Ch.2 Exxon Pumping Station #31

Benjamin found that he was having to raise his voice to be heard over the sound of the machines.

Due to the background noise, any listen tests in here will require a hard success.

Randy nodded back to Ben. Giving up on yelling for now, by simple sign language Randy indicated that he would clear the open corridor and gestured for Ben to cover him.

...And Randy stepped into the open passageway to the west, rifle at the ready.

The corridor actually goes south first, my bad I’ll update the map once I get time to get on my computer. In the meantime…

Looking around the corner, Randy could see a corridor stretching off to the west, with pale panelled walls and a rubberised brown mesh on the floor. It had the same sterile emergency lighting as the rest of the complex they had seen so far.

After about 25 feet, there was a flight of stairs leading upwards. Additional corridors branched off this one to the left and right.

"That probably goes up into one of the other buldings," says Benjamin. "That's convenient. We won't have to go outside. But we should check what's behind that door and check in with the others before we start poking around in other buildings."

[Snapper]

"Sounds good to me. I don't want to get too split up from the rest, guaranteed they'll get themselves into more trouble without us."

Randy doubled back and speedily opened the door on the east side.

The sign on the door read ‘Cellar Store’ and the door ‘sssshhhhed’ as Randy pushed it open. There was a notable change in temperature as the door opened, it being several degrees cooler on the other side.

The room beyond was around half the size of the previous room, with a handful of cardboard boxes along one wall and eight food-grade barrels opposite the entrance. Adjacent to the barrels, a series of concrete steps lead upwards, and there was another opening in the wall on the right.

"At least we won't starve," says Benjamin. "Let's check the opening."

[Philulhu]

The short passage lead to a steel ladder, similar to the one that they had climbed down, except this was wall-mounted and not freestanding in the middle of the room. A sign next to the ladder had an upwards-pointing arrow and the word ‘Office’.

Boyd informs the others that are with him what he found.

"Amanda and Harold, look what I found a couple of handheld CB radios that seem to be working!"

“Awesome, good work!”

Harold leaves the main radio to inspect the handhelds. Satisfied that they are in working order, he looks around the room for the parts he needs, since the others couldn’t find them.

There are no computers in the room.

Circa 1986 - I'm picturing a collection of Commodore 64 stand alones. At least one of which would be running Pong!

Perhaps in one of the recreation rooms?

"Okay, we've explored this level," says Benjamin. "Let's rejoin the others and fill them in before we range any further."

[Snapper]

"Yeah, I'm happy with that. Before they do something stupid. Or we get killed."

In passing, Randy had a glancing look at one of the cardboard boxes as they headed back.

If the box looks like it contains readily edible food, and isn't too heavy, Randy will carry it back upstairs for the half-starved team.

Gavin is just hobbling around the ground floor. Are there any signs for a canteen?

[Philulhu]

The two men returned up the ladder to the Tool Room, where the others were waiting. The box that Randy grabbed on the way up contained packets of dried fruits and grain, which were particularly welcome as Gavin was yet to find a canteen.

The clock was ticking around to 4.30pm and, outside, the light was starting to fade. In under an hour, it would be dark.
