Harry examines the rat too, trying to see if there's anything that can be done.

"I don't know if it can be saved but I hate to see any animal trapped and suffering."

Darren looks down at the rat, the colour draining from his face as he places one hand in his pocket."He shouldn't suffer like that." He whispers.

Charlie looked around for a rock…

Max looked away, unable to help the animal but unwilling to see its suffering violently ended either. "Sorry guys, I don't know how to help it."

"Well, if it's alive and just pinned, it can get itself out. And if not well... here help me lift this." Dirk hated to see something weak suffer and felt oddly sympathetic to the trapped rat.
Dirk positions himself to try to lift the corner of the strut, "We only need to get it up an inch or two."

[Philulhu]

Charlie wasn’t convinced that the rat would be going anywhere, but moved to help Dirk. ”Watch out it doesn’t bite you when it gets free,” he said, shuffling his feet out of range.

[Snapper]

Max didn't know how to help first aid a rat but he could help lift. He quickly turned around to help move the awning.

[Mephistophilis]

Between them, Charlie, Dirk, and Max are able to lift the wooden pole. It's heavy but the three of them raise it a few inches and shift it away from the struggling creature. With the strut removed you can see that the poor animal really took a lot of damage from being crushed. It's face is caved in and there's a jagged hole where one of its eyes should be, and is that brain poking out?

But the rat shakes its head, little spatters of blood flying in all directions. It rolls over and lifts itself up painfully onto front legs which are twisted and look frankly broken. It takes a few tentative steps, seeming to wince in pain in so far as you are able to read the expressions of such a battered animal. But then it straightens up and bounds off into the undergrowth and is gone.

That creature should be dead. There's no way it could survive those injuries. And now it's running off into the wild like nothing happened...

"That's impossible!" says Harry. "That thing should have been dead already!"

Charlie eyed the undergrowth where the rat had disappeared warily. It certainly hadn’t looked in any kind of state to be running around again. ”Perhaps it was running off to die?” he suggested. ”Cats have been known to do that if they get hit by a car, you know. Could be that rats are the sane?”

" But still, it shouldn't have ran pff like that! Soo quick, it was practically flat!" Darren said to Charlie.

[Mr. Handy]

"It was crushed to death," says Harry. "It shouldn't have been able to run at all. It violates the laws of physics!" He sounds personally offended by the anomaly, as if the universe is conspiring to drive him crazy.

[Philulhu]

Charlie looked at Harry with a frown. He was no scholar but that didn’t sound right to him. ”Don’t you mean the laws of biology?” he asked.

[Mr. Handy]

"Those too," says Harry.

[Snapper]

"Rats are meant to be tough, aren't they? P'haps we have just seen proof?"

"I had a goldfish that lasted about three hours, in perfect conditions I might add, when I was eight. A bit of rat toughness wouldn't have been a bad thing then." Max appeared to be rambling. Blathering even.

Trying to push the thought of the rat out of his head Darren moves to look inside the stall, eager to change the topic of conversation. Shining his torch inside.

There's not so much an inside to the stall as simply a pile of collapsed poles and shelves. There's the remains of what might once have been candy bars, the wrappers mixed in with leaves and dirt. There's also several cans of soda; Coke, Tab, 'New Taste' Mr PiBB, and Sprite, all scattered on the ground. Some of them are oddly shaped, like maybe they got dented when the concession stand collapsed.

Charlie nudged the oddly-shaped looked cans with his foot. Was there any indication as to what had caused them to deform? Did it just look like impact damage from where they had fallen?
