THE VIKING / ESKIMO MIXER : BYOB

This is where we utter idle threats to each other and pave the way for a bloody character party vs character party meeting. Join in the mixer folks.

If an Eskimo's gotta get eaten: It might be the Eskimo with the least amount of posts in the Mixer!

If a Viking's gotta get eaten: It might be the viking with the least amount of posts in the Mixer!

There are going to be three viking ships leaving Iceland bound for Helluland (Baffin Island)

One ship has already been on the island for at least a week when the second ship arrives. A third viking long boat is at least a week behind the second. Each boat has at least 20 vikings on it.

There are several Inuit tribes on Baffin island. Total population unkown, but there are many. I have't figured out where yet, but the vikings won't know where to look when they first arrive. They will have to trust their wiccan advisors and viking trackers to lead them to the villages. Each viking boat will have one witch.

I'm so watching at lest one of those Eskimo flicks this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

After the weekend I'll be assigning homework. haha! Inuit stories for the Eskimos and Viking mythology for the Vikings. It won't be too harsh. 1 page at a time. If your really into the back ground of your chosen people I will be providing links as well.

How do you post the big pictures Welsh. I hav esome great scenery pics I'll be posting later that would look awesome like that.

kinda the inspiration for the game but when I saw that they landed on Baffin first and there were giant Eskimos there, I just couldn't resist.

Hey Henrik... glad you could join us. I was going to drop that bomb in the equipment thread when I gave a choice of four or five helmets the vikings could choose from and none of them had horns. Vikings also didn't use hammers like Thor.

Some may have but most didn't. Same with the horns. There were probably a couple that like to fix human skulls or antlers on their helmets, but the Vikings certainly never manufactured them.

So you thinking about playing?

It won't be as bad as it is for a newbie spell caster. The Shaman's been playing with magic since she was a teen but sanity loss will be a factor. More saving throws is all.

I'm thinking of playing an older viking (about 40-50 years old perhaps) serving more in an advisor's role than as a primary fighter/sailor (although he would probably know a bit about that as well). He would be knowledgeable about the law and generally be known for his wisdom and good advise. Perhaps he is an older brother or other relative to whoever is leading the viking expedition? I need to check up on the Dark Ages skills since I do not own the book (but I have seriously thought of buying it since it seems to be a very interesting setting). I looked through my library yesterday and discovered that I have no good sourcebook on Norse customs. (When we studied the Viking age in history class it was generally more about their exploits a bit about the gods, sagas and mythology) (Nyarlathotep=Loke? Or Loki as you English speakers usually spell it)

OK sweet. Henrik you're in. I got all my Vikings now. I'm still waiting on Flintlock and Carcossanoble to give their final OK.

We also just picked up Andrew from Imp in Training's site. Thanks for the free advertising there Imp. He'll be joining the Eskimos. So now we got 4 or 5 Vikings and 3 confirmed Eskimos plus Laraqua. Almost full people. If everything goes as planned, we'll be starting soon after the weekend.

In the case of the Marvel Super Heroes, you wouldn't be alone. We're all learning the game system, including yours truly. In fact, I think I'm pretty much the only one mucking through all the rulebooks to keep things upright, explaining the game mechanics as we go. The good news is the only dice you have to roll are a d10 for initiative, and a d100 for everything else.

It looks like a great game. I love Marvel Super Heroes so that's why I'm so tempted....but I'm sort of unfamiliar with anyone not in Xmen....and of course that's the baddies that I think are awesome. Need any villains??

I don't know who any of the characters are in the game either. Before the game started I never heard of any of them besides Nick Fury. I play Wonderman aka Simon, I know nothing about him except what Tom posted for me on the site but it's fun as hell. Don't worry to much about not knowing the characters, it'll come with time.

If it were just like 50 years later you could have an Eskimo Rocket Launcher. They were way ahead of their time. Don't let the primitive weapons scare you into thinking you are going to get your asses handed to you by the Vikings. Well..... actually.... you might.

In fact, I think I'm pretty much the only one mucking through all the rulebooks to keep things upright, explaining the game mechanics as we go. If No then what game system are you playing. I'd play speedball if I was playing a Marvel hero. Speedball or Beta Ray Bill.

Yep, old school. I found just about all the books for that game system online for download. You can't beat free.

I have to agree with you. I loved the Tick. Our characters would have fit right in. Dsigfus's guy had a giant light bulb for a head, and my guy had Magic butter knives. He was Lightbulb and I was Butterman. We had evil clones halogen and my guy was I can't believe it's not Butterman. Like I said prime Tick material.

Thank you and yes it is from a movie called, "Photographing Fairies" The picture is of the main character Charles Castle. Ironically it's my character portrait for a character I play on Dark and Moody in a horror game called From the Trenches, it's a WWI time era game and the movie "Photographing Fairies" takes place in the same era.

I loved that movie, it cracked me up. You would have been welcome. There were three of us who played this game together, it was the old Heros Unlimited game. We did it when ever we need a break from D&D. We were always looking for people who could laugh at their characters, and I guess themselves. He had to tell me that it wasn't Ash from the Evil Dead movies though because a few years back on Dark and Moody, Imp ran a CoC game and my character I played was Ash. It was a D20 Cthulhu game running the campaign "Nocturnum". The problen with running campaigns of that length is that none of the characters remember the important details from earlier chapters, especially as you lose players and have to replace them. It becomes quite a choir to try to find replacement players to take over already established characters, because who wants to have to filter through a few thousand posts to catch themselves up with all the details? Really, with Ash though, you could run any modern day game and he'd fit right in. A lot of the other characters didn't much appreciate his gung-ho attitude.

As it stands, if I ever run another Cthulhu game, it will be something considerably shorter than Nocturnum or Masks of Nyarlathotep (another PBP flop I tried). However, Andrew's right. My dance card is full at the moment.

If I do run one, it'll probably be here where replacement players are easy to find.

Besides Lands of Mystery, Tegal Manor and the Marvel Superheros Game the other games you've either ran or tried to run were awesome. I liked playing Brody in Satan's Relics (I only killed him because of Ari) John/Ash were fun in the CoC games, Then you tried the fighter pit game but it seemed that only Randal and I were interested so that never took off. Amber... even though I didn't play I read through it and thought it was really cool.

I believe long ago I ran the Call of Cthulhu adventure that came in the player's handbook, an adventure within a theater called "The End of Paradise"... but I don't remember if that was on Dark and Moody or something else. It actually ran all the way to the conclusion. I was pretty happy about that.

There was the The Spawn, my D20 conversion equivalent of one chapter out of the Great Old Ones campaign book. That one didn't run long because all the players were pretty much lost at what they needed to do. It was a hopeless game. Shame, all that work I put into it too.

I attempted to start a free-form science-fiction game which was more of an on-going story with no GM ... but there was only one interested player, so it didn't last longer than a few weeks.

It's funny, when you've run enough of these games, you can get a sense of whether or not the game will work or not based on player interest and participation. You also get to notice strange little facts like 25% of all of the players in any game will bail. Never seems to matter how good the GM is... it always seems to be 1 out of 4 players that have to give up the game for some reason or another.

This is the week boys and Girls or its supposed to be. I have to get some rules sorted out and Welsh is a being an awesome sport helping me out. Thanks again Welsh. Once they have been figured out, we're good to go. I'm very happy with the way things are going so far and with the interest generated in a dark ages Viking vs. Eskimos game. Please pay attention to the Helluland site and look for Eskimo Homework and Viking Homework cuz they are coming real soon. This will give you insight into Eskimo and Viking culture as well as explain a bit about their respective mythology.

My knowledge of Eskimo culture is about nil. Norse mythology, well we studied it during grade 4-6 and we discussed various Icelandic Viking Sagas during high school. (Viking Sagas are so fun to read. A lot of graphic violence and characters that are thinking nothing about it).

I remember when we got to see an Icelandic movie called Hrafninn flugur ("The Raven flies" that's the Icelandic original's title. In Swedish it's different although the name is literally the same) (which basically was a remake of Yojimbo and of a Fistful of Dollars (which is a remake of Yojimbo). Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis is also a remake of Yojimbo). A really entertaining movie where a young man without a real name comes to Iceland to avenge the murder of his parents and the abduction of his sister.

The way I've seen TV Links work is that if a show you want was on there and it becomes unavailable just basically wait and soon they'll have it up again. I'm guessing that the original site they link you to has dropped it or the link went bad. The crew of tv links is really good about getting that stuff fixed.

You know it's guys like us that kick ass on games shows. I can never understand why people on these shows are so stupid. I know like 90% of the answers on a regular basis, and here I am like a sucker working for a living.

Ah Crap! I added so much history to the Viking's and Eskimo's Homework thread yesterday while the site was shut down. I figured that only keeper's were allowed to post to catch up or something. Now its gone. hahaha! So much time wasted I think I'll have a drink this morning. Anybody else do anything stupid while the site was down.

I also responded to like half a dozen pms. Man! Well I'll redo all the homework so I got something to keep everyone interested. I'm thinking we should just start soon eh and get interacting? So everyone can have pracvtice playing in character. I think it will probably be hardest for the Eskimos to stay in character. Remember. Think giant gentle children who respect nature. Once you've read some inuit stories, you'll probably get more into the culture. And if you can't play a Viking.....Sheesh!! Get an axe and think violent thoughts or something...

Well, perhaps I expected something else when I saw it. I really don't remember much of it (since it was so long ago I saw it), but as I remember it, it used all stereotypes of Vikings that existed. I love Monty Python, but I can not say that I cared for Erik the Viking. If I see it again I might reform my opinion. Wasn't it a children's book from the beginning by the way?

No children's book (are you thinking of The Princess Bride?) at least on the children's book part. Erik the Viking did sort of do the stereotypical viking thing for a few of the characters, other than that most of the so called vikings weren't very viking like at all. It was a comedy and made fun of the vikings in a way. I honestly thought it was a great movie and one of my all time favorites. John Cleese as Hafdan the Black did an awesome job playing the villain, if you could even call him that. Honestly I'd watch it again, even if you go, "Ha ha! This movie did suck!" At least you refreshed your memory of the movie and who knows, maybe this time you'll find something about the film you do like.

Took me like 6 times before I ended up liking Rocky Horror, then again I have a wife that's a huge fan of the movie.

You are totally right Henrik. I have encountered alot of contradictory information when I was assembling the various mythology info for the Vikings. The inuit too. I'm going to take that for what it is. Contradictory. Vikings, even amongst themselves, will have differing views on various religious issues and interrpretate the Edda's in different ways as many Vikings have probably not even read them. Feel free to express anything you have read online or in my Homework thread as gospel to your character. It will make for interesting Viking philosophical debates, if you can imagine such a thing.

That was the one piece of advice my grandfather gave to me when I got married, just say yes dear to everything. My grandparents have been married for about 60 years and I had asked him how he did it. That was his answer and his advice to me. So thank you for the advice and I hope your stay on the couch won't be for too long!

Checked it up. One theory is that eskimo would mean "he who eats raw meat" in some Indian language, but that claim is debated. About the use of the word eskimo, according to Wikipedia the word Inuit is used to denote eskimos in Greenland and in Canada (which is prefered there), but in Alaska the word is still prefered, since the word Inuit does not exist in the language spoken by eskimos from this region.

So the term Inuit is regional and the word eskimo is used as a term denoting a wider group of people (compare Scandinavians to Norwegians, Swedes and Danes) according to this source.

Yeah for sure. The only real choices characters need to make are for personal items and weapons.

An Eskimo might want to have something cool like a Narwhale walking staff or a special ivory carving from a loved one. Or a large piece of ivory they wish to carve as they go along. I'm gving

Other than that, The Eskimos will have to get creative, But I will give the Shamans and the hunters standard Eskimo equipment befitting their professions

The Vikings have alot more to choose from as they come from a more industrial civilization. I'll give all the Vikings a starting kit too. Many of the Vikings could have been on other Raiding campaigns through England, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany and Turkey. The PC's could have picked up various treasures and keepsakes as they pillaged most of Europe. Anything is OK with me as long as it fits in with the 1000 AD timeline.

Yeah I'm on it. The two Shaman's will be getting different spells as they both perform different functions now for the spirit world. Trixie your Shaman will be getting lots of protection spells to help your people. laraqua your SHaman will be getting more selfish spells and abilities as you'vel eft your people.

The Viking bard polayed by Carcassonoble will be getting a shorter spell list involving Rune magic but similarly relarted to Cthulhu magic. Nobosy will know what the witches can do until somebody decides to play one.

I would also recommend you discuss issues like armor, weapons- how much armor protects and what are the costs. Likewise how much damage weapons do and what is the difference between weapons of stone and bone vs weapons of steel.

You might want to ask Carnage if you can put up the spot rules for combat so everyone knows what's going on. Weapons tables too. You can put those up as pdf. Ask Carnage and he'll help out.
