"I'm afraid I don't know who it represents," said Henri. "I'm not sure anybody does. It was built in the early days of the chateau. The maze came later and was placed around it."

Jacques:

Own Kingdom: France 50%

OOC:   Crit Success.

Jacques looks thoughtfully at the grounds of the chateaux. "Hmmm..."

Jacques had heard many things about Auvergne, or Averoigne as it was also known. There were numerous stories about odd happenings in this region. Disappearances, sightings of many different kinds of bizarre creatures, witches and magic, people traveling to other worlds or even times, you name it. This area was like a lodestone that drew the abnormal. There were also said to be dark forces at work that sought to exploit the region's odd nature to enhance their already considerable powers.
Spoiler:
You know all the details described here, as well as anything in Clark Ashton Smith's stories about Averoigne, provided those things were known no later than 1517 (though I haven't actually read those stories myself).

Jacques:

Jacques thoughtfully strokes his short beard. "This seems most at odds with the work of Master Da Vinci and his understanding of nature and devices, and his amazing inventions. But you may be interested to know this." He looks earnestly at Elizabeth and the others.

"I have heard many things about this province, Auvergne, or Averoigne as it was also known. Numerous stories about odd happenings in this region." He gestures indicating the whole province in which the party currently finds itself.

"Disappearances, sightings of many different kinds of bizarre creatures, witches and magic, people traveling to other worlds or even times, you name it. This area was like a lodestone that drew the abnormal."

"There were also said to be dark forces at work that sought to exploit the region's odd nature to enhance their already considerable powers."

Reflexively, Jacques makes the Sign of the Cross and kisses his St John's Cross ring. "I cannot speak to the truth of any of this, and it may well all be peasant superstitions. But I have seen strange things in my time."

Elizabeth looks meaningfully at Story and Brook. She says to everyone,
“I must confess that Le Duc is living up to the local legends by staging this play tomorrow.
The King in Yellow has an evil history and terrible calamity has befallen the audience on more than one occasion.”

Jacques:

"I have never before heard of an evil play. Bad, frequently, but not evil."

"The troupe of players has arrived while you were in the maze," says Henri. "I can take you to meet them if you like."

“Oh yes please, Henri. If everyone else is happy to meet them. There must be something strange about these actors if the play is as deadly as previous.”
Elizabeth looks around for the way out.
“Is it this way?”

Jacques:

Jacques will tag along to meet the troupe, although he remains highly unconvinced of this fatal play theory.

Henri led Story, Elizabeth, Brook, Jacques, and Diego back to the chateau and into the entry hall. Leonardo da Vinci came in from the opposite side, as fast as he could move at his age. "I'm glad I found you," he said, out of breath. "My automaton - it's gone!"
