Back to the Village (everyone)

A brutal murder has taken place in the small Highland village of Strathmorn. The accused claims that the ghosts from a local haunted manor are to blame!

Piqued by the alleged supernatural angle to the case, renowned Psychical Researcher, Harry Price, is seeking a team of responsible persons ‘of leisure and intelligence, intrepid, critical and unbiased’ to investigate the haunting.

Doesn’t that just sound like the sort of thing you’ve been looking for?

As Dr Douglas leafed through the journal, the scrap of paper that had been tucked inside fell out and fluttered to the floor. The paper with the strange words that he had read before, “NIHAR CTHOR HAG NAATHI IST’HE GHLAN GHEIHNT’HOR.”

Looking to his companions, holding the scrap of paper in his hands. "McMorns journal describes this creature and how its summoned. This scrap paper has a starnge phrase, possibly an incantation. Now this may banish the abomination or make our predictament even graver. I soke this phrase once before when we checking the trees and nothing happened, hopefully a sign that it isnt a summoning phrase. Dare I read it now?"

"I dinna ken if it will work without the beastie here," whispers Bonnie, "or at all, but it's our best chance. Let's keep quiet for now, but if it finds us and tries to break in the door, then try the chant. If that doesna work, try it backwards. We willna have anything to lose at that point."

Ascot looks at Dr Douglas with a raised eyebrow and speaks quietly. "Doctor, I admit that the witch doctors back home give me the willies. But I don't believe in incantations and spells."

"This creature is some monster out of the dark recesses of Africa, of which there are many. But I don't think it's a devil anymore than I think a lion is a devil."

"If I had my rifle, I could prove the point, eh?"

"Being a medical man and a man of science, i too am sceptical of these other worldly theories. However there is something unnatural about these current events, and this creature. It maybe a hitherto unknown predator from deepest darkest Africa, but seeing the detritus it has left behind over many years and that there was no trace of thus creature that even an experienced hunter like yourself could find and the carnage we have just witnessed, there is something.....wrong about this whole predicament. " replied Dr Douglas.

Ascot shrugs amicably, having no wish to fall out shortly before he and his colleagues were probably about to die horribly.

Half an hour passed, then an hour. The darkness was near total, except for what moonlight seeped in through the windows and the occasional flash of luminescence from the hands of a pocket watch as the time was checked once again.

From the rest of the house, there was near silence except for the occasional creak or groan of a floorboard. For the four barricaded in the bedroom, they could only wonder what had happened to Dr McBride. Had he escaped? But if he had, surely he would have summoned help? Or was he still here, he and the creature creeping around in the darkness, hunter and pray locked in a silent battle to outwit the other?

Suddenly, the silence was broken as a gunshot rang out, quickly followed by a high-pitched whine as it ricocheted off into the depths of the castle - McBride must have taken a shot and missed! There was the sound of pounding footsteps, racing over the floor towards them, followed by a strange ‘chonk-chonk’ like wooden poles being banged on a wooden floor!

Then McBride was at the door, hammering madly! “Let me in!” he screamed. “Let me in! The beast is upon me and I will surely die if you do not let me in!”

The darkened figure of Ascot shakes his head vehemently and whispers hoarsely. "No, he has made his bed. He forced us here at gunpoint, putting us in grave danger, and showed every sign of being willing to shoot us. Then he abandoned us. He's on his own now and good riddance."

" I'm afraid i must concur woth Ascot he's the reason we are here so woefully under prepared and he left us in this room to die when he barged out at gun point. This whole time he thought of botuing but himself and his greed. If the tables were turned he gladly put a bullet in our heads than open this door to any of us." Dr Douglas nods gravely.

Bonnie nods, sadly. If it were only her own life at risk, she might have taken a chance, but she has no right to risk the lives of the others in this room.

“Argh! Arrgh! Aiiiieeeeee!!!” came McBride’s screams from the other side of the door, which shook alarmingly as the creature slammed into the door, extinguishing the life of their erstwhile protagonist.

In the moonlight, a dark stain started to spread under the door from the other side…

SAN checks, please.

Bonnie maintains her stiff upper lip, and the rest of her remains just as motionless and silent.

The Father Ó Shaban that had stated in his praying position during this entire thing, still kept it, staying silently. As the blood of MacBride passed under the door, the old man started praying in arabic in a low voice. There were two dead men, and he wasnt completely sure there wouldnt be a third of fourth before the end of the night.
