ASH: Louie

Louie watches the others leave into the Accident & Emergency section. Behind him is the rest of the hospital. Dr. Sutcliffe must be somewhere in there. He remembers, vaguely, that the linoleum had a long bloodstain beneath where his feet now stood. He could almost see it there and yet ... it wasn't really there, was it?

Man I need to get off my feet. I guess the best place to find her would be her office. I don't know if I'll make it that far though. Louie flags down the first nurse, doctor, or orderly that he sees.

The staff largely ignore him. Typical public hospital... They were all so busy they brushed him off and continued on their way before he could get his first few words out. After all, dressed as he was in a janitorial uniform, they could hardly think much more of him. Apparently, word of his revival hadn't gotten around ... or perhaps it was simply that no one cared.

Louie decides subtlety is getting him no where. He crumples down to the floor and lies there waiting for someone to help. It's not that hard to do considering he's so weak. He just gives over to the exhaustion.

Louie berates a passing nurse as she steps over him. Seeing that he is getting no where he starts to get frustrated. Then it comes to him. It's so simple. Just like the comercial he saw on american t.v. he yells.

Help. I've fallen and I can't get up.

Louie slowly makes his way back to his feet and start making his way to Dr. Sutcliffes office.

What kind of hospital is this. I just woke up from a three year coma and no one will help me. I can barely stand up.

Louie feels progressively weaker as he makes his way down the corridor. The odds of blacking out increase substantially, or so it seems. If he continues on this path, he might wind up unconscious on the floor. Is he willing to risk it?

Louie decides to give up. He looks for something soft and rolls it up into a pillow. He then lies down in the middle of the hallway and let's himself drift off to sleep. Stupid people will have to step over me.

Louie finds sleep elusive. The floor is hard and the air chills his skin, sucking the warmth from the flesh. Then his nose is hit by a harsh iron tang and something else, something old and heavy, that lies on the air. There is a damp scent, too, that of mould, not of the normal sterile scents of the hospital. His eyes flicker but they don't open - or at least, they couldn't have opened. The world is still black.

Louie makes his way back to his feet and tries to look around. Great now I'm blind. This is just freaking wonderful. Feeling scared, and frustrated Louie sits back down with his legs crossed, and starts calling out. Hello anyone. I can't see anything. Can you help me. I'm probably in a different reality now....just when I was starting to like the last one.

His voice is distorted with a slight echo. The floor is ... damp with something. Something familiar settles in his mouth when he speaks and enters his nose when he breathes, burning his lungs ... ash?

He follows the wall down and feels it turn around a corner. He goes to follow it and bangs his knee against wood. Reaching down, he feels some sort of smooth counter, topped with pens, a cold mug of some sickly smelling liquid, and a computer. Moving his hands across it, he finds another corner shortly away... A doorway? With a desk in front of it?

His clothing has returned to the ash-stained cloak and the various assortment of items he had held before. His right foot clacks on something, knocking it aside. Feeling down he finds ... a shotgun?

The hospital sounds conspicuously empty. He can hear the dripping of water from a faucet as he passes the nurse's station nearest the stairs. He knows well enough of the amenities behind the closed door of the nurse's station.

Louie continues on looking for some sign of another person. He thinks he knows what is going on now. It's just like the matrix. They want you to be comfortable in that other reality so you don't come back here and stop them. He is very likely wrong, but he takes comfort in the thought that he somehow bettered the spirits in this place.

Come on spirits. I'm ready for you. You haven't taken me down yet. You've taken everything I've ever cared about. Now it's my turn. I'll go down to the lake and stop you there if I have to. Louie continues to search. If he finds nothing on the second floor then he'll make his way to the third. There were so many people still asleep. There has to be someone here.

There's a letter stuck to a blood smear on the floor. Written on the soggy pages are the words: "I came here looking for respite. The doctors said I'd be safe. But where did everybody go? I can't keep searching like this. I'm getting tired. The phones don't work, either. I keep going around and around and I keep thinking that I've seen this place before, in my dreams, of a place long ago. It doesn't make any sense yet still I'll look. At least, while I remain in here, the infection can't spread."

The weed is good, very good, giving him a slight head spin. He starts to feel a little paranoid, however, by the end of it. He also feels very hungry ... a feeling made better by the sight of the copious amounts of candy that have come from the broken vending machine. A veritable carpet of it... The snacks don't even look tarnished, their wrappers clean - possibly because they had been safe behind the glass in a reasonably sealed compartment when the ash came.

The shadows seem to flutter about, moving just out of view. He hears something clatter to the floor by the nurse's station. Something behind the counter.

Louie makes his way over the to the snack machine and indulges his cravings a little with a bag of chips. He then grabs his shotgun and makes his way slowly over to the nurse's counter trying to see what is making the noise.

As he fetches the chips, he hears a swish, swish, swish of something being dragged against the floor. Something small. Reaching the counter, he sees the telephone receiver brushing against the floor, dangling from its cord.

Louie is freaked by the sound of giggling. If there is one thing that is out of place in this situation it's laughing. Still if there is someone alive out there he has to know. He makes his way up the stairs slowly leading with his gun.

There are fresh, bloody footprints leading up the stairs. Small footprints, like those of a child. A woman stands at the top of the stairs, her violet-and-black veil hanging low across her back, her white dress stained at the hems with blood, rusty water and unrecognisable stains. The uniform of a High Priestess of the Sanctified Protectorate - the cult Louie has called his own. She faces away from Louie.

"Don't be a damn fool, Louie Armstrong, you know full well who I am," she says with a sneer, turning around. The bloodied footsteps have passed her by - it certainly isn't her feet that made them. "If you should so much as threaten me once more, I will see to it that you return to the place you came from."

Something about the threat causes Louie to shiver as adrenaline surged through his veins. He knows, deep down, she isn't talking about the normal world.

"What are you doing back here? You should be fulfilling your mission. They need to know what happened in this place."

Re: ASH: Louie

Louie's tone is a little more respectful. Sorry for the outburst, but there are things happening here that I didn't expect. What are you talking about by the way. Who needs to know and what am I supposed to do. I thought I knew, but I guess I don't. All I know is that there aren't even any children left to carry out the sacrifice with. Plus I don't want to do it. I can't hurt a kid, and no one can make me. I'd rather die.

Re: ASH: Louie

"What are you talking about? No one's expecting you to commit any sacrifices," she snaps, then her face softens. "Oh, I suppose one can only expect the memory to trickle back. How unfortunate. It will make things harder to you. You must regain your comrades, the ones of the other side of the wall, for once you are in their proximity, you shall be pulled outside as well. Lead them to an understanding of what came about here long ago and how that unfortunate mess triggered something much worse. Look to the Tome of Ibn'Kha, hidden within Benford's Private Library, and you should, perhaps, be able to steer them in the right direction somewhat. Remember, without a relevant understanding of the past, no realisation of the future can be had. You are merely an element of the past. I am but that of the present. Find them now. Return and guide them and lead the cult from the ashes of blasphemy into the light of redemption."

Louie looks puzzled, but he's inclined to believe her. What wall are you talking about, and can you give me a little more information about what it is I'm supposed to do. I will go to the library as you have instructed. I just want to help end this. I used to be so scared all the time. Now I'm just angry. I'll kill anything that gets in my way so tell me what is good and what is bad so that I can continue my mission.

"What could you possibly fear?" she asked with a snort. "You've already had the worst happen to you. No matter. Fetch the book, either this side or the other. Find the others, if you can. You cannot reach the other side without them. This world is but a pale imitation of the other but soon it will be its mirror. Do remember that."

There is a mind-shattering howl from further beneath the hospital, sending Louie to his knees. His body trembles, his vision a smear of darkness and light.

"I must go. You may have one more question to have answered. Then I must leave."

Louie stands up, and says to himself. Who's rare book collection. Well I think the best place to find out is down below. Maybe I'll find out what happened to Brianna. Louie leaves this floor and start making his way to the temple. If unobstructed he will continue all the way there.

His footsteps echo eerily as he walks down the flight of steps and cross the linoleum. Ash particles flicker through the torchlight, floating lazily across the corridor. The rust and smears of ashen water are given ripples by droplets that fall from the ceiling. The door to the basement stands open and he pauses there, stopped by the sheer feeling of loneliness and despair that emanates from beneath. Something calls to his heart and he can't be sure that entering the misbegotten place won't drag him back to a place he really doesn't want to go.

Louie heads for the parking lot. Maybe his scooter is still there. I sure am glad I know how to drive a hog.

Re: ASH: Louie

The parking lot is an ocean of rusted carcasses and cracked windshields. The bodies within the only partially sealed containers are charred, sitting on seats that spill stuffing onto their shoulders. The sound of a horn perpetually sounding can be heard somewhere in the right of the parking lot. Several of the cars are piled up along the road that leads out to join the main asphalt road, bumper to bumper, as though caught in a mad dash to escape. One 4WD sits on the median strip, its headlights shining into the distance forlornly, its bonnet pressed lightly against a tree.

The scooter is stuck between a few cars. He'll need to carry it out.

The roads are dark and deserted. Rusted out vehicles flank him on either side. Refuse or crashed cars often force him to take a slightly different direction. The only issue is that he doesn't have a map of London and he has no idea, particularly in the dark, how to get to Oxford from here, let alone where the university is. Perhaps a post office might have the relevant maps? Or a newsagent?

As he hasn't left any of the main roads, yet, he soon comes across a Caltex. He sees for the first time ever, an empty petrol station in London which is pretty unusual for four p.m. if his watch is accurate. The doors to the petrol station have been left partially open. There's a red jerry can sitting by the doors and a large blood smear by a few of the petrol bowsers.

Louie strolls into the gas station, and walks over to the maps. He picks one up and slides it into his pocket for future reference. Maybe going to the Library right now isn't such a great idea. Louie flips up his hood hiding his face. People need me right now. His mind wanders to Jill, and his heart still races at the thought of her. I need to find someone else or I might just go crazy. He catches a reflection of himself in the window and starts to laugh out loud. No it's too late. I'm already crazy. Louie continues to laugh as he makes his way back to his hog and sets off back towards the hospital.

The ash seems to thicken across the road, becoming a wall that stings his exposed skin when he rides through it. It's harder to find his way now. He can barely make out the silhouettes of his hands on the handles, let alone the street signs ahead of him. It is as though the very world were making it more difficult for him to get back there.

The ash returns to its normal constant stream, dimming the lights of the stopped cars up ahead, though eased up enough to keep driving. He realizes that it's actually truly night now - though it's no darker or lighter than before. He hears nothing but the steady roar of his motorcycle as he moves down the streets and around the cluttered vehicles that choke these old London arteries.

He realises his driving too fast for his skill when he hits an open car door (1 damage) and slams it shut with his own force. If he's going to get there in one peace, he'd either have to slow down to walking speed or risk a greater accident.

ooc Oops so I did. Oh well we both know Louie isn't cool enough for a motorcycle. 8-)

Louie curses his carelessness and slows the scooter down. It occurs to him that he still has the card that Jill gave him so his first act will be to find a phone. Dammit is all Louie mutters to himself as he heads back to the gas station. Once there he tries to locate a phone to see if it works. I know I'm in another dimension, but you never know what is going to happen anymore. It's worth a try. Louie tries to convince himself that he's not crazy as his picks up to the phone to check for a dial tone.

The phone hangs off the hook of the pay phone. Lifting it to his ear, he hears:

Then nothing but heavy breathing.

Louie looks around while getting control of himself. Dammit you're supposed to be the hero get a hold of yourself. More timid than he wants he continues. No I don't know how to describe it. I was walking, and I got so tired that I had to lie down in the hall of the hospital. I fell asleep and when I woke up I was back in the ash. I left the hospital heading for the library to see if I could find books that would help. I remembered your card and called you. I'm the only one here.....I don't know what to do.

"You're ... ?" Jill takes a deep breath. "You've got to be back in a coma, right? You're asleep again? Because that world's not real, right?" Jill sounds like she's trying to convince herself.

At odds with her previous stance, she adds, "Wait, you went to the library? Does that mean it's safe to go outside now?"

Re: ASH: Louie

Louie spits the words out in disgust maybe a little more harshly then he meant. I told them that was the dream, that this was real, but no one would listen to me. Taking a breath he calms himself down again. There were just too many things wrong with that other world. His voice takes on a business like tone as he continues. I don't think it's completely safe outside, but I've found a motorbike that'll get me through the traffic. I couldn't stay at the hospital. Ask yourself this though. If I'm in a coma then how am I calling you from a gas station, and why did the call go through. I think these things are playing with our perceptions of reality.

"Nothing makes sense!" Jill sounds frustrated; she's well beyond the end of her rope, but has to keep going anyway. "Strange things have been happening here, but I don't want your world to be real ... it's too horrible. And regardless of which of us is in reality, how are we even communicating? What's going on?" The question is as much to herself as to Louie.

"I think my husband might have some, uh, some contacts that maybe could help us figure this out. I think we're going to leave here soon. Could I give you his mobile number?"

Panic crosses Louie's voice as he thinks about hanging up. Uhm sure that would be good. He searches quickly for a pen and paper. His voice shakes as if he is on the verge of crying. "Okay, here's Charlie's number," she begins reciting the digits. The door to the office starts squeaking on rusty hinges as it slowly opens a few inches, as though blown by a non-existent breeze. There's a thump against the glass near Louie's face, causing him to jump, but it's only a newspaper slamming against the thick, grimy glass, before being blown away outside. She's onto the sixth digit as the door to the office squeaks open a few more inches. Was there movement over there? Something crouched low enough to hide beneath the counter, barely captured in the light of his flashlight?

Louie keeps his flashlight trained on whatever is out there, since it's strapped to the barrel of his gun and finishes writing down the number quickly. Once the number is written down he speaks quickly. I'll get the address later, right now something is trying to sneak up on me. He drops the phone, not hanging it up and squares himself off with the shotgun. If you think you are hiding your wrong. Stand up or I'll blast you.

Something clatters onto the floor behind him. Whipping around, he sees a rusted can of spaghetti roll - almost leisurely - across the floor. His flashlight, quivering, trains on it in near fascination as it rolls to rest beside the wall. Then it rises up to quiver around the edges of the line of shelves, in search for whatever he believes disturbed it. The door to the office stops creaking - at least - but if anyone had crept out from behind it in order to get around to the shelving, he would have spotted them. He has a clear line of sight as the pay phone is on the wall only a half dozen feet away from it.

Louie takes this as his cue to leave. Keeping the gun up and trying to look everywhere at once he heads for the door.

The phone behind him swings upon its cord as he heads for the door. His fingers grasp it - so very cold. He feels a strange longing for the phone ... for Jill's voice ... out there, all is cold, out there, all is frighteningly lonesome. He can feel something beckoning him out there, reaching around for him. Yet it isn't out there exactly. It's in here with him. Surrounding him. All-encompassing. If he would only kneel... If he would only give himself to it... It calls for him to return ... but to what?

Now he is torn between three places. The phone ... with Jill ... a comforting human voice ... and with it his humanity. To run ... flee to his bike ... ride out and away from this twisted place ... try to find a place beyond its borders. The beacon ... strangely compelling ... both within him and somewhere else ... drawing his attention to a place ... not far.

Louie feels for the flask around his neck. His get out of jail free card. He starts making his way towards the beacon. Gun pointing the way he yells. You won't take me alive, you sons of bitches. He lets out a warning shot more for his comfort than to scare anything away. Cocking the gun he smiles and continues on. Ok Louie it's time to use the force.

The beacon directs him down the street. It sings to him, thrumming within his own head. He's not sure how far away it is ... but it's out there. Calling for him.

Louie shoulders the gun, not thinking it's going to do much good and looks for something to make ear plugs out of. If he finds something he'll stuff it into his ears trying to muffle the sound. Holding his vial around his neck he makes his way slowly on.

At first he shoves his hands against his ears but realises that the sound seems to be originating between his ears. The song presses in on him from all angles with the same pressure found in a migraine. The song is a crazed and disjointed jumble of words and sounds. A terrible cacophany sung in thousands of indistinct voices. The words call to him, violating his very flesh, and he screams in agony as his nose bleeds.

Louie touches a hand to his nose and looks at the blood. He gasps in concern. I'm not going to faint, I'm not going to faint. Taking a couple of deep breaths Louie stabilizes himself. Turning towards his bike he tries to run to it. Got to get away.

As he reaches his bike, grasping it, seating himself on it, sliding sideways, gripping tighter, re-settling himself, fumbling with keys, oh shit oh shit, inserting the key, twisting, nothing, oh god oh shit, inserting, twisting, fear rising, though his mind containing itself, the voices break off their song and turn to a scream, long, strong, harrowing, rearing up in his mind.

OOC: Physical hysteria sounds like a good one for now.

The voices fall back to babbling and their voices pull at the edges of his sanity as though calling him to rejoin the fabric ... what is the fabric ... the fabric of something stitched together ... all together ... where is it ... all around ... my voice, my feet, pulled from the fabric ... by what and when ... always.

SAN loss 0/1d3.

Louie makes his way back to his bike laughing hysterically at the absurdity of the situation. His laughter quickly turn to tears, and then back to laughter again just as quickly. Come on Louie get a grip on yourself.

The burble of voices begins to die away. It seems to have emanated from somewhere south east.

Louie gets on his bike and starts heading towards the Library. I'll call Jill as soon as I find another phone.

The journey is almost uneventful, though slowed by Louie's incessant giggling as thoughts and feelings whirl through his mind. It seems almost jaunty, riding down the silent roads, and thoughts of himself doing so naked flood his mind, distracting him from the task at hand. He finds he has gone around in circles and must try to re-orient himself.

Louie straightens himself getting his bearings, and once he's on his way again he starts to giggle. Dam I'm as bad as the bloody joker. Of course this triggers the batman theme song in his head. Na na na na na na na na na na na na Batman.
