Ch.1 Rescue Plan

October 1986. Contact with Exxon Pumping Station #31 in British Columbia has been lost and a rescue team has been assembled.

The environmental activist group, North Wind, had threatened to bring operations to a halt. Could they be behind this sudden communication failure, or is something else going on?

With the help of the others, Benjamin managed to wriggle out from under the dead bear, bruised and battered but thankfully alive!

"Thank you," says Benjamin. "Let me borrow that first aid kit." He tries to treat his own injury, but he's still too shaken up by the encounter to be effective. He takes two bullets out of the box of ammo and tops up his magazine. "Do we have time to skin and butcher the bear? The fur could keep us warm, and the meat could keep us fed for a long time. It would be only fair. The bear was going to eat us."

Penalty die:

  Success.
Benjamin gets a HP back.

"We need to get moving and get to shelter before dark or we could die tonight. We are down a tent and things are throwing monster snowballs at nighttime. Bear will wait."

Randy shakily bandaged up the scratches, his fingers cold as ice.

Gavin notices another wound in the bear’s flank. The blood was dried and fur matted, so it was more than a few hours old. It looked like it was attacked by another bear.

Randy is convinced staying put will lead to deaths for the reasons he has said, and will urge the party on.

" Bear meat is one of my favourites , but without a proper way of cooking it I wouldn't advise it and we dont have time to skin it, think you've been watching too many movies. Looks like something took a wee chunk out of Gentle Ben before it got to us. Either another grizzly.....or our furry friend." Gavin says looking up from the carcass.

"Yeah, you're right," says Benjamin. "We absolutely have to get to the pumping station before nightfall. It just seems like a waste, but maybe our snowball-throwing Yeti friend will appreciate the meal and leave us alone. Thank you, Randy."

Eschewing the bear meat, the group pushed on, though the cold and lack of food meant that energy levels were starting to drop. The sky was overcast and the wind continued to blow steadily, adding to their discomfort and bringing the risk of frostbite to any exposed flesh.

They trudged on, making slow if steady progress. The frozen landscape was unchanging, snowdrifts and ice-covered rocks all there was to see, with just the pipeline to guide them. As midday passed and the light started to wain, they finally caught sight of their destination.

A forest of evergreen swept into the valley from the right, and the pipeline followed the river as it curved off to the left, around the edge. Up ahead, in the distance, the pumping station - comprising half a dozen low buildings - sat atop a low hill that had been cleared of trees.

Can I have CON rolls from everyone? Your next roll will be subject to a penalty die if you fail.

CON (70) 1d100

As the crow flies - by taking a shortcut through the forest - it’s around two miles. Following the pipeline as it snakes around the edge of the forest will double the distance.

  Uncharacteristic Success!
Putting his first aid skills to good use then later finally seeing their destination had reinvigorated Randy. At least temporarily, he was coping with the insidious cold.

Benjamin has no problem continuing to endure the cold, knowing it won't be much longer. "Well, we don't have to worry about getting lost if we make a beeline for the pumping station," he says. "We'd just lose the shelter of the pipeline if we take the direct route."

"Forests are treasonous, be extra careful, if we get lost... I dont think we make this one."

The woman was very much exhausted and mistreated by the cold, that had hitted here severely in the last time, but hope was at her sight.

"Remember, we lost contact with the pumping station, and after that plane crash, presume shit. If anything but a disarmed human is there, you shoot first, then ask for confirmation. Single alarm shots if unclear."

" Either way has problems, follow the pipeline we have shelter, takes a little longer bu oit in the open if ol' Grizzly Adams fancues anymore potshots. The forest is quicker but provides cover for......everything..." Gavin nods.

Randy considered how this would be approached as a Scouting excursion.

"Well, on the downside, I don't think we have a compass between us, so let's not get lost in there. On the upside, if we do get lost, there's hopefully more firewood, until the next predator arrives."

"We should definitely mark trees as we pass them, so at least we can tell where we have come from. We can use that as a sort of pointer to keep our bearings."
He held up his pocket knife and waggled it by way of demonstration.

Randy tried to think of some simple, better way to maintain a fixed heading in the forest.
