Back to the Village (everyone)

A brutal murder has taken place in the small Highland village of Strathmorn. The accused claims that the ghosts from a local haunted manor are to blame!

Piqued by the alleged supernatural angle to the case, renowned Psychical Researcher, Harry Price, is seeking a team of responsible persons ‘of leisure and intelligence, intrepid, critical and unbiased’ to investigate the haunting.

Doesn’t that just sound like the sort of thing you’ve been looking for?

So has Bonnie, presuming she still loses one here even with a 1 on the Sanity roll.

Well, it was a critical roll, so I’ll let Bonnie keep that one!

They didn’t need to be able to see the events on the other side of the door, because the sound of crunching bones left nothing to the imagination. It lasted for around ten minutes before it went quiet again, disturbed only by a hollow-sounding ‘tonking’ noise on the door itself. It took a moment or two to understand what was happening… … it seemed that the creature had heard Father Ó Shaban’s low prayers and was now investigating the door!

Bonnie holds a finger to her lips again, making absolutely no noise.

Ascot holds absolutely still, hardly daring even to breathe, but ready to hurl himself at the door if it starts being pushed open.

Eyes wide in horror, sweat beginning to appear on his brow, feeling his heart pounding Dr Douglas stands transfixed, eyes locked on the door.

The Father hearing the creature seemingly listening to the door, stopped his low prayer. It was clear that the Lord desired quiet meditation, if he didnt, then the beast would have already left, so he continued in his praying position without speaking.

Oh dear…

The noise came to a halt then there was a roar that sounded uncannily like wind howling through the trees on the stormiest of nights and an almighty crash that split the door in two, sending splinters of wood flying into the room!

Two claws like the questing roots of a tree slipped through the gap and heaved, causing a plank to break in two and the angular face of creature could be seen beyond, like carved wood in the shape of the statue, except this had a maw that dripped with bloody teeth!

SAN checks, please!

Generally not, no. I’ll confirm SAN loss once everyone has rolled, speaking of which…

Father Ó Shaban (SAN 56) - 1d100

  Success.

Ascot yells over his shoulder, "Doctor! Try your spell!" Then he turns to face the creature, feet firmly planted, cutlass up, and yells at it, hoping to scare it off. "Yarr! Yarr! Go home! Bad dog!"

The Father was not calm, it seemed that a tiger-leopard-monstruosity was entering the room, and he was an elderly man with artritis. And so, he rushedly manner moved himself to the fartest distance away from the beast.

Dr Douglas backs from the door, eyes wide..."Yes!,Yes!, the words.. " His mind reeling as he sees the monstrosity breaking through, the words fumbling in his mind, hands shaking, attempting to open the journal.

Ascot made his roll so just loses 1 point of SAN. For everyone else who failed:

Bonnie 1d6
Dr Douglas 1d6
Father Ó Shaban 1d6

I’d imagine that Bonnie can absorb that loss and can act freely but I’ll need INT rolls from Dr Douglas and Father Ó Shaban, which you really want to fail…

Dr D can do his own but FÓS has issues with the dice roller so I’ll need to do his. Here goes (INT - 64)… 1d100

Fortunately for the good Father, his mind suppresses the horror of what he is witnessing although the experience has affected him in some way. In moving to “the fartest part of the room” it appears that his bowels may have deserted him… 😉

Once Dr D has made his roll, I’ll update again.

Ooh! Just sneaked in there! 😬🤣

Look at those teeth! Those sharp, pointy, bloody teeth! Dr D has developed a bout of Phagophobia, the fear of swallowing, eating or being eaten. The effects will last for some rounds (I’ll let you know when it wears off).

Actions will be in DEX order:

Creature (?), Father Ó Shaban (60), Ascot (50), Bonnie (45), Dr Douglas (30).

Feel free to post in any order, though.

1d100

The door timbers creaked alarmingly as the tendrils tightened but for now, they held! The creature’s head stretched through the gap, trying to snap at anyone within range!
