Just to clarify:

The scenario is set in October 1986 I think. The emails are dated September 1985. Is that correct or a typo? If it's correct, they're talking about events from slightly over a year earlier.

That’s a typo. The emails should be dated the same year, so around a month before you arrived on the scene.
