Ch.1 Rescue Plan

October 1986. Contact with Exxon Pumping Station #31 in British Columbia has been lost and a rescue team has been assembled.

The environmental activist group, North Wind, had threatened to bring operations to a halt. Could they be behind this sudden communication failure, or is something else going on?

Benjamin feels the chill, but he's made of very tough stuff.

  Fail.

Randy coughed and sputtered. "This is really not good for my asthma," he wheezed.

Con (45)

  Success
Harold slowly trudges through the thick snow. If he’s cold, it’s not possible to tell from his relaxed expression and methodical movements.

Why is there a d6 roll here?? I rolled that two weeks ago to test the feature and never attached the roll to any of my posts.

I had one too, although mine just sat in my dice roller for a couple of weeks. Not sure why, tbh, but it seems to have gone eventually.

I had to roll a spurious roll to see if it was still there so you can ignore this roll… 1d100

The team leader was surprisingly resistant to the cold, strangely being apparently the one that resisted the cold the worst.

For someone without much experience with the outdoors, Boyd is doing fine.
"So, the company had a missing base and now a missing plane. I bet my supervisor will be nervous. And it is not because he misses me" - he says as a joke.

Amanda grumbled at the joke of Boyd, she really wasnt for that kind of interaction.

"A man is probably dead, his insurance is more expensive than the plane, and they will pay it with our salaries."

The lack of cover on the exposed ledge was telling and the cold wind whipped up ice particles that stung as they encountered any exposed flesh, just adding to the discomfort as they trudged through the snow. Even wearing mountain boots, each step chilled the feet, causing discomfort and the occasional stumble.

After two hours, the estimate was that they had barely covered two miles and some of the party were really starting to feel the effects of the cold. Frost gathered in fringes, eyebrows and facial hair. It was clear that getting off the ledge and to somewhere more sheltered was an imperative.

If you failed your CON roll (Gavin, Randy), you’re really feeling the cold, your teeth are chattering and you’re shivering. Your next roll is subject to a Penalty Dice.

OOC:   Is there any way the party can see to get below the tree line that didn't involve climbing equipment and probable spinal injuries? Or is the party struggling towards the tree line but just taking a long time to get there?

It will be a long and arduous journey, but try another Navigate roll to see if there’s another way down.

  Definite Fail.

Randy is really too busy coughing up a lung to be much guidance right now.

Exploring the edge again, Benjamin could see that there was another ice wall below, though not as high as the last one, being closer to 30 feet instead.

It was clear to anyone with any knowledge of the conditions that they faced, that Gavin and Randy’s situation was going to deteriorate unless they found shelter or dropped down to a lower level.

"So, how do we do this? We use a rope or what?"- asks Boy without much enthusiasm.

Harold analyzes the situation for a moment, then speaks up.

“I bet we could drive a piton into this ice and tie the rope to it. It would be slow going, but if we attach the equipment to the end of the rope, we can pull it back up after each person gets down. Not entirely sure how we’d get the rope down though, so I’ll go last. I’ve got an idea, but I can’t guarantee the safety of the person who does it.”
