Ch.1 Rescue Plan

October 1986. Contact with Exxon Pumping Station #31 in British Columbia has been lost and a rescue team has been assembled.

The environmental activist group, North Wind, had threatened to bring operations to a halt. Could they be behind this sudden communication failure, or is something else going on?

As they entered the forest, the evergreens reached far above, muffling the sound of the near-constant wind that had accompanied them since the plane crash. The tops of the trees still exposed to the winds swayed, creaking and groaning, periodically causing clouds of snow to sift down around them.

The snow wasn’t as deep there, but other obstacles slowed their progress, leaving them to deal with fallen logs and undergrowth that hid undulations in the landscape that could trip the tired or unwary. As they progressed, it became more gloomy, the overcast sky and the density of the trees making it difficult to see the way ahead.

Benjamin takes point. Even with his injuries, he's the best suited to deal with any dangers.

OOC:   How's Gavin doing? Sill sled bound? Or is it possible to us the trees to make a sturdy splint or crutches?

Every few metres, Randy quickly used his pocket knife to carve an arrow into a tree trunk, pointing the way they were walking.

There’s no shortage of timber so finding a branch for a crutch is relatively straightforward. It’s easier doing that than trying to negotiate the forest with the sledge.

"When we get there it would be better to do a little reccy of the place, be good to get the lay of the land before we barge in. Right all this timber, i need to get off my arse and get a crutch. Still be slow but better hobbling through these trees than you poor bastards dragging me." Gavin says, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

  Success!
“I am fully in support of doing a little bit of scouting prior to entering a random building. We have no idea what’s in there.”

Despite the cold and windy trek, Harold seems to be doing well; at least as well as a person can be in these unusual circumstances.

Pausing a moment for Gavin to find a sturdy branch to use as a crutch, the group prepared to push deeper into the forest.

Benjamin took the lead, with the others following close behind, weaving in between the trees, with only the crunch of compressed snow and occasional ‘snap’ of a broken twig hidden under the snow to break the unnatural and unnerving silence.

Spot hidden, please.

Benjamin has a feeling that there's a presence out there, but he can't see it.

The group pushed their way through trees, making steady progress, although the quiet was unnerving, with a distinct lack of birdsong or other animal noise. The undulation of the forest floor and the uneven spread of the trees meant it was difficult to maintain sight lines, although Randy was able to keep track of their progress by notching trees as he went.

After about a mile, Benjamin noticed a flash of blue through the trees ahead. Stepping out into a small clearing, the group saw the ruins of a campsite consisting of several tents and a debris shelter, all of which had been ripped and smashed to pieces. Fragments of tents and sleeping bags were strung from tree branches, and clothes and other belongings were scattered over the snow. A shredded Earth First banner hung from a makeshift flagpole.

Suddenly, there was a realisation that the splashes of red around the site weren’t fragments of tent material or clothes. It was everywhere - the clearing was painted with blood... a lot of it! A grotesque tableau of broken limbs, piles of flesh, and shredded, unidentifiable viscera, topped off with a a head leering down upon them from above where it had been impaled on a broken branch, a look of absolute horror frozen into his features!

SAN checks, everyone.

SAN loss is 1/1d4+2.

Thankfully, Randy failed his Idea so isn't Temporarily Insane!

Randy had never seen anything so appalling in all his young life. Suddenly, the fact he was barely out of his teens was very obvious. "Oh my god!!" He lurched behind a tree and was violently relieved of the little left in his stomach. Then he staggered a few feet before collapsing and burying his face in his hands, bursting into tears.

"Adonai!" cries Benjamin. While he's seen horrors in the Yom Kippur War, this is worse than anything he had seen before. "Whatever is out there slaughtered the North Wind activists! I have a bad feeling that the same thing may have happened to the crew of the pumping station. That may be why we lost contact."

Gavin is too shocked to make even a rational guess at what could've possibly done this.

"I think it's the same thing that wounded that bear I finished off," says Benjamin, "and that strung up our pilot. Maybe it's the same thing that got us with the giant snowball last night, but it fled rather than face us. We're heavily armed. I don't think these hippies were, but if they were, it didn't do them any good. We may want to search the camp for anything useful or any clues or tracks."
