Inverness Burgh Police Station, Castle Wynd, Inverness
Thursday 19 March 1931. 9.45am

The rain from the night before had barely abated so the streets were slick with rain and anyone already out and about was wrestling with their umbrellas in the gusting wind.

The Burgh Police Station was off a courtyard near the castle and having explained there presence to the Desk Serjeant, they were shown in to see Inspector Sinclair, who studied them with a keen eye.

“Whit can I do for ye? My serjeant said ye wanted to talk about matters up at Strathmorn,” he said.

“Hmmph,” Inspector Sinclair grumbled. “I don’t recall asking for assistance.” He looked quite put out.

He looked at Bonnie. “The McLeod boy has been charged with the murder of Donald McColl. He’s in the cells now. I’m not sure what else ye think ye can help with.”

Inspector Sinclair stared at Dr Douglas for a long moment, then looked at Bonnie. “On the night in question, there was a birthday party. Everyone in the village was there, except for McLeod. He was out tending the sheep. He was the only person who didnae have an alibi.”

”We asked around and neither the local priest nor the doctor had a good word to say about him. If ye want to talk to him about how a haunted house did it, then be my guest.” Sinclair isn’t openly mocking the suggestion but it’s clear he has little faith in the idea.

The old priest was quite a weird sight in the police station considering it all, as even the rest of their group was european un nature. With friendliness of a charming man he spoke to the Inspector.

"Forrgivenness, good man. I am ze Father Ó Shaban. My curriosity is somewhat baralel to ze rest of ze fellows bresent. I have quite heard of ze... Violence of zis case. And, while not zat many westerrners seem to zink so nowadays, demons can be so cause of terrible violence. For ze brotection of Christ, I would ask for a meeting wiz ze man, if ze abbroved."

“Demons, Father?” Inspector Sinclair looked at Father Ó Shaban for a long moment. He shook his head resignedly.

”You can talk to the boy if you wish,” he said and he stood and called one of the Serjeants to the office to escort them to the cells.
_ _ _

“Now don’t get too close!” warned Serjeant Lorimer, the barrel-chested policeman who had accompanied them down to the cells, and unlocked the cell door so they could see the accused. The air was cool and Jamie McLeod sat with his blanket around his shoulders. He was a slightly build lad in his late teen, pale-faced with a sweep of dark hair across his forehead. He looked from his visitors to Serjeant Lorimer, who said, “No funny business, Jamie. These folks just want to ask ye a few questions.”

Serjeant Lorimer looked dubious but took down a heavy truncheon from a hook on the wall and stepped into McLeod’s cell. “Jamie - the Doc wants to take a look at ye. That’ll be ok, won’t it? Nae funny business, right?” McLeod nodded weakly and the Serjeant stepped back to admit Dr Douglas.

“Over to ye, Doc. I dinnae reckon he’ll give ye any bother.”

I'm so sorry everyone!!! Can we pretend Cait was here and introduced herself too because that was my intention 😅

Cait stood near the cell's entrance with Miss MacKenzie and the Father, watching Dr. Douglas inspect the man. She still felt a little silly since mentioning the haunted house situation, especially since the inspector did not seem to be too keen on their intentions—at least not their apparent belief in ghosts. "Anything of note?" she asked, forgetting for a moment that the man they were inspecting was alive. She was so used to inspecting dead bodies.

McLeod sat still as Dr Douglas gave him a quick once-over. As far as the doctor could tell, other than being a bit under-nourished, he was in good physical condition.

“All good, Doc?” said Serjeant Lorimer. “Right, Jamie. These people have got a few questions for ye. Ye’re happy to answer them?”

McLeod looked up and nodded, waiting for the first question.

Father Ó Shaban while having one of his hands within his dignified beard, looked arround the cell, in the look for strange things. And, or maybe, signs of demons. Strange marks, and or smells.

Cait was pleased by Miss MacKenzie's first question. No accusations or conspiracies, just a simple question. "And," she added, "what do you remember from that night?" She expected that he had no answer, as suspects often did not, but she was willing to hear him out just the same.

Serjeant Lorimer went and fetched the police report for Doctor Douglas and passed it over for him to read.

Police Report

Incident No. INV-31/203 Date: Sunday, 15 March 1931
Time: 8.30pm

Crime: Murder
Victim: Donald McColl Age: 37
Place of Residence: Strathmorn

Suspect: Jamie McLeod Age:18
Place of Residence: Strathmorn

Summary of Evidence

The deceased was last seen alive on the evening of Saturday 15 March 1931. He had been attending a party at the Strathmorn Hotel, Strathmorn. He left early, but was killled before he reached home.

Enquiries with the villagers established that all residents had been at the party and could provide alibis for each other, with the exception of the suspect, who was looking after Farmer McIntyre’s sheep that everting. The suspect claimed that he had been exploring McMorn Manor, which was reputed by locals to be a haunted house.

When asked for an explanation, McLeod said, “The ghosts must have done it.”

As Father Ó Shaban took a look around the cell, Jamie McLeod sat and considered Bonnie’s question before answering. “I know most people in the village. I’d see Donald around and he was always in the pub when I went in. We weren’t pals but we got on all right.”

“That night, everyone got to go to the hotel, except me. Father Mcinyre had me watching his sheep so I had to work. I was up near McMorn Manor and thought I’d have a look around. Some reckon it’s haunted but others say there’s treasure buried away in there.”

“Anyway, I sat down to rest my legs and I must’ve fallen asleep. All I remember after that is waking up suddenly to hear the howling wind. I reckon it was the ghosts making the noise and they did for Donald. I had nowt to do with it, honest!”

There’s nothing apparently out of the ordinary in the cell. The cell walls are whitewashed and someone has carved some five bar gates in the wall as a means of keeping track of the days. The only other thing of note was an enamelled bucket with a wooden lid in the corner of the room. It didn’t smell too fresh.

“I ken I didnae kill Donald McColl so it must have been ghosts,” replied McLeod vehemently. “Everyone kens the place is haunted - I should have listened to Reverend McCallan and stayed away! It’s the Divil’s work!” He crossed himself, looking thoroughly miserable.

”Ma shoes?” said McLeod, looking puzzled. “I don’t understand, Father. Why would ma shoes be any different?”

He looked down at his feet. He wore a battered pair of working men’s boots which showed signs of considerable wear and tear. ”These are them. The only ones I’ve got.”

Father Ó Shaban seemed to think for a moment and then asked towards McLeod.

"How much forr ze shoes? I can pay forr Mister Hamish to get you new ones. And I keeb yourrs."

Wathever was the conclusion of that he asked the Sargent Lorimer something.

McLeod looked at the others. Was this some kind of joke? Why was this weird old priest trying to buy his shoes?

Before he could answer, Serjeant Lorimer interrupted and said, ”Sorry, Father, but ye cannae take his shoes away. They might be needed as evidence.”

“Speaking of which,” he continued, turning to Dr Douglas, “Strathmorn is an isolated place, miles from anywhere. If any strangers had been in the village they’d have been seen. When Donald McColl was murdered there was only one person who couldnae vouch for his whereabouts, and that was young Jamie here.”

“As for where the body was found, all I know was that it was found in the village. I didnae attend the scene of the crime as I’d been working nights that week.”

Serjeant Lorimer thought for a moment. “He was well-liked, I reckon. Bit of a local celebrity - he could toss a caber like nae one else for miles around. Mind ye, me and ma lads had tae have words with him from time tae time. The Earl disnae take kindly to locals poaching his birds. Nivver actually caught him in the act, but when ye find a man ‘oot fae a walk’ in the early hours, ye ken what he’s been up tae.”

He shook his head. “Once the coroner was done with him, he was buried at the local kirk. Closed coffin - he wasnae a pretty sight.”

“Now, has anyone got any more questions for young Jamie here? Otherwise, I’ll need tae be getting on.”

Inspector Sinclair looks less than pleased when Dr Douglas enters his room and asks for a copy of the coroner’s report. He bellows down the corridor, Serjeant Lorimer! What are these civilians still doing in my police station?!”

Hearing his boss yell, Lorimer says, “He’s nae happy!Ye’d better go!” and he showed the party to the front desk. As he hold the door open for them to leave, he says quietly, “I’ll tell ye one thing. McColl was torn to shreds. I’m nae sure that McLeod could have done that!” He nodded and let the door close, leaving them out on the street.
