Cinemaplex Car Park

The Hoyts Cinema parking lot was surprisingly full considering it was only four o'clock. Then again, judging by the proximity to a few megastores, it isn't surprising people had taken advantage of the free parking. The sky is bright with only a few scattered clouds moving leisurely above. So much for the rain cloud the radio had briefly mentioned before cutting out in a flurry of static. Must be some kind of interference. It had taken out all of the radio stations several minutes ago.

She parks her car in one of the few spots available, near a large brown 4WD that would obscure her view of the parking lot when reversing, and make leaving the car park a slow and painful process. At least the park isn't far from the cinema and is getting some shade from a tall tree whose leaves, while yellow, have yet to fall from the branch.

The Hoyts Cinema is a large, brown brick building that squats over an underground car park, a sweeping set of rounded stairs, flanked by twin ramps, move up to its glass front and trio of double doors. She can see several posters tacked to the walls - The Simpsons Movie, Sicko, Shrek the Third, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Life Free or Die Hard.

Today there is also a Fun Pack Trio starting soon: Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. It seems it gets more horrific with each movie.

Gently pulling her small Ford Escort into a parked position, Liz aligns it as best she can. The nose juts out just past the cars beside her. She continues to fuss over it until firmly telling herself to Stoppit, right now. You know better. Much. Better.

Sighing resignedly, the young journalist swings smoothed legs through the open door. The darker, semi-long skirt she decided to wear today rustles softly. Deep blue denim. This brings a weary smile to her lips. Lips paled from pure exhaustion, face lighter than usual.

Blue eyes cast themselves around on some unknown instinct. Who would tail her here? She's just come in from Wales. Just come in from a long drive. Who the hell, in their right mind, would drive that entire way and just give up? Not even watch her trio of movies? Liz shakes her head stubbornly and makes her click-clack way to the doors.

Mark pulls up in the rental car supplied to him by his new employer. He had just gotten off the plane, checked into the Inn, had a quick shower, and was out the door again to go make one of the biggest deals of his life. His last employer had reccomended him to a friend, and Mark had received the call last month. Flown halfway around the world, put up in the luxury suite, and paid half in advance. "All for one little book." Mark thinks as he smiles. Yes this could be his last job if he really wanted it to be, but Mark had no intentions of quitting "the business' after this one. He steps out of the car with his bag on his shoulder, and makes his way to the movie theatre to kill a few hours before he meets with his employer.

Self-consciously, she bends slightly to smooth the front of her skirt. Stiletto thigh-high boots reach underneath the hem and further. A thick mane of darker brown hair falls over her shoulder, revealing gently sloping bones. As she stands, the shirt settles itself properly, small, lacy ruffles springing back to life.

Polka dots cover her back, a bow on the midpoint to secure her front. A marvelous tan, the fluorescent lights create a healthy light that is immediately obvious. It dances across the bronze flesh like flames in a breeze. The line continues to inch forward, each group that receives their tickets jovial and excited.

Her purse, a small thing tucked snugly between her arm and her ribs, and tinged a light lavender. Liz rolls her eyes impatiently, pulling out a notepad and pen from the tiny 'pocket'. Near instantly, she's busy writing another dead-end story, rapidly flipping pages. She runs out of room on each piece of paper quickly, script neat and small. When she's finished, and returning it to its place, she looks up again.

The frown is there automatically, settling heavily on her fair features. Bright eyes stare at the back of the person in front of her, tapping her toes anxiously.

The teller is a middle-aged woman with a gently heaving bosom and a dedicated smile. She quickly sells her tickets to the teenagers in front of Liz and then moves onto her. "The weather's better than before," says the woman with a nod, her nametag registering her as Janet Blackmore. "Here to see the movie marathon?"

A dog barks nearby as a blind person approaches, hair hidden by a hoodie, thick black glasses sat upon the person's nose, a hand gently resting on their hip. The dog is the blind person's own. A golden labrador set up in its harness. The blind person goes through the double doors into the cinema.

"Likes to meet with his friends and listen to the movies," says Janet with a conspirational nod.

"so If I promise to shut my eyes, and just listen do I get in free as well?" Mark smiles at his little joke, and everyone else just stares at him blankly. Mark looks the beautiful young woman in front of him up and down. If it weren't for the Backpack full of stolen goods he might have struck up a conversation with her, but at the moment isn't feeling very social. . He shuffles his feet forward in line. Moving ever closer to the box office, and ever further away from his latest illicit activities.

"Yes I am, party of one, please." She nods in response to Janet. Liz has no knowledge of the thief behind her, though if she looked, hours later she could give a perfect profile for the cops. Or of course, for a column suggestion. She slides the strap of the purse down her arm, opening it up and shifting through her belongings. A flip phone with camera and GPS is set against the lining, nail file and tweezers re-situated until she withdraws a wallet.

"How much?" Never looking up from her average-sized woman's billfold. It has a fashionable 'L' on the front, a change purse on the adjacent side. As she unzips it, she's flipping through bills while waiting on an answer. Dental floss and a travel pack of q-tips are exposed in her open bag. The rest is hidden from view by her arm and body. Elizabeth cocks her head coyly, a smile playing on her lips. Apparently she doesn't mind standing there, wallet exposing her minimal wealth and waiting on this teller once more.

Posture is relaxed, as though she hasn't a care in the world. Which, when given thought, she could pass off. Brunette hair falls in faint, hot-ironed ringlets about her shoulders, subtly curling like a fresh-removed apple peel. She smooths it out of her face, smiling brightly, black and rectangular plastic-rimmed glasses sliding down her lovely sloping nose.

Janet passes her the ticket. "Cinema 7. It starts in twenty minutes." She turns her attention to Mark. "That bag looks heavy. Must be terrible having to lug that around. What movie are you here to see?"

The main lobby is red with a burnished orange ceiling and luxuriant maroon carpeting. Several circular couches encircle the pillars. A liquor bar sits off to one side, staffed by a weary blonde woman who is leaning down, her chin resting on her arms, staring at the slushy machine as the metal twists through the drink. The lobby smells clean, like pine fresh mixed with ozone, freshly vacuumed and freshly mopped.

The cinemas are past the confectionary bar, opposite the men and women's toilet doors. A red rope blocks off most of the entryway, staffed by a tall, awkward-looking teenage boy, also in uniform. In the middle of the lobby are a series of giant posters and cut-out boards from the movies and three games machines: Big Game Hunter IV, Wonder Boy III and Terror Alert.

"Why the triple feature of course" says Mark as he shifts his bag on his shoulder. "Ya lot's of term papers to write, but there is always time for zombie flicks." Mark smiles "What is the damage on those tickets?"
Mark looks eagerly towards the bar. "I sure could use a Guinness" thinks Mark.

Liz steps out of line, re-zipping her wallet and closing her purse. Shaking her head with a sigh, she heads instinctively towards the liquor bar. After all, who wants to watch a horrific film without a wonderfully alcohol-packed drink? She inclines her chin to the blond, asking simply, "What's available?"

Her gaze sweeps around, finally noticing Mark, and blinking several times afterward. Shaking her head again, she returns her attention to the bartender.

Mark walks over and sits at the end of the bar looking aroudn the room at all of the soon to be released movies.
"Shitty, stupid, that might be good, pffft gay,and of course the one he's been waiting months to see... The Dark Knight. If only they had let Frank Miller Direct it." Mark looks up and sees the girl at the bar. She looks away and orders her drink from the bartender. "I wonder if I will have time to get food before this thing starts."

Thomas Pulls up into the parking garage of the cinemaplex making sure to back his car in. He grabs his laptop case and hurys into the cinemaplex hoping to catch a sandwich at the bar and hop on the y-fi to check his email before the show. He gets in line for the movie and waits his turn to buy a ticket.

Thomas arrives to find the last person in line, sauntering away, cursing about some movie he had thought was on at the cinema. He is able to cruise straight up to the ticket booth and buy a ticket from the now frowning Janet.

The blonde at the bar jerks, confused, at the sound of another person's voice. "I'm sorry?" Then she points at a bar menu on the counter with a shrug.

Mark orders a drink, and thirstily gulps down the entire glass. "Keep them coming if you don't mind dear. Not alot of time before the movie, and I want to be good and Pissed." Mark sees Thomas walk in and sit down at the bar. Mark nods to him, and ask he and Lizzie if they are there for the Zombie marathon. Mark always gets friendlier when he's had a drink or two.

"Ah, I'd like this, please. A, uh, peach martini? I hope, anyhow." Turning at the sound of a deeply throaty male voice, Liz shrugs nonchalantly. "Of course, it's the only reason to go to a theater, isn't it?" Her mouth quirks into a smile, "Re-animated corpses, walking around and eating human flesh, yummy." The comment is obviously sarcastic, as she lays her wallet in her lap, along with the lavender purse and continues brightly. "What about you?"

Thomas orders 2 dogs and a coke and takes notice of liz at the bar talking about zombies
movies to mark. Thomas pulls out his laptop and set his y-fi up to recieve then packs it away making sure to leave it on . Thomas eats hurriedly then goes to the bathroom to adjust the 45 under his suit jacet and to prepare his mini cam to record the zombie marathon and broadcast it to his laptop. Stoping at the mirror he thinks back to the girl in the polko dot top .... Thomas walks back out to the bar and sit next to the girl in the polko dot shirt. He asks her the time.....

Shilo pauses at the gate, commanding her guide dog, Sadie, to sit as she speaks to the awkward boy ripping ticket stubs.

"Which way is the movie marathon please?"

The teenager obviously is new on the job, and hasn't seen her here before. He gawks at her dog, Sadie, a golden lab, and Shilo can sense him reach down to pet her.

"Don't touch my dog!" she snaps. "Please, the theatre, which one?"

She looks straight ahead as the tall gangly teenager gives her directions, then smiles and nods her gratitude, making her way in to find a seat.

Liz pulls her hand to where she can read the fashionable silver watch that rests there. "Why, it's four thirty." Her smile is kind as she glances at the man beside her. "The marathon starts in, uh, fifteen minutes." Nodding as though to say 'Yes, yes, that's right, I'm right,' she swivels her head to peer at the other man in the hoodie. So many men are out today. . .

Realizing that her question had gone unanswered, Liz narrows her eyes sufficiently. A writer never enjoys being ignored. It's possibly the worst insult, just like with actors. The two go hand in hand. Being irked, she automatically accepts Thomas' offer to buy the next round. Lightening up, she downs her martini, standing up and wandering to cinema seven.

Selecting a seat that is comfortably in the back, where she can see the screen without craning her head. Liz smiles to herself and props her feet on the back of the seat in front of her, lounging and waiting for the marathon to begin.

Her head falls delicately onto her shoulder, staring at the screen as commercials flip across it with music in the background. Sometimes it's bouncy, sometimes it's slow. In any case, they repeat themselves in some form of a chain. And soon, Liz finds herself humming the tunes quietly.

Shilo waits at the door of the theatre, for the usher to help her find her seat.

"Something by the aisle, please" she tells him, waiting patiently for overly eager movie attendees to brush past her. The air is filled with the smell of buttered popcorn, and the crowd hums over the slurping sounds of drink cups. A group of teenagers bellow in laughter, and a man blows his nose shortly after.

Shilo grimaces. Was this a sign of things to come? She hates to not hear the movie when teenagers talk in the middle of the film for whatever frivolous need. The nose blower would also be getting annoying fast.

She follows Sadie's direction as the usher helps her to her seat, and she grimaces as she sits down, realizing there is an overly fat man to be sitting next to her, who's girth spills over his seat. She sits, annoyed, shoving with her elbow at his fat arm, and commands Sadie to sit next to her.

Mark sits down with the bottle of Beck's he managed to swipe when the bartender was'nt looking. Cracking the top off with his lighter he leans back and watches the images of dancing soda cups, and popcorn fireworks. "I had better close my eyes to avoid the subliminal messages, or I may have to get some of that popcorn." Mark shifts back in his seat, and tries to get comfortable. "I hope that girl didn't think I was trying to blow her off, but when you gotta go you gotta go". Mark peeks back at the crowd and thinks he sees a glare off of something in Thomas's Lap close behind him. "That Bugger is taping the show."... Mark laughs to himself not only because of the guy taping the films, but because he's not even British, and he's picked up some of the more colorful terms already.

Sighing impatiently, Liz's arms cross over her low-cut top. She glares at the screen, glancing wistfully at the purse in her lap, which also holds her mp3. Her favorite asset, almost. Smiling at the sudden thought, she glances over at Thomas, coming to the realization with a sharp jolt that he's taping the show. "The things people do, especially ones I just shared drinks with," She grimaces in mild disgust.

Shilo sits in her seat, crossing her legs at the knees, and tries to forget the fat man's massive arm spilling over her armrest. The trailers are rolling, and she loses herself in the spectacular sound of the theatre. In between loud eruptions of sound is the thick black of the screen as it switches advertisements, and the moments of silence dispell the rustle of popcorn bags.

Sadie lays at her feet, and whines softly during a quiet moment. The man next to her scoffs rudely at her then, and Shilo sets her jaw and stares ahead, unwilling to allow him the satisfaction of knowing he's bothering her. "Ssshh, Sadie" she whispers quietly, and bends to feel her. Perhaps someone stepped on her tail, as she's had to lay in the aisle again.

Shilo pulls her drink out of it's cupholder and rests back in her chair. This should be good...a triple feature no less! Delilah will wonder where I've been all day. Good. That bitch has been getting on my nerves anyway. Serves her right.

The lights dim with an air of finality. An ambulance siren can be heard - the sound trailing in through the corridor that looped behind the theatre toward the front. Then another. Then the doors are closed and sound abruptly cut off. The floor trembles. The movie begins.

Sadie whines again as the floor trembles, and Shilo furrows her brow in frustration.

"Can you control your dog please?" asks the fat man beside her. Shilo turns to him and stares, saying nothing for an uncomfortable minute.

"What?" she asks in a voice dripping with bottled tension, feigning oblivion. Damn asshole. He turns away from her, shrugging off his original complaint, and reverts his attention to the movie and his extra large popcorn and slurpy. Figures.

A man walks in front of her then, sidestepping Sadie, and takes the seat in front of her, and Shilo uncrosses and crosses her legs again. Her foot sticks out into the aisle, and she hears Sadie's tail thump as the man walks past.

She leans forward in her seat. "I wouldn't sit there.." she says in a gravelly, menacing voice.

SNACK BAR:
The snack bar staff give Thomas that dedicated smile as he comes up. He can hear the sound of a fire truck rushing past, sirens blaring, followed by the sound of police. Thankfully, they pass by. The bartender had come over to help man the snack bar, making a grand total of two staff members to serve him.

An obese man lies curled up around the toilet bowl, his mouth still leaking the vomit and blood that has created a halo around his head. The vomit has a foamy quality to it and his hand clutches a small bottle of pills. Written in texta on the cubicle wall are the words: ONLY A FEW MINUTES LEFT TO DIE A NORMAL DEATH. Shilo grumbles under her breath at the fat man sitting next to her. He was overly large, and sweaty to boot, and his meaty forearm was touching hers in a way that made her cringe with disdain. If only these damn seats were bigger!

"I know Shauna, I know. He's an ass, but settle down!" Shilo talks to herself under her breath.

As the movie starts, she feels a sense of relief and tries to settle comfortably into her seat, but Sadie begins to whine repeatedly. The fat man looks at her again and grumbles under his breath, and she grits her teeth. Not that she needs to appease him, but perhaps Sadie needed to go out. She stands, cursing, and gathers her things.

"Sadie, forward" she says, annoyed, and the two make their way out of the theatre, down the hallway, and into the main foyer.

Along the way, Shilo begins to talk to herself in a hushed tone. "Shauna, you can't just march in there and yell at him! Because you can't! Because you'll look rude....yes but...."

The slender, blonde bartender lazily cocks an eyebrow and regards him with pale blue eyes. "Yeah, yeah, sure. Want to do me a favor and take this one?" She reaches under the counter and passes him a towel. "Just put it over the mess. Poor cleaners. Glad it's not my job. I don't want to have to pay my way through high school cleaning up whatever's in there." Her eyes flicker. "I mean, through college." She does look rather young to be working at a bar.

Shilo is interrupted by one of the candy bar ladies coming over. It's Janet, having retired from the ticket booth with nothing to do. "Come now dear, the toilets aren't that way. They're this way."

Shaking her head yet once again, Liz mutters, "Sure are a lot of discontented people here." After another moment, she decides to find out what's going on, for journalistic purposes, of course. Standing and pushing through other watchers, she exits the cinema and wanders blindly to the lobby. Instantly, she points out familiar faces. "Hmm, very strange. Only the ones I recognize." With a shrug, the brunette makes her way to the bar and orders another peach martini.

"So.. Let me get this straight... You want me to go clean up the guys puke in your movie theater?" Mark asks in as nice a way as he can. "I really don't think that's part of the admission price on my ticket." Mark hands the towel back to the bartender. "Maybe the kid workin the snackbar can handle it... I've got the rest of a zombie movie marathon to catch." Mark tips his imagineary hat to the bartender and starts to walk back to his seat.

Shilo grumbles under her breath at Janet, but knows the assuming woman well enough to know it is better not to fight her. After all, Janet witnessing Sadie outside would blow her cover entirely. She wasn't really blind after all. And Sadie was no seeing eye dog. She was merely well trained.

Shilo allows the woman to redirect her. "Uh....er....I must have been.....misdirected......" she stammers her excuse. Damn idiot woman! She follows the woman's lead to the washroom, thanking her, and opens the door.

The female washroom smells sharply of disinfectant. Other than that, it is entirely normal.

Shilo enters, waiting impatiently for Janet to leave, and takes a moment to cup her hands under the sink. She offers it to Sadie to drink, then dries her hands and faces the mirror. She sighs and stares for a moment. I can't believe I'm missing the show to stand in the damn bathroom! Stupid dog! Hopefully that will do her for now.... Shilo looks at Sadie then, "Be a good girl, Sadie. Be quiet!" She's not concerned with looking strange, standing in the bathroom, talking to a dog. Matter of fact, this was probably the most normal moment she'd had in a long time.

A moment later, she emerges, checking out of the corner of her eye for Janet. She notices a woman and man standing at the bar when she peeks out of the corner of her eye. Lushes....haven't they got better things to do than stand there and get drunk? After all, they just paid for a movie....surely they'd want to see the show?! She makes her way back to the theatre again, pulling open the doors that have now been closed. The movie has begun already, so it's quite dark. She finds the usher again, to ask for assistance. "Will you help me find an aisle seat?" she asks. "Preferably one without a fat man sitting next to me," she adds sarcastically.

The large fat man is now srawled out in his seat overflowing into what was her seat with a shitty little grin on his face Feel a little anoyed with that fat mans grin Thomas walks down the isle he is setting in forceing him to move his fat ass so he can pass
As he's nearly past the fat man Thomas laptop case swings around spilling the fat mans drink all over his left arm and the now empty chair. Smriking Thomas politely says sorry and turns to walk off...towrds the exit hoping to find a seat the so he can finaly relax

Shilo walks down the aisle with the usher, moving slowly with Sadie next to her, and sits where the usher shows her. She thanks him, commanding Sadie to lay down, and puts her cup in the drink holder in front of her. Just as she does, she hears a commotion in front of her. Thankfully, the usher has led her to a seat well behind the fat man, and someone has just beaned him in the head with their laptop, spilling his drink on him. Laughing, she watches the fat man curse and riggle under the cold drink and ice cubes, and she has a hard time stifling her grin. Serves the bugger right! She tries hard to look like she hasn't seen, after all, she's blind today. But still, the situation was terribly amusing.

Shaun, the star, is sitting at a table with his four friends, and Shilo loses herself in the film before long. "Can I get....any of you cunts.....a drink?" says Ed, the large, abrasive friend of Shaun, and Shilo forgets all about her troubles as she laughs at the movie.

The movie is in full swing now, and Shilo has been laughing at how clueless Shaun is. He pays for his things at the convenience store, then leaves and crosses the street in the middle, cutting across the lanes of traffic without care. He drinks his slurpy, and the camera shows the street behind, with zombies trailing behind him. Shaun is ever oblivious to the people stalking him, mind only on his slurpy and his girfriend. Shilo laughs out loud, lost in the hilarity.

Shilo crosses her legs and gets comfortable, looking forward to some time to relax. Delilah's not here to psychoanalyze me, so I can forget about everything for now. She grins at the movie, clearly amused.

Elizabeth nods, never being one for holding martinis. She begins to feel lightheaded, the famed result of drinking on an empty stomach. Hearing sirens and seeing her new companion get up and walk to the window, she follows. The drink is still in hand, cupped gracefully in her fingers. As they entwine around the stem, just under the cone-like top, she wonders aloud, "I wonder what's going on that has them so busy?" Another sip of the peach, half-closing her eyes in a sort of daze.

The road is filled with so many cars they spill out over the sidewalks. A crowd of people surge past the mostly halted vehicles, clambering over boots and bonnets. A large SUV attempts to leave the hospital car park the only way it can - by ramming one of the cars on the road and taking its space. Unfortunately, from there on there is nowhere to move. A few people rush out from nearby shops and start grabbing things from their cars. A mother with a stroller tries to calm her baby, not twenty feet from the cinema.

The world outside grows dimmer as though a heavy cloud cover were crossing over the sun. However, the sky above is blue and littered with a few white, fluffy clouds. Then again, the sun is not quite in view due to the large Furniture Warehouse to the left of the cinema.

The bartender does so. Immediately a sharp explosion of static fills the screen. Beneath the static, a bleeding news reporter stands in a darkened room, advancing on the camera. He pleads for help as blood trickles down his scalp. Things move in the back of the room, small mishappen shapes that can barely be seen. The anchorman reaches the camera and grips its sides, mouthing something that cannot be discerned. Then the channel goes to the picture it uses when there is no longer a working signal.

The bartender gasps. "What the hell was that? A new horror movie? That's the best bit of viral advertising I've ever seen."

Thomas finds no payphone in the lobby although he does see the images on the television set. If he wants to check his voicemail, he'll need to use something else.

Things have begun to get strange in the movie, and eery music starts to play in the background. The news is broadcasting on every channel, as Shaun flips through the channels at work. On the bus home, he sits next to a very pale woman who appears to be sleeping, but Shilo can tell she is not. Comatose, more likely, and morphing into a zombie. Shaun passes an accident when he gets off the bus, and you see a man sitting in his car, head forward on the steering wheel, passed out or perhaps worse. Shaun is beginning to suspect something's up.

Shilo loves this movie. She slurps her drink and grins, thinking of her favorite parts and looking forward to them. She is oblivious to the world around her, and more than happy to be that way. I deserve a break. Damn hospital's been driving me loopy.

His laptop fails to connect to the Internet.

The bartender obediently switches to a different channel.

Two anchormen sit side by side. One has his head on the table. "...chemical attack in the heart of London. Clouds of the black radiation are sweeping across the suburbs of London. Stay in your homes. I repeat, stay in your homes. Do not attempt to leave London. The roads are congested and road blocks are miles long."

The one with his head one the table murmurs: "I'a I'a Cthulhu."

Lizzie had been staring at the television in pure bewilderment. Shaking her head and still dumbfounded when Mark takes her hand, the poor girl is drug along for the run. Finally when her brain starts working again and her legs remember their use, she's walking comfortably alongside him. Her strides continue to lengthen.

Extending slender legs covered in a black leather boot, her heels continue to make that click clack sound on the carpet, though muffled. She gives a little cry as she presses the towel to her nose and mouth, instinctively inhaling and breathing in water particles instead. A small sneeze sees to the end of the sharp sting and her eyes, enchantingly blue, adopted a haunted, hunted look. "What's going on?"

She stands nearby, right behind him and against the wall. Her fingers drum nervously, one cupping the towel to her mouth, and the other against her martini glass. Removing the wet cloth, peeling it from her face, Liz downs the rest of the liquid, flinching at the cold. Now that the container is empty, she sets it down on the carpet, the bowl up.

Her now-free hand reaches up to her forehead and sweeps the ringlets back behind her ears. Sighing and at a loss of what to do, Elizabeth fidgets with her purse. Maybe the music. . . No, not yet, better wait till we stop. I need to be able to listen. Her thoughts are privately in consideration of her predicament, but unfortunately she doesn't have much hold on her expressions. If Mark were looking in her eyes, at the furrow in her brow, the tight set of her lips, he'd be able to discern exactly what she is thinking.

Back in the theatre, Ed and Shaun have had about all they can drink at the pub, the Winchester. The evening continues to get stranger as they sit, drunkenly laughing, and notice a gun above the bar. They laugh at it then, with suspenseful music undertoning the laughter, when the camera moves to reveal the doorway, with figure outside, approaching. The figure gets to the door and begins to thump on the glass, once, twice, three times.

Shilo sits in her seat, laughing at the movie. Why does a good horror make me laugh? Well, truly, Shaun of the Dead was not technically a horror, but creepy in moments, nevertheless.

The lights flicker inside the lobby and it becomes somewhat colder. Even those in the cinema can tell the sudden drop in temperature, although it is likely assumed to be the air conditioner. The dozen or so patrons continue to watch the movie, secure in the knowledge that London was safe, and that everything outside would remain as it was when they left.

Meanwhile, the supply closet door opens easily. It had never been locked. It also was a store room and not a supply closet like it was stated on the door. Inside is a series of piled-up chairs, of old tickets, of boxes of junk kept at the ready in case anyone ever needed them, but left in this room because of reasonable certainty that no one ever would.

OOC: I'll leave it to you what you find. Just be logical about it or I'll confiscate your findings.

Mark digs through the box of junk. He finds a boxcutter, some Duct tape, and a Carpenter's Hammer. He grabs the tape and the box cutter, and sticks the hammer in his backpack. Just as he is finishing up the others from the bar show up with the plastic wrap.

Janet and the candy bar workers aren't here. Only the bartender ventured over. There are three cinemas and each one contains a small audience, although considering the marathon they were watching only had a few dozen people, there wouldn't be very many people to gather. "Enough of this," snarls Janet, the lights flickering above casting deep, frightening shadows beneath her eyes. Something seems to crawl there. Maggots within the shadows that weren't seen, rather felt, and then they were gone. "I am tired of this. If you don't leave now, I'll have you escorted out."

A few of the other staff members came to her aid, looking perplexed and a little frightened. The audience in the theatre twist in their seats to see the display. Members of the first warned audience haven't left their theatre.

Shilo has been watching the banter like an observer of a ping pong match. She uncertainly gathers her purse and drink cup, and starts walking slowly, looking at Janet strangely like she has suddenly sprouted five heads. She follows Mark out, keeping her blind act in tact by putting one hand on his shoulder until she finds Sadie's leash.

"Please drop my dog's lead," she says, "She's my only eyes, after all..."

The movie is still underway, and Shilo feels a twinge of regret that she'll miss Ed and Shaun sitting out on the lawn, box of old records in front of them, searching through them to choose the ones they'll sling at the zombie's heads. I love that scene! But this man seemed like he truly thought there was danger. Or is he just a nutjob? Who could tell? All Shilo knows is, there's something very strange going on, and Janet's got to be somehow involved.

At this angle, coming out of the theatre and into the lobby, the two can see part of the glass front. There is a darkness outside thick enough to block out all of the lights in London. "And so, what's this about a chemical attack?" Shilo begins, feeling uncertain that this strange man she doesn't know has come into the theatre, hell bent on pulling her away from her movie. I must be crazy....what in the hell is going on? Shilo pinches herself, winces, and continues to follow Mark.

She sees the darkness through the glass, and assumes the jig will be up soon anyway. She pulls off her glasses to see better. Upon doing so, she realizes she's not actually seeing things.

"Holy mother of god, what in the hell is that??!!" She looks at Mark, startled, and with an expression of disbelief. Then she quickly realizes she's just shared her secret with him. Mark laughs at the young ladies trickiness. "Not entirely sure... Something on the news about a cloud downtown." They make it to the supply room, and Mark shuts the door behind himself and their new companions. He locks the door, and seals the edges with the duct tape. He then tapes a layer of plastic wrap over frame, and tapes it down. He then Covers the vent in an extra thick sheet of plastic, and seals it off with Tape. He takes time now to search the room more thorughly, and finds a 20ft Extension chord, a crochet mallet in the corner, and an old portable am/fm radio with no batteries.

"Right. Well. Uh...I see we're all locked in this tiny room......heh heh...." She laughs nervously, and appears to not know where to start. What the hell!

Mark Rips the doo open tearing his seals to pieces, and pulls her in quickly slamming the door shut behind her. "Everyone help me reseal this door!"

Without questioning, Liz helps him reseal it, not having yet glanced at the 'blind girl'. When it's done, she steps backward in anxious retreat.

The bartender goes to sit on some boxes, leaving the seals to the four. She takes a tin out of her pocket and starts rolling a cigarette that doesn't smell quite like a cigarette. "My boss is going to fire my ass," she says, irritated, shaking her head and gazing up at the ceiling. "There's no chemical attack and if they were, d'you really think sticky taping a door would do anything?"

"That's pretty much what I said when they told us to do this on the news a few years ago, but It's got to be better than nothing." Marks says as he motions for the Bartender to pass her joint.

The bartender sighs and runs her hands through her hair. She then passes it over. "I still think you're mad." She rises and goes to the window to peer out into the darkness. "Still, this place should be safe..." She runs her fingers across the window sill, painted as it were, with the odd black lettering that encircled each of the windows here. She then presses her hand to the glass and peers over her shoulder at them. "It's so cold out there. So cold. There should be something we can do."

"Could this really be all of London? Could this really be ... it?"

"I wouldn't mind either, if you don't....", Shilo says to Beckie, and holds her hand out to Mark, who is busy toking away on the joint. She waits expectantly for him to pass it.
She looks at the bartender speculatively, then says, "What in the hell is going on? A moment ago it was beautiful sunshine. It's pitch black out there now!"

She looks around the room nervously, then adresses Liz and Mark, standing side by side, "What was on the news anyways? What did they tell you?"

The bartender mournfully finishes rolling her joint, tapping out a little bit of tobacco from a halved cigarette kept in her tin, and tucks the joint behind her ear, leaning against the wall. "I'm Beckie, by the way."

"Hi Beckie I'm Mark. Did you happen to bring anything with you from the bar or snack area?" He says smiling. He walks over to the window and wipes the thick frost that is forming away, and Looks deeply into the darkness looking for anything he can see.

Shilo raises an eyebrow at Thomas, fiddling around with his laptop. "Well aren't you a sharp one." She says it in a way that you wonder if she's being sarcastic, or simply stating an observation.

"So, I wonder if we can rig up a light source in here. Anyone see any candles? I assume Beckie has a light," she thumbs at Beckie, smirking that the bartender remembered her weed, but not any drinks. What a nutbar...
Sadie whines a bit and Shilo stoops to shush her, petting her head and around her collar. "It's alright sweetie, you're fine."

She straightens again, offers the joint out to Thomas, then looks around at the others, sighing deeply. "Well, as long as we're all here then, I'd best introduce myself. I'm Shilo. And this is Sadie", she motions to her dog. She leans her back against the wall and slides down to a sitting position on the floor. "And....well.....thanks, for the hand out that is..." she eyes Mark and nods in his general direction. You'd wonder why she appeared so uncomfortable about saying it, but Shilo has never been good at pleasantries.

So shilo I assumed that was you seeing eye dog but you seem to have noticed that it has gotten darker in here was i wrong to asume you are blind?

Thomas rdy his laptop when he turns it on it casts erie shadows all around the room. He quickly grabs a spare usb cable out of his laptopcase and the the knife off his belt. He strips cuts one end off the usb cable and strip about a 6inchs of the sheath off and begains to seperte the four wires inside. He needs the red and green wires for the radio.

Does anyone have a lighter i can use to strip the steath off these little wires?

Other than mobile phones, lights and match boxes, no one in the room has a torch. Beckie does manage to procure one, while breathing deeply of her joint, but the torch has a broken light globe and dead batteries.

"I have a lighter in my backpack" Mark says as he unzips his pack and opens the smaller zippered bag inside it.

Thomas takes the lighter from mark and finshes up the wire stripping. All finished he grabs the radio and begins to attach the usb wire to the radios positive and negitve battery leads.. The light come with a static hiss. Smiling Thomas turns the tuner dial hoping to tune in anything...

"Don't blow my cover," Shilo says to Thomas in response. Her glasses are off now, and Sadie is leisurely stretched out on the floor, and thumps her tail when her name is spoken in the conversation, looking about the room with a wandering eye at the others. "Ya, it's all a show for the good service. I pose as a blind person when I'm not at the hospital. My psychologist doesn't know, so don't tell her." She begins to look out the window, peering out as though she's certain Delilah's out on the other side of the window, looking for her. "And don't tell anyone else here, for that matter." She looks warily at Beckie then. "Can you keep a secret?"

She watches Thomas fiddle with the laptop, admiring his handy work. At least someone's got a plan. Taping up the door, and rigging up a lap top? I'd be sunk. "Do this for a living, do you? So what business do you have in London? You didn't come up here to rig up a chemical bomb did you?" She says this with a laugh, but then her face returns to a serious expression far too quickly for you to truly believe she's joking. She stares at Thomas intensely.

The radio crackles with static for a few good, long seconds as they search for a radio station. Finally, there is a loud burst of static but no matter how much they try to turn the radio down, or change stations, they can hear it. Rising out of the crackle comes a male voice. "Yes, of cour ... te ... to the children ... do what I can here ... now..."

"Nah, no watch here, but it has to have been 20 minutes now...." Shilo looks up and to the right as though speculating her answer to Mark's query.

She adjusts her position on the floor, wincing as she moves. I could be eating my popcorn right now....watching the zombies..... Thomas comes to sit down on the floor next to her, and she moves over a bit, allowing him room. She looks at him distantly. "So you're not a bomber huh? No surprise. I didn't really have you pegged as one. What's easy money for you then? And I think you can throw the 'good time' away..." she continues, gesturing to their cramped quarters.

She responds to Mark's comment then, "Donner party? Nah, I'm not much into dusters. Why? Did you see the movie?" She starts to rifle through her purse, trying to squint in the low light. Time for my medication. Where did I put it?

She rifles through it for a while, picking things up and peering at them in the low light, then replacing them. Finally she empties the entire contents of her purse on the floor, and starts pawing through the contents. Scissors, wallet, lipstick, mirror, face powder, cell phone, checkbook, where the hell is it???

She sighs, giving up. Must have forgotten them back at the hospital. Damn it! "So I'm surprised you guys didn't get to the flick after paying for it....aren't you a fan of Shaun of the Dead?" She looks up, grinning. "There's some funny scenes in that show..." She shakes her head all of a sudden, her neck flicking bizarrely, then returns to normal. "It was just getting good when all this started...."

Thomas says to shilo "Easy money well thats complicted lets just say i do odd jobs that other people dont know how to do or dont want a any part of" Thomas stands and adresses the room.Well if its radiation I really think we would be dead by now and last time I checked radiation puts off heat Whatever this is it seems to drop the temputre jugding by the frost on the glass We've been in here only 25 minutes or so and I think we should maybe think about getting out of here and to do that we've got to know whats on the other side of that door. I've got my digital camcorder on me I was thing about tieing it to the that extension cord and sliding it into the hallway facing the looby windows and letting it set there for a bit. We would have to open the door thou we could close back again after the cam is out we got enough glad wrap to seal that door a few more times and after the cams been out there for I dont know maybe 20 min or so then we reel it back in and check it out. So what do u think..?

"Well, that depends. What's with that radio? There's no children here....so where do you think that signal is coming from?"

"I have a watch. And I also have four double A batteries. My digital camera takes that many." She looks at Mark, quirking an eyebrow. "Donner party? Can't say I have." Sighing and shaking her head a moment, Liz reaches into her purse and draws out an mp3 and headphones. Setting one of them comfortably in her right ear, she looks around, flipping it on. As she waits for it to load, and then for her song list to begin, she hears Thomas.

"You're crazy. Whatever's out there could very well get in here if we open the door at all." Liz's voice is adamant, clearly she believes strongly about this. "Nice to meet you, Shilo, Mark, and Thomas. My name's Elizabeth Smith." She shakes her head again and then adds almost hastily. "Liz, more commonly. That or Lizzie. I hate my name."

Thomas standing there nods his head in agreement with shilo. I think we might be able to pick up something else up on the radio but not in this room that radios old its gonna need to be out in the open to get any sort of good reception. Ok ok mark almost all raditation gives off heat but more importently glad wrap does'nt stop radition but it would keep out a airborn chemical or biological weapon. And liz how logn do u want to stay in here with no food or drink. We have to consider going outside this room or would u prefer to just go ahead and die in here.

Shilo cocks her head and adresses Liz alone now. "Liz? Well, nice to meet you. Too bad under such circumstances, that is."

She looks over at Mark, with his ear to the door. "You wanna know what's going on out there? I'll go. I need a drink of water anyways. 'Sides, I think this is all a farce. You sure that was the news you were watching? Not a recording, or a spoof?" Shilo is doubtful by nature, that's just her way. She's never been easily convinced. She turns to Thomas. "You wanna go for a walk?"

She inclines her head stiffly, addressing Thomas. "I can go for days without eating. I practice the skill often, which would explain my size." Getting over her offense in a couple minutes, she nods to Shilo silently, listening to her music. A bouncy song plays without lyrics, bringing a ghostly smile to her lips as she takes in the techno.

Shilo shrugs her indifference. "We can all survive days without food....it's water we need." She looks at Liz, who is ignoring her with her music at the moment. "You can seal up the door right after we leave. We should look for a weapon in here, though. Just in case...."

She regards Mark with renewed interest. "Didn't you find a croquet mallet?"

"Well I haven't seen any glowing green clouds pushing through the vent yet. Except for the one from that hooter you rolled Beckie." Mark says laughing. "Ok go ahead and let's peak outside at least. Help me peel back this tape so we can put it back on in an exercise of total futility if there's a cloud outside that door." Mark finishes securing the tape, wraps his mostly dry towel back around his face. He twists the handle and the loud tumblers click as the latch is released. He opens the door just a crack, and peers out into the hallway.

Shilo jumps to her feet, enjoying the stretch. "C'mon Sadie" she says, tugging on Sadie's leash. Sadie jumps to her feet as well, and shakes back and forth, releasing a spray of fine hair over the room.

Shilo giggles inwardly. I can't wait to get out of this tiny cramped room! Claustrophobic...I always knew Delilah went on and on about it with me...but really, I thought she was mad.

"You still coming?" she asks Thomas.

He also wraps his moist but almost dry towl around his nose and mouth as well. Thomas turns on the cam and hits record and walks over to the door mark has crack open. He neals down and grabs the cam and shoves it the the opening in the door as hard as he can hoping it slides enought to see the bar area. Holding on to the other end of the extension cord mark steps back from the open door as quickly as he can.

Realizing she'd ignored Shilo, Liz murmurs. "Indeed, circumstances could be better." Then as the door's being opened, she edges back, not that eager anymore. Being locked out the first time sates her desire for finding out. But still, the towel resting on her showing collarbones is lifted and held to her nose and mouth. Blue eyes half-close and she leans against a shelf, watching.

Shilo rolls her eyes as she sees the gang put their towels around their mouth. "D'you really think you all need those?" she says incredulously, finding it hard to believe they're all convinced it's necessary to hide in a closet. "I mean....c'mon...."
She shakes her head and tries to remember her tolerance coaching. "Well, I'm gonna brave it without the towel. I dunno what that's all about, really. C'mon Thomas...let's get crackin....I can't wait to see what's out there..."
Shilo has always been up for a good adventure. I mean really what fun is it to hide in a closet when there could be fun awaiting? She thinks of the zombies in Shaun of the Dead, and makes swooshing movements, flipping them the imaginary croquet mallet to their head. Bring it on!

Before Mark closes the door, she turns back to him. "Gimme that croquet mallet, I have a feeling I might need it." She holds her hand out expectantly. "And you two!" She points at Mark and Liz then, "No neckin' in here, eh? I know she's drunk, but paws off." She laughs as she takes the croquet mallet and Mark closes the door.

Shilo puts her glasses back on, to hide her eyes from Janet, who she sees often. The croquet mallet is hidden up the sleeve of her hoodie, holding onto the ball of it and concealing it within the fabric folds. She holds onto Sadie's lead with the other and walks down the hallway to the lobby. She stands close to Thomas, so that she can whisper without having to blow her cover with Janet. "That's odd," she says, furrowing her brow, "It looks all the same..." She ignores Janet altogether when she speaks, still unsure of why she was so adamant that Shilo not leave the theatre.

Thomas plugs the radio in, and Shilo's face turns horrified at the message. She turns to the otherthree then, "This is crazy!" She looks from one to the next incredulously. Shilo eyes the outside doors nervously. She replies to Thomas,"Well, alright then, I could come with you...." She grips the ball of the croquet mallet tightly, and smiles slowly, as though she's thinking of a fond memory. Flicking her neck nervously to the side, she looks as though there might be a bee attacking her and she's trying to get away. Perhaps they haven't noticed. "Make that two" she says to Janet. "Beer, water and sandwich that is."

She walks over to the radio and whispers to Thomas. "Yes well, I'm starting to believe you now about the news channel. But I'm still thinking its a big joke on all of us. Besides, it was a movie marathon of horror shows. Is it starting to play with our heads?" Shilo is used to wondering if she's crazy, but perhaps Thomas hasn't had any practice at it. She pull out the scissors from her purse and opens them, then gestures how you could stab someone easily with them if need be. Do I sound crazy now? No, that's okay right? You might need to stab....nah I really sound crazy. Shilo gets a strange, far away look in her eyes, then stares at Thomas like she's looking right through him. Like he's not even there, in front of her.

She snaps her head, shaking like a wet dog, then looks at him again. "Uh...er......sorry...." She looks over at Janet and continues, "Don't bother Janet, I've got my own cash." She looks at Thomas up and down, then says, "Like you already said, you don't know me. 'Sides, I got my own change."
"Now about going outside, you wanna eat first or what?"

Lizzie follows the short procession out the door, watching the lobby anxiously. Mark disappears to the movie, Shilo and Thomas are at the bar. . . And she's alone. Shrugging reassuringly, she hugs her shoulders, drowning in the music that floods her ears. Eventually, she's staggering all the slightly towards the cinema, where she can lose herself in the movie's farthest seats from the stage.

When she's engulfed once more, Liz curls up in her seat, burrowing her delicate face into her folded arms and crying quietly. Not a sound escapes her as she allows unknown reactions to bubble to the surface of her being.

She looks him up and down again, leaning on the counter behind her and taking a step back. "What kind of business do you do anyways? What in the hell do you have a gun in your trunk for?"

Shaking it off, she continues, "Well, no matter. It'll come in handy. As long as.....oh never mind." Shilo shakes her head and blinks hard for a minute, as though she might have something in her eye, perhaps.

Thomas looks at Shilo and Sharply says "Its for my protection you mind lowering your voice. You know you can stay here if it bothers you that much . London, New York, Cario it all the same I got a dozen different permits from a dozen differnt countiers to carry a gun either on me or in my belongings, I do work for the kinda of people who require I keep there information safe at all times and under any circumstances. It just so happens that normally involes some sort of government agency and for that matter government kickbacks. I'd make twice what

"Shauna no!" Shilo looks at the floor, cocking her head to the side as she talks to herself. "Stay put....don't come out! Shauna! I mean it!"

A moment later she addresses Thomas as the situation hadn't arose. "It's no skin off my nose buddy, just askin' is all. Keep your pants on alright?" She looks over her shoulder at Janet, who is busy attending to the sandwiches and pulling the bottled water out of the cooler. Janet looks over nervously, but says nothing, so Shilo continues, grabbing her glass of beer from the side of the bar, where Janet left them, "I want to go out there as bad as you do. You aren't leavin' me behind. Sorry I spoke so loud."Shilo thumbs in the direction of Janet, "Not that I think she even heard me, that is."

Mark sits in the corner of the theatre feelin like the butt of some big joke. "So this whole thing was what? Some isolated incident, a joke, maybe it was a diversion..." He thinks. "I hate this theatre... maybe I should make a diversion of my own." He gets out of his seat and walks back out of the theatre making sure not to draw Janet's attention, or anyone else's for that matter, and enters the storage room again. Opening his backpack he gets out his screwedriver and takes off the vent. It's not nearly big enough for him to climb into, but it is wide enough for him to feel in as far as he can with his arm. He reaches up and feels that it connects to a vent leading towards the lobby. He takes out one of his smokebombs, Lights it, and Hurls it down the ventillation shaft towards the Lobby. He then puts away his lighter and screwdriver, and slips out of the room as quietly, and hopefully unnoticed. "If this works I won't have to worry about the rent this month." He thinks as he makes his way towards the snackbar.

Thomas drains all of his beer in a few quick guilps. He looks at shilo and says no problem I did'nt mean to be rude but between what I seen on the t.v and what I 've hread on that radio I am riding a on nothing but nerves. Thomas suddely stops what he saying and walks over to the tv and turns it on and begains tuning the channels just to see if its picking up anything after all it been what 30-45 minutes since they had seen the last t.v broadcast

Shilo watches Mark return to the lobby and leans close to Thomas so that he can hear her. "Your friend is back" she states simply. "Think he'll want to go for a little jaunt outside? " she asks him, taking a big swallow of beer.

She watches Mark approach from behind her thick sunglasses, glad she chose the extra dark kind so that no one could see her wandering glances. She stands next to Thomas, who is flipping through the channels on the tv as Mark walks up.

"So? What did you two find? And where's Liz, then?" She looks behind him, around his side, expecting to see her come walking up. "Right. So Thomas and I are taking a little walk outside. Are you in?"

"I think I'm going to hangout in here, for a bit. I still am not in a big hurry to go outside after that news report." Mark says as he sits down at the bar. "Sorry about all that earlier. If you had seen that newscast...Have they announced anything else yet?"

"Do.....do you guys (sniff sniff) smell something? Like, smoke?" Shilo gets a far away look on her face like she's somewhere else. She starts to sweat, she begins to bite her lip, and beads of moisture become visible on her upper lip and forehead. "Wh..what's burning? I hate fire....I..I...I can't stay here!" She looks at Mark and Thomas wildly, gripping the mallet with white knuckles emerging from her hoodie sleeve. "What is it.... what is that....." She looks wildly around the room, panicked. "I..I need to go..."

She begins to walk to the front door, and Sadie follows behind her.

Shilo takes a few steps, then turns back to Mark and Thomas. "C'mon let's go!" she says with panic in her voice. "Thomas....your car? Are you coming still? I..I just....." Shilo looks back at the air vent again. "I just...can't stay in here.....please!" Her voice is full of terror, and it shakes when she says it. She bites her lip nervously and pauses, with Sadie sitting down right behind her. Sadie looks up at her with a concerned look, then looks back at Thomas and Mark for a moment. She lets out a tiny whine, softly, like she's worried about Shilo. Shilo barely notices, still focussing on her fear of being caught in a fire, trapped and fighting to stay alive. She stands in front of you, nervous, panicked and trembling.

Elizabeth is walking back down the hall, wiping her eyes and making sure there's no redness. Her compact mirror is held in her hands, as she observes. But, stepping into the lobby and immediately inhaling a lungful of smoke, she breaks into a hacking fit. Coughing and spluttering in an attempt to clear her air passageways, Liz peers at Shilo, Thomas, and Mark.

Without a second thought, she's racing to them, blinking rapidly to stem tears of cleansing. Despite her careful tending a few moments ago to see no irritation, they are reddening. The new color contrasts sharply with the wonderful blueness of her irises. Gently sloping nose wrinkles in another upheaval of phlegm. She had just heard Shilo's plea, "I (cough) agree with (cough cough) Shilo! We have to get (cough) out!" Contrary to her former stand on exiting the cinema, she's all for it now.

Shilo gratefully finds accompaniment in Liz, and joins her in her walk towards the door. She takes a moment to swing around on her heel as she walks, then says to Mark and Thomas, "Well, I guess by your silence, you two want to stay in a burning building then? Why are you guys so quiet all of a sudden? You got something to confess?"

She shrugs her indifference then and walks towards the front door. She stops at the door for a moment, hand on the glass, peering out into the darkness. She turns to Liz, "So, what do you have to protect yourself....just in case? I have a mallet," she pauses showing her the mallet that is hidden in the sleeve of her coat, "and some scissors. You have anything of your own?"

The smoke is far less strong nearer the doors. A few of the audience members come out, making nervous enquiries about what is going on, only to notice the darkness outside and become even more fearful. Janet strides before the doors and holds out her hands.

"There's no problem, people, just a false alarm," she says calmly. "Our smoke machine in the store room has been on the blink for awhile - yes, I'm well aware it doesn't smell like normal smoke machine smoke, this one is quite old, hence the problem. Please, do return to your seats. There's a rather rough storm outside. There's nothing to worry about. Please, return to your seats."

"Why are there no lights on outside," murmurs an attractive, middle-class, middle-aged black woman with a mild French accent. "A black out as well?"

She looks at Liz then, and leans in to whisper, "I don't like this one bit. Let's get outta here. I don't give a shit what she says."

Dr. Lionel Carpenter leans back in his seat, eating his popcorn and watching the antics of the Simpsons on the big screen. He chuckles as Homer manages to smash himself with a wrecking ball, uttering his trademark shout of "D'oh!" The ball swings back and forth with Homer plastered to it, alternately ramming him into a huge rock and a pub with a sign reading "A Hard Place." Finally the ball loses momentum and stops in the middle, and then the chain snaps. Homer lands face down on the ground, and the wrecking ball lands on top of him, flattening him.

Sarah would love this movie, he thinks. I miss her laughter. She hasn't laughed once since that night. She's smiled, but those have been forced Marge Simpson smiles designed to hide her pain and sorrow. If she saw this, she wouldn't be able to keep from laughing. Lionel realizes that he hasn't laughed either for some time. It was only by the grace of God and Sarah's determination to survive that he was spared every father's worst nightmare, and that his daughter had not suffered any worse than she did. He wants nothing more than her happiness, though he realizes that she needs time to heal. She killed a man...from what my father told me about his experiences in the war, that always affects one deeply. And she still cared about him even after all the things he put her through. Lyle was lucky I didn't get to him first. I would not have been so merciful.

Lionel pushes his morbid thoughts aside and focuses on enjoying the movie. It's supposed to end shortly before Sarah's shift ends at the hospital, and he plans to surprise her and treat her to dinner in a fine restaurant. Her happiness means everything to him, and perhaps this will cheer her up.

A strange smell tickles Lionel's nostrils, and he sits up straight. None of the other patrons in the darkened theater seem to have noticed it. "Is that...smoke?" he wonders aloud. "It's coming from the lobby." He puts his popcorn and soda in the cup holders on the sides of his seat and stands up, then walks back towards the lobby doors. I'll miss some of the movie, he thinks, but that's okay. I'll gladly see it again...with Sarah next time.

Lionel pushes open the double doors and steps into the lobby, taking in the commotion and the black smoke billowing out of the vent. "Excuse me," he says. "What's going on?"

Janet gently but firmly repeats her verdict and then adds: "I'm sorry for the irritation. Due to this unfortunate occurence, those that remain will get free drinks and snacks for the duration of the incident."

Several audience members return to the theatres and come back out with more in tow. As a mob, three dozen audience goers converge on the drink and snack bars, renowned for being more pricey than the theatre tickets themselves.

"A blackout?" asks Lionel. "That's absurd. Our lights are still on. The hospital is right across the road, and we should be able to see its lights. They've got a backup generator just in case of a power failure. Otherwise patients on life support would be in dire straits indeed!" Thinking about the hospital reminds him of his daughter. "I'd better check to make sure Sarah's okay." He takes out his mobile phone - which had been set to vibrate out of courtesy to the other movie patrons - and calls her duty station.

Shilo stares at the man who just walked up, and regards the phone like a foreign object for a second. Blinking, she looks at him again from behind her dark glasses. "You won't get a signal," she says to him flatly. "We've already tried that. There is something strange going on. First on the news...these two heard that. " She turns and thumbs towards Thomas and Mark as she says it. "Then on the radio...the reception....it was all crackled and distorted. There's something going on that's bigger than just an ordinary blackout."

She points her finger at Janet then. "This woman is a liar! She's just trying to keep something from all of you. Perhaps we need to find out what that is!"

Mark is glad that Shilo has started up a commotion. He was'nt counting on Janet wanting to keep business in the theatre so badly that she would lie about a fire. Which is exactly what this was as far as she knew. So why does'nt she want anyone to leave? Insurance purposes? No, you aren't the theatre's problem after you leave. He doesn't ponder on it too long. WHat he does do is move himself closer to the cash register at the bar.

"Drinks are half price as well," says Janet, obviously misunderstanding Mark's movement. "I simply wouldn't want you to think badly of this theatre. Many of you have come a fair distance to enjoy our movies. Let's not have a technical difficulty affect us."

"Technical difficulty?" Shilo nearly spits the words, dripping in sarcasm, and scoffs at Janet. "Explain the radio message then!" She looks around at the others milling about, and addresses them all at once, "This is an emergency situation. The tv said something about a chemical attack. We shouldn't just be sitting about, eating popcorn. We have very real danger present."

Shilo is still standing at the door, hand on the handle, scowling at Janet and turns to the man. "Is it ringing? We tried three times and couldn't get a signal."

"It's ringing," Lionel says to Shilo. "My daughter's a nurse, and she works in the hospital. Maybe I can get through because she's right across the street. A chemical attack, you say? What else did you hear on the TV?" He has counted three rings so far, and now the phone rings a fourth time. Come on, pick up, he thinks. "Someone should have picked up the phone by now, though. Something must be wrong." God, please let Sarah be okay. He continues holding the phone to his ear and listening to it ring on the other end as he turns to face Janet."Ma'am, if you want everyone to stay here, perhaps you'd best level with us. What is really going on?"

Shilo looks back at the smoke billowing from the air vent. "Love to stay and chat...but we've a bit of a fire problem on our hands. Do you really believe this baloney about the smoke machine? What would they be doing with a smoke machine in here anyways? I can't remember the last movie I saw that featured smoke as a special effect...I mean 3D glasses, yes. Smoke machine?" She shakes her head.

"I didn't hear the tv personally, it was these two," Shilo points to Thomas and Mark. "I was watching my movie, until they dragged me out of there, screaming about everyone's safety. Perhaps you should go ask them what they heard. I only heard the radio message."

She turns to Liz then. "We can't get out of here quite yet. You need something heavy at least, to throw if need be. We are two women in a dark parking lot after all...."

The ground trembles for a moment and then shakes with a violent force never before experienced by those inside. Each person is knocked flat to the ground and bounced as the floor seems to drop and rise. A loud booming sound can be heard not far from the Cinemaplex, followed by the sound of things being knocked down, and above it all, terribly high above it, is an alien keening, high and monstrous. The booms are timed well with the ground's movement and as the booms, crashes and crunches move away at incredible speeds from the cinemaplex, so too does the keening sound, and so too do the forceful bumps weaken, until the noise crackles like thunder in the distance and only a vague shake catches their attention.

Lionel groans, the impacts with the floor jarring his bones. The only thing similar to this that he has heard of is his father's account of what it was like when he was on furlough in London during the Blitz, but even air raids weren't supposed to cause severe tremors like these. A nuclear weapon might, but then there would have been a blinding flash and they'd in all likelihood have been dead now. The mobile phone goes sliding from his hand, and he crawls after it to recover it once the bouncing stops. "I don't think going outside is such a good idea," he says. He grabs the phone and holds it to his ear to make sure it's still ringing. "Is anyone injured? I'm a doctor."

The phone continues to ring. Several people groan with pain. One woman reels back, whimpering, a bloodied gash upon her forehead from where it connected with the counter. A man utters a piercing shriek, writhing with pain from a glass that had fell and shattered shortly before his face had fallen upon it and bounced. Another man clutches at his wrist and stares with dismay at three broken fingers. Two women had broken noises, another merely a bloodied one.

The counters were a mess of overturned bottles and broken glass. The glass doors have cracked. The smoke has stopped billowing into the room, leaving merely a haze of pale smoke that hangs thickly a foot from the ceiling, appearing much like candy floss.

"If anyone here has medical experience," says Lionel, "I'd value your assistance. We'll need a first aid kit if you've got one here, bandages, cloth or at least napkins to stop the bleeding." He grabs a wad of napkins and hurries over to the man whose face had been lacerated by the glass, as he seemed to need help the most urgently, and tries to stanch the flow of blood. "A sewing kit would be useful too. Some of these people will need stitches. We'll also need to set some broken bones."

Shilo opens her eyes, and finds herself laying flat on her back, with Sadie's hind quarters underneath her. Sadie wriggles, whining in pain, and Shilo abruptly sits up, looking around frightened.

How did I get here? What happened? Who are all these people?? Shilo looks around the room as though in a fog, or a faraway place, and has no recollection of what has happened in the last five minutes, or even this evening at all.

"What's....what's going on??" she asks of whomever will hear her. She shakes her head a bit, furrowing her brow in confusion. She stands, feet shaking and mind whirling. She has no recollection of ever getting to this place.

Taking a swift glance over the room, she turns around and peers out the door, into the darkness. She feels no emotion, no fear, no panic, no normal emotions one might go through during these circumstances. She pushes the door open, as though walking in a dream. "Come, Sadie," she says quietly, and walks out the building.

Shilo doesn't hear the man. Somewhere within the fog inside her head, she hears a murmur in the distance.

"Daddy!" Sarah says. "I'm all right, I'm just so frightened. I was so worried I'd never get to hear your voice again. I love you so much. Are you okay? Listen, I think the water supply may be contaminated, so stay away from tap water. There's this dark cloud sweeping over London raining down this odd ash, and just a moment ago there were these powerful tremors that knocked us down."

Shilo sees nothing in the darkness. Even only six feet away from the double doors, the lights within the Cinemaplex are a mere glow in the swirling ash that alights upon her face and fills her nostrils and open mouth. There is a noise, little more than a rough grunt, coming from the car park, in front and to the right.

Shilo walks ahead, still floating in a dream world somewhere, lost in her own mind. I look just like Gene from XMen, things flurrying about, and I have entire control over it. I wonder if I can float. She looks down at her feet, and sees her feet floating off the pavement. She raises her arms to shoulder height and looks at them, swirling ash spinning around them, and smiles to herself.

Sadie whines incessantly, but Shilo barely hears it. She's travelling deep within her own mind, further down to where there is no outside. No one can get me there. Then, she screams into the wind, in a high pitched, child like voice, very different than the voice she normally speaks in, "You can't get me here!"

A screech and a shuffle outside. Those in the Cinemaplex can see the blurred form of Shilo standing with arms outstretched. A dark silhouette, small and lithe, lands on her shoulder. A scream, agonised and drawn-out, and Shilo falls backward. Another silhouette moves, similar to the first, landing on her as she rises to her feet. The dog barks, whimpers, howls.

Shilo knocked her head on the way down, and Sadie is barking wildly next to her side. What's going on? She looks over to her shoulder as she stands up. What in the hell is that?

She flails with her arms and squeezes her eyes shut, hoping to knock whatever it was off her shoulder. She screeches a blood curdling scream, body writhing from these things on her. Oh my god!!!

Her fogged brain registers the sharp sting of pain as the creature burrowed its mishappen head into the soft flesh between her ribs near her left shoulder. She can't see the creature clearly in the thick ash that rains down perpetually, cloaking everything and stinging her eyes. The other creature is on her belly. Warmth runs down her public bone, her hip and thigh, and she sees the gaping red turn gray with ash. The pain is shrill now, screeching through her mind. More of the creatures come rushing toward her, landing on her thigh, her chest, her shoulders.

"EEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

Shilo flails dismally, pulling the mallet from her sleeve and hammering the things as hard as she can manage. Her mind races wildly with panic and terror, but it is the sheer pain that trumps all. It cuts through her like a dagger, seering her mind from being thrown in a fire.

I'm in the cinemaplex across the street. I'm okay, but several others are injured and I'm helping them. What's happening at your end?" He hears Shilo's screams and looks up in shock. "Great Scott! A blind woman just went outside. I warned her not to, but...these small...beasts are swarming her...eating her! For God's sake, Sarah, stay indoors whatever you do!" Mark runs to the lobby doors, and kicks them open as hard as he can shattering the remaining glass. He looks over to Shilo, and see's the creatures tearing into her. With his brass knuckles already clamped tighly in his fist. He dives at the closest one of the things, and swings his fist as hard as he can aiming at what he hopes is it's head. He just wants to get them off of her, and drag her back inside. He wonders if back inside is even safe from these things.

"NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!" Shilo screams, wincing at the incredible pain. She has no idea what this looks like from the cinema lobby, but from her perspective, it's the scariest thing she's ever dreamed possible. They bite their way into her abdomen, and she can feel the blood gush and ooze out.

Shilo continues to swing madly at the birds but she is quickly losing her strength to do so. She notices Mark and a wave of relief washes over her. But this is a very bad thing for him.....any that tired of swarming her would surely start in on him as well. "No...Mark.........save.......yourself......too.....late.....for.....me..."
She face turns into a pained, terror stricken expression as she feels her body submitting. She is so very tired........

Thomas slightly dazed llaying on the floor by the bar. Slowly standing up he sees Mark charge out of the Cinemaplex with what looked like brass knuckles on his hand. Deciding to do what he can Thomas quickly adjusts his latop case so that it is hanging in front of him and charges out the door...

Mark's fist shatters the creature's spine and it falls writhing onto her belly. More shapes dart close by. A chittering, buzzing sound can be heard as their wings brush through the thick ash that fills the air.

Thomas sees one of the creatures buzz past his face. A sense of relief sweeps over him that he could not see the disgusting creature more clearly. These were not anything that belonged on Earth.

Three other men appear in the ash, their features shrouded by ash. One tries to tear the creatures away with his hands but they merely turn their attentions on him, crawling up his arms and digging into the soft flesh. He screams and staggers back, falling down the steps and rising to his feet with yet another scream. The noise seem to attract the beasts which flutter towards him in greater numbers.

Lionel looks back to the bartender. "Quickly, bring me the first aid kit and take my place!" he shouts back to her. "You'll have to keep this pressed on his wound to stop his bleeding. I need to help the blind woman!" As he awaits her, he hears Sarah pour her guts out to him about her horrible experiences. His heart wrenches, and he begins to cry. "My God...Oh, Sarah...I'm so sorry..." My poor, brave daughter, he thinks. How can she endure something like that a second time, and so soon?

"Billy!" cries out one of remaining two men before running towards Billy. The sound, the movement, or something else, attracted the beasts to him. One flung itself down onto his back, digging into his shoulder, and he grunted but kept moving. Another lunged at his leg and the leg went limp, dropping him down onto one knee. The man stood, just as Billy fell. "Billy! No, Billy! Help him! Please God!" But then there were no more words, merely agonised screams as he, himself, were engulfed by the curtain of ash until no more but a silhouette could be seen.

Mark put's his finger to his lips, and Shushes Shilo as he sets her down outside the heavy theatre doors. He opens it, and presses his back against it to keep it open. He reaches down, and whispers to Shilo "Almost there" as he takes her arm again, and helps pull her in.

He finds Billy moaning at the foot of the steps by his nameless friend. The two lay, bloodied and torn, their limbs limp as though paralysed, surrounded by the unmoving and headless bodies of those terrible creatures. The ash hangs thick across their bodies, covering them as though with sand.

The ash and blood make him slippery to hold. Reaching the double doors he throws them open and drags the young man inside, placing him on the floor, and only then realising what made the young man so odd to the touch. Grotesque lumps move in trembling lines beneath his skin. His eyes are a shape and colour that should not be held by any human. Billy opens his mouth and utters a high-pitched shriek.

This is your sanity check. Please see if any of these are higher than your character's current sanity. If so, use http://www.invisiblecastle.com to roll 1d6. The result will be your sanity loss.

Those who lose 5 sanity or more will either cower in fear, burst into hysterical crying/screaming, flee the scene or refuse to believe that there is anything abnormal happening, no matter what they see. Your choice. This will last for the next few minutes.

As horrifying as the sight is, Lionel keeps his cool. Suddenly, he thinks about Sarah's terrifying ordeal in the ambulance and knows what they must be looking at. "Cover your mouths with something!" he calls. "Don't let him put his mouth on yours!" He grabs the clean napkins that he hasn't yet used to stop the man's bleeding and ties a couple of them around his head to cover his mouth like a bandana as he runs towards the doors to help the others, leaving the injured man for now.

Mark has just set down Shilo inside when Billy let's out his mind shattering Shriek. Mark blacks out momentarily, and wakes up dazed leaning against the wall. He can't wait to see the next movie. Dawn of the Dead is one of his favorites. He walks past the frightened group near the front of the lobby, and looks toward Janet. "Let me get another one of those Guinness please my dear. I'll be right back to take care of the tab" he says smiling as he walks towards the bathroom.

Mark whistle's some tune that races through his mind. It's not like any song he's ever heard. It's loud, and thumping through his head occupying his mind totally as he relieves himself at the stall. He let's out a long sigh and does up his pants. Making his way to the sink he squirts the antibacterial soap on his hands, and holds them under the automatic faucets. The sink gurgles a moment and spits out a frothy thick burst of pulpy liquid that resembles scorched milk all over Mark's hand's as he smiles, and checks his teeth for bits of lodged popcorn in the mirror.

Shilo screams and writhes in pain, clutching her gut and sobbing.

"Oooooohh!!! Eeaaaaaahhh!" Her communication is only in grunts and groans by this point, as her stomach is a mess of blood and exposed flesh. In some parts you can see her internal organs, as the strange, otherworldly beasts had a long time to penetrate.

Her shoulder is a bloody mess as well, exposed bone protrudes from the gashes and her eyes have rolled back in her head momentarily. She is still awake, but likely unconscious, as the blood that she's lost is no doubt affecting her abilities.

Sadie had limped in behind, snarling and snapping at the beasts and has successfully chewed one off. She slumps down on the floor, and lays there, panting and howling in pain.

Mark soaks his hands in the gritty slimey goo, and rubs them together. Once he's sure they are clean he shakes them off, and walks over to turn on the hand dryer. He pushes the button, and rubs his hands together under the warm blowing jets. He grabs a couple of paper towels as well. "I hate those stupid Dryers. They never get the job done." Mark thinks as the melody in his head starts to form into strange syllables and verses chantlike almost. Mark hums the tune, and lips the words he sees in his mind as they become more and more clear to him. Sounds begin to come from his mouth. He isn't even aware of it as he stands in the mirror chanting the words that dance around his brain like fireflys. Illuminating him for a brief instant then fading away.
"guh SHKRIH-suh uhn Cthu-lhu MAH-ruh duh HYAHN. "
The words feel heavy in his mouth, strong, and acidic. The bile creeps up his throat with every passing syllable.
"guh NYIH-huh nuh PAYSH-choh-guh HOO."
His nose starts to bleed as he continues chanting to himself in the mirror.

BATHROOM
In the mirror, he could see words glow across the walls as though heated brands were burning through from the inside. In the mirror, his reflection stood in the dark, dressed in a white, lacy outfit that seemed more like a woman's nightgown than a robe, bangles run across his forearms, threaded with little bells that tinkled when he moved. In his right hand was a little filligree object, designed to sprinkle holy water when shaken. His left hand was empty. There should be something there but it had been lost, hidden below with the water. The water would never run clear without it.

The sky called to him and he glanced upwards, drawn instinctively, and recoiled. The sky was unfamiliar, alien, a writhing mass he couldn't comprehend. He knew the beneath-world. That was his domain. Their domain. The beneath-world rising.

Then the white goo that had caked his hands cracked and fell apart and he was himself again, though still confused and still with his mind skirting around the horrid revelations made today.

Was Shaun of the Dead still on?

Mark rubs his hands staring at the dried substance on the counter top. It gleams in the flourescent light. He feels light headed, and disoriented. He thinks back to the vision he saw in the mirror. His recollection was fuzzy. What was he wearing, and what was it he so desperately wanted to remember about his left hand? He shakes his head, and notices the blood and vomit stained legs poking akwardly out from the stall. His mind flashes back to what had just happened on the street, and turns to the man in the vomit, and blood smeared enclosure. There is no sound, or movement coming from the stall. Mark asks in a choked voice "Are you still in there mister?"

Janet has disappeared. Billy collapses to the floor. The hundred or so audience members crowd around peering at Shilo, the dog, the darkness, Billy. Some bleed, some cry, some murmur to each other, most stare in silence or apply what aid they can to the injured with torn pieces of clothing, with panadol, with tender words and attempts to draw some of the injured back into one of the theatres.
Image
"Please, let's all go back into one of the theatres," says a woman, her voice high and strident, cutting through it all, even silencing Billy's shriek. "My name is Suzie Thompson. If we stick together, we can get through this."

A man in a business suit goes to stand by her side. "She's right. We should barricade ourselves in."

"No!" cries out a Yorkshire lad. "There's no food in there."

"Where did that boss lady go?"

"Wait, my sisters are at school," the man says, imploring some of those who walked past. "Help me. I can't leave them there. They're waiting for me to pick them up." People continued walking, he hung his head.

"We'll get to that soon but we need a safe place to bring them."

"Please, don't you have any family?" he asked, trying to intervene with people who moved around him, though a few of them stopped beside him, nodding. "Please, I need to find my sisters. My mum... She can't... Please! I can't leave them. We could all go together. We could all help."

Shilo's eyes have rolled back in her head, mouth left agape, and her breathing has become shallow and raspy. Her face has become fairly pale, and she lays in a pool of blood that seeps into the carpet causing a red backdrop to Shilo's quickly fading body.

As Thomas and Lionel pick her up to move her, her body feels like dead weight, and her neck hangs down and flops. She groans a bit when they pick her up, and her eyes flicker for a moment, then close again.

"The...creature attempts to grab its victim," says Lionel, "and then it tries to lock its mouth over the victim's. If it succeeds, the victim is paralysed, helpless. There are these mushroom-looking things in its mouth that it tries to force down the victim's throat." He holds his emotions in check, knowing full well that the victim was his daughter, whose distraught voice even now is telling him that there was a note from Lyle found in her locker. "That's why I told everyone to cover their mouths. I wouldn't go near him to try to move him, though. He might attack if anyone gets close. It...it happened before."

Lionel stares at Mark when he speaks. "The water may have been contaminated. A man at the hospital developed facial bleeding and bizarre behaviour after some water dripped on his face from a vent. You do seem to have recovered, though. If that man in the bathroom looks like Billy, then he probably is and nobody should go near him either. I thought I saw some of those small creatures enter Billy and move around inside him." He looks down at Shilo. "Oh, dear. Did any of them get inside her? We may need to get them out before it's too late!" He examines her carefully and speaks into the phone. "Sarah, honey, please don't panic. I'm here. I'm right across the street." As if to drive this point home, he hears Sarah's panicky voice over the phone: "Daddy! Are you all right?"

Billy snarls and sees one of the audience members peeking out of the doorway. His snarl becomes higher and more frenzied and he closes in quickly, leaping forward and knocking the middle-aged man down. The two disappear into the corridor that folds in toward the cinema.

Lionel continues to struggle desperately. Sarah survived one of these things, he thinks, and so can I. Gathering all of his might and determination, he punches the thing that used to be Shilo again right between the eyes and causes significant damage. Once more he tries to wrench himself free. Where did the bartender go? Is there a weapon back behind the bar?

[OOC: I rolled a 2 on 1d100 on my roll to hit. Is this a critical hit? Does it do additional damage? The basic damage I rolled this time was 2 on 1d3, in addition to the 3 damage from the first punch.]

"DADDY!" cries Sarah over the phone. "Please don't die...please don't die..."

Mark shakes it off, and gets to his feet as quickly as he can. He looks around for Billy, and instead sees the fight going on Between Lionel, and Shilo. "Is she?" He sees her rather large dog lunging at Thomas as well. They are the same distance apart. "Nothing seems strange about the dog, it's just protecting it's master. That guys was saying something about cutting into her though. I really wish I'd wake up now" He thinks as he turns towards the two people fighting. Mark slides in on his knees and Swings his arm connecting with Shilo's shoulder.

Sadie is knocked aside with a whine. The blow surely broke a rib judging by the sound. Her blood-streaked fur trembles as though the muscles beneath them were twitching wildly. She shakes her head, growls and then whines, and then lunges at Thomas again, missing his leg and circling back around. Mark's denim jeans are slightly torn, having protected his leg from being pierced by her teeth in the first attack.

Billy rises from his attack, leaving the man sputtering and clutching at his ruined arm, the man crawling into view, Billy standing just in view, and with a snarl, turns to regard the others in the lobby. Then he turns toward the panicked cries of those inside the audience.

Shilo tries to hold onto Lionel, but finds her grip failing. He manages to pull away somewhat and stand, and Shilo's blood covered body shakes in effort as she moans her zombie groan, "UUuuuuunnnngggggggghhhh"

She sits up, which seems impossible considering her abdomen is still a mess of open gashes and wounds, and she stands then, her head down sinisterly and face pale white. She sees Mark then and swipes at him, grabbing hold of his arm.

He darts across the room, and checks the handle.. The door is locked tight. Mark quickly swings his bag around, and pulls out his lockpicks. Mark quickly pops the lock open. There are no audible sounds coming from beyond the door. The Employee's Only door that stands beside the Men's Toilets opens onto a corridor lined with a cheap grey carpet. Three marked doors are on either side and at the very end is a door marked: "Stairwell."

Sadie
lunges forward, her teeth sinking sharply into Thomas's upper arm and she worries at it savagely. The wound stings sharply.

Lionel finds an empty vodka bottle behind the bar, and he also grabs the cloth used for wiping the bar clean. He slips the mobile phone into one of his jacket pockets and the bottle into another, then runs back to help Thomas, tying the cloth around his face to help protect his mouth better than the napkins alone. "Bravo, Daddy!" comes Sarah's voice over the phone following a round of applause. "Well done! I'm so relieved you're all right."

"That makes two of us, princess," replies Lionel, kneeling down next to the pregnant woman. "It takes more than that to kill us Carpenters." He immediately checks the woman's pulse and examines her for any sign that she's had a stroke (always the first thing he thinks of; those painful memories are never far away) or has gone into diabetic shock. He also looks to see how far along her pregnancy appears to be and checks if she's going into labor. He's had to deliver the occasional baby before, but never under such conditions. "We're too exposed out here in the lobby," he says to the people as he works. "There are more of those things outside, plus one in the toilets and however many went into the theatre. We all need to get somewhere secure. Do any of you folks work here or know of a good place? If one of you has keys, that would be ideal. Then we could get through that blasted door."

"Yes, that sonds good," says Lionel, trying to gently revive the woman using smelling salts from the first aid kit. "The only problem is getting there. Going outside is incredibly dangerous. Not only am I not sure what the ash does, but there are also those small parasitical creatures out there. They attack people and burrow into their skin, turning them into those things that attacked us. The blind woman went out there, and she, her seeing-eye dog, and that Billy fellow got those critters under their skin. If only she had listened to me...There were two more men out there that I think got infested too, so we'll need to avoid them. If we're going to go outside, we need to move as quickly and as quietly as possible, and we should cover our mouths and noses with something first. We'll have to hug the walls and take the shortest route, and the fastest among us should take the key and open the door for the rest of us. How far is the nearest entrance to your store from the closest exit from the cinemaplex? I don't suppose there's a connecting door, is there?" He turns to the boy. "It looks like your mother just fainted, and she and your baby brother or sister should be okay. If we can't wake her up, we'll have to carry her."

We're going to try to make it to the superstore down the alley, but first we all need to get ready. There should be some more cloths like mine over at the bar. If not, napkins are better than nothing. Everyone needs to wrap them around their faces to cover their mouths and noses. Put on a coat if you've got one, and if it or your sweater has a hood, pull it up. When we go, we'll need to run as fast as possible and make as little noise as we can. Once we're safely inside, I'll treat everyone's injuries. Is there anyone with leg injuries that would slow you down? If so, I'll patch you up now so you can make it. Also, nobody drink or even touch any water that comes from a tap or any source other than a sealed container. The water is contaminated and causes facial bleeding and bizarre behaviour."

A few people were injured from the quake, but in the fear and excitement, most have forgotten their injuries as they stand, leaning on each other or brooms for balance. At a glance, most people's injuries aren't serious, merely the result of intense bruising and swollen tendons. There is little one can suggest for such conditions other then bed rest.

The bar tender reappears from the storeroom behind the bar and looks nervously at them all. She carries a high-powered rifle in her slender hands, mounted with a torch, and has a dual shoulder holster slung with handguns. A large first aid kit, similar to what paramedics' wear, was slung over her hip. She looks quite a sight, almost toppling over under all that weight.

"The perimeters' been breached," she says in a soft, low voice. "Perhaps, w-we should find s-someplace else? The others have gone to get help. I chose to come help you all. W-we'd need to be quiet... Wrapping our shoes in cloth would work..." She looks about nervously. "W-well?"

I'm sure some of us can help carry some of your equipment if you'd like. It turns out we already have a secure location to head to. This gentleman-" he indicates the burly man from the superstore, "-has kindly offered to let us into the store next door where he works. It's very secure and has a well-stocked staff kicthen." He tells her the plan and warns her of the dangers he told the others about.

Then he speaks into the phone, turning down the volume: "Sarah, honey, how are you holding up?"

"Okay, considering," she replies. "We just rescued a cute little kitten that had been trapped in a locker, and I've got my things back, including my mobile. That way we can keep in touch after we leave this station. I'll set it to vibrate so it doesn't make noise."

"Excellent idea. Mine is already set to vibrate. We're going to have to make a run for the superstore next door in a bit, so I'll have to hang up before we go, but I'll call you back once we're safe and I have a spare moment."

Sorry I took so long but we have to keep these things unloaded and separate in case a robber gets wise to our so-called secret door. I don't know anything that's going on. Hell, I got the feeling there might one day be zombies but, to tell you the truth, me and my family just wanted to be prepared against all things. We're not prepared for this, though. Still, let's do what we can. We gotta keep each other safe."

Her radio buzzes at her hip and she draws it to her lips. "Yeah, they seem fine for now but we need to get moving."

"A pleasure to meet you, Jennifer," says Lionel. "I've heard that others were having trouble with their phones, but I suspect mine works because I'm calling the hospital across the street. My daughter Sarah is a nurse there. She's smart as a whip and has figured out a lot about what we're facing...most of it the hard way. If you'd like to speak to her yourself, you may." He fills her in on what Sarah and he have learned. "They're not zombies, exactly, as they're still alive, but they're no longer human either. I suggest you cover your mouth with something as well. It could save your life if God forbid one of them grabs you. I'm a decent shot myself with any long gun, but I suspect you're better with a rifle than I am. If you've got an extra shotgun, however, I can back you up."

Thomas look a the Jennifer and says. "Some of the poeple here were bit or sracthed by one of those things after it took over a human. Should we be concerned about those people, and the possiblity of them contaminating us. I also have some very useful tools in my car in the lot out. Staring right at her guns he say one of those tools is my own gun.

Jennifer smiles. "A gun in the boot of your car? How positively illegal. As to your mobile, the distance between you and her hardly matters. Mobile phones use sattellites, not radio signals, don't they? In which case, the fact that your mobile manages to so much as get a signal is odd. Anyhow..." She moves over to Shilo and looks with disgust at the lumps on her body. "Those growths... How did they get there?"

"Something burrowed into her skin," says a man. Thomas recognises him as the third fellow, the one who didn't rush after Billy. "The things' heads detached in them."

"With a parasite that big compelling it, I doubt a bite could do anything," says Jennifer. "I could be wrong, though... Still, it looks likely, right? We're lucky on one count. Obviously, you don't need to destroy the head." She giggles weakly. Despite her strong words, she still doesn't seem particularly tough. The striking juxtaposition of well-held weaponry and shyness she displays makes the whole scene that much more absurd.

"I don't know if I'd trust you with a gun after what you pulled, sir," says Lionel. "I don't know what effects their bites have. It's possible there may be some kind of infection, but we shouldn't make any assumptions based on zombie movies. In any case, I remind you again that the dog that bit you had turned, so for your sake I hope you were not infected. Once we reach the store we can disinfect and dress all the bites as best we can. Trying to reach your car may be dangerous. How far away are you parked?"

The man who had gone out with Billy moves in close to talk to Jennifer for a few moments in hushed tones. The rest of the group begins to crowd around Jennifer, forgetting Lionel and the other for a moment. An argument breaks out, low and harried. It seems paranoia has already struck.

Thomas says lucky for me the dog was'nt a zombie it was not attack by anything but us. As far as what happened. I required frist aid and you tried to blackmail me before you would give me the kit, and I swear if you ever try anything like that agin maybe I will just kill you were you stand .UNDERSTAND ME ITS not your show your not in charge you dont make the calls here and for all we know you and your only working phone around here could be part of whatever is causeing this to happen I cant get wi-fi reception but somehow your phone work anyone else find this odd. Now Jennifer this is what i can offer you. Me and my weapon if we can get it out of the car all long with my other tools and skills that I have would be at your disposal. All I ask is that anyone bitten anywhere has to stay even Lionel will tell you they have a fungus in there mouth that transmitts if it comes into contact with anthor mouth can we deny the possible that it can trasmit that same infection through any bite wound.

"Please remain calm, everyone," says Lionel. "We can survive this, but we're going to have to learn to cooperate with each other even if we don't get along. Remember that we are not each other's enemies, and the real danger isn't human. We must stick together and set aside our differences. To set an example, I forgive Thomas here for his earlier transgressions." He extends his hand for him to shake it.

"I agree with you," says a pair of young women, one of which was quite attractive, moving over to stand with Thomas. One of them is injured, but the small pieces of broken glass poking out of her leg suggests it was in the Earthquake, unless zombies knew how to scrape off flesh. "We're not going to go somewhere with a bunch of the infected. And look at that dog, there's not a single tumour on it."

"Fungus?" Jennifer asks, confused. She purses her lips and draws a handgun. The audiences gives her some more room instinctively. She pries Shilo's mouth open with the gun, the rifle hanging merely from its strap, and pulls a narrow but powerful torch from her belt which she shines into Shilo's mouth. "There's no visible sign of any infection."

She stands, flips Shilo onto her back with a shoe and pulls out a knife. She carefully frees the twisted head from Shilo's back with a machete slipped into her boot. The head was a mix of lobster, bird and jellyfish, strands flowing from the little head to Shilo's spine. The movement unleashed a small torrent of bizarre little creatures, each about an inch long, as narrow as the larger inch ants, with folded up membranous wings and tiny heads. She squeals and crushes it beneath her blade and straightens.

"We can check people," she says. "Anything that big would need to burrow beneath the skin. If the bite or scratch marks don't have holes in them, these things couldn't have gotten in. We really better go, though. This thing seems to be an incubator... We should burn her, and that fellow, Billy, but I don't think there's any fuel in here to use. Is there some in your car, Thomas?"

"You had better not kill me," whispers Lionel back. "My death would not go unavenged."

Lionel walks over to join the others. "We can certainly examine everyone to make sure they don't have any of these parasites, but I agree that a mere bite or scratch would not be big enough for one to enter. They move beneath the skin, so we can detect them. Besides, they go to work quite quickly. Shilo did not last long before she turned. If anyone else here had had one, they would have already turned as well." He regards the dog sadly. "So the parasites didn't infest her? It seems they only go after humans. She must have just gone mad and attacked Thomas for no reason then." Or perhaps she was just a good judge of character, he thinks. "It happened at the same instant Shilo attacked me, and they had both been outside together, so I thought...poor creature."

"If these baby ones can burrow, ah don't think you'd see 'em, they're too small," says a Scottish woman in a plain, blue dress and rainboots.

Jennifer simply nods. "Yeah, we should go. Only ... how'd those things notice Shilo anyway? With all that ash out there, we'd be moving on memory and we're far smarter than those things. It'd have to be sound, most likely. Or movement because she was silhouetted in the lobby... Maybe we should move those two things into the toilets and be careful not to let anything spill out. Does anyone know how to use a gun?"

A woman pushes a man slightly forward. "Yeah," he says, revealing his American accent. "Yeah, I do." He seems faintly embarressed. "Not cause I'm American, though, but because I was a cop in Australia. Yeah, we moved around a bit." He looks over at his wife.

"But he can't go outside with you," says his wife, also American, the golden ring gleaming on her index finger. "He's needed in here. We need some defence too."

Jennifer passes him a loaded .45. "You better be on the side of the angels."

"Hmm,"" says Lionel, examining the corpse. "In that case, we'd need to check for entry wounds. I think you're right about how the creatures found Shilo, Jennifer. She was shouting and standing with her arms outstretched in the light. I don't think she was right in the head, frankly. I told her not to go out, but...Well, if we remain stealthy and stay out of the light we should be okay. I'm good with a long arm, but I'm all thumbs when it comes to handguns, I'm afraid. Better to hold onto the other one yourself or give it to somone else who knows how to use it. I'd avoid the men's toilets. The guy in there on the floor could be infested."

"Take the paramedic's bag at any rate," says Jennifer, sighing. "I'll keep the other handgun for awhile. How are we going to stay out of the light with this damn light on in the lobby? It's gotta attract those things, too." She goes behind the bar and fiddles around, removing a heavy Maglite torch and popping it down on the counter top. "We should remove those corpses first, though, before we turn anything off."

Lionel hears Sarah speak into the phone: "Daddy, we're getting ready to leave too. I've got my mobile now, so you can reach me on that."

"Sarah, apparently nobody else can get their phones to work," answers Lionel. "If I can't call your mobile and you can't reach me, I'll have to call this station again."

"You can also try the nurse's station on the first floor." She tells him the number. "We're planning to head up there when we're done down here. One more thing." She lowers her voice. "My locker was wide open, and they found a note in there from Lyle. Maybe it was in there all along this past month and I never noticed it, but I can't see how. The alternative is just as impossible, but so many crazy things are happening I just don't know what to think."

"Oh, Sarah...I wish I could be there to protect you. Don't try to go outside to get to me, though. Stay in the hospital and I promise I'll try to get to you once there's a safe way to do it. You stay with the others and don't go anywhere by yourself. We defeated those creatures. They were like the one you described, and the one that used to be the blind woman grabbed me and tried to clamp her mouth on mine. I didn't see any mushrooms, but maybe they take time to form. Some of the others were bitten, but they should be okay. I thought the seeing-eye dog had been infested too, but it must have simply gone mad. Those of us at the cinemaplex are going to make a run for the superstore next door. It's very secure and I'm with some good people...well, except for that Thomas lout. He even threatened to murder me after I forgave him and shook his hand. Don't worry about me, though, honey. I can take care of myself. I love you more than anything, Sarah. Stay safe."

"You too, Daddy. I love you too. G-goodbye."

Lionel puts his phone away and looks up as Thomas approaches him and speaks his piece. "Thank you," he says. "It appears we got off on the wrong foot, and I suppose the stress of the situation is affecting us all. Sarah is a wonderful lady. She means everything to me, and I want nothing more than to see her safe and sound again. I'd wager she's seen even more than you have. I've been a doctor for over thirty years now and I've seen quite a few people die already. And yes, Sarah is at the hospital. Why do you ask?"

Lionel sighs. "I'd love nothing better," he says, "but it's simply too dangerous at the present time. Those parasites and the things they infested are out there, and the other side of the road is farther away than it looks. The entrance to the superstore is 40 feet away, and we can get there by hugging the walls rather than running across the car park and the open street. Once safely inside we can resupply, get our bearings, and come up with a plan. If we made a run for the hospital now, I don't know if any of us would make it there alive, and we won't do Sarah or any of the other survivors at the hospital any good if we get ourselves killed trying to rescue them. She's not a little girl, she's a grown woman and she's made of strong stuff. She has what it takes to hold out until we can come for her."

"Ma'am," says Lionel, "I'm Dr. Lionel Carpenter. I know all too well how you feel, but at the moment it's far too dangerous to travel anywhere. My own daughter Sarah is at the hospital across the way and I want nothing more than to be with her and protect her right now, but even that's too far to go. We won't do our loved ones any good if we get killed trying to reach them. I don't think anyone at the day care center will be leaving under the circumstances. We can try to reach them on my mobile phone. That way, if the call goes through, you can talk to them and we can warn them of the dangers."

"I'm getting a busy signal," says Lionel. "At least we know the phone can get through. Maybe their phone was off the hook, but it could be the line truly is busy with another call. We'll try again in a few minutes. I'm serious about how dangerous it is out there. I saw what those parasites can do to someone, and she didn't even make it ten feet from the front door. Besides, you can't even see ten feet in front of you with all that ash out there. Nobody can drive under these conditions, let alone find their way. For now we just need to trust in God and our loved ones' ability to survive to make sure they stay safe, until we can come up with a way to travel. I know, ma'am. I almost lost Sarah tonight, but she survived thanks to a miraculous rescue."

"Ma'am, I do know exactly how you feel," says Lionel. "Don't you think I wish I could be with Sarah right now. She's been through the wringer, and while she's fully grown she'll always be my little girl. She needs me, but she needs me alive. It would break her heart if I died in a futile attempt to reach her, as I'm sure it would break your children's hearts if you did the same. Please, let's try to get through on the phone and see if there's even anyone there. For all we know, they could have left the day care center to go somewhere else when they heard about what's going on." He tries dialing the day care center again on his mobile phone.

The gun case is there as is his case. There is a low growl somewhere above your car. You hear Jennifer shift her weight and fire.

Those in the Cinemaplex hear a shot go off. The crowd, now armed with pockets bulging with sweets and cups of drink, their shoes wrapped in fabric, move into the dark lobby towards the pitch black windows. The other two still can't be seen.

[OOC:I tried a Persuade roll after my Credit Rating roll failed. I hope that's okay, as I got a critical success on the Persuade! He's certainly been talking to her long enough that he's had a chance to use it.]

Lionel could tell that this lady was not quite swayed by his stature as a doctor. Her emotions were obviously too strong, but not so strong that she couldn't be swayed by reason. "Come on, let's go back to the lobby. I heard a shot, and I need to make sure the others are okay. I'll try to find a way for you to get in touch with your children and find out if they're all right." He holds the cell phone to his ear to see if he has gotten another busy signal or if he has gotten through this time.

The woman nods, somewhat calmed by the seriousness with which he said those words. "I'm Katy, by the way," she says as they move to the lobby. She seems to be waiting for him to say something else...

(Persuade takes at least ten minutes and you've only been talking to her for a couple - so continue on, though I will take that score as a success.)

[OOC: Okay, thanks. In Zombie Apocalypse I have been allowing Persuade after just a couple of minutes, but time moves much more slowly in that game. Was Lionel able to get through on the phone this time, or was it another busy signal?]

Lionel offers Katy his hand. "A pleaure to meet you, Katy," he says, escorting her back to the lobby. "I'm Dr. Lionel Carpenter. I know how important our children are." He fishes out his wallet and shows her a photograph of Sarah in her green nurse's uniform. "This is my daughter Sarah, and she means the world to me. We both work at the hospital." He shows her another photo, this one older and showing three people: a much younger Lionel, a young woman who looks startlingly like Sarah but even lovelier, and an adorable five year old girl with straight blond hair and a huge smile on her face. Her parents sit side by side on a couch, and she sits on their laps. Each of them have an arm around her and are clasping their hands in front of her, and she rests her little hand on top of theirs. "This is a picture of our family. Sarah is growing up a lot like her mother, Beatrice. This picture was taken only months before Beatrice passed on." His eyes start to water. "Sarah is all I have left."

Thomas withdraws his beautiful .357 Magnum revolver (1d8+1d4 damage, 20 yards base range, 1 attack per round, six bullets). There's a total of twelve bullets in the gun case, including what is already loaded into the revolver. He hears a pained screech that sounds more like a bird than anything else and something flops to the ground a few yards away.

Lionel only got an engaged signal but his pictures seem to be distracting the mother well enough.

"I don't have any pictures on me," says Katy, seeming drained. "I'd need to get home to get them."

Do you know if they have another line? Maybe a fax number? There's probably a fax machine here, or at the superstore next door. Or maybe you know the cell phone number of one of the people there. From her description, it sounded like the creature had been trying to mate with her using its mouth. "My God, that's it!" he says softly. "Those mushrooms in their mouths must be like eggs, containing the parasites' offspring. That must be how they reproduce, by implanting them orally within a human victim!" That's what almost happened to my poor Sarah... He fights back his tears.

The man exhales his last breath.

Lionel blinks back tears. Losing a patient always feels bad, especially when it happens in such a pointless way. Sarah always took it even worse than he did, but that didn't make it easy. "He's too far gone," he says, shaking his head.

Swallowing his disgust, Lionel picks up the can and carefully pours some of the petrol on the man, making sure to save enough for the two bodies in the other restroom. When he finishes, he makes a thin trail of it leading a short distance away, then seals the can and backs off. "Everyone get back," he says. "Light the end of that when everyone's clear."

Thomas stands and leaves the mens restroom. He heads for the dppor to ladies room and again asumes a low shoting stance.

Jennifer does as Lionel bids her and the corpse is lit up with flame. The smell is atrocious.

Lionel backs out of the bathroom before the smell of burning flesh gets worse. "All right, Jennifer," he says. "Now for the two in the ladies' room." He silently approaches the other door and looks inside again, making sure that the bodies are still motionless and that Jennifer and Thomas are covering him before proceeding.

Jennifer circles around to get into position for a better shot.

Lionel moves in cautiously and douses the bodies of Billy, Shilo, and her dog Sadie liberally with the gasoline, again creating a thin trail leading towards them. When he finishes, he backs out of the room, sets the gas can down well away from the bathroom door, and nods to Jennifer.

"You can light it any time you're ready," whispers Lionel. "Then we'll gather everything we can and make a run for the superstore."

Lionel moves away from the bathroom door before the stench of the burning corpses can carry through the door. He makes sure that his feet are wrapped up and helps to organize and prepare the survivors who are going to the superstore.

The survivors sit quietly in the theatre lobby. There is an air of quiet desperation and discontent about them. For now, they seem compliant. How long that will last was anyone's guess. Lionel knew as much as most just how contrary people could be. Perhaps the sight of Jennifer's rifle had stunned them into silence? Most likely not. Most likely they just wanted to leave as much as he did.

"We should bring the petrol can with us," says Lionel, picking it up and making sure the cap is screwed on tight. "We may need the rest of the gas later. Bring whatever food and drinks you can carry. Anything else we should collect before we leave, Jennifer?" He looks around the lobby. "Has anyone seen Mark? I'm not surprised he slipped away."

"I'm not sure," says Jennifer. "We've already gotten all we can out of the food... There's not much else."

"All right, I guess we're ready to go then," replies Lionel. "There will be more food and potable water in the superstore. Everyone who's coming with us should gather quietly near the lobby doors. We'll need to move as quickly and quietly as possible." He turns to the man who worked in the superstore. "You should have your key in your hand so you can open the door fast. Jennifer, you'll need to keep us covered with your rifle, and Thomas has his pistol." Lionel starts doing a quick head count to see how many people are going and which ones. "We'll go in pairs. Hold your partner's hand and don't get separated. If there's an odd number, there'll be one threesome. Make sure your partner gets there safely, and remember to keep a covering over your mouth."

There's forty nine people, all in all. Jennifer simply nods and checks her rifle over.

"Excuse me, she looks barely nineteen," says one fellow, rising to his feet. "She's as likely to shoot me as anyone else. If anything, I should have the rifle. I've done a bit of hunting here and there."

A few people look at the stern-looking thirty-year-old, athletic and all business, then at the rather daintier blonde teen.

Here it starts...

"I'm an experienced hunter," says Lionel, "and I can tell by the way she carries it that she knows how to handle a rifle better than I do. Wars are fought largely by people Jennifer's age, and she has clearly had similar training. My father was around her age when he signed up to serve in World War Two. I also remind you that the rifle is her property, and it's up to her who uses it."

The man snorts but makes no further argument.

The other fellow, the American whom Jennifer had given the handgun, and his wife, come over to stand with them as though to show his tacit approval.

"Okay, let's pair up and head out," says Lionel. "There are 49 of us, so that means one group of three." He nods to the American couple. "I presume you two will go together. I'll go with Thomas, if that's all right with him. The chap with the key ought to go in the first group so he can get the door open. I suggest that two others go with him. Any volunteers?"

No one volunteers. They merely sit in silence, avoiding Lionel's gaze. Finally, the mother he had consoled earlier raises a trembling hand.

"Thank you, Katy," says Lionel. "I don't move as fast as I used to, but I can be the third in that group, and someone else can go with Thomas. Once everyone has chosen a partner, we'll move out. It'll be hard to see through the ash, but the fellow who works in the store knows the way. Each group should be sure to keep the ones behind it and in front of it in view. Jennifer, perhaps you should go with the second group in case we run into trouble." He waits for everyone to choose a partner.

Lionel answers the phone. "Hello?" he says. "Sarah, is that you? Are you all right?"

"I'm better than all right, Daddy!" gushes Sarah on the other end of the phone. "A helicopter came and landed on the roof and evacuated some of us! There's also a brave little girl named Dahlia and a child welfare worker named Aidan. The pilot just said we're going to a nearby military outpost. Maybe once they drop us off they can come back for you and the others at the cinemaplex."

Lionel sighs with relief. "That's wonderful news, angel! I'm so glad you got out of there. We're about to head for the superstore now. I'll ask the man who works there if there's a way to access the roof and if a helicopter could land on it. There are 49 of us here, not counting Mark. He appears to have buggered off. Technically fifty, as there's a pregnant woman who's near to term. I'll have to stay with her in case she goes into labor."

"Mark..." says Sarah, twinging from the memory. "That was the ambulance driver's name..."

"This is a different fellow, but that reminds me. I think I know what those mushroom things were, but I don't think you'll like it."

"Probably not, but you'd best tell me anyway. We'll need to know."

"I believe they're some form of eggs that contain the parasites' offspring. That must be how the creatures reproduce."

"Oh, God. No wonder it felt like...you know." Sarah pauses. "It's a good thing I was wearing protection."

Lionel winces. Even though he can't see her, his daughter's anguish is obvious and he thanks God that she was spared such a horrible fate. "Quite. We're getting ready to leave in a few minutes. Anything else new at your end?"

"Gosh, where do I start? Well, after I got off the phone with you earlier, I went with Leroy and Joel to the kitchen. I got a bigger knife there, but we didn't have a chance to gather any food or water. Karlene came after us with a knife. It must have been one of those parasite-infested people who got her and dragged her out of the ambulance earlier, only she didn't have a mask on. We retreated into the kitchen and locked the door, then left by another door and managed to get upstairs." Sarah continues recounting her terrifying ordeal.

"I'm so proud of you, Sarah," says Lionel after Sarah describes her first desparate race to the roof, arriving just in time to keep the chopper from leaving her and the others trapped there. He listens with alarm when she tells him about her second, more terrifying run, chased by some unknown creature that had taken out an armed policeman almost effortlessly.

Sarah takes a deep breath after all her talking and stifles a yawn. "I should probably let you go now. I love you so much, Daddy."

"I love you too, sweetheart. I'll call you back when we're safely in the superstore. Call me when you get to the outpost, or any time at all if you want to talk."

"Okay, I'll talk to you later. Bye!"

Lionel hangs up and puts his phone away. "That was my daughter, Sarah. A police helicopter evacuated her and a couple of other survivors from the hospital, and they're on their way to a nearby military outpost. I'm hoping they can make further trips to ferry us to the outpost too, but I can't be certain they can do it. A lot depends on how much fuel they have available and how many people they can support with their supplies." He turns to the superstore employee. "Do you know if a helicopter could land safely on the superstore's roof, and if there's a way to get up there from inside?"

There is a mechanical sound that arises and falls, a haunting wail, terrible in its devastating howl that comes from outside. The sounds of an engine come from above, rising and falling, a shuddering, chuttering sound. The others duck instinctively, confused.

OOC: Know roll for the mechanical sound. History roll for the engine sound recognition.

Is that the helicopter already? thinks Lionel. "I recognize that sound!" he says. "And the engine, too!"

It all seems impossible. The low, anxious wailing of an air raid siren. The harsh notes of a German bomber cruising overhead. Outside it is still deathly dark. The other survivors huddle about nervously.

"Great Scott!" blurts out Lionel. "Jennifer, turn off all the lights quick! That was an air raid siren, and that aircraft flying overhead is no helicopter. It's a bloody German bomber from the Blitz! It seems impossible, but that's what it is! The war was winding down when I was born, but my father told me all about it. We all need to get to a shelter stat. You mentioned there was some room below ground?"

There was light and sound. There was pain and misery. There was movement, a giant surge, a leap, coiling and springing, then settling and more pain. The point of contact was yards ago. The world keeps spinning. Light and sound. Screams. Wails. Light and sound. All about it falls. How did it come? Sound and fury. Something cackles, crackles, screeching overhead. A giant whump. All around, his vision starts to clear. His ears ring. He can't hear. Everything dull and light.

Roll Luck. On a success, take 1d4 damage and find yourself in a surviving doorway, surrounded by rubble. On a failure, take 1d8+1 damage and find yourself pinned beneath the rubble.
