Character Creation

by Mephistophilis
So there are some pre-gen characters from The Dare available if anyone wants one. The archetypes that weren't already taken are listed below.

When you've chosen an archetype I'll post their stats for you to copy and post in another thread for finished characters that I'm going to make later. This is so you can do your own bookkeeping (mark off sanity etc). Feel free to amend/embellish any backstory, change the name etc. Characters should have a portrait, you can find one yourself of the scenario comes with a set of pictures you can pick. They include their own equipment but if there's anything else you're burning to have in your possession we can discuss it.

The archetypes are:
- The Bookworm
- The Athlete
- The Tough
- The Side Kick
- The Prankster
- The Snob
- The Poor Kid
- The Boy/Girl Scout
- The Weirdo
- The Know It All

If all the original cast don't join us then we'll also have the following archetypes available:
- The Poor Kid
- The Boy/Girl Scout

Rolling Characters

Posted: Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:13 pm
by Mephistophilis
If you want to roll your own characters then the following are the rules (there may be some gaps so just ask if it isn't clear). For stuff like damage bonus just calculate like in CoC 7th edition. We won't add the damage bonus to any attacks other than hand-to-hand brawling:

Statistics: Roll the following dice to determine your stats:

■ (1D4-2)+6 x 5 for EDU
■ 1D6+6 x 5 for STR and SIZ
■ 2D6+3 x 6 for APP and CON
■ 3D6 x 5 for INT, DEX, POW, and LUCK
■ Magic Points are equal to your POW divided by 5.
■ Hit points are equal to your SIZ+CON divided by 10.
■ Sanity is equal to your POW.

Skills: Kid investigators’ skills are assigned as follows: select 1 skill at 80, 2 skills at 60, 3 skills at 40, and 4 at 20 points.
Add these points onto the base skill level; the maximum for any skill, however, is 99% regardless of base.

Carryover Characters

Posted: Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:23 pm
by Mephistophilis
So Darren and Harry were in The Dare so they're carried over from the Finished Character thread there. They can heal all damage since it has been a whole year. Let's do an Investigator Development Phase and you can roll against any skills you passed in The Dare and gain 1d10 skills points if you fail the skill test. Everyone gain 10% in Spooky Stuff (since we don't have Cthulhu Mythos) and take another 1d10 on top of that (if you also passed a Spooky Stuff test during The Dare you get another chance to advance it).

Check against Luck and if you fail gain 1d10 additional Luck points. If you pass gain 1d5 Luck (1d10 / 2 rounded up). Gain 1d10 Sanity for defeating the Witch Evelyn Barnaker and 1d6 Sanity for proving Roger wrong by surviving the Barnaker House. Harry gain an additional 1d10+10 Sanity from a year of intensive psychotherapy but also develop a mania or phobia or so on as a long lasting mental scar from the experience.

You are Charles/Charlotte Bruckner. You are relatively new to town, your dad works as a shrink for the VA and they keep moving him around. Most kids, if they know anything about you, is that your mom is dead. She died five years ago, along with your younger brother, in a car accident. You were in the car too, but you lived. You don't like to talk about it.

You think a lot but don't feel like talking much. Many other kids avoid you because you like to wear black and you don't like to look people in the eye when you talk. You do like to listen to music, Dad got you a Walkman for your birthday. Your older sister at college left behind most of her records when she went to college so you've got a lot of mix tapes. You like those. You also like reading books about dead people, and ghosts, and murders, and vampires, and accidents, and lots of other stuff most people find creepy. You don't find it creepy at all. Charles/Charlotte is new to school and nobody knows them well. They spend most days, when not it class, sitting in the corner listening to the Walkman and writing in a notebook. Some kids think they're spooky - always reading something weird about ghosts or werewolves. Kinda creepy if you ask me.

Your older sister at college left behind most of her records when she went to college so you've got a lot of mix tapes, some bands like Van Halen, Montrose and Blue Oyster Cult. Who are you?
You are Max Franklin, a studious and avid reader often labelled a 'nerd' or 'bookworm' by your peers. To you, reading isn't just a pastime; it's a passion that fuels your imagination. The local public library is your sanctuary, granting you access to a vast array of knowledge. You've delved into genres spanning from science fiction to Sherlock Holmes mysteries, but your true fascination lies in the realms of monsters, ghosts, and horror stories. Secretly you've been attempting to craft your own spine-chilling tales.

Academically gifted, schoolwork poses little challenge for you. However, the intricate social dynamics of your classmates often confound you. While not inclined towards athletics or romantic interests, your amicable nature has earned you respect among your peers. You are known for your willingness to assist others, especially in subjects where they struggle.

What do others know about you?
Max is a quiet and unassuming presence in school, hidden behind his glasses that hint at his intellectual prowess. He's known as a 'bookworm' and wears that label with pride. His world seems to revolve around the pages of books, particularly those filled with tales of dinosaurs, monsters, and ghosts. Despite being one of the smartest kids in school he isn't stuck up about it and is always willing to lend a hand to someone struggling with homework or studying for a test.

Once we've got our characters let's have a think about how they know each other and what their relationship is. Obviously Harry and Darren go way back - how have things been since the Barnaker House? Since Harry came out of the hospital? Are Harry and Darren still friends? How about the other two?

And what brings everyone to visiting the old Funland amusement park on Halloween? Would you be in fancy dress? Who challenged you to come? Why did you?

Who are you?
Your are Darren Pickett and you are a jock. You're the best player on your Little League team and are already plotting out which team sports to pick in Middle and High School. Mom and dad have drilled into you the value of teamwork and leadership; however good you are you are better as part of a team. You're often picked to be captain or the like when you play games at school. Most of the time it is fine, but lately you've noticed people just assume you want the job, even when they don't ask you first. Nevertheless, if you are picked to be the leader, you do your darnedest to lead the team to victory.

What do others know about you?
Darren is probably the best athlete in your grade and well liked by everyone in the neighbourhood, kids and adults alike. They are a natural leader and good motivator, always pushing their friends to do their best, be it in a ball game, gym class or wherever. Darren is a loyal friend, if a little pushy sometimes, but people tend to assume he is in charge of a group, even without asking or telling him.

I think Charlie’s just gone for a look around (or perhaps he saw the others going and decided to follow after them, to see what they get up to)? Hanging around a deserted amusement park seems like the sort of thing a weirdo metalhead ought to be doing at Halloween.

The 15 points of Spooky Stuff is an increase from the base of 5%, so Darren should have 20% in it.

I think Harry and Darren would still be friends. Harry might know Charlie through his dad. Since he's a psychiatrist, maybe he offered his services to help Harry when he was in the hospital. Harry would be in his Lt. Commander Data costume from Star Trek: The Next Generation. I think Harry would have gone to the amusement park to prove he's cured, and also because he wouldn't want Darren to go without him. I'm not sure who would have challenged him.

Definitely happy to take the bookworm if that suits the party.

He could be putting up a poster on the pin-board in the school library advertising a new "Mad Scientists Club" inspired by the books written by Bertrand Brinley (which are probably in the school library).

Charlie had met Harry before, on one of those ‘play dates’ that well-meaning parents seemed to set up in order to make friends for their children. At some point, he planned to make friends, but they’d be in a band, wearing black and bringing Metal to the masses! It wouldn’t be some bow-tie wearing, know-it-all, dork!

He rolled his eyes, put on his headphones and pressed ‘play’ to drown out the obsessive chatter… 😉

Darren and Harry hangout at school but Harry's parents weren't too kean on it as they think it could cause another episode. Darren keeps to himself mostly, still playing sports but is a lot more reserved, not as take charge as he was, after what happened to his brother he doesn't want any kind responsibility, especially if it means letting anyone down. His home life has changed, his parents have lost a bit of trust in him and even though they won't say it, they partly blame him for Ian.
Harry is his connection to that night, so there is a strong bond there.
Why are there at Unland? Could be a message from Louis (best friend)who may have not been seen at school for a few days or Shirley whose parents took her out of school to keep her way from 'bad' influences and the 'wrong' people.....or evena message from Kyle.....

Who are you?
You are Paul/Pauline Laughlin and you love a joke. Everybody takes everything sooooo seriously, they need to lighten up. You're always out for a laugh and love punching holes in stuff, uptight sorts. Mom and dad have laid down the law recently saying that if you got caught pranking a teacher at school you'd be grounded for the rest of the year, so you've decided to hold off. Halloween night, however, is a oerfect time for pranks. Hopefully you can get to Funland before the others and get to some real pranking.

What do others know about you?
Paul is the class clown, a practical joker and all-around smartass. They are always getting in trouble at school for goofing off or for playing practical jokes, on students and teachers alike. They always have got some kind of trick up their sleeve (often literally), a hand buzzer, joke gum, a squirting flower, and so forth. Their tricks often get them in trouble with kids and teachers at school, but he keeps right on with them anyway.

Who are you?
You are Dirk Blokowski, derisively called 'Dirt' by those that don't like you on account of being a messy poor kid. That doesn't stop you from trying to make a joke out of everything. You love to pull pranks, scare people, and generally cause mischief whenever you can outside of the house. When mom left dad due to his drinking and abuse, and your brother Richie left to attend West Point and get away from him, you became the target of your father's drunken rage. As a result of this, you spend most of your time outside of the house exploring and causing trouble.
This Halloween you overheard some of the other kids were going to check out Funland at night. You decided that this is the perfect opportunity to prank them, have a good time, and maybe - just maybe - finally make some real friends.

What do others know about you?
Dirk is a joker, a class clown, and all-around trouble maker. He is always getting into trouble at school by either ignoring his lessons or putting salt in the teacher's coffee. He can often be seen getting yelled at and chased off in town by some irritated shopkeeper or a group of older boys that don't take kindly to his jokes. He's always got a trick or a joke up his sleeve and seems to love to be the center of attention with a smile on his face and a laugh in the air, but you may have noticed that he never seems to hang out with the same people for long and always leaves school alone on his beat up hand-me-down bike.

Looking good. I've sent you a PM about how to introduce Dirt. Do you want to add him to the finished characters thread.
