NOR - Jill & Charlie's thread

The wood is firm in Louie's hands, the mop holding up his weight as he awakens to himself with a brief start, with the queer sinking sensation of a micro-sleep. His blue janitorial uniform is clean but for a few bleach stains. The air is warm and clean with the hospital tang of detergent and sterile plastics.

Jill awakens with a jolt as her chin slides off her fist, her elbow on the cabinet at the foot of the bed, her body sitting on a chair. She wears a nice daisy-print dress that her husband has always loved. A children's book lays open on her lap - Ronald Dahl.

The curtains on the Children's Ward have been pulled back, allowing the waning light of the dying day to fill the room. The television set is on. A children's show involving dinosaurs is on the air. Several of the children are sitting up in their beds, watching the show eagerly. Others watch her and Louie curiously. A few of the children - Alisha, Brianna, Corey, Dahlia - are all still asleep.

Jill tries to hide her shock, and manages to keep her jaw from dropping open, yet she can't help but run a hand down her leg, where her wound is ... was? She glances around the room, half expecting to see some new monstrosity emerging from the corners. The children she remembers from her--was it really a dream?--are asleep ... should she wake them? Had they really shared her nightmare? As she looks out of the window at the beautiful sunset, she barely manages to keep tears from trickling down her cheek. Of course it was just a nightmare. Of course it was.

It is then that her eyes catch those of the janitor, what was his name? Louie. He had been there. Does he remember? Is that even possible?

Louie looks around and grabs his wrists automatically. He sees Jill sitting in the chair. His infatuation with her is suddenly not so important. It was too real, but did it happen. He see's Jill checking for something on her leg that's not there just like he did with his wrists.

"Jill? Are you ok? I think I'm losing my mind."

Louie see's Brianna lieing in the bed and starts to weep.

"She's ok....I didn't....She didn't. I won't do it Brianna. I promise."

He sinks to his knees beside Brianna's bed and hold her hand.

"I'll take care of you."

"Yeah, of course I am. I just nodded off, nothing really happened."

Jill is unnerved when Louie begins weeping and, worse, she's afraid that the children will be disturbed by his strange behavior. Although if his behavior is the worst thing they have to worry about right now, that's not so bad. She moves over to him and awkwardly pats his shoulder. "C'mon, Louie, these kids are trying to watch TV. Let's go out into the hallway, okay? We should leave them in peace, right?" She tries to keep a reassuring smile on her face so that the children are not worried.

Louie rises and follows Jill into the hallway.

"I don't know if I just had a nightmare or if I'm getting a second chance to set things right. My gut feeling is telling me to get all of those kids out of there before the metal wires come out of the toilet and start killing the children." Louie pauses and looks at Jill for a second. Unsure if he is sounding like a madman. Maybe he is mad. "I know I probably sound crazy, but it was so real."

The breath catches in Jill's throat at Louie's mention of the wire thing and whatever she was about to say is lost for a moment. "You could go check out the toilets, see if there's anything suspicious." It must have been a dream, ... but it doesn't hurt to check things, right? Especially if it helps shake off this sense of dread. "But I'm more concerned about the children who are still asleep. They could still be there, or, you know what I mean. But is it safe to wake them? What were you doing there before you woke up here?"

Re: Louie and Jill - NOBODY ELSE - MASSIVE SPOILERS

Louie notices Jill's reaction to the mention of the wires. The fact that she didn't out right call him crazy makes him think it might not have been a dream.

"You're not going to believe me, but I was outside the hospital surrounded by the spirits of children covered in water. It looked like a nuclear bomb had gone off and everything was covered in ash. The next thing I knew I was here. It was a bad dream right? Tell me I'm crazy. I'd rather be crazy than for all of that to be true. It was so real....and the things I did......I....."

Louie trails off and seems to be lost in his own thought. The geeky comic book, starwars loving guy isn't what he used to be.

Jill looks at Louie with concern. "I ... I'm going to assume that it was a nightmare. I don't think that we have to be crazy or think that it was true. Somehow we both shared a weird dream. Maybe something's gone bad with the food in the vending machine..." Jill doesn't seem like even she's willing to believe that, but she presses on. "Anyway, it's over now, right? So let's gently wake up the kids who are still asleep in case they're still stuck in that nightmare too. Okay?" She's not quite sure why, but it seems very important to Jill that they wake the kids soon, before something bad happens to them in the dream. It could get worse.

Louie looks back into the room with a sad look on his face.

"Something tells me that we aren't going to be able to wake some of them. I think another doctor has sedated them, and if they shared the same dream as us.........well...I don't think..."

Louie trails off like there is something that he wants to say, but can't get the words out.

"I guess your right though we should wake the kids. If this is a second chance we need to be prepared. Dammit I'm just a janitor. There is something you should know, but.........I...promise you won't hate me...please."

Louie looks genuinely scared. He has something to say, but is afraid it's unforgivable.

Jill looks confused. Why would a doctor have sedated them? That was just in the dream. The longer she's awake, the more willing she is to believe that it really was just some nightmare. How could it have been otherwise? Sure, it's strange that the janitor had the same dream, and the kids who were in her dream are still asleep ... but Louie interrupts her train of thought with his plea. "Why would I hate you? Louie, are you okay? What's the matter?"

Louie stares at Jill in the eyes deciding what he wants to say. Finally he takes a deep breath and let's it out before beginning.

"It wasn't a dream. If anything it was a vision. My family has been part of an organization that meets below the hospital for generations. There are caverns below that are hundreds possibley thousands of years old. My mother has been pushing me into it since I was a small child. I have a title, but that's not important. What's important is that this group has been trying to keep the spirits that inhabit this place under control. What we saw is what happens if they fail. My job was to bring a sacrifice.......Louie looks back into the room, and then back at Jill........the problem is I can't do it. I'm a failure and everyone is going to suffer for it. Brianna was supposed to be the one. She's like a daughter to me, and she hates me. I did some terrible things to try and protect her. The problem is she thinks I'm out to hurt her. I won't do it. There has to be another way. I know you think I'm crazy, but I'm telling you the truth. I don't know why, but I trust you. I swear to you that I don't want to hurt anyone.

Louie stops talking and stares at Jill, giving her time to let what he said sink in. She hates me. She thinks I'm a monster. I didn't want to tell, but I couldn't keep it in anymore.

Jill stares at Louie, dumbfounded. She opens her mouth, realizes she doesn't know what to say, and closes it again. She glances around the hallway, but there's no one near enough to have overheard.

The easy answer would be to assume that Louie was crazy, or maybe just that he still was caught up in the nightmare ... but some of what he said seemed to make sense of bits of the dream. She couldn't believe him. What he said was crazy, and if it was true, it means the dream wasn't just a dream, and she doesn't know if she could handle that.

She looks into the ward, where the children were happy and peaceful, and then brings her gaze back to Louie. Staring him straight in the eyes, she challenges him to make her believe him.

"Show me the caverns."

Louie gulps when Jill asks to see the caverns. The last place he wants to go is back there. There wouldn't be time to set everything else right.

"What about the children. If what we saw comes again the children will be ripped apart. Plus Carson hasn't been infected yet we might still be able to save him. There are so many people we could help. The only thing going down there would do is possibley get us into trouble. They don't take too kindly to outsiders intruding where they shouldn't be. I'll take you if your set on it, but we need to make a stop on the way down. There is a room that has some guns in it. We may need to protect ourselves.....well I'll be fine, but I would rather you were protected. Dammit.......you don't know what your asking. I don't know if I can protect you. The cult has members everywhere, you even know some....like nurse Hammond for one."

Louie stops talking abruptly fearing he is sounding like a lunatic and just stares at Jill waiting for her reaction.

The more Louie says, the harder it is for Jill to dismiss it as crazy rantings. The talk of guns and protection shakes her, as does the mention of Nurse Hammond. "If I remember right, there wasn't much we could do to keep the kids from being ripped apart." Jill stops and takes a deep breath at the memory. Somehow she seems more angry than afraid, and this gives her strength. "Besides, I don't see why what happened in the nightmare has to be the future. For one thing, I don't have a big bag full of construction materials with me." At least, I don't think I do. "And I can't believe what you're saying unless you show me somehow that it's true. And if it is, then I guess we have to figure out some way to stop it, right?" Jill swallows a sudden desire to start crying. It wasn't fair; she had woken up from the nightmare, it was just a dream, and now here's a guy who's trying to tell her that it's not--that it's real.

Louie nods his agreement.

"Your right. I don't know if there is anything I can do to prove this to you other than take you with me. The thing I'm most concerned with is this real. I mean is this another trick done by this god foresaken hospital. The last thing I knew I was surrounded by the spirits of past sacrifices, and I refused to hurt them. I have the ability to stop one supernatural attack if I need it. Kind of like a get out of jail free card." Louie pulls out the vial from around his neck and shows Jill. It's full of a almost glowing blue liquid. " I had a shotgun and a black cloak too. I'm assuming they are back in that room I got the gun in. That's the room that it happened in......where Brianna killed her."

Louie closes his eyes and he appears to be crying softly as the memories wash over him. In a calm voice that contradicts his appeance he tells his storey.

"We were in a room. A room I knew to be safe from all of the weirdness. It turns out we should have stayed away. Brianna, me, and childrens preformer name Ronald left and I took them there. When we got to the room it was full of members from the cult. I tried to get them to play along. They knew how important my job was, but Ronald was out of control. He was yelling at them, telling them they should be out there helping people. I went back into the hall to get Brianna some pain medication, and when I got back Ronald was still yelling. Poor Brianna was so scared. I put my shotgun down on the bed, and that's when Dr. Sutcliffe shot Ronald with a tranquillizer gun. Brianna panicked, and grabbed the shotgun. Before I knew it there was nothing left of Dr. Sutcliffe. Brianna was ruined for the sacrifice. They wanted to kill her and Ronald, but I wouldn't let them. I knocked Ronald out with the butt of a shotgun and then threatened them, and told them to make sure Brianna and Ronald weren't hurt. They had to listen to me. None stood higher. I didn't know what I was going to do. I just knew that people needed help. That's when Nurse Hammond and I set off into the hospital. She was set on getting another sacrifice, but I wanted to help as many people as possible. The next thing I knew I was here. Now you know everything. It would have been better if I had been killed. With everything I've been a part of I deserve nothing less. Brianna hates me now. She thinks I'm a monster, and I can't help but think she might be right."

Shivers run up and down Jill's spine as she listens to Louie. As if speaking to herself, she mutters, "When Nurse Hammond appeared to help us move the children ... she was really only there to collect another sacrifice?" She sighs deeply. She recognizes that Louie is in pain, but can't bring herself to comfort him. If what he says is true--and it's getting harder for her to deny it--then he has been involved in some horrible business. But she doesn't fear for her own safety; he does seem authentic in his repentance, at least.

Jill runs a tired hand through her hair. "Louie, listen. What happened in the dream hasn't really happened yet, okay? So let's try to stop this all before it can begin." I can't believe I'm saying this. "What can we do?"

Louie shrugs and looks at Jill with a look of hopelessness.

"That's the problem. I don't know. You see the one thing I forgot to tell you is that the people in this group are not violent by nature. Most of us are pacifists. We have been researching for generations how to stop this without a sacrifice, and so far no other option has presented itself. There may be one or two violent people associated with the cult, but that is it. We are made up of mothers, fathers, sons and daughters all trying to stop the world as we know it from ending. That's why I feel like such a failure. Every other person in my position, in the past, has done thier job. With one exception, but that is why there are more than one betrayer. Just in case one of us fails. Even though none of us enjoy the sacrifice, it is still a necessary thing. Without it everything we have experienced is doomed to repeat itself, but I can't do it. I can't hurt a child. I thought I could. I knew I should, but I couldn't. And as far as I know the other betrayers have failed, or we would not be going through this. So if you have any ideas I'm up for hearing them."

Jill takes another couple of steps away from the door to the ward. Questions pour into her mind faster than she can decide which to ask. "I don't understand any of this. Why are there caverns under the hospital? Why does a sacrifice have to be made to stop ... whatever it is? And what is it, anyway? What do you mean 'with one exception'--did the sacrifice not happen once? Does the sacrifice have to be a child? And why isn't this all just a bad dream?"

Jill's face brightens for a moment. She grabs her upper arm between thumb and index finger and gives it a hard pinch. She looks up at Louie again and groans in frustration.

Louie trys to take in all of Jill's questions and answers them as best he can.

"I don't know fully how the caverns came to be. That was never my area of expertise. To be honest I'm not allowed to know all of the history. I had one task that I was assigned that I focussed on fully. There are other members that have the knowledge that you want to know. The one exception was my father. He was the head betrayer back in his time. He couldn't bring himself to do it and there was almost a disaster. Another betrayer stepped in and did the sacrifice for him. He was shamed and I never saw him again. I think my mother had him killed. She is one of the exceptions that I referred to earlier. She lives for violence. I think it angers her that I'm so much like my father. The one question I can answer is yes, it does have to be a child. Not only that but they need to be innocent, and most importantly they can't know what is going to happen. They have to trust the betrayer fully. This is why I have the title betrayer, and once again someone from my family can't fulfill his duty."

Corey's back arches up off the mattress and he exhales loudly. He begins to tremble and seize up, his limbs flapping about in different directions as though he were trying to hold someone off. His eyelids flutter open, revealing eyes that had rolled up to the back of his head.

"Doctor!" cries one of the children, a little boy who goes rushing for the door. Jill and Louie don't recognise the little boy. In fact, they don't recognise most of the children in the room.

Louie looks at the little boy for the first time and realizes that he doesn't know him. Things are getting stranger. He knows all of the children in the ward. He puts up a hand to stay Jill, just in case her instinct to help the children takes over.

"Something isn't right. I don't recognise most of these children, and the ones I do recognise are asleep. I suggest we get out of here. I don't think that this is one hundred percent real. We should be skeptical of everything we see. This hospital is messing with out minds."

Louie grabs Jill's hand and tries to drag her away. This just seems wrong and he doesn't want to get suckered into a trap.

Jill does take a step toward Corey, but Louie's hand and, more importantly, his words, stop her in her tracks. "You're right, I don't know these kids. And come to think of it, I don't know a Nurse Hammond either. That is, not outside of the dream." Besides, there's nothing I could do for Corey that one of the doctors here couldn't do better.

As she allows herself to be dragged off, Jill seems to wake up more. "Wait, your special magical vial? They sell them at the gift shop! What in the world is going on? And what happened to Corey?"

Jill's words puzzle Louie.
"How can they sell these at the gift shop. This was created to keep me safe. This dam hospital is playing with our minds, and if you don't know Hammond then which one of use is loosing it. I have full memories of everything I've told you. How are your memories. Are they clear or fuzzy. We have to determine what is real before we continue. The one thing we can agree on is that something is desperately wrong here."

Louie let's go of Jill's hand and sits on the the floor. He puts his head in his hands and tries to concentrate.

"How could she not remember? I'm not going crazy. There are too many things out of place. We don't know the kids, We both have memories of what we are assuming was a dream. How could we have had the same dream?

Louie stops and looks up at Jill.

"What were you doing before you woke up here?"

"Well, Hammond could exist, I've just never met her."

"Um, Nurse Sarah and Aidan, who with child protective services or something, went up to the roof to try to catch the helicopter so we could start loading the children into it. Hammond and I stayed with the kids, to figure out how to transport them, and to take them out of the room so they wouldn't wake up and find the gore everywhere."
Jill shudders again at the thought. "And, well, I'd lost a lot of blood, I guess. I just kind of ... passed out. And woke up here."

Doctor Sutcliffe comes running into the Children's Ward at the sound of the children's cries. She barely glances at Jill and Louie as she moves toward the bed, but then she pauses, her eyes twitching from one to the other. A few nurses enter behind her. Louie recognises only one of them. Louie see Dr. Sutcliffe and starts to panic inside. The urge to flee is overwhelming.

"Let's get out of here Jill. We need to talk. Anywhere you want to go I'll go." Louie leans closer and whispers to Jill" Dr. Sutclilffe is supposed to be dead, and I don't recognise those other nurses, and I know most of the one's in the hospital. Jill whispers back. "I don't know, but why should they be surprised that we're awake? Something weird is definitely going on." She also feels the desire to flee (on her miraculously healed leg?), but waits for a moment to think. "You said there was a room that was immune to ... whatever this hospital does. Take us there."

The SDK room is unlocked. Inside are three computer-laden desks, one of which is being used by a rather frantic pair of youths. The computers look different somehow... Slimmer. Judging by the youths' uniforms, they're students here. There's a pair of bookcases, a filing cabinet and other odds and ends. The calender on the wall says something odd.

Louie stops dead in his tracks as he sees the calendar. He turns to Jill an motions for her to leave.

"It's official. I've lost my mind....and about three years if that calendar is correct. That would explain why I don't recognise half of the people here. How could I have no memory of the last three years. I woke up mopping. I've fallen asleep on the job before but three years. I say we go check out the caverns and see if they are still there. If they aren't then I think I'll go the psych ward and check myself in. Something of my memories has to be real."

Jill looks shocked and follows Louie from the room. "But I've lost three years, too! Sure, go check for the caverns, but I've got to call my husband." As Louie walks with Jill his mind races. To keep from going crazy he decides to talk as they walk.

"We should discuss what we know and see if we can come up with some clues as to what happened. What we know is, both of us have memories of a catastrophe. Something supernatural that seemed to want to kill everyone. We both seemed to wake up and now it's three years in the future. Everyone that we recognise is asleep, and people we thought were dead are still alive and here. Could everyone we saw before we woke up be sharing the same dream, and if so how. Or are you and I the ones who are dreaming. Are we dreaming at all. I've seen enough movies to know that something ain't right, and nothing should be ruled out. Maybe there is some kind of time flux which moves us from time to time, but that wouldn't explain why someone I thought was dead would still be alive. What do you think?"

Both Louie and Jill feel quite tired. What little distance they have walked has exhausted them and Jill can hardly reach for the hand-set. Louie's clothes pull and tug at his limbs and joints, as though the uniform were somewhat too small for him.

It is only then, in the silence of separation, that the two realise they have lost a surprising amount of weight.

Jill listens to Louie with only half an ear, her thoughts being completely occupied in frantically flowing guesses as to what's going to happen in this phone call. She pushes several coins into the slot, dials her husband's work number, it's too early for him to be home ... I think, and leans against the wall, exhausted. What's happened to me?

Louie takes a seat over by the nurse's desk and looks for a familiar face. Even if he doesn't recognise anyone he decides to ask.

"Excuse me nurse. I don't know if you know me, but I'm one of the Janitors here. I just woke up and I don't know what's going on. I've seem to have lost three years of my life, but that's not possible right?"

There it is. Louie lays all his cards on the table. All he knows is that he is so tired and can't run anymore. If they kill him then maybe he'll have some peace, and if they don't maybe he'll have some answers. He doesn't point out Jill. If this goes wrong he doesn't want her getting hurt.

Louie: The nurse looks at him with a shocked expression. "Bu..." She looks up and over at the others at the reception desk, then over at the various patients milling about. Then she looks back down at him. "We... A doctor needs to examine you. See how you're..." She shakes her head. "Yeah, let's go." She reaches down to help him up.

Jill: "Look, if that's you Malcone, I'm warning you, stop calling!" says a familiar voice.

"You at the hospital?" Charlie asks excitedly. "Why'nt the nurses call me that you woke up? I'm coming right over. Look, you at the hospital. For God's sake, it's been three years!"

Louie politely shrugs off the helping hand.
"If it's all the same to you I promised Jill I would wait for her. I'm not going anywhere without her. When she is done talking to her husband you can have a doctor talk to both of us at the same time. That is the least we can do for her, if three years have really gone by then she has some explaining to do. The biggest thing you can do to help me right now is tell me how come three years have gone by, and where did all the ash go?"

"Ash?" the nurse asks, confused. "Well, erm, at least the rough part of the news has passed. You see, three years and four months ago, over 500,000 people world-wide fell into a coma. No problems with breathing. You and Jill are the first people to wake up."

Louie has seen too much to believe that right now. He looks at the nurse quizzically, and with an edge of skeptisizm to his voice he continues on.

"So if what your is telling is true. Then why do Jill and I have the same memories. We've talked for a while since we've been awake and both experience the same things while in our so called comas. Lastly if I've been in a Coma for that long how did I manage to walk down two flights of stairs."

Something occurs to Louie and he looks down at himself for the first time since waking up to see if he is wearing hopital pajamas or his janitor uniform.

He's excited. With the sudden relief also came an extreme weariness. "Yeah, I am. I ... can't stand here anymore, I'm too tired. So I'm going to sit down. In the waiting room. I'll wait for you there." She pushes herself away from the wall and listens for any last words before hanging up and precariously making her way to the nearest chair.

Jill.

"Yes, yes, sit down. I love you," Charlie says with feeling.

Jill realises that while the clothes she is wearing are most certainly hers, they aren't what she remembers wearing in the 'dream'.

Louie.

"I'm not qualified to say. Perhaps the words you were both saying were building together a dream you thought you shared. After all, you can't be certain that the memories you have now existed before one or the other of you mentioned them. Perhaps Jill mentioned ash and you added that to your dream, then you mentioned something else and she added that to her dream." The nurse shrugs. "I'd better go talk to the front desk and get a doctor over here."

Louie wears a janitor's uniform but judging by the namebadge, it's not his. That would explain why it was so tight despite his weight loss.

Louie see Jill sit down and gets up to go sit beside her.

"Something isn't adding up here Jill. This nurse tells me we've been in a coma for three years. If that is the case then why do I have on a janitors uniform instead of a hospital gown. It's not even my uniform. I'd rather this be real than what we remember, but it doesn't seem likely. Let's stick together for now. We should not completely dismiss what they say, but be on guard. Oh ya watch for inconsistancies in what they say.....Ha and mom said I was wasting my time watching Columbo

Jill works to dry her face as Louie babbles at her. He still loves me. I missed three years, but at least I'm not alone. Slowly, however, Louie's words sink in. She looks down at her own apparel. If Charlie's been waiting for me for three years, he must have visited often and made sure I was dressed in the pretty dresses he always liked. And yet, a thought occurs to her. "Didn't we wake up in the Children's Ward? Yes, because when I woke up I had a book open on my lap. I can't have been sitting in there for three years!" She turns to Louie with fear in her eyes. "What's going on?"

Without realizing she is doing so, Jill grips the edge of her chair and nods. "I just talked to my husband. He's on his way and I told him I'd wait for him here." As an afterthought she adds, "Besides, I'm really tired."

Louie looks at the nurse with a look that borders on anger.

"I don't think you understand. I don't care what her expertise is I'm not going to her office. I don't want a wheel chair or a stretcher. We are waiting for Jill's husband. If you want us examined the doctor can come to us."

Re: Louie and Jill - NOBODY ELSE - MASSIVE SPOILERS

The nurse gives him a level look. Bursts of emotion were hardly going to faze a public healthcare worker. "We have fifteen coma patients who are like you in this hospital. Three of those have died of seizures within the past week. Now maybe you're fine and healthy, or perhaps you're willing to risk it regardless, but I have children in one of the wards and the only advice we have is to keep them with the others just so that the noise might rouse them. You two are awake. The clue to waking them up may reside with you. 500,000 people. And you two are the first to wake up."

"Now if you truly believe that making sure this lady's husband can see her the moment he walks in the door, rather than waiting an extra few minutes and talking to the front desk, is worth more than 500,000 lives - 36% of which are below the age of sixteen - then be my guest. I'll walk away now."

"Wait, nurse, did you say 500,000 people? And we're the very first to wake up?" She looks at Louie, as if trying to gauge his anger, and turns back to the nurse. "Maybe Dr. Sutcliffe could come here to tell us more?" She gives Louie a hesitant smile. "We should hear more, at least, right?"

Louie returns the nurse's look, and speaks with every bit of conviction that she just did.

"If what you say is true, and these people have been in comas for over three years then I don't see how another fifteen minutes is going to matter. You can tell Dr. Sutcliffe whatever you like, but we are the ones that have been throught the trama, and I for one will not be bullied ever again. No turn around and find another Dr. to examine us, and let me make myself clear. I don't want Dr. Sutcliffe. She can be present, but you will not split us up."

"As you wish," says the nurse with a stiff smile. "If you won't see Dr. Sutcliffe, I'll ensure an equally suitable doctor with plenty of experience in this area comes to see you." Two burly men and a gangly one come up behind her - orderlies. "These three fellows will make sure your emotions don't get the better of you," she says to Louie.

To Jill, her smile is more genuine and her voice warm and sympathetic. "You probably will be here to greet your husband when he first arrives. It will take quite some time to get an equally distinguished doctor over here. Probably for the best, Corey's on the operating table. Dr. Sutcliffe is probably best supervising the operation." She turns to Louie. "If only he had another fifteen minutes..." She goes over to the front desk.

The nurse mutters something over the front desk to a lady behind it who nods in response. Listen check - halved - to overhear it over the bustle of people. The nurse then turns back to Louie. "Joel? Yes, there is a boy on the ward suffering the same condition with that name. Perhaps he has the fifteen minutes to spare that Corey did not." She smiles briskly and goes to leave.

Jill fails to overhear the nurse. Once she leaves, Jill turns and whispers to Louie. "Wouldn't it be better to cooperate with them? Or at least not be so antagonistic. I know you think Dr. Sutcliffe is part of this ... group of yours, but she's not going to do anything if we stick together, right? If you're so aggressive, people won't be willing to help at all."

The two are taken into a doctor's office. It is unusually tidy for such an office, the files neatly placed on the shelving, the books carefully placed on the bookcase, the desk neatly ordered into In and Out piles. Other than the electrical hum of the computer, there is very little to hear or see in here. The two are left alone - the orderlies going outside and shutting the door behind them.

Louie looks over at Jill.

"For your sake I hope this is real. I don't know you really well, but from what I've seen your a good person. I just want to see someone happy, and I couldn't think of a more deserving person than you. With that said though. This still doesn't feel right. It feels very real, but somethings just aren't adding up. I guess part of me liked the other reality better. At least there I made a differnce. I actually helped people. Here I'm just that janitor that nobody notices. My mother rules my life and long for work. At least here I can try to pretend I do something important. I just don't know what to believe. Tell me I'm crazy. I'd believe you, and at least then I have somewhere to start."

Louie

Jill remains quiet for a moment, obviously having difficultly choosing her words. "But horrible things were happening there. I can't explain what's happened, but doesn't it make more sense that we were in a coma and now are disoriented and misremembering things? The things that happened," she shivers, "they were just, just horrible." She glances at the closed door, and then leans forward to whisper. "And if all of that was just some bad dream, then there's no reason to distrust Dr. Sutcliffe, right?"

I started here in grade 11. My dad died when I was young, and my mother never held onto a job for more than a few months. People say I live with her, but the truth is I took her in. I guess I've been her about 20 years, wow has it been that long already. So what brought you to the hospital. I know you read to the children and play with them, but why. Everyone seems to have a different answer to that. Some like the joy, some feel obligated, and others are running from something and just needed a place to go.

Jill seems surprised when Louie speaks so candidly about his life, and looks uncomfortable when he asks about why she comes to the hospital, seeking more than just a simple answer. Dr. Sutcliffe enters the room, panting as though she had been hurrying about. "So sorry ... I thought they'd put you two somewhere useful like in an exam room." She holds the door open and scowls at the orderlies. "Don't you think these two should have a nurse observing them or something? All right? Oh!" She takes hold of the back of Jill's wheelchair as one of the orderlies comes to take hold of Louie's wheelchair. "Let's take you somewhere better equipped. Are you feeling any pain? Dizziness? Dr. Sutcliffe nods and wheels Jill into the lounge room. "Would you like a magazine to read? Feel free to sit on the couch if you like but try not to move too much. I'm surprised you both have managed to walk ... the muscular atrophy should have made that much far too difficult." She returns to Louie and helps him get up onto the examination table and proceeds to do the rudimentary procedures to listening to breathing, heart rate, checking the pulse and blood pressure, pupil dilation, peering in his ears and mouth and testing his reflexes.

Jill initially declines the magazine, but later picks it up. She eyes the couch, but decides it would be too much effort to move there. I might as well try to figure out what things are like now that it's 2008. But she finds herself reading the same page over and over, taking in nothing. Her mind is instead occupied with many disjointed thoughts, forming no coherent pattern, providing no extra insight.

Louie lowers his voice so only Dr. Sutcliffe can hear him.

Louie look Dr. Sutcliffe in the eye and asks her a question.

So earlier when I listed off the names of people in comas. Was I right? Jill and I have the same memories from when we were unconcious, and it only took place over a few hours. I bet if others wake up they too will have similar memories. Everything is covered in Ash. Undead people chasing you. Ghosts of children covered in water. Is this part of the sickness. Group dreams, and mass haleucinations. Don't take my word for it, but if others wake up, you may want to question them as to what they remember.

Hmm.....she seems nicer than I remember. Maybe there is an explination for all of this. Still I'm going to be careful.

Re: Louie and Jill - NOBODY ELSE - MASSIVE SPOILERS

Dr. Sutcliffe looks thoughtful. "It is more likely that you both fabricated this dream together. Perhaps she mentioned a dream containing ash, you mentioned ghosts, but as each element was listed off, they were absorbed into the memories of the dream. A sort of de ja vu, if you like. Are you familiar with the scientific reasoning behind de ja vu? Where experiences are made memory before they are consciously realised, thus provoking a sense of familiarity? And as to the names, you have said yourself that you don't remember how you got into the Children's Ward or how you stole your uniform. You probably came across a list of names while you were wandering around in a daze."

Louie looks at Dr. Sutcliffe blankly.

"I know that must be what they tell you in your psychology handbook, but what I saw was different. All I ask is that when someone else wakes up you question them. Talk to them before anyone has time to plant a storey in their head. I'm willing to bet that you'll be suprised. Nothing can be that detailed and be fabricated by glancing at a list of names. I know it must be hard for you to believe. I guess you'd have to experience it to know. I'd probably think you were crazy if our spots were reversed."

Dr. Sutcliffe just smiles pleasantly. "True, you have to admit, it is far more sensible for one's own mental health to accept my version of events than of yours. If it makes you feel any better, I will be very alert to any dreams from any other people who awaken. There, you seem to be perfectly healthy, though you should of course allow us to run a few tests and you should spend a few days in observation at the hospital in case anything further happens. Now to see to Jill..." She helps him back into his wheelchair if he is willing and takes him out to the lounge.

Louie makes his way off of the examining table without a word and gets back into his wheel chair. As he is being wheeled out he turns to say something to Dr. Sutcliffe and then thinks better of it. Once he is back out in the lobby he says to Jill.

"It's alright. You'll be just fine. I'll wait out here for you and we'll talk again later."

Jill looks up from the magazine and smiles, glad that Louie doesn't think Dr. Sutcliffe is an evil cultist anymore. As the doctor rolls her in, she asks, "Is Corey going to be okay?"

A shadow passes across Dr. Sutcliffe's face. "I'm not sure. I had to leave the surgery..."

The examination begins with conscientious efficiency as Louie sits in the little lounge room just to one side of the main room. His stomach growls loudly. There seems to be a tin of biscuits - or something similar - on one of the bookcases.

Louie flags down a nurse passing by.

"Excuse me nurse. May I have one of those biscuits over there. I haven't eaten in three years and I'm wasting away to nothing over here. Oh fish and chips. That's what I could go for, or a steak....ya ya a steak. Nurse do you know where i could get a steak, and baked potato......or maybe just one of those biscuits for now."

Louie your smooth. You can kill a zombie and walk through a dark ashy hallway, with razor wires trying to get you, but as soon as you talk to a woman you babble like an idot.

"Got it in one," says Dr. Sutcliffe. Hearing Louie, she frowns. "Sure, but nibble it first. Give it a few minutes and then nibble some more. Your stomach hasn't held anything in it for quite some time."

The nurse whom Louie had flagged looks relieved that she didn't have to answer, and she hurries off.

"After three years, I'm not surprised," says Dr. Sutcliffe. "Be careful, though, that's chocolate and macademia and far too rich for you right now. Have a little bit and I'll have some blander, safer food brought up. Perhaps a jelly wouldn't trouble your tummy too badly."

A week?! Jill is about to protest this confinement, but old habits kick in and she thinks to herself, I'm sure the doctor knows best. I guess the transition forward three years will be difficult anyway; maybe some time spent in the relative safety of the hospital will be good. Besides, she was going to get to wait for her husband's arrival now. She instinctively looks for a clock, trying to estimate the amount of time it will take him to get here from work ... only to realize that she doesn't remember what time it was when she called him. A faint smile appears on her lips.

"We should get you two some jelly then, not too sweet, mind," says the nurse, as she and the doctor wheel them out into the busy waiting room. Several staff stare openly at Dr. Sutcliffe, then at the duo, and a few start whispering as they walk by. The nurse asks at the front desk for some jellies to be sent up. Then she stands by the two wheelchairs - there are no spare seats - and waits. "So..." she says. "Good dreams?"

Dr. Sutcliffe leaves the trio.

Sudden panic strikes Jill, but she has no idea why. "Oh! Please, nurse, could you keep them away from me? I really don't think I have the strength to talk to anyone right now. The nurse says nothing, merely clasps Jill's hand tightly. Two of the suited men come over to Jill. The other two start heading towards the direction Louie went. They spot him before he's a dozen feet from the door.

Louie simply sees two men in dark suits break off from a group of four and stride briskly towards him.

Louie wheels into the waiting room and notices the army uniforms. Shit they can't be here to take us already, and what the hell was with that note. He casually wheels his way over to Jill and speaks in a low voice so that only she can hear. At the same time he slips Jill the note trying to keep it casual.

We need to get out of here. If they get their hands on us we are done for. Don't panic just act casual and let me lead.

Louie stands up and makes his way around to the back of Jill's chair. He begins to slowly push her out of the waiting room and tries to find some place safe.

We'll try to contact your husband somehow, but we aren't safe. Something tells me this reality isn't any better than the last. I saw Joel. He knew me. He called me Obi Wan. That's the name he gave in the dream. It was real. We're not crazy. Let's go figure this out.

The two suits (they're not military uniforms but it is a sensible assumption that they're bad-ass government officials judging by their musculature). Louie manages to wheel past them as they approached, causing one of the men's lips to quirk into a smug smile. The two men come up from behind as the other two men move to the front of the pair. There's no way they could easily recognise the pair unless they had been given photographs of them, surely?

One of the pairs, the ones that had headed for Jill first, are only six or seven feet away.

Louie shrugs off the man's hand.

Listen...I've been poked and prodded already, and if I was that much of a risk I don't think they would have let me wander around like they have. You people are just like vultures. You don't care that this woman's husband is on his way here right now. Never mind that they haven't seen each other in three years. Or maybe there is someone in my life that would like to know I'm alive. I hear that people all over the place are waking up. Go bug one of them. Now on the other hand if you gentlemen would like to take a different aproach and treat us like human beings rather than fugitives or better yet lab rats. Then maybe I would be more inclined to be cooperative. You goverment people think that everything you do is more important than the people. Well let me tell you this I for one have been through enough. Now take your hands off of me and treat me with the respect and dignity that I deserve. For fuck's sake you haven't even told us your name. What the hell do you expect me to act like. Now we are going to sit here and wait for her husband to show up and you can scurry along and talk to the hospital administration about us. It's not like either of us has the enegry to run away.
Wow I've never talked to people like this before. It feels good. After fighting the undead these living people don't seem as scarey.

Louie waits a couple of seconds and leans down to Jill.

Don't worry Jill. I promised that you would see your husband, and I intend to keep that promise.

When Louie passed Jill the handwritten note, she quickly read it and stuck it beneath her thigh before the military men came over. What is this? Where did Louie get it? Before she can ask him, the suits come within earshot.

Jill remains quiet; Louie seems happy to do all the talking, and she's just getting more confused about everything.

Jill takes the ID from the man and carefully reads it. (She's not concealing it, but she's not showing it to Louie either. I guess he can roll Spot.) Her brow furrows and she looks up at Mr. Scott. "But I thought he did financial work."

Suddenly her hold on the ID becomes a grip and she gets a determined look in her eyes. "Look, Mr. Scott, I spoke with my husband not too long ago and he told me he was coming here. He told me to wait. So I would prefer to do just that, and once he arrives ... well, then we can figure this out."

"Well ..." sudden inspiration strikes through the fog of exhaustion and confusion, "if he's waiting there, can't I call him to speak to him before we leave? I do miss him; it has been three years." Dr. Sutcliffe marches over to the big, black van and starts peering in windows.

Jill stares at Mr. Scott, trying to decide whether to trust him or not, but can't completely make up her mind. "How could I call him before? And why did he pick up at the old office phone number I remember, which I thought was some financial company? And why would they stop his coming here? And how do you know him anyway?" Jill is a little embarrassed by her stream of demanding questions, but she was getting tired of the world not making any sense. Louie may seem drastic, painting everything as life or death and big conspiracies ... but it does seem like something weird is going on here. Maybe Dr. Sutcliffe is on our side; maybe she'll make them keep us here.

Mr. Scott looked confused. "He must have had the old phone line transfer to his new office. He's only been working there since the ... the comas." He circles in front of Dr. Sutcliffe. "Ma'am, what about Leroy?" He looks back at Jill. "We're pals. He works at ..." He turns back to Dr. Sutcliffe as she attempts to peer around him. "Ma'am! They probably stopped his coming because it'd be quicker if you just took a lift with me. I don't know, maybe the government thought that most survivors would jump at the chance to help find a cure for the rest of the coma patients. Maybe they thought that we wouldn't be treated like the enemy here. How the hell do I know?" He seems plainly exasperated now.

The other three men in suits shuffle uncomfortable. They look a whole lot more like science geeks and a lot less intimidating right now.

You seem like a nice enough guy, and I probably sound like a raving psyco. If your willing to start over so am I.

If they've managed to deter him, I'm sure it will only be momentarily. I don't want to leave, only to have him arrive and discover that I've gone. So, I'd like ... A well-built man in a suit walks towards the hospital with a swift pace, coming from the parking. His trenchcoat has a badly overturned collar, as if put on in a rush, and forgotten. In his hands he carries a boquet of red roses.

As he comes into sight he comes to an abrupt halt, nearly fumbling and dropping the roses as he stops.

"Jill." he simply says trying to suppress tears, almost afraid from coming near or touching her.

"But that's not important. You're important now. How do you feel?" he asks after he pegs a kiss on her cheek and straightens himself.

Jill sniffles a little, and manages to bring her tears under control. "I'm okay, I think. Just very tired, is all."

"Oh, they're beautiful! Thank you."
A smile breaks across her face. "They're lovely."

She gets an odd look on her face as she goes to take them and realizes that she's still holding the ID in her hand. "I, um, Mr. Scott gave me your ID." She hands it back to him.

"I take it others are waking up as well?" he asks, half looking at the doctor "Still no hint as to why this all happened?"

"Right, doc?" he asks the doctor.

Well from no one, and every one. The dream we shared was not a pleasant one, but it was very real. It's too painful to go into detail, but some people have been acting strange since we woke up. Keep in mind. If they experienced the same thing we did they may be too scared to tell anyone. I can't say I blame them either. I mean I saw things that I never wanted to see, or ever want to see again. I think that one of us should talk to them in private. If they did experience what we did they would know us. I'll do it. Louie's shoulder slump as he braces himself for the storey.

Just to clarify I wasn't lieing. Terrible things did happen while I was asleep. Everything was covered in ash, and almost everyone I knew was gone. We spent most of the time running from various undead creatures. I was finally attacke by a bunch of children covered in water. That's when I woke up. I know that seems unbelievable Carson, but that's what I saw. Heck Jill saw it too. I'm sure there are many who saw it. When I woke up I listed off the names of a bunch of people that I saw there and they were all in coma's themselves. If I just woke up how would I know who was in a coma. Believe me Carson I have no reason to lie to you.

Jill's wheelchair squeaks and jerks as it stops rolling smoothly along. Charlie notices the difference immediately. At first he'd probably assume that something got caught beneath the wheels. The wheelchair didn't look this battered a moment ago... Did it? It must have always been this way. After all, it's not particularly worn out, it just obviously needs to have the wheels oiled and the fabric doesn't look in the best condition. Perhaps something knocked a spoke or something and made what was previously easy a little harder...

Jill stares around the room, trying to understand that she spent three years of her life in here. It's funny to pack up things that you don't remember bringing. "So this is where I've been? When I woke up I was in the Children's Ward with a book on my lap. As if I'd just nodded off. I don't know how I got there." She frowns.

Jill smiles. "No, of course, that makes sense. It's just ... everything is so strange." She notices the flowers on her bedside table and looks down at the fresh bouquet in her lap. "Did you bring those as well?" Her smile grows even wider and she carefully stands up, pulling Charlie's arms around her waist for support. "For me it feels like only a day has passed. I horrible day, but just one." She frowns again. "Charlie, I'm so sorry. I was gone, asleep, for three years. I imagine it was hard for you."

"Well, yes, but it's not your fault at all..." Charlie says, giving an ackward smile "You'd have to be insane to blame the victim of this all."

"I must admit I'm quite pissed off at the doctors for failing to find even but a clue to what had happened for 3 years now... Though that's misplaced anger as well."

Jill enthusiastically returns the kiss. Somehow everything seems safer, and the fears that had been building since her hallucination start to melt away. Everything will be okay, now that Charlie's here.

"Anyhow, I'm just happy to have her back. She'll need some medical care though, since she hasn't eaten anything solid for quite a while and so on." he continues "And I was wondering if you could arrange for that nurse that you had when you broke your ankle? She seemed very good at her job. If you could arrange it, that would be nice."

"Also, Mr Scott dropped by the hospital for some reason. You know, that chemist from DSTL from the section we audited?" he asks "Well, he came by and tried to convince people that had woken up to come with him before I arrived."

"Pretty weird... He also gave Jill my visitor's pass." he adds "You might want to try to find out what's that all about. I can't really fathom any reason for him to do that."

Jill feels sleepy as Charlie weaves through traffic. The world is so very bright and the sun causes her eyes to slip down. She snuggles, almost instinctively, into the warmth and softness of the car seat. It's a nice day outside. Blue skies, a smattering of white clouds. They pass a park where a mother sits on a picnic rug while her two children chase each other in circles. They pass a school where even more children dance and play.

Finally, as they turn the corner into that oh so familiar street, Jill feels the warmth of nearness to home and it sets her off nodding into a brief nap.

Charlie's ear piece erupts with static loud enough to disturb Jill and deafen Charlie in one ear.

Charlie quickly pulls the bluetooth earpiece out of his ears and lets it drop onto his lap.

The garage door opens smoothly, allowing them entrance into its neat interior. There is a vague smell of oil and grease from where the car leaked transmission fluid a few months ago and from where a spare 2 litre bottle of petrol was chewed open by some awful rodent. The smell is a little nauseating.

A door leads into the cramped laundry. Through there, a tight corridor within which a narrow staircase shares space with a table and mirror. Thankfully, the rest of the rooms in the two-storey townhouse are not nearly so claustrophobic.

Charlie leads Jill past the cramped spaces and halls into the livingroom, furtively checking his cellphone and pocketing it again. Once in the living room, he motions for her to sit down and get comfortable, as he quickly starts to gather up newspaper clippings and files spread all over the table and even a few lying on the floor. With a guilty and embarassed smile he disappears into the kitchen.

The first glass of wine goes straight to Jill's head, making the world spin in a somewhat pleasant manner. There is a knock on the front door, a light rap. Nathaniel Jefferson hops up and down on one foot, his nine-year-old face beaming mischeviously, as he came dashing into the room and up to Jill. "Hey Jill! Hey!" She hardly recognised him. He had gotten so much older since the tender age of six when she had last seen him.

Toby comes in, holding his wife's hand, as per usual, and looking all the world like an eager newlywed couple as they come in after their little boy to take their seats on the other couch, overlooking the coffee table.

"Well, you're looking pretty good," said Doreen. "You've lost a lot of weight... I guess that's what we all need. A three year stint in the hospital to sort out the excess baggage!" She grips her own pot belly for good measure.

Jill is a little sad when their visitors arrive at the door. She had so much enjoyed just being with Charlie, and interacting with people who hadn't seen her in three years was a little intimidating. Luckily these feelings are damped by the pleasant fuzziness the champagne brought.

"Nathaniel! Wow, you've grown up so much. You must be excellent at football now." She smiles at his exuberance.

Jill greats his parents. "Toby, Doreen, so good to see you." Doreen's comment causes Jill to look down at her own frame and loose-fitting dress. She had always been slender before, now I look like a skeleton. "Not what I would recommend," slips out of Jill's lips, but she manages to finish with a smile, turning it into a joking comment.

Somewhat befuddled, Jill reaches for something else to say. "Well, I don't even know what to ask. I've missed so much."

"Calm down, Nat," says Doreen, rolling her eyes and pouring herself a glass of champagne. The overhead lights flicker. "Or do you need some Ritalin?"

Jill smiles and seems to begin to relax as Nathaniel asks her to try to change his mother's mind. He's still the same boy I know, just a little bigger.

As Doreen begins to speak, Jill's eyes are momentarily caught by the blank television screen. She glances to the empty spot next to her on the couch, a frown suddenly on her face. When the lights flicker she jumps a little, as if trying to shake something off of her shoulders.
"Aww, mum, you're never any fun. I never get to see this girl. Gotta admit, though, I don't do too much reading no more. Not since you've been in a coma."

Jill grabs a pillow and folds it around her head, knowing that it can't block out the sound that she isn't really hearing ... and yet she tries anyway. Tears slide down her checks at the embarrassment of having acting so strangely in front of her guests, at her fear that she really has gone crazy since these hallucinations have followed her home, and because she desperately just wants to fall asleep but is scared to do so in case she goes back to her nightmare.

She pulls herself up until she is half-sitting, leaning against the pillows and the headboard. She is now crying quietly into the pillow, lost in a sense of helplessness. At least when I was asleep he didn't have to deal with having a crazy wife.

The nurse's comment reminds Jill that there are still a whole lot of people stuck inside the nightmare, if that's really what's going on, and helps break her reticence; however, she still is obviously embarrassed. Jill sits up and holds out a hand to her husband. "Charlie, if the nurse is done, can we just sit on the couch and watch a movie or something and pretend like none of this happened? I just want everything to be like it was. And I'm afraid of falling asleep, but I'll feel much better if you're next to me." She does look exhausted, far beyond the end of her rope.

"Of course..." Charlie answers with a warm smile "I'd like nothing better than to pick up where we left off."

"Still, there is nothing to fear. Certainly not sleep."

"But don't worry: I'll protect you." he adds almost as an afterthought, but Jill hears stern conviction in his voice.

"If you're having difficulty coping, maybe you should talk to someone and get it off your chest?" he says "I'm always here for you, but if you prefer not to talk to me, I understand. I'm sure I can get you an appointment with the best psychiatrist in London, if you'd like... Money is far less important to me than your wellbeing..."

"I don't mind talking to you," although she does seem a little embarrassed now, "but I think I may need professional help to deal with my hallucinations." She frowns, lost in thought for a moment. "But let's deal with that tomorrow, okay? Maybe they'll just go away, but if not, we can call someone tomorrow. Today I just want to be with you." She smiles again.

"Do you want to see if the nurse is almost done?"

"Erm, yes," said Dr. Sutcliffe, wringing her hands together. "There have been a few. No one new, of course, but it still gives us hope. I just wanted to speak to you about whether there were any experiences while you were asleep. There have been reports of coma patients experiencing some visual or auditory memories."

Jill's face drains of color. She clears her throat. "Yes, doctor, I was also in a world covered in ash. I was in the Children's Ward and some," she begins shivering, "some wire thing was ripping the children apart." Her last words are whispered. "I tried to save those I could," she rubs her leg in memory.

Oh, God, no. Jill feels herself about to fall apart, unable to deal with this anymore. But she takes a deep breath, somehow finding another small amount of strength left. She stares down at her hands, tensely held in her lap, as she speaks quietly. "I found myself in the Children's Ward. I don't know why, but I had brought construction stuff with me and had sealed up all the doors and windows. I guess I knew what was coming somehow. There was a dark cloud coming. They said it was some type of chemical accident ... but I don't know. When it came overhead we heard horrible sounds from the rest of the hospital. We couldn't help them, but we could keep the children safe. They were all asleep, they had been drugged by Dr. Bernard Scott. I ..."

She closes her eyes and a tear slips down her cheek. "I was tricked into opening the door. It's my fault. Once it was open everything got so cold and ... something came and knocked a bed over and left. It was so cold and ash covered everything. It was in the air. I went to get a heater for the children, and when I came back ... there was some wire thing in the lavatory. It sent out wires to rip children apart ..." She brings her hands up to cover her face and starts shaking.

Jill brings her hands down from her face, but keeps her eyes closed. She's not crying, but the shaking continues. "It was just me and Jason and Brianna, but then Louie and um, Ronald, that puppet guy came along. Ronald watched Brianna, and Louie and I tried to run into the ward to grab kids while Jason threw things to distract the wires. It was growing! More and more wires, searching the room for kids to rip apart ... " She takes a deep breath. "We got out as many as we could, but then one of the wires cut a big slice out of my thigh and I tried but ... the wire thing had started possessing the children. It almost tricked us. And then there was a helicopter or something outside the window, or was it a huge bird? I think I shot it? And it pulled the wire thing out the window."

Jill opens her eyes and stares at the doctor. "So we didn't save all the children, but we got some of them out okay. And then more people showed up. Um, Aidan from Children's Services, and Nurses Sarah and Hammond. And some of the children were awake now. I think we were going to try to take them up to the roof where a helicopter was supposed to be waiting, but ... I felt so tired. I think I fell asleep or something, and that's when I woke up here. Sitting in the Children's Ward with an open book on my lap."

Sarah speaks into the phone: "Hi, Charlie. I'm not sure how my call got through to you. I was trying to call my dad on a mobile he's carrying, and somehow the signal must have gotten misdirected. I'm glad I got through to you, though. Jill, you're not crazy, this is real. I'm so glad you woke up from that coma and you're safe now. I wish I knew how you did it. I know this must sound hard to believe, but it's still happening to me, right now, and it's all real. I don't know how I'm able to communicate with you, but it's good that I did since I know why this is happening and I think I know how to stop it.

"My father and Brianna got sent back in time to World War II and they met some people there: Daniel Blackworth, Anna Blaize, a chap named Morrison, and a bunch of others. Somehow they all ended up back in the 21st century, a few years ago. They were held prisoner by the DSTL all this time, reliving the last few years. My father told them what was due to happen, and they were supposed to prevent it, but they failed. They made a deal with some powerful entity that wants to find something in London. I don't know what it wants to find or exactly where it is, but it showed them historical sites in London on Google Images when they brought it up. It provided and empowered three sigils that my father implanted in Blackworth, Anna, and Morrison, but the three of them had to sell their souls to make them work. They protected this place in some ways, but Morrison died because of a mistake I made and now our defenses are lowered.

"Their captors at the DSTL broke the deal, though. They didn't try to find what they were supposed to, and they wouldn't let my father and the others out to search for it either. The entity got impatient, and that's why it finally sent that storm over the whole world and turned all those people to ash. The ash still seems alive, though. It moves with purpose. I think the entity is using the ash to search, and maybe it's using the monsters the same way. If we could just find what it's looking for, we might be able to put a stop to all this. It seems to be leading us, guiding us to where it needs us to go. Actively looking for it seems to decrease the frequency of monster attacks too."

It takes Jill a moment to realize it, but Charlie's really speaking to Nurse Sarah--it's not a hallucination. At this point Jill is too exhausted by everything to decide if she's more or less concerned that it's not just all in her mind.

"Yes, please try to look it up," says Sarah. "I don't know how to recognize whoever we're trying to find, but I kind of get feelings when I'm on the right track. We'll wait on the line. There's this strange, locked metal door that's the only way to go forward, and I think this entity wants us to go through it. The only way seems to be to put out all the lights, but something else will happen when we do it and it might break our connection. I also want to try to get through to my father one last time before we pass through the door. Just in case we ever get cut off, I'll give you my mobile's number and the numbers of the two mobiles my father and Dahlia have. There's no guarantee you'll be able to get through again, so I'll keep the connection open as long as I can. My battery's running low, though." She rattles off the phone numbers. "Jill, how are you holding up? I haven't heard you say much in a while."

OOC--Can Jill hear this? I thought she had handed the phone to Charlie ... If she can, she'll sigh and reply, "Yeah, I'm here".

Jill sits on the couch, exhausted. Maybe she could just give up trying to understand what was going on. I got tricked into thinking Blackworth was a bad guy when he wasn't, and when Morrison locked Cael and me up without cause it seemed to confirm my worst fears. I...I started trying to help him tie her up so she wouldn't alert anyone. Then I tried to reason with her, but she was so afraid and she hit us with a ring of fire. I must have jumped in front of him, since I took the brunt of it and got knocked out. If Dr. Sutcliffe was there...maybe Brianna woke up too! If you see her, please tell her we're not mad at her for burning us, and I'm so terribly sorry for all the grief I've caused her. We're so much alike we could have been sisters, and I understand everything she's been through. My father loves her like she was his own daughter, and he and his friends all miss her."

Then they clearly hear gun shots ring out. Sarah gasps. "Hold on, we've got trouble." There's the sound of a scuffle, a door shutting, Sarah's voice, no longer so close to the phone.

"The rational thing to do is try to accept our situation and try to resolve it. Even if we're both totally insane and delerious, I see no other road to travel down to. Nor that it would matter in any way if we didn't." Charlie says with a sadlooking smile.

"Either we go back to the hospital or we go to the DSTL facility, but I must say those... things... outside at the helipad did not make it look inviting." he says "Or Museum Station, as suggested by this Sarah."

Jill continues to press the phone against her ear, trying to hear what's happening to Sarah. She'll stop talking at the first recognizable sound.

"Okay." She smiles a little. "I'll just stop trying to understand it all, I guess." She looks at Charlie, as if sizing him up for the first time. "When did you get a gun? Is that even legal?"

The mobile phone, that had produced only faraway voices and panting before, now produces a familiar voice once more: "Jill, are you still there? I'm okay. It was one of those zombies, like the one Carson turned into that attacked me. Jason, the teenager with terminal cancer from the Children's Ward, also became a zombie after he died. It had followed Brianna and Ronald back in time, and my father stopped it and saved them. He stunned it with a taser and then amputated its limbs. Maybe fire would work too, though. We didn't have anything to stun this one, so we had to run, but she bit Cael. Louie had said not to let them bite you no matter what. If you can, please find out what he knows about the zombies. I've got to save Cael!"

A little time passes, then over the phone: "I think Cael's going to be okay," Sarah says. "It doesn't look like his skin was broken. I'm not sure if you'll be able to call me back, especially since my battery's low, but I did give you my number as well as the ones for the mobiles my father and Dahlia have." She repeats the numbers and tells her which ones go to which phones. "If you're going to the hospital, maybe you can find out if Brianna or anyone else woke up. If you do talk to my father before we find him, please let him know we're okay, and that we'll be taking the lift up to B2 and catching up to him from behind."

In the distance, they hear the wail of police sirens rise and fall. The rain falls monotonously, keeping up a steady beat on the garage roof. It's louder in here than it was in the house. Somewhere within the garage, water drips from a leak in the roof. Jill remembers vaguely that Charlie was supposed to fix that. He must have never gotten around to it. Well, hopefully that was the very same leak. Anything else and it might mean the whole garage roof needed replacing.

The storm has subsided into a heavy rain as they go to leave the house. The car, safely esconsed in the garage, seems strangely alien. There is paint missing, a few scratches near the door handle and a few droplets of blood on the driver's seat, that wasn't there before. Charlie notices while Jill, who has gone around to the other side of the car, is distractedby what appears to be a piece of colourful card slipped just beneath the passenger side seat, one corner containing a balloon is peeking out at them.

Charlie inspects the chipping paint. He frowns heavily as he tries to see if it chipped due to some external factor, or simply of old age... What an odd thought that is...

Re: NOR - Jill & Charlie's thread

It's unlikely to be old age. Not much paint is removed but what is removed are in short scraped lines around the handle. The metal, itself, has been scratched also. Other than that, the car seems fine. The paint elsewhere appears undamaged, though it'll probably cost a bit to repair the scraped off sections of paint.

Jill withdraws a: "Congratulations on your Baby!" Hallmark card. A teddy bear dances on the cover, carrying balloons, a wide smile on its brown, upturned face. Yet something about the smile lacks the comforting cheer of most Hallmark cards. It seems almost as though it were sneering at her. And why would a bear on a Hallmark card have such wicked-looking claws drawn on?

Over the phone: "This is Dr. Carpenter. I'm in the chemistry lab, and I'm going to need some help with the patients here. Please send a nurse over."

As she reaches the trunk, there's the sound of something little hammering away from the inside, as though something were kicking it from the inside. She could also hear a baby's cry, though the crying sounds far away, and seems to bleed into the sound of sirens and then back into the sound of a baby crying.

A little girl sits up in the trunk of the car, knees tucked up to her chest, wearing an old-fashioned dress. Her clothes and hair are sodden, her punctured eyes weeping blood and pus as she turns her face to regard Jill. Her upper arms end in stumps though translucent skin makes out the outline of an elbow, lower arm, hand, fingers. "Mummy?" she asks, and they can see that her teeth are missing as well.

Charlie can see the figure, though his gun has temporarily been blocked.

The little girl reaches forward for her in a slow, unnatural movement. Only her stumps remain and yet Jill almost feels as though there were a hand outstretched and pleading. The garage seems unnaturally dark. The shadows lengthening. The dripping seems to match the beat of her heart.

And then the garage is normal again. The little girl gone. Only a stain remains in the boot of the car. Charlie's phone rings.

Charlie looks up surprised, but is happy the facts finally started to sink in.

"Eversince I left college. So not long after we first met." Charlie replied "Studies in economics, good results in ROTC and part of the sportsteam must have drawn someone's attention."

They needed more eyes on the ground with the War on Terror, so they boosted people with management and administrative jobs like me. But don't think of any James Bond stuff, that's not how it works... The silence stretches thickly between them as though sound were syrup. The world takes on a dream-like quality with lights washing across the wet road as the rain comes down. The windshield wipers make a muffled sound against the windshield as they go. And in the distance, looms the hospital, Mercy Cross, so close they could now glimpse it, shadowed beneath the storm clouds.

The radio comes on by itself and a song starts to play:

"A groan of tedium escapes me, startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be. Otherwise I can’t go on.
Draining patience. Drain vitality."

It seems strangely familiar to Jill. Idea roll to remember.

Jill sees his motion. "Not bad! He was the other person who woke up from the coma with me. He was the one on the phone before we left home." She jumps out of the car and runs around to Louie. "Are you okay? How did you get here?" She anxiously surveys him for injuries. "I thought you were back in the other reality."

Louie shakes his head to clear his visions. Yah I'm fine. Suddenly he realizes who's in front of him and he gasps in relief as he bounds to his feet. Looking around he realizes where he is, or at least where he isn't. He hugs her quickly feeling the joy of finding someone he can trust. Just as quickly he lets her go, and drags the scooter out of the way. I'll tell you everything I know, but let's get out of here first.

Louie gets in the back seat and slumps down. Hello again Charlie. Well guys I don't know where to start. You'll probably think I'm crazy like everyone else in this reality. Louie laughs, and it sounds a little unstable. Still it's nice seeing people again. Louie's resolve cracks little by little as he speaks, and by the time he finishes he's sobbing into his hands. Come on Louie get a hold of yourself.

The first time was easy Louie looks around nervously. I was walking down the hall of the hospital, and I just fell asleep. When I woke up I was wearing my black robe, and had my shotgun back. He feels for his gun shocked that he's still got his robe and gun. Last time he woke up in someone else's clothes. This time he even brought a scooter with him. The strange things was there was nobody left. So I got myself a scooter. I was going to go to the library and see if I could find something to help. Needless to say I got side tracked calling you. Louie does his best to squirm out of the robe. He's still got his janitor clothes on underneath, and they're making him feel like he sticks out. Grunting through his effort he carries on. I got chased away from the gas station and made a run for it on my scooter. Then I got lost and the next thing I knew I was kissing your windshield.

Louie looks at Charlie cautiously before answering. Sure I know what happened, but that's not important. The important thing is stopping it, but I don't know how to stop it anymore. I could have stopped it, but I just couldn't do it. Louie trails off as he speaks, and eventually gets really quiet staring out the window.

Louie notices for the first time where they were headed. I don't know if we should go in there. I collapsed in the hallway and people just walked around me like I wasn't there. When I woke up I was back in the ash. I don't know for sure, but I suspect whatever is happening is worse in there. I was headed to the library when I phased back into this reality. Supposedly there is a book there that may help. Louie looks at the others in the car. He's still thankful to be around other people and will go along with what they do. Just a thought, take it or leave it.

Louie sighs deeply. This explanation never has Louie coming off looking very good. There is an ancient evil that resides in a lake under the hospital. I belonged to a cult, who's job it was to guard this evil. It was my job to sacrifice a young girl named Brianna to the lake so that it would recede and go back to the way things were. Louie pauses long enough to gain control of himself before continuing on. The ash world came faster and harder than anyone expected. I had nothing to do with that part. I was just as surprised as everyone else, but I'm sidetracking. Anyways Brianna and I became friends, which is part of the ritual. But when the time came, I couldn't do it. I've let everyone down cause I couldn't kill a child. There's nothing to say that it would have worked after the fact, but I should have tried. Louie turns and looks out the window again. A tear streams down his cheek. Who am I kidding. I still couldn't do it, but there may be another way. There is supposed to be a book at the library that has some information in it. If I could find it we might be able to reverse everything.

"You took the moral choice then, no sense beating yourself up about it." Charlie notes "Though it's impossible to say which of the two was the lesser evil in hindsight, but on a personal level, you did the right thing."

"We'll drive to the library, but if it turns out you're toying with us, I'll make you sorry you didn't redecorate my car's hood with brainmatter when we first ran into eachother."

Louie shifts at the sight of the traffic. Something bigger than us is controlling events. Earlier, in the other dimension...world...whatever I was in. I tried to go back to the hospital and something wouldn't let me. Now when we are about to drive away from the hospital there's suddenly traffic. Of course I could be crazy and this could just be traffic. Louie laughs at the thought. Somehow the thought of him being crazy is easier to accept than what he believes is real.

OCC: is this a normal hour for traffic jams in the city?

IC: Charlie looks out for possibilities of bypassing the traffic jam, such as a bus or taxi lane, or an ambulance coming out of the hospital the same way they are driving.

There seems to be no easy way of bypassing it. The traffic jam is unusual ... but not deeply so for London. Any low-level car accident could have caused it. Though no one can see any accident within view, that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Louie looks out the window at the hospital. I guess that means we need to go in there. Maybe we just need to do something before it'll let us leave. Whatever happens don't let anyone separate us. An old man, a pregnant woman and a woman with blonde hair coming partially loose from its bun, the strands going everywhere in a wild frizz, approach the car through the throng. They seem to be heading straight for your car.

Bernard nods his thanks to the people in the car. "Much obliged." He helps Melissa into her seat and attempts to keep the girl calm. Once steeled he looks around the car.
"Reality shifts? Is that what's going on? Makes sense as much as anything. This lady beside me thinks the hospital is occupied by physical manifestations of our fears. Louie sits back a moment and thinks. Something about Charlie has been bugging him from the beginning, and it's right on the edge of his thoughts. Suddenly it hits him like a hammer and the weight of the realization pins him to his seat momentarily. His temper. Her bruises that Louie saw, what seems like so long ago. She lied to him about it, but Louie knew. His father used to beat his mother, and him. There's no hiding that from someone who's been through it.

Louie's heated gaze threatens to burn a hole in the back of Charlies head as he grasps his shot gun in both hands. He keeps it lowered, but is ready to strike at a moments notice. With menace in his voice, that shocks even him he confronts the man. So Charlie how long have you been beating your wife. The clicking of a shotgun being cocked sounds through the cab of the car. Does it make you feel like a big man?

Charlie sighs audibly, as if loosing patience with a small child.

"What exactly do you think you're doing? Are you going to shoot me for whatever misguided reason you think justified? Are you going to risk crashing this car and the people in it by blowing a fist sized hole in my torso?" he asks "I think not. Hell, I don't think you've got the balls to do it, but most of all I hope you've got the brainpower to realise that's not going to help in any way."

"And regardless of what you think you know, I love my wife above all else. She is my world, my everything..." he says, as he gently lays his right hand on top of hers and gives her a reassuring pinch "And now that I finally have her back, I'm not about to let an airhead endanger us being together."

"I'd suggest you quickly aim that thing elsewhere, before accidents happen..." he adds, looking back into the review mirror, straight into Louie's face.

Louie smiles mockingly. Wow that sounds very reasonable. You know my father was a reasonable guy when his temper wasn't flaring. He always made it seem like he loved us and only wanted to be with us. Louie laughs at the thought. I fell for that more than once. You don't know how badly I wanted that to be true. Louie gestures with his gun to Charlie. The whole time his finger is on the trigger. You know people like you never think they are wrong, so why should you be any different. As for not having the balls to pull the trigger...you might be surprised. You don't even know what love is do you?

Louie lets out a grunt of frustration. You sound just like my mother. Most of the time they are nice, but every once in a while the temper flares and BAM, bruises mysteriously appear. Each time she made it her fault, probably like you do, but it's not. The good times don't out weigh the bad. No one has the right to hit you..no one. Louie takes a cleansing breath and looks at his hands. They are shaking and his knuckles are white from gripping his gun so tightly. He forces himself to relax his hands and lowers the gun. Tears fill his eyes, and he turns his head to look out the window. Finally he regains his composure and looks back at Jill. It's not right, and not matter what you say I won't change my mind. But it's your life and I won't do something you don't want me to. Under his breath Louie mutters, not loud enough to be heard. I love you more than he does.

Louie seemed soothed by Jill's words, but as soon as Charlie speaks again his temper flares anew. He lifts the gun to the back of the seat and pushes it in so he can feel it. No you think about this. If you so much as harm one hair on her head ever again I'll personally blow a new hole through you....capeesh. Louie tries on the gangster word hoping it would add effect to his menace, but his voice cracks as he says it taking away any effect it would have had. He removes the gun from the seat after delivering his threat, and changes the subject. This is the longest car ride I've ever been on. Are we ever going to get there?

They reach the library through the traffic-clogged streets of a London lunch time, checking directions in the street directory as they go in order to bring themselves back onto the right track. The sky is fairly clear, with only a few fluffy clouds breaking up its pristine quality. The car pauses one street away at the lights and the occupants of the car watch as a dozen children dressed in uniforms cross the road. Then they move off and drive along that road.
Image
The library hulks midway down one road, encompassing much of the street, its entrance shrouded in deep shadow. Birds flutter about the nearby trees, singing prettily despite the local devastation. The library itself appears to be over a hundred years old and is showing its age.
