Ch.1 Rescue Plan

October 1986. Contact with Exxon Pumping Station #31 in British Columbia has been lost and a rescue team has been assembled.

The environmental activist group, North Wind, had threatened to bring operations to a halt. Could they be behind this sudden communication failure, or is something else going on?

Ok. Can whoever is hammering the pitons into the ice give me a Climbing roll?

Lost_King: Any comments about the suitably of this approach from your real-life climbing experience?

OOC:   I believe the odds are still marginally in Randy's favour...

Coughing terribly and shivering uncontrollably, Randy nonetheless steps in with the piton. "I did quite a lot of climbing in the Scouts. [COUGH!!]"

1d%L60%

1d10pLd

Actual result is I think a 100.

Believe that's a fumble as a result of the penalty die. Can Randy spend 5 Luck to make it not a fumble, just a solid fail?

As group leader she should probably have been the one to go first, but she wasnt confident in her climbing so she didnt. Considering the state of Randy, Amanda was really prepared to start really hating this decision.

So far, no one had managed to hammer pitons into the ice to sufficiently inspire confidence…

Testing the rope, it was alarming to see the pitons spring out of the ice with barely an ounce of pressure applied. It seemed that this wasn’t going to be their way down.

Can I have another Navigate and CON roll from everyone, please?

"There has to be a better way," says Benjamin.

Not everyone has tried yet.

Navigate roll (35% skill) to find a better way down:

Spending 2 Luck to make that Navigate roll a success.

“I guess I’ll give it a go.”

Climb 20%

1d100

  Fail
I’m not as familiar with mountain climbing as climbing wall climbing, so everything I say should be taken with a grain of salt. I know that it’s way more dangerous than climbing on a dedicated climbing wall. However, I’m sure a solidly lodged piton would hold a person’s weight. Given the circumstances, this is the safest strategy I can think of for getting inexperienced climbers down the wall of ice, which has very few holds. The only concern I can think of is how well we can put the piton in the ice.

Boyd wasn't very sure, but he saw once in a tv show, how to do safe climbing. Carefuly, he tried to repeat what he remembered, and amazingly, it worked!

"Guys, I think I did it".

Harold has never done a bit of climbing in his life, but he looks over and smiles, happy to see that his plan might work out after all.

“Great! Now all we need to do is set up the rope, and we can start down. Who is going first?”

Amazingly, given that Boyd had learned the how to place the pitons and tie the ropes by watching a TV show, it held fast when pressure was applied to it. Even two people pulling at once didn’t move it, so the rope was pronounced safe to use.

There was a moment’s (self) congratulation before discussion turned to who was to go down first. But before they could decide, an eerie scream could be heard in the distance…

Assuming that you’re climbing down, can I have a climb roll from everyone?

There’s no need to spend the luck for your navigate roll just yet. Originally, the plan was to continue along the ledge but with the successful climb roll, I’m going to retcon that bit, and you can now get down to the level of the river.
