Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Weapon List
Axes Included :
Mammen throwing Axe : As much a test of the craftsman's artistry as his skill.
Bearded throwing Axe :
Short Axe : The Short Viking Axe was again useful both on the farm and in battle. It excelled as a close quarters weapon, while still being light enough to throw when necessary.
Viking War Axe : very common.
Double Headed Axe : uncommon but very cool.
Double handed Broad Axe (Huscarl): Or Dane-Axe. Popular long hilted axe.
Swords included:
Viking sword :
Viking short sword :
Viking broad sword :
Two handed sword : The Vikings didn’t use two handed weapons, but legends tell of Viking warriors using their swords in two hands. Also the Viking frequently raided the English, so any English two handed sword can be used by the Vikings.
Spears Included :
Viking Short bladed spear : The short blade, inherently stiffer and more resistant to bending or breaking, was capable of piercing any body armour of the period.
Viking Throwing spear : The Nordic warrior frequently carried several light Throwing Spears into combat. This style displays the narrow, sharply pointed head designed to pierce mail.
Viking thrusting spear : The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking's creative mix of art and war.
Other Viking Weapons :
Hammer : Very rare, unlike the legends would have you believe. Still you can pick this one if you want to.
Halberd : rare
Javelin : rare
Poleaxe : common
Long Bow : common
Sling : common but not very effective.
Mace : Not traditionally made by the Vikings but some Vikings still carried them after English conquests.
Flails: Not traditionally made by the Vikings but some Vikings still carried them after English conquests.

Almost all warriors, from the highest to the lowest carried a single edged knife known as a scramseax. The smaller examples range from about 7.5 - 35cm (3" - 14") in blade length, and this is probably the knife referred to as the hadseax. There are also a few very long examples whose blade lengths are in the 54 - 75cm (22" - 30") range. These larger knives are certainly weapons rather than tools, and were referred to as a langseax.
Daggers :
Other cool stuff
The stories talk about the use of a friðbönd (peace strap), straps to prevent the sword from being drawn in anger in places where its use was prohibited

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Hey Dsig-
Actually I had written in my character that his personal equipment included a bear skin (what kind of armor value), leather armor with scales- for hunting, and a chainmail armor with plate breast plate- + Helm. is this ok?
I will make some changes to fit your weapon list.

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
The Vikings didn't have any plate mail. They had chainmail though and I'll add it to the list but it was more like Ring mail. The tightly spaced chainmail shirts weren't used by the Vikings until later. I just read something interesting. When going on raids the Vikings sometimes even took off their armor for better freedom of movement but obviously nobody has to do this. I'm going to say wealthy people had access to chain armor, so if you want chain armour you should put some skill points on some sort of credit rating equivalent based skill.
The style of chain will be one better damage reduction than the best armor I have on my list.

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
What about Viking helmets?
Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Contrary to popular belief, Vikings did not have horns on their helmets. No idea where that started from.

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Alright...but surely they had helmets without horns?
If I were to gamble, I'd bet that the idea of horns on Viking helmets came from the horns on German helmets, seeing as the Germans liked the Vikings so much in their latter years.

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
For sure! No helmets with horns. The hammer is just a fun weapon. I'm sure some people would chooes a rare weapon if they could find it.
As for the horns. if you really want horns on your helm, then everyone knows you as the asshole with the horns on your helmet.
Other Vikings will be like :
Oh great! Here comes Atgar and his fucking helmet!! He thinks he's a total badass just because he killed a goat.

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Nice!
Could be that a Viking got so hammered that he thought the best place for his drinking horn was on his helmet. "Dood! Thorfinn was so sloshed last night! The idiot had his drinking horn on his helmet! There was mead everywhere!"
"I hate to tell you Sven but that was my pissing horn he had on his head, he doused himself in my piss. Why do you think I was laughing so hard?"

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
the tapestries and whatnot that depicts vikings with horned helmets is where the whole thing came from, but most likely this was either the common portrayal as Pagans as Demons and satan worshippers, or it was all Ritualistic, your right there though theres no real evidence they ever actually wore themAndrew wrote:Contrary to popular belief, Vikings did not have horns on their helmets. Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
Sweet! I buy my bro a traditional Viking weapon every Christmas. This year I was hoping to buy him a shield but I can't find one for under 200 bucks. Might have to go with a scramasax or a two handed huscarl axe.
Hey Sowelu. You should resize your image in image shack or whatever image hosting site you are using. I'd love to see the whole thing. The hilt looks rad!

Re: Viking and Eskimo Equipment
ohh sorry yeah it was a picture off of my phone camera
ill take one of the Handle and Pommel
and yeah Shields can be expensive, and by the looks of it harder to Import than Swords =/
in australia anyway. oddly enough they're harder on Bayonet sized weapons, which is basically all knives under 18 inches, than they are on swords.
funny that
