her chambers. Alrik turns to Osvauld and continues. I have never made my hate for the witch a secret, but she needs my magic, and it is my duty to help her. I do not fear death, but I would prefer it to be in battle not at the bottom of the ocean. We could prepare by checking the longboats and maybe putting some supplies in them that will be helpful like water and food.

occ I loved the boy comment btw. Alrik is very vain, but he also commands magic so he is right below the witch in authority. So I have to play accordingly.

Osvauld considers the bard's advice. "Yes, those are good preparations to make. We will see to it ... with subtly. It is best that the men on this ship aren't all aware of our upcoming doom. Not all men face death like they should, and the Captain has given his orders, so there is nothing for them to gain by knowing what is to come." He looks grim. "They will find out soon enough."

oc - There is no shorter longboat. You can still perepare however by moving food and other supplies into carefully hidden locations on the upper deck.

Alrik, Osvauld and Orm go to work gathering food and supplies in secret. They load food and equipment into sacs when they can during the three days the witch had forseen it would take the Ice Breaker to finally land on Helluland. The mood of the Viking ship picks up with the wind and less rowing is required of the men. Alrik often sings and plays for the oarsmen, retelling old Viking Sagas and often quoting the Eddas that seem most appropriate. The three men meet secretly with Captain Gunharr on several occasions to discuss their preparations.

ooc - This is only a half post. But if you have any ideas that you would like to give the captain to prepare the IceBreaker for its impending doom please write them here.

Orm is careful not to wash and he also makes things worse by applying animal fat and grease to his face and body. If the IceBreaker indeed will be swallowed by the sea, Orm will be properly prepared to greet the cold embrace of the ocean.

oc- ok guys I'm back in the swing of things and am ready to rumble. Just waiting a few posts for the Viking lads in the cell to catch up. A few posts and we'll be in sink.

In the next few days Osvauld sees the witch enter the prisoner's hold often, each time she emerges with a new prisoner and has Torvog the jailer escort him to her private chambers. After Weoulf, she takes Oddlog then Berger and then finally Edgar and Hildegarr. Sigfurd, recovering from his injuries sustained in the brawl below deck is spared as is Ingvar.

Orm spends his time gathering supplies in secret, preparing for the upcoming doom the witch had foretold.

Captain Gunharr spends most of his time alone in his own quarters, preparing in his own way for his journey to Valhalla.

What was that witch doing with the prisoners? Orm did not dare find out. He would not admit this to anyone but he had never been scared of a man like he was fearful of that witch. Would putting an axe in the back be enough to get rid of a creature like that?

Two days pass and on the third day, as the witch prophesized, a call echoes across the Viking ship Icebreaker.

Land! Land! We've Come to Helluland! Wake up lads! Helluland!

Osvauld and Orm are both sleeping on the deck close to their supplies as the deck watchman sounds his call late into the morning. The sun, a rarity in these lands, beats down on their heads. It's difficult to find the proper time for sleep in these waters, with the darkness setting in close to 1 in the afternoon and persisting until mid morning.

"It seems that our time has come, Ousvald. Let's see if we can discover that rune before the witch!" Orm is content that the eventless voyage soon is over. Orm is sure that he will find his doom in Helluland and he longs for it as much as he longs for his long lost love. Death can not be swift enough!

Alrik walks up behind Ousvald and Orm and pats them on the back. Well today is the day gentlemen. Hopefully we can take as many of our brethren with us as possible. Even if it means slitting that foul witches throat and watching her sink to the bottom of the ocean. Alrik chuckles softly. We all know that's not going to happen, but we can still dream.

Captain Gunharr comes charging out onto the main deck of the Icebreaker and looks out onto the sea. Sure enough, land moves ever closer on the horizon. Tall snowy mountains jut up from the shoreline. He immediately begins shouting orders.

Image

Watchman report!

The deck watchman races to Gunnharr’s side and updates the captain.

We’re just three miles off of Helluland’s shores my Captain. We’ll be there sooner than we thought. We’re off course! The fog parted like soup. The witch’s winds carried us too far up the inlet.

Gunharr looks over at Osvauld and Orm and grimaces.

Hope you’re ready lads! Now quick, join me in the war room. We’ve strategies to make and we’re way off course!

Bard!!! Summon that whore master of yours. Her evil winds have betrayed us all!

Captain Gunharr has his watchman gather a few more of his advisors before he storms back into his private quarters which in times of war doubles as his war room.

Hurry boys. I want a word in fore the witch sticks her warty little cunt in our affairs.

Captain Gunharr quickly closes the door behind Orm and Osvauld after making sure that noone is listening.

Image

It’s time lads! Either we land on Helluland and make our way to the mountains or the witch’s prophesy comes to pass and the Icebreaker sinks into the sea. You know what you have to do. The witch will no doubt have concocted a way off the Icebreaker. Make sure you’re with her in the end. Don’t let her read the rune lads. Odin had reason for keeping it from the hearts of men and I’m sure it was so evil hags like Melkorka couldn’t get their dirty fingers on it. Remember though boys, you can’t kill her cuz you won’t find it without her. Be careful… She will try to keep it. Hand it personally to the King. Don’t let any of them hags have it. It will be the ruin of the free world. I’m sure of it.

Gunharr looks at the two Viking warriors gravely.

Quick now... Ask yer thoughts fore the witch rises her slag self from her nest.

Meanwhile just across from the Captains quarters, Alrik bangs on the witch’s door. The witch invites the bard in and he is caught by surprise as Melkorka is changing. Boils and hairy growths of all sizes and description speckle the witches back. Her spine stretches the skin and Alrik swears he sees a pussy boil on the arch of her backside explode as she reaches for her robes. She turns and grins wickedly at Alrik.

Image

You like what you see bard? There is no time for pleasantries Alrik! We’ve a prophesy to fulfill!

Melkorka slides into her robes turning as she does so. Alrik quickly turns his head away from her, sparing himself the horrifying image of the witch’s naked front side.

Come quickly. We must learn of Gunharr’s plans before we tend to the prisoners. If they are meant to survive the foretold disaster, we must stay close if we are to survive as well. Hurry now bard, Help me gather my things! We’ll need plenty of parchment and oils. Have you prepared yourself for the journey or must I plan for the two of us.

OOC- (Orm, Osvauld and Alrik) please make a note of anything you want to bring that will fit in a sac. Bring as many weapons as you want within reason. If you have any special requests for equipment that you might have brought, you can pm me. No need to mention components for runes or magic. If you can cast the spell you have what you need. I’m talking about extra blankets, rope etc… If you can’t think of it now, you don’t have it. If you want to keep anything a secret, please pm me with your request as well.

OC- Alrik go to the Prison hold with Melkorka. You can say soemthing before you head back to the war room.

Melkorka gathers her things and then puts a sheet over her caged head. She ties one end to a string and loops it around a carved wooden staff. She also gathers some dark oils and Alrik has no doubt they are poison. The witch opens a cabinet and pulls out several daggers with runes scribed all over them. Alrik knows them to be scrying knives, required for inlaying weapons and armor with runes for battle. Alrik has the songs and the experience in activating such runes, but never before had he seen an actual scrying knife. A priceless artifact and Melkorka has three. She hands one to Alrik.

Image

Take this Bard. It’s time you earned your keep! Now come… We’ve prisoners to free before we bid Gunharr and this cursed vessel farewell.

ooc – Alrik.. with the scrying knife, you can carve runes into swords, armor and just about anything to get it a permanent rune that just needs magical power to activate. All other runes, carved with regular knives or simply drawn have limited power and can only be used once. This gift is a big deal.

Inside the war room, Captain Gunharr holds his meeting. He unravels a large map showing the east side of Helluland and begins to set wooden carved ships onto it. The first ship he places deep into Helluland’s eastern most inlet.

Image

The first ship, led by Captain Golauf and her witch Adriola was meant to come aground here where they were to complete their campaign against the Skraelings occupying the Eastern shore before the Ice Breaker arrived. We carry mountain climbing gear and extra supplies for our Viking brothers for the journey into the mountains. We were meant to follow her in, but that damn witch’s winds blew us off course.
(oc- Skraelings is Viking for native)

Gunharr places the second ship far up the coast from where they were supposed to land with Captain Golauf’s boat.

We could make up the time and continue along the eastern shoreline until we reach the rally point, but we all heard Melkorka’s prophesy. We’re to sink before we reach Helluland. If that be the case, I’d rather we change plans and head straight in than risk the Ice Breaker further up the inlet and then. Once we get the ship aground, we can continue west on foot and horse.

Captain Gunharr looks determinedly around at all the men at his table. His most entrusted Vikings.

Image

Osvauld, his second in command and moral compass.

Image

Giliog, his head Oarsman,

Image

Orm, Osvauld’s trusted companion.

Image

Dorgon, his chief navigator

Image

Logain, his military strategist.

Image

And Tristan his expert in Mountaineering and Northern survival.

Gunharr guages each man's response to his suggestions before finally asking word from his advisors.

What say you all?

Orm has packed his things as well. He has packed similar things as Osvauld perhaps a bit more rations than the younger man.

OOC: Water, a rope, sword, an axe, a dagger, a shield, rations, a blanket, a pair of extra socks, 3 torches, some tinder or other equipment for making fires.

"A wise course, Captain." Osvauld is glad to see that his Captain is taking the prophesy seriously, but nevertheless still trying to fulfill his duties.

[ooc-yes, Osvauld will bring extra climbing gear]

Tristan runs his index finger along the map of the Eastern Shore of Helluland.

Image

There are far more mountains along this shoreline than we had planned for had we landed further up the inlet. The horses won’t make it unless we go around the mountains. We’ll have to abandon them once the path becomes too difficult. We can make though Captain and if the witch’s words ring but a bit of truth, I’ll be happier once we’re on Helluland, no matter the terrain.

Gilliog remains silent but grunts in his usually complaining manner when Tristan suggests the route planned will be a difficult one. Logain, however, suggests the witch’s prophesy be ignored.

Image

If we are to base our entire plan of attack against the Skraelings on an old hag throwing bones into an old tin cup then we’ve lost out damned minds Captain. We should press on! The Dragonsbane (First boat already on Helluland) waits for our supplies and won’t last long in them mountains without em! We can’t be underestimating the locals Gunharr! Remember what happened with those bloody Scots and their savage ways.

oc – Skraelings is what the Vikings called the natives.

Gunharr takes in each of his men’s words carefully and then reaches a decision.

Image

Get your boys a rowin’ Gilliog. Straight for shore! We’ve Skraelings to be killing fore this long night be done with. I’ll deal with the witch.

Captain Gunharr folds up his map of Helluland and passes it to Tristan. He whispers something in his ear and Tristan runs out of the room. Captain Gunharr grabs a small keg of ale from his personal stock and spreads out some glasses on the table. He spills ale over all the glasses and the table taking little care in his work. He slides the glasses one by one to his men before hoisting his into the air.

Now hurry lads and prepare yourself for the worst. If you wind up in Odin’s hall this morning, look for me. I’ll have a lass in each arm and a fresh pint for all me boys!

Gunharr drains his glass and sits back down at his table with his own thoughts heavy on his mind.

Everyone leaves the war room in their own fashion. As Osvauld and Orm file out they find themselves cornered by Logain and Dorgan. Tristan and Gilliog had dissappeared into the rowing deck to get things moving.

Image

Logain looks at Orm and Osvauld with bitterness in his eyes.

I see you back the Captain Osvauld....... and you Orm. Can ye not see the folly of this. To trust in that hag with our lives!

Osvauld returns Logain's gaze. In a low voice, he says, "To trust the hag with our lives would indeed be foolish. But it is not her we trust. We saw the vision from the gods, and it is them that we trust. We trust the gods and follow our Captain, who has our rightful allegiance." He pauses a moment, and adds, "We all die, Logain. Better for it to be while serving our gods and king."

As if on cue, Melkorka emerges from the Prison Hold and grins at all the Vikings of importance gathered on the deck. She then quickly shuffles her way back into Captain Gunharr’s war room for a word with the Captain in private.
After a short while, the prisoners file out one after the other. First comes Oddlog and his devilish partner Hildegarr. Then Edgar and Berger. They were soon followed by Ingvar, Weoulf and Sigfurd who seems to have fully recovered from his wounds suffered in the brawl below deck just a few days ago.

Image

Oddlog points at Orm and mumbles something to Hildegarr.

Image

Hildegarr snickers and the two return below deck for some of Gilliog’s ale.

Image

Berger, the hopeless drunk, follows quickly behind them, eager to resume his debauchery.

Sigfurd salutes and smiles at Orm as he walks into the morning light and the fresh air gives him a burst of energy.
Image

Orm! Brother! It’s too bad you could not join us in the hold old friend. Weoulf here got himself a good ass raming from the witch!

Sigfurd pats Weoulf on the back in good fun before joining Orm and Osvauld in the Viking circle.

Weoulf drops his head in shame, his time in the hold had obviously having taken a toll on him.

Image

Edgar stays with Weoulf offering him some comforting words in private.

Ingvar follows hooting and hollering at the fresh air and the thought of battle. Everyone hears Ingvar shouting in Oddlog's and Hildegarr's direction as they disappear below deck.

Image

"First I'm gonna get me some chow and maybe kill a local, but then you're MINE"

Grinning from ear to ear with excitement, Sigfurd continues…

So tell me Orm, has the time away from your friends raised your spirits any or do you still mourn the loss of your beloved so much it has made you lame as a sacked horse?

Sigfurd smiles brightly at Orm and puts his arm on his shoulder... clearly glad to see his old friend.

All the Viking men on the deck stare out at the approaching isle of Helluland. it grows bigger on the horizon with each passing second. Logain and Dorgan move away from the group. Dorgan, the chief navigator pulls out his map and looks up at the sail. Everyone on deck can hear the Viking Oarsman below grunting in unison ith each row, pushing them further to glory.

Sigfurd looks up at Osvauld... Gunharr's man and takes a more serious tone.

Image

How long til we reach land sir? All that time in the hold has made me and Ingvar thirsty for land.

Dorgan calls back..

Image

1 hour... Ready yourselves lads...

Sigfurd nods and looks back to Osvauld.

Where's the Captain? Shouldn't he be on deck for this?

Osvauld glances toward the captain's quarters. "He'll be here. He is making final plans, I believe." He surveys the men gathered on the deck, and raising his voice to be heard by all, says,

"We are here, men, ready to meet the unknown and conquer it. We will fight valiantly. Some of us will soon reach our rewards in Valhalla, others of us will have to wait and instead return victorious to our king. This is what we were born to do. Remember, men:
Praise day at even, a wife when dead,
a weapon when tried, a maid when married,
ice when 'tis crossed, and ale when 'tis drunk.

So let us try our weapons, cross this ice, and finish all with some good ale!"

Helluland is now no more than a mile off as the Icebreaker plows her way through the dark ocean. It’s tall mountains, seen only from the Eastern shoreline, stretch high into the sky as they carve their way into the mainland.

Melkorka finally steps out with Captain Gunharr from their long conversation in the war room. By the looks on Gunharr’s face, the captain is not pleased in the slightest.

Image

Dorvog…. Report!

Dorvog steps forward and updates Gunharr.

Image

Ready yourselves lads... We’ll be landing in minutes Captain. The ice flow is minimal. We should be able to pull the Icebreaker right up to the beach.

Logain smiles and cuts Dorgan off.

Image

Seems the witch was wrong Captain. Maybe we’ll be meeting with our boys inland after all! Bah! Runes… the gods say what they will, when they will, with little concern for our affairs.

Melkorka scurries up to Logain with amazing speed for a woman of her age and appearance. She sticks a boney finger in Logain’s face.

Image

Blasphemy! The gods have their eyes on this vessel and all those upon it. Odin’s Ravens follow us all the way from Asgard.

Melkorka points up to the sky and indeed a Raven circles the Icebreaker. Then Dorgan, still keeping watch on the water calls out to his Captain, a maddening look of terror in his eyes.

There’s a storm coming Captain… It’s…… come out of the mountains. It’s headed right for us!

Everyone on the deck of the Icebreaker looks up to see a thick, dark storm cloud, snaking it’s way through the mountains and over the Ocean. It was at least a half mile wide and the same distance long. The storm cloud moved like no weather the Vikings had ever seen on their many voyages at sea. It moved with purpose and was heading right for them. Thunder roared out across the ocean as if Thor himself was hammering the mighty Mjolnir against a host of shields. Then the storm cloud flashed bright as forks of lightning struck out at the sea with a terrible fury. As the cloud moved closer to the Icebreaker, neither the thunder, nor the lightning ceased. The storm would soon be on top of them and everyone on deck could hear the hollow, unmistakably human sound of chanting. A woman’s voice in a foreign tongue echoed across the water, adding a dreamlike quality to the horror unfolding all around them.

Osvauld places a hand on Orm's shoulder. "Listen to the chanting, this is the work of someone else." In a low voice, he adds, "Remember our mission." He turns to watch the witch's reaction to the coming unnatural storm.

The witch stares up at the sky as the storm cloud rushes towards them. She looks around the ship and her beady eyes rest on Weoulf and Edgar. She licks her lips greedily and then gazes at the coming storm.

Gunharr hears Orm’s accusation and grabs the witch by the robes and flings her against the rail of the Icebreaker.

You doom us all with your magics witch! Is this your doing Melkorka? I can hear a woman’s voice at the heart of this madness. Is it your devil tongue witch! Answer me!

Melkorka cowers under Captain Gunharr’s forceful grip.

This is not my doing Gunharr. Release me so I can prepare our defenses….

The storm cloud begins to funnel overtop of the Icebreaker. A giant bolt of lightning arcs down from the smoky gray menace, striking the front sail and setting it ablaze. Thunder cracks overhead as another bolt arcs from the sky.

BOOOOOOOOOM!

OOC – Everyone roll luck. And tell me where you are on the ship. Plus post what you say and do if you are not struck by lightning. Post your exact rolls please. Also if you are near the rail of the ship, roll spot hidden.

Sigfurd is with Ingvar wherever he decides to be.
Edgar and Weoulf are at the rear of the ship close to the prison hold. They have hardly moved much in the 1hour since Helluland was spotted.
Oddlog, Berger, Hildegarr and Gilliog are below deck manning the oars with the rest of the crew )- some 30 Vikings.
Torvog, the jailer is with Alrik wherever he decides to be in light of the lightning striking the Icebreaker.

As the storm cloud passes, four bolts of lightnig arc from the sky striking the uppr deck of the Icebreaker.

One bolt strikes the front mass again, showering the deck with pine splinters.

The second strikes a small stockpile of armor next to the prison hold at the front of the ship.

The third bolt hits the cluster of Vikings gathered around Captain Gunharr. Neither is hit directly as the bolt makes it's way to the deck. Alrik and Orm almost seem to see the lightning coming and dive clear of the blast. Logain, Dorgan, Ingvar and Melkorka are flung into the air and land in the middle of the deck. (2 damage) Osvauld and Gunharr are flung forward.... up and over the rail.

The fourth bolt crashes down onto Edgar. To Weoulf’s horror and disbelief, Edgar's head pops right off of his body as the bolt of lightning courses through his body. He falls lifeless to the deck. Weoulf is flung back down into the prison hold.

Ooc- Osvauld I need a grapple check to grab onto the rail of the icebreaker. Edgar rolled a 100 for his luck check.... very bad

Both Osvauld and Captain Gunharr are hurled over the side of the Icebreaker and splash into the freezing cold arctic water.

Both men surface at the same time gasping for relief from the cold. Osvauld sees Gunharr reach for his sword. He pushes Osvauld aside as a giant horned whale surfaces beside the two Vikings and lunges towards him. No more than a foot away from the great beast, Osvauld can see it's eye flash an unatural redness as it thrusts itself at Captain Gunharr.

Image

The Captain cries out to everyone on board the Icebreaker...

Narwhales!!!

Image

Orm, worried for his friend, looks out to see and through the crashing waves and rain from the storm cloud overhead, he can see them. At least a dozen Narwhales heading right for the Icebreaker.

Melkorka rises quickly to her feet and leaps to Alrik’s side. She looks over the edge of the Icebreaker and spotting Osvauld and Gunharr swimming for their lives…grins. She then squints and puts a jewel encrusted listening cone to her ear looking out to the mountains of Helluland. She immediately drops the cone and covers her ears shrieking in pain. The cone hits the deck of the Icebreaker and turns and tumbles towards the Captains quarters. Melkorka hisses at Alrik.

Image

This magic is powerful bard! We can only hope to match its power.

She begins to chant along with him, though her voice sounds more like a Halberd being scraped across a line of chain. The Storm begins to die down for the briefest of moments before it catches its second wind and growls down at the crew with hurricane force winds. Melkorka reaches into her pockets and pulls out a few dark black stones. As Alrik’s voice echoes out over the ocean, she pulls out her small scramasax and scratches wildly on the surface of the stones. Her eyes dart from side to side, seemingly searching for something.

Where is Weoulf? Dammit bard! Find him! I will send this witch to Hel. She dare defy the will of the gods!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Meanwhile,

Orm holds out his handS to Osvauld, but he is too far below the railing to reach him.

Oc – Orm will need another 6 feet or so. Viking ships are low but not that low. Plus the added difficulty of the oars paddling all about him might prove problematic.

Ooc - Orm roll idea (1d100) unless you have one.

Logain shakes himself off and rushes to help Orm. He calls for the Captain but he seems to be busy struggling for his life.

Note

Ooc- All players…To save time, I ask for lots of rolls at once. I may not use them all, but it’s easier to roll and post them the same time. Then I will take the ones that apply, rather than posting one line blurbs back to each other asking for die rolls. If you are uncomfortable with invisible castle I could roll for you. This is a game, however, and I feel it’s more fun when you roll yourself.

Ooc - Swim check will allow you to strike freely without any circumstance penalties. A failed roll doesn’t mean you drown. Many failed checks are a different story…

Init = 1d10 + DEX
Strike = 1d100
Parry = 1d100
Damage = 1d8+1 damage plus damage bonus. If you don't know your damage bonus, please look on the table in the main Helluland indx.
Swim = 1d100
Luck = 1d100

Parry – If you are not familiar with the parry rules, every round you are allowed one parry and one strike if you are holding a melee weapon. Your parry % is equal to your skill in the weapon you are using to parry with.

ooc - I allow someone to attack twice with a bow.

Any questions? Please pm me.. or post them on the Game questions OC thread.

Thanks and battle on!

Osvauld manages to keep himself afloat as a Narwhale rises to the surface of the churning sea. It’s long tusk stabs out at Osvauld, but he pushes it aside with his sword. The Narwhale lifts Osvauld up and out of the freezing cold water as he thrusts down with his Viking blade, digging deep into the Narwhale’s exposed head. (9 damage) Blood spurts from the creatures gaping head wound. At the time the Narwhale lifted Osvauld out of the water, he was level with the Icebreaker’s rail, but as luck would have it, his friends were busy seeing to his rescue and were not in a position to reach for him.

To Osvauld’s right, a second Narwhale stabs out for Captain Gunharr. Gunharr avoids the blow and grips the Narwhale’s long tusk as they both disappear below the water.

Ingvar and Sigfurd charge to the dragon boats on the port side of the Icebreaker. It’s unusual for a ship to carry lifeboats of any description, but Melkorka had insisted they bring two. Sigfurd began to loosen the ropes to one of the dragon boats as Tristan began to throw burlap sacs full of mountain climbing gear into the boats.

Image

We’ll need these boys. Don’t let anyone toss em out.

Tristan then disappeared below deck shouting behind him.

Don’t leave without me Ingvar!

Orm, having prepared for Melkorka’s prophesy, was ready to move at a moments notice. He quickly gathers some rope and tosses it out to Osvauld. Logain finds a long spear and holds it out over the water where Gunharr went down with the Narwhale.

Image

CAPTAIN!!!!

The oarsmen of the Icebreaker have now stopped rowing. Everyone can hear the men screaming from below deck.

Melkorka throws her stones into the sea and begins to chant wildly to the gods.

Alrik runs across the deck as lightning shoots down from the menacing storm cloud above. He dives past the headless Edgar and makes his way into the prison hold. Alrik enters the hold with Torvog, the jailer, following close behind. They both step into the hold, knee deep in water. The prison hold is rapidly filling with water and Alrik can see two long Narwhale tusks thrashing about near the back of the prison hold, trying their best to widen the hole they have made in the Icebreaker’s hull. Torvog whispers in Alrik's ear.

Image

Gods! We're doomed Alrik!

oc – Osvauld roll CONx5 to resist the cold.
oc – Orm roll to strike (1d100) to throw the rope. An easy enough task…. You don’t want high.
oc- Alrik spot hidden.
oc - Ingvar spot hidden.

oc- Everyone make a Sanity check except Osvauld.(who is far too cold and filled with adrenaline to lose his mind) If you fail your roll by more than 10%. You will be unable to act this round and take 1d6 sanity loss. If you pass then you loose 1d3.

Alrik noticesWeoulf floating face up in the water just feet away from the thrashing Narwhales. In the torchlight, Alrik also spots something small and agile swimming quickly under the water's murky surface between himself and Weoulf. Torvog seems to spot it too for he quickly pulls his mace and stands ready.

Osvauld’s body begins to tense up under the harsh cold of the arctic water. Still afloat, however, he spots the rope Orm had tossed towards him. The Narwhale thrashes out and tries to roll on top of Osvauld in hopes of drowning the Viking.

oc – Osvauld roll to grapple the rope. If you miss… roll swim.

Melkorka continues chanting and laughing at the sky cursing the voice from the mountains. The storm clouds part and the sea becomes calm. The Narwhales, however, press their attack.

Orm sees one of the whales begin to change as he approaches the Icebreaker. Floating on the surface of the water, its skin and blubber begin to fold into itself and feathers pop out of the great horned whale. The transformation begins to speed up until the Narwhale shrinks and wings sprout from its back. In the span of only a few seconds, the Narwhale becomes an Arctic gull and flies onto the deck. Two more gulls appear on the deck of the Icebreaker. Their eyes flash red as they begin their next metamorphosis.

oc – Orm roll Sanity check 0/1

Sigfurd stops untying the Dragon Boat and tries to help Ingvar gather his wits.

Dorvog grabs a handful of spears from the weapons cache on the upper deck. He launches one into the water, digging deep into an approaching Narwhale.

Alrik’s arrow misses its mark as the creature breaks the water. To Alrik’s surprise, a seal pokes its head out of the water and stares at Alrik. It’s eyes glow red in the darkness of the prison hold. The two narwhales stop their thrashing and their giant tusks recede back through the hole in the hull of ther Icebreaker.

Torvog stands behind Alrik, his mace at the ready.

oc – Ingvar roll a sanity check to continue. (+15 for Sigfurd’s help)

Orm tries his best to throw the rope, but he is surprised when he sees a narwhale transform to a seagull and then to some sort of human being. What witchcraft is this?! There is nothing else to do than to draw his sword and try to behead the warlock, witch or whatever this is and hope that it works!

OOC: Here is all my actions. Sorry for lagging!
Throwing rope and Sanity Check (in that order) (1d100=89, 1d100=37)

San check seeing transformation (1d100=100)

Total San loss (1d3 1=2)

Ingvar's eyes begin to focus on Sigfurd. He wipes drool off his mouth and stands up, leaning on his friend. "The boat Sigfurd.. loose the ropes!"

"ORM, YOU WOMAN!! GET IN THE DRAGON BOAT OR I'LL SPLIT YOU IN TWO WITH MY CAKK"

Ingvar turns and climbs into the boat cradling his fathers axe. He's holding his bloody head with the other hand.

oc - Alrik. Yes you can make two shots if you are not being challenged by anything. Right now the seal is looking at you so you get two shots. Take one more shot. Also, I added actual game effects to the spells you can use. Check the runes thread. Remember the witch can do much more by combing runes. Things that you just can't understand as a bard.

Having missed the rope, Osvauld leaves himself open for the Narwhale bearing down on him.

OC - roll dodge Osvauld.

Orm can't believe his eyes. The 3 gulls having landed on the deck begin to change. Their feathers pulse and turn fleshy and quickly begin to cover themselves in thick white fur. Their beaks grow long and toothy forming a powerful jaw covered in the thick white hair. Orm can't help but stare as the gull's wings ripple and expand into a fleshy hairy nightmare tipped with long black claws. Very quickly the 3 gulls twist and expand themsleves, forming huge powerful muscles in mere seconds. The only thing that remains even remotely the same is the glowing red of the creatures' eyes as they hold their icy stare on all those on the deck of the Icebreaker. 3 polar bears now stand in their place. They all roar in unison and stand their ground, growling and grumbling. They seem so close to lunging forward, but they hold their charge.

oc- Orm roll sanity again... You lost 5 sanity. I think you might have suffered some permanent psychological damage with that 00. We can deal with that later. Your friends are in trouble and a massive case of schizophrenia won't realy come into play here. (kidding but not that far off) If you fail your sanity roll, roll Conx5 or fall unconscious. If you pass then Orm is just really freaked out.

Sigfurd, cuts the ropes to the dragon boat and draws his sword and shield. The boat falls to the water with Ingvar inside it. It holds and seems undamaged from the short fall.

Image

Orm he shouts... Hurry... We have to get out of here!

oc - Ingvar roll DEX x5.

Melkorka runs to the dragon boat and pulls a long scramasax coated in the blackest of poisons. She stands beside Sigfurd and scoffs.

Image

Hah! Do you believe this is the way prisoners?

Then the Vikings arrive on deck. Oddlog, Hildegar, Berger and 6 or 7 others bleeding and terrified in their own right. Oddlog seems to have gone beserk and his axe is drawn. He charges the polar bears screaming his fury with Hildegarr close behind him.

Image

AAAAAAAAAGHHHHHH!

ooc - Ok,sorry for the lag boys and girl.

Melkorka raises her hands in the air as the Vikings, with Gilliog's whip driving them forward, storm onto the deck of the Icebreaker in a crazed bezerker panic. When the witch's hands drop to the ground a wave of heat flows over the ship and all in its path feel warm and toasty in the arctic air. The heat wave billows over the side of the ship and even manages to pass over Osvauld and Ingvar.

ooc – everyone is immune to the effects of the cold now. (But for how long?)

Melkorka calls out.

Swim for it yah dogs! The ship’s sinking fast.

Oddlog runs full on into the powerful arms of the lead polar bear. Slashing and cutting at the red eyed bear with a fury few could match. Hildegarr moves in as well, but with far more skill and cruelty, ducking blows meant for Oddlog and raking his two long scramasaxes across the arms and bellies of whatever beast got in his way. Only a few of the Vikings join Oddlog and Hildegarr in the battle with the polar bears on deck.

Osvauld, sees the rope, just meters away as he breaks the surface of the water after his last narwhale strike. He can feel the weight of his armor beginning to weigh him down. To make matters worse, Osvauld can see another of the great horned whales bearing down on him, its long tusk jutting out of the water as it charges. Stuck deep in the charging whale's head is Captain Gunharr’s sword.

ooc – Osvauld roll swim. If you pass then you can strike. If you want to be able to fight normally without the penalty, you could cut the straps to your armor. You no longer have to roll cold resistance checks either cuz of Melkorka’s spell.
Your choices are…..
1) Grab the rope and dodge the whale. (No swim check needed)
2) Grab the rope and attack the whale (Swim check required for attack roll)
3) Attack the whale and grab the sword (Swim check required for attack roll)
4) Dodge the whale and grab the sword (Swim check required for dodge roll)
5) Cut your armor straps and dodge the whale (Swim check required for the dodge roll but after you cu the straps you will not have to make future swim checks)

ooc - Orm… if you are going to run into melee, I need your Init, Strike, Parry, and Damage rolls. If not, then what do you do?

ooc – Ingvar… I need to know what you are doing even if its waiting in the boat.

ooc- Alrik… you too. The creature in the water is growing and coming for you. If you are running do so… or else, I need your Init, Strike, Parry, and Damage rolls.

ooc – Also everyone on ship or in the water, roll a Sanity check… no sanity loss if you fail. Just for an idea on how you are handling the whole crazy situation. Please play accordingly. If you roll badly… you can still act. You just might not be as brave as you thought you were.

Ingvar keeps his cool and maintains control of the dragonboat despite the chaos.
Melkorka calls out.
Swim for it yah dogs! The ship’s sinking fast.
"ROW Sigfurd, ROW - before we're swamped by wet Vikings"

Ingvar reaches over the edge of the boat, using his father's axe as a hook to grab hold of Osvauld who is trying to drown nearby. When he's close enough Ingvar tries to grab him but he slips out of his grasp.
"NnnARGHHH!!! OSVAULD YOU FAT BASTARD GET IN THE BOAT!!"

Sanity (75) (1d100=49)

Osvauld no longer feels the cold, and yet he shudders at the sight of his captain's sword separated from its owner. At least he died an honorable death, fighting this beast. But it would not be fitting were he not to attempt to slay the beast that killed his captain. The armor is weighing him down, but he has no time to deal with that as he attempts to attack the narwhale and grab the sword.

Swim (25) (1d100=38)

The three Polar Bears thrash out ferociously as the Viking hoard approaches. With both paws, the first of the three bears tears a charging Viking in two, spilling his insides all over the deck of the Icebreaker. Amidst all the confusion and horror, only one of the Vikings manages to connect with the first of the three bears. (4 damage)

Oddlog ducks under the second Polar Bear’s paw and digs his axe into the bear’s hind leg. (9 damage) The beast howls in pain. Hildegarr follows suit slashing wildly with his long scramasax. (4 damage) The third Polar Bear spots Orm, Dorgan and Logain charging into the fray from the bow of the boat.

The mighty Polar Bear lifts an arm and brings it crashing down on Dorgan’s face. His cheek splits like an unripe peach and Dorgan falls to the ground screaming and covering his mangled face.(9 damage) Partially blind and hysterical, Dorgan tries to drag himself away from the bear’s reach. The third Polar Bear ignores Dorgan and continues with his flurry of raking claws. Orm bats a claw to the side with his shield and then returns the blow, thrusting his sword into the bear’s side. (3 damage) Logain stabs out with his spear but misses the great white bear in the all the chaos.

Berger spots the dragon boat beginning to shove off from the port side of the Icebreaker… He runs and slides over the railing (DEX x5): Pass. Berger lands next to Sigfurd and grabs hold of the sides to steady himself.

Image

Shove off! Shove off!

Tristan heaves another large sac into the dragon boat. It rings with the clank of metal on metal. He calls down to Ingvar and then runs back down below deck.

Image

One more sac…. Wait for me Dammit!

Melkorka jumps inside the boat but overshoots her landing. Her legs buckle as they crash into one of the seating boards and she tumbles into the water shrieking.

Image

Aaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhh! Help me you fools!

Sigfurd, his eyes on Ingvar, shoves the Dragon Boat off and away from the Icebreaker. Ingvar reaches out for Osvauld with his long Huscarl Axe, but the Captain’s second is too preoccupied with all the dangerous creatures in the water.

Sigfurd eyes widen as he calls out.

Image

Two more to Port! Bloody Hell! Thy're coming in quick!

All the men aboard the Dragon boat with their wits about them turn to see two Narwhale tusks rising out of the water no more than 30 yards off. Like bone covered lances, they charge the Dragonboat.

The Narwhale with Gunharr’s sword jutting out from its head, swims right past Osvauld and digs it’s tusk into the hull of the Icebreaker. (ooc -rolled a 98) Osvauld grabs the blade and pulls it free as it swims by. The Narwhale tries to free itself from the ship’s hull and knocks Osvauld away. Osvauld’s armor begins to get the better of him and he starts to sink, his outstretched hand and sword barely above the wavy surface of the water.

ooc- Orm -initiative, strike, parry or run.

ooc- Osvauld -one last swim attempt. If you pass, you can swim for the Dragon boat or wherever pleases you. If you fail, you sink. And then we’ll have to deal with that..

ooc - Ingvar -You are out of range to reach Osvauld. You could swim for him. You aren’t wearing any armor as you’ve been in the brig. Other than that, there are two Narwhale’s rapidly approaching your boat.

ooc - Alrik -see next thread. I’m playing you separately so you don’t have to read the on deck stuff if you don’t want to.

Alrik fires another arrow into the water and finds his target. The arrow digs much deeper this time. (4 damage) Then from the dark torch lit water, a great two tusked walrus breaks the surface and lands directly on top of Torvog, his huge blubbery mass almost completely covering the jailer. (3 damage) Torvog falls flat under the weight and drops his mace into the water. He wheezes and gasps for air, his one free hand reaching out for Alrik.

Image

Aaaaaalrik!

The red-eyed Walrus turns its head, its tusks inches from Alrik’s face.

Take We-ulf man… You live more moons!

Orm strikes out at the polar bear slashing deep into its side with his Viking blade. (8 damage) Logain follows his lead and drives his spear into its back, bringing the creature howling in pain to the deck. It slashes out at the air in desperation before it slumps to the floor and lies still.

Oddlog and Hildegarr quickly bring down their own polar bear as well. Oddlog slashing wildly at the beast, knocking it on its back while Hildegarr leaps on his belly and delivers a flurry of quick cuts with his scramasax.

Oddlog holds his axe in the air and cries out his fury.

They can die… by Odin they can die! Kill em all boys!

The third bear sensing its immediate danger, bites onto a Viking’s head and then runs and dives into the water with its prey.

Logain turns to Orm and both men look to the stairs leading down into the rowing deck. Sea water is spilling quickly up and onto the top deck.

We have to get off the ship... It’s sinking fast! The Dragon boat! Damn you Melkorka… She’s leaving without us!

Meanwhile, Sigfurd readies his sword for the two Narwhale charging the Dragon boat as Ingvar lifts the witch onto the small dragon boat. He parries one long Narwhale tusk but the other stick him like a pig on a spit. (6 damage) Sigfurd slashes down on the Narwhale tusk protruding through his stomach. He slices it in two and both Narwhales disappear below the water. Sigfurd screams out in pain as he collapses onto the floor of the Dragon Boat with half the Narwhale’s tusk sticking through his rib cage.

Ingvar turns to see Osvauld’s hand sink below the water. It’s out of his hands now. Melkorka cackles and grins greedily at Ingvar as she finally lands herself in the dragon boat.

You can’t save them Viking! Shove off! Shove off! We must reach the shore!

Orm spits. "Cursed be she and her black heart! With those whales in there we will be massacred. If I will fall in battle it will be against real men, not these shape-shifting witches! Give me an axe! Perhaps we can use the mast as a floating device!" Orm suggests.

There are axes everywhere on the deck of the Icebreaker, Orm has his pick of the lot as Vikings begin to lose their nerve or their mind and drop their weapons before throwing themselves into the sea. They swim for shore with madness and fear in their eyes. It’s a long swim and the tusks of the Narwhales fill the ocean with blood and carnage.

Logain looks out onto the water and calls for Ingvar.

Ingvar! Don’t leave us! COWARD!

Ingvar seems preoccupied with his own difficulties and doesn’t answer.

Just a handful of Vikings remain standing in over a foot of rising water aboard the Icebreaker. The lower levels of the massive Viking ship are now completely filled. If Alrik, Weoulf and Torvog didn’t get out, they are surely drowned by now.

Oddlog runs up beside Logain and shakes his fist at Ingvar as leans over the railing.

You son of a whore Ingvar!

Hildegarr scowls and looks around as the water, now beginning to spill over the sides of the ship as the waves from the churning ocean find their way over the rail. He lowers his head in defeat!

We’re doomed!

Logain grabs hold of Orms’s armored shoulder as he picks up the axe. He grabs his own axe and lends a hand.

Yes brother! I’ll help you! C’mon lads get to it. There’s plenty of death for everyone! You’ll just have to wait your turn.

Both men get to work chopping down the larger of the two masts. The remaining six or seven Vikings with their courage still in tact quickly get the idea and go to work on the other smaller mast. Soon, both masts are down and Logain looks at Orm intensely for further instructions.

"Grab the mast or if you have the opportunity tie yourself to it! We can use the masts to float! I would not want to swim in this water!" Orm shouts. "We may yet live to see another dawn!"

After the Vikings chop both masts to the deck of the Icebreaker, Logain searches frantically for some rope and quickly uncovers a few sacs of thick hemp just sticking of the water. In a few more minutes, nothing will be visible on deck. Five Vikings had the presence of mind to stay with Orm and follow orders as they were given. Logain begins to uncoil the rope and passes it out to his men. A few of them tie loops aropund their waist as Orm recommended. The other's hold the rope loosely in their hands; scared and skeptical. Its obvious Logain is much more comfortable giving orders on the battlefield in comparison to all this chaos. His eyes are wild with fear.

Image

What now Orm!

Then Tristan appears through the water (from the lower submerged deck) carrying two sacs of his own. He wades frantically up to Orm and Logain looking out over the sea at the Dragon Boat, now more than 50 feet off.

Damn! Ingvar! Melkorka! Bastards!

Logain orders what few Vikings are left on the IceBreaker to do as Orm had ordered. It seems Logain has gladly taken to receive orders from Osvauld’s confidant. With a plan in motion, the war master is quick to mobilize his fellow Vikings.

Into the sea with it lads and kick for your lives. Scramasax’s out and to the ready. We’ll not be a meal to these demons without giving what’s been taken. Strap your shields and loosen your amour boys. If you’re taken, be quick to cut yer straps or you’ll sink like a bloody stone.

Logain waits for all the Vikings to do as they’re told.

Twelve in all strap themselves to two long masts. Orm Logain , Tristan plus three other Vikings take up one mast and Oddlog, Hildegarr, Gilliog and three oarsmen strap themselves to the second mast. One group after the other, the Vikings plunge themselves into the sea; kicking furiously for their lives with Orm’s team in the lead.

Orm kicks with all his might beside Logain as Oddlog and Hildegarr’s mast tumbles clumsily into the frothing sea. Now, closer to the water, the screams of dying men can be heard more clearly. The ocean is red with their kinsman’s blood. The six Viking strapped to the mast seem to be making some headway. Orm looks up and sees that the shore is just a few hundred meters away and getting closer. He looks back and sees that Oddlog’s team has fallen behind and they appear to be wrestling with some underwater opponent. Then Orm sees a long pointed Narwhale tusk break the ocean’s surface and begin its charge towards them. Before the Narwhale even arrives at Orm’s mast, one of the Vikings suddenly is pulled below the water. The other two Vikings cry out in fear and panic as the mast begins to dip down, the rope still attached to the unfortunate soul who was pulled under.

Tristan cries.

Gods! Someone cut the rope!

oc – initiative. Orm is on the opposite side of the mast where the Viking was pulled under. The Narwhales long tusk seems to be pointed in his direction. It will most likely target him or the man next to him. What do you do?

Ingvar helps Sigfurd up and the injured Viking grabs an oar. Melkorka seems to be enjoying the carnage all around her as she urges Berger and Ingvar to row to shore.

Row for your lives yah dogs. Leave the dead to Odin and the lucky few will make it! Row! Damn you Row!

Ingvar can see Osvauld swimming to catch up but the Viking Dragon boat, with so few passengers, is quickly gaining distance on Osvauld. (The captain’s second in command.) Ingvar will have to order the dragon boat to slow down if Osvauld is to make it. Then suddenly 2 white Beluga whale fins appear behind Osvauld. He hasn’t noticed them yet but they will be on him soon. All around the sinking Icebreaker, more and more Vikings scream and shout as they are pulled under in a white frothy explosion of blood and water.

"Aye, I'll row witch," Berger responds in a slurred voice to Melkorka. "I'll row and everyone be dammed!"

As Berger pulls on his oar, he begins to belt out a song, singing at the top of his lungs into the driving rain and up at the threatening storm clouds.

"Drink, for the wind blows cold and
Drink for The Wolf runs free.
Drink to the ships with sails like wings and
Drink to the storm-tossed seas.

Drink to the lasting nights
and those who warm our beds.
Drink to the mead that warms our hearts
and the cold that clears our head.

Drink to the Allfather's Eye
for Odin's sons are we.
Drink to the World-Tree where he hung
and the Runes of Mystery.

Drink to the truth of steel
and blood that falls like rain.
Drink to Valhalla's golden walls
and to our kinsmen, slain.

Drink to the Glory-field
where a man embraces death, and
thank the gods that we live at all
with our joyous dying breath!

Drink for the wind blows cold and
Drink for the Wolf runs free
Drink to the ships with the sails like wings
for Odin's sons are we!"

Orm draws his scramasax. (Viking long knife) It’s much easier to manipulate in these cramped conditions. He quickly cuts the rope and the Viking disappears beneath the frothing sea. They continue along undisturbed for some time. Orm has a chance to look around. He was sure he saw Osvauld reaching for Ingvar’s dragon boat but then he was suddenly gone. Pulled under like the poor Viking he just cut loose.

ooc – Orm tell me if you are heading for shore still or if you want to try and help anyone. It’s absolute chaos in these waters. No one would hold it against you if you kept paddling the mast to shore.

As Berger bellows his drunken ballad, he catches the wounded Sigfurd smiling and noding his head to the song. Then suddenly the Dragonboat comes to a sudden stop. A Narwhale has blocked the path leading to shore and a second tusk rises out of the water and stabs out at some unlucky soul aboard the Dragonboat.

ooc – Ingavar and Berger... your Dragon boat is stopped. One Narwhale has blocked your path while the other is stabbing up at your boat with his long tusk. I’ll need initiatives from you guys and strike/ parry/ damage rolls if you plan on moving anywhere anytime soon.

ooc - welcome G-Dizzle. If you've never used Invisible castle before here's how. First go to http://www.invisiblecastle.com and click roll dice. Under character write Berger. Under rolls write 1. Under dice write 1d10,1d100,1d100, 1d8, 1d6

Under decription write rolls

Those rolls are for initiative which in my game is DEX + 1d10. strike = 1d100, parry = 1d100 and is equal to your strike % with your sword, damage is 1d8 plus 1d6 for strength bonus. I find it easier to do all the rolls at once so I can then pick the ones that apply. It goes much quicker.

- OK good luck chiquita!

The Narwhale lashes out at Berger with it’s long tusk but Berger sidesteps the great horn, thrusting his sword into the creatures thick blubbery head. Blood sprays a beautiful fountain of thick red goo all over Berger and the witch who howls with pleasure.

Yes my chosen ones… Destroy these foul creatures! Send them back to the sea. Let Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Ingvar follows Berger’s lead and breaks the narwhale tusk in two sending a three foot piece of gnarled ivory to the floor of the Dragonboat.

The Narwhale cries out with an inhuman raspy voice before slipping back into the sea; it’s hollow red eyes glaring at Berger and Ingvar.

Aaaaggggghh! Damn you meddling humans! You’ll never reach the mountain!

ooc – Sanity check 0/1d6 (You've never heard a whale talk before)

Melkorka pulls a dark black stone from her robes and tosses it into the sea. The stone becomes a long shimmering Viking spear in mid flight and narrowly misses the red-eyed hornless Narwhale as it flees into the ocean depths.

The Narwhale, blocking the Dragon boat’s path, lifts the front end high into the air. The boat seems almost ready to tip before the whale drops it sending the front end crashing to water. Everyone on the dragon boat lurches forward finding it very difficult to keep their balance.

oc – DEXx5 rolls please.

Orm looks behind him and sees Oddlog and Hildegarr’s mast rise out of the water, dangling poor the Viking souls high into the air by the ropes attached to the mast. A great Orca whale like no beast Orm had ever seen has one of the Vikings in his mouth as he waves the pole about like like a tooth pick.

Orm's group continues paddling to shore.

With only a few hundred feet to go, Tristan looks back and with panic clear on his face, he cuts his rope and swims. Logain looks to Orm for some sort of instruction as Tristan quickly break away from the group. Tristan however wasn’t wearing any heavy armor like most of the Vikings aboard the Icebreaker.

We’re moving too slow! What should we do Orm?

OOC -1 is the best roll you could get G-Dizzler. For Berger the drunk, it's all just par for the course. Most of the time, the furniture is singing ballads... whales talking are no surpsise!

ooc - yes it is 1d6. One could easily go quite mad when dealing with talking whales.

The dragonboat crashes back down to the ocean surface and everyone aboard keeps their footing. The whale's thick white skin begins to boil as the creature's fins turn to massive white paws covered in bloody patches of white fur and sharp dark claws. The paws grab hold of the side of the dragon boat and the beast begins to pull itself in.

ooc - one more sanity roll. 1d100. If you fail you can't act. If you pass then give me your action. (strike, damage, str bonus) or other.

oc - STR resistance check to pull your leg free. (sorry I rolld your attack and damage to speed things up)

Two of the four Vikings cut themselves free, panic clear on their face. Almost immediately one of them disappears below the bloody water taken by one of the many terrible beasts.

Logain gets his sword free. (successful DEXx5 check) He calls out to his fellow Viking.

Logain stabs down with all his might but dropshis sword as the whale thrashes about.

Berger stabs at the morphing creature with the heart of a true norseman. His sword simply grazes the beast (1 damage) as the bubbling skin and blubber turns quickly to matted fur. Melkorka makes room for Ingvar , stepping to the back of the Dragon boat, cackling wildly.

Kill it Kill it! We must reach the shore my chosen ones... Kill it! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Sigfurd still gravely wounded from the Narwhale tusk pulls it free from his chest and tosses it into the ocean in disgust. Ingvar lands a terrible blow on the creatures neck with his axe(7 damage), shooting a fountain of blood over Berger and himslef. Still, the creature pulls itself onto the boat until nearly half of the creature is visable above the water. A full sized polar bear, it roars and snaps it's jaws at Berger... falling just short of his buldging belly.

The boat rocks back and forth as the polar bear with red glowing eyes continues to heave it's hulking form further onto the dragon boat.

ooc - OK sorrry for the long pause.

ooc - I need Init 1d10, strike1d100, parry1d100, damage1d8, str damage bonus1d6, and DEx4 1d100. Almost to shore boys and girls... you just have to survive the masssacre. Don't fall in.

Melkorka removes two dark rune stones from her pouch and mutters a few words as the beast changes it’s shape.

Berger’s sword and Ingvar’s axe glow bright blue for an instant as the runestones quickly disintegrate in the witch’s hands and blow away in the wild sea breeze. Melkorka cackles wildly...

Kill it! Yes Berger! Kill it!

Ingvar and Berger both leap into action as the Polar Bear with flashing red eyes clumsily lashes out (half in half out of the dragon boat). Berger’s sword drives deep into the creature’s shoulder (7 damage) while Ingvar arcs his axe down hard on its’s skull. (7 damage) Both blades have little trouble piercing the beast’s tough matted fur after Melkorka’s enchantments.

The polar bear rears up in it’s fury, tipping the boat to the side. Melkorka holds tightly to Sigfurd who braces himself with both legs. The polar bear slips back over the side of the Dragon Boat followed closely by Ingvar and Berger. Both men crash into the water and are surprised that the ocean feels warm and inviting. Unfortunately their armor weighs heavily on the Vikings making it difficult to keep afloat. The dragonboat, dangerously near to toppling, rights itself.

ooc – roll swim Ingvar and Berger.

Ingvar reaches out for Sigfurd’s hand and his life long friend grabs it, screaming in pain for the gaping Narwhale tusk wound in his belly. Meanwhile, the sounds of Vikings screaming for their lives still echoe all around him. Ingvar looks up for a brief moment and sees that some of his Viking brothers have made it to shore. They have all drawn their swords and are holding the beach from all sorts of wolves and bears emerging from the waters.

As Sigfurd attempts to pull Ingvar into the dragonboat, something grabs hold of his bootleg, biting deep into his calf as it tries to pull him under. (6 damage)

oc – any dice check roll is 1d100. There is a resistance table in the cthulhu book that pits various ability scores against one another and provides a number. So Ingvar’s STR17 pitted against a Beluga’s strength would need a low roll. Sorry… you failed your STR check.

Sigfurd pulls desperately on Ingvar’s arms but the bright white Beluga whale is too strong. Still, Sigfurd refuses to give his friend over to the sea and continues to hold while the witch giggles nervously to herself and pulls out a rune stone; fingering it quickly in palm as the boat rocks violently from the struggle.

Then the entire Dragon boat topples over and Sigfurd and Ingvar slip into the sea.

As he sinks further and further in the Beluga’s tight grip, now pulling Sigfurd, Ingvar looks up and sees the witch standing on top of the water. She looks down and watches in horror as the two Viking brothers are pulled deeper and deeper into the ocean. .

Noooooo! My chosen ones. Noooooooooooo!

Melkorka turns and runs as little steps on the surface of the water sparkle as she moves towards the shore.

Now that Ingvar and Sigfurd are completely submerged, the horror of the whole scene is revealed. There must be thirty whales in the water plucking Vikings like grapes and tearing them to pieces. Others, like Ingvar, are being shuttled to a great white light in the deep. All around, seals and walrus are collecting gear and wreckage from the ship and drowned Vikings and currying it further into the light.

ooc – CON x6 check (1d100)

ooc – Sanity check (1d100) If you pass you lose 1. If you fail you lose 1d8. If you roll a 5 or more you gain some cthulhu knowledge and go temporarily insane.

ooc – Then I’ll need your action. Ingvar has a scramasax damage 1d4+1 + 1d6 str. No parry or dodge. Or you can spend your attack trying to free yourself. It’s only a 200 m swim shore.

Translation :

Ingvar kicks the Beluga in the face and the red eyed creature immediate releases his grip. Ingvar hurries to the surface but the Beluga does not follow. In the great light glowing beneath him, Ingvar watches as the Beluga instead grabs hold of the wounded Sigfurd. A moment passes between Sigfurd and Ingvar just before the great white whale snatches his Viking friend and darts deeper towards the light. The look on Sigfurd’s face was one of resignation and betrayal as Ingvar flees for his life.

Ingvar swims the first 20 meters towards shore unhindered by any of the aquatic beasts with the bright red flashing eyes. Two evil looking seals make feeble attempts to block his path; popping their heads to the surface and barking for assistance. Ingvar swings wide with his axe cutting one tiny head from its sealish shoulders, forcing the other wee creature to retreat.

Ingvar then looks forward and finds the witch running along the surface of the water, cackling wildly as she tosses rune stones into the sea. She stops suddenly, spotting Ingvar. Smiling wide, Melkorka runs back to him.

Hurry and swim chosen one… Tristan is already ashore… You must make it or we are all doomeed. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Then Melkorka's eyes widen as she points back to the water.

Swim Ingvar Swim!

She hops over Ingvar’s head, bobbing at the surface of the water, and meets the giant Beluga’s charge head on. The witch tosses a green colored runestone in the water in front of her. A jet of shimmering spray leaps up from the sea as the Beluga instead choses to dive low; heading directly in line for Ingvar. Ingvar hears Melkorka’s warning just in time to shift his body enough to avoid the red eyed whale’s bone shattering charge. As the whale passes, Ingvar swings his axe, sticking it deep into the white whale's side. His axe holds firmly in the whale as it carries him another 40 m or so to shore. Blood pours from its edge like a fountain. (16 damage, a piercing blow)

When the whale begins to turn, Ingvar pulls his axe free and continues to swim until suddenly his feet touch the rocky floor of the beach. The sounds of battle on the snow covered shore echo in and out of Ingvar’s ears as wave after wave crash over him and his head rises and sinks with each new movement of the sea. (Picture like in D-day - Private Ryan)

Vikings, scream from every direction as polar bears drag them back into the sea and the Vikings try their hardest to fend them off and regroup.
Ingvar can see Oddlog and Hildegarr on their knees close by, coughing on the beach with one other Viking as two massive white wolves with red glowing eyes prowl in from the side; camouflaged in the snow.

Ingvar is forced onto his knees as well, exhausted from the 100 meter swim to shore. Then Melkorka grabs him by the shoulder and shakes him to his senses…

Behind you!

Ingvar sees the massive shape of the giant Killer Whale; 15 feet high if it were a foot; its jaws wide open; teeth bared and heading straight for him… anger and hatred plain in its red pupil-less eyes. He calls out to Ingvar; his voice pounding through his skull like a hammer on stone.

The Giant Killer Whale beaches itself on the shore and Ingvar seems like a sealion standing so close to the gaping maw of Kor-Gamon. Ingvar stands his ground and slahes out with his mighty Huscarl. The whale's blubber parts like churned butter to the enchantment on Ingvar's axe leaving a long deep gash down it's neck and a stream of blood on the snow. The wound just enrages the Beast. Kor-Gamon thrashes out with his hard skulled orca head; the blow knocks Ingvar 20 ft across the snow. He skids to a stop; his shoulder throbbing with pain. The Witch hops over him in mid sprint, cackling wildly.

Heh Heh Heh! This foe is beyond you Viking.... But die here today if you will... there are many more chosen ones yet on this island. Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Melkorka's maddening laughter trails off as she run across the snow towards the mountains.

Kor-Gamon's skin begins to slough off as he slowly inches his way onto the shore. His teeth shorten and toughs of fur begin sprout along his backside like thick course weeds through the rich soil. Blubber melts away and muscle tightens and twists to a point beyond reason. The smell of the change on so large a creature hits Ingvar and his stomach churns. It's front fins grow thick and long black claws lengthen and sharpen at their tips. The claws cut the ice like a scramasax as Kar-Gamon drags its bubbling, pussy hulk towards Ingvar, gaining speed as it's new legs take form. The beast roars like nothing the Vikings had ever heard before. Vikings along the shore not occupied with being taken back into the sea or gutted like fish on the ice flee from the creature; looking back only because they can't bear not to.

Ingvar holds his chest, coughing blood into the snow. He stands weakly, and only stops to recover his axe before fleeing towards the mountains.

"Slow down witch!".

He staggers into the field of snow after her, glancing over his shoulder at the horrific beast he's trying to outrun.

Ingvar takes flight with the other surviving Vikings only to stop once he was clear of the beach and was sure nothing was following him. He turned to watch a small pack of white wolves with glowing red eyes tearing a Norseman to pieces, his blood thick on the fallen snow. Another polar bear drags a Viking into the sea only to be scewered by a Narwhale and pulled under the water. In all the chaos a great white bear, twice as large as any of the others, stands on its two hind legs, where once the giant heaping mass bubbled its transmormation. Blood pours down a deep gash from it's neck where Ingvar had cut him.
Kor-Gamon meets Ingvar's eyes and the beast roars once more before turning and walking back into the sea.
